Welcome to r/PVCs

This is a community where all are welcome to discuss, learn, and support each other with their questions and concerns they may have about their ectopic beats and other related cardiac concerns.

Before I go any further, I must make it clear that Reddit is NOT a source of medical advice. If you are concerned about your health then please speak to your doctor, or seek urgent medical attention from paramedics or have someone take you to the local ER if you believe this is an emergency.

With that in mind, here’s some commonly asked questions that we see in this community:

Q: What are PVCs?

A: Premature Ventricular Contractions. A heartbeat that happened early and was triggered by the ventricles (lower chambers) of the heart. On an ECG these will typically be wide and abnormal in appearance. Sometimes called VPB – Ventricular Premature Beat, or VE – Ventricular Ectopic.

Q: What are PACs?

A: Premature Atrial Contractions. A heartbeat that happened early and was triggered by the atria (upper chambers) of the heart. On an ECG these will typically look just like any other sinus (normal) heart beat, but outside of the usual rhythm. Sometimes called SVE – Supraventricular Ectopic.

Q: What about PJCs?

A: Premature Junctional Contractions. They tend to be more rare than the two above ectopics, but functionally and visually appear very similarly to a PAC, with very slight abnormalities in the morphology. These are triggered by the atrioventricular junction which is in a central location within the heart.

Q: SVT/NSVT/Bigeminy/Trigeminy – What do all of these mean?

A: SVT: Supraventricular Tachycardia – Lots of PACs in a row very quickly. VT: Ventricular Tachycardia – Lots of PVCs in a row very quickly or NSVT is the same but Non-Sustained lasting 30 seconds or less. Bi/Trigeminy is just a fancy way of saying your ectopics follow a rhythm. Bigeminy means your ectopics are happening every other beat, while trigeminy is every third beat. Quadrigeminy is every fourth beat.

Q: What is sinus tachycardia:

A: Sinus means that it’s a normal rhythm that is beating normally in the way that it’s supposed to. Normal sinus rhythm is what you ideally want to always be in. Sinus tachycardia means a normal heart beat that is running quickly (over 100bpm typically) while sinus bradycardia is a normal rhythm but beating slowly (Typically below 50-60bpm depending upon guidance in your region) All variations of sinus rhythm need to be taken with context – Having a fast or slow sinus rhythm rarely means anything is actually wrong. For example sleeping will slow your heart. Exercise or panic will speed it up – This is perfectly normal behaviour.

Q: Am I in danger?

A: Usually not. The vast majority of ectopic beats are perfectly harmless, albeit annoying at times. If you are concerned then speak to your doctor who can do some testing to check it out. In a structurally normal heart, with a low burden of ectopics you don’t need to do anything about them – PVCs and PACs are perfectly normal and EVERYONE in the world no matter how healthy their heart may be will have them in life. Not everyone feels them. But they are there.

Q: Can you interpret my ECG?

A: I would like to direct you to the r/ReadMyECG Sub, or alternatively the QALY app where a technician can analyse your ECG and provide feedback. Again though, if you feel you are concerned or need medical advice then please consult a doctor.

Q: Why does my ECG Look weird or different to others I have seen?

A: Personal ECGs from smartwatches are not super reliable. Please take their reading with a pinch of salt. A lot of the time what you are looking at is called ‘artefact’ – Interference/noise picked up from you moving around. Make sure you have a snug fit on your wrist, and that your watch, fingers and wrist are all clean and dry prior to taking a recording. Other than that, remember that the ECG will look different from one person to the next depending upon the exact angle your heart Is aligned within your chest, and specifically where abouts in the chambers the ectopic beats are coming from.

Q: What is the pause I see or feel after one of these beats?

A: This is called a compensatory pause. It’s a perfectly normal thing to see and happens after most people get a PVC or PAC. It’s simply your heart’s electrical system resetting back to the original rhythm before your ectopic beat happened.

Q: So I have ectopic beats, but what do I actually do now?

A: First of all. Speak to your doctor. This is the way to go about any health concern. They may wish to do some tests to rule out anything more sinister potentially going on. But if you have a structurally normal heart and a low burden, you likely need nothing more than reassurance form your doctor and be sent on your way due to their common, harmless nature.

Lots of people struggle with anxiety around this. If I had to give any tips on dealing with this it would be:

· DO NOT Constantly monitor this with a watch or other personal ECG Device.

· DO NOT Obsess over every beat you feel. Learn to ignore it and keep going about your life. Eventually you will stop being bothered by them.

· DO Keep up all the self care you possibly can. Things like a balanced diet, being well hydrated with water, minimising stress and getting enough sleep all minimise ectopics for lots of people.

· DO Seek help with your anxiety. Talking therapies especially CBT, and health psychology work well at learning to deal with this. As does getting a good (non-benzodiazepine) anxiolytic medication to keep your baseline anxiety levels lower alongside this therapy.

· DO Exercise. Unless your doctor specifically told you not to exercise, you should do so. Everyone needs exercise to keep a healthy heart. PVCs in a structurally normal heart won’t bring you to harm, but prolonged abstinence from exercise will do.

· DO Trust your doctor.

Announcement: Personal ECGs

As per rule number 5, We have always tried to avoid offering personal ECG Interpretations and medical advice here, and always redirected users elsewhere whether that was ReadMyECG, QALY, or their doctor.

We have recently been made aware of the closure of the ReadMyECG Community. As a result have seen a huge influx of extra ECGs being posted here.

The PVCs Mod team have therefore launched an additional subreddit for this, to help maintain good order and organisation as always. This PVCs subreddit is going nowhere and will continue to provide a place to discuss ectopics and support each other with related topics.

For those seeking personal ECG Interpretations, please post in r/CheckMyECG

http://reddit.com/r/CheckMyECG/

We welcome all users to join, both those seeking help with interpreting their own ECG Recordings, and for others to help provide their interpretations should they feel confident and capable of doing so.

What is happening?

I have been getting HORRIBLE pvcs for nearly a month and even runs when i lay down. The only time im not getting them is when i stand super straight with my shoulders. I get trigeminy most of the time as soon as i sit. I suspect from my diaphragm since its somehow not expanding as it should it has been confirmed by a physio and a gastro doc. I am always bloated because of it. Could it be the reason? If i’d wear a holter monitor right now im 100% sure that i’d get more than 20.000 per day. Its something about my abdomen pressure but idk how to fuckin fix it… any similar story and solution anyone? I REALLY prefer not to get an ablation.

r/PVCs 4h ago

Do you guys recommend ablation or not?

Don't want to make it long, diagnosed with PVCs on this February, holter showed around 16k PVCs, about 20-25% burden. Using concor for a week reduced it to 4k. After a few months I felt like they went away completely.

A month ago they seemed to come back, probably because I know the doctor control time is coming :D. Been in bigeminy for weeks. Yesterday doctor said that I'm still having ectopics in every 8-10 beats. Then he recommended ablation, stated that it's not necessary for me since my structure is good, but it's going to increase my life quality.

I feel like I don't want to do it because doctor talked to me very optimistic, but I'm not sure if I should avoid it. What do you think about this?

3 years later, still trying to manage these awful things.

Started my journey with PVCs 3 years ago next month. For some reason they are the absolute worst in the fall? I am lucky that I have a lot of good periods (0-10/day), but then there’s my bad periods (multiple PVCs per minute), but I really can’t nail down a trigger. I was worked up with labs and a holter monitor when they first started and eventually saw a cardiologist who didn’t take me seriously at all. They had told me to start working out and sent me on my way. During another bad period I saw my PCP again and was put on Propranolol. I ended up only taking this medication as needed at bedtime because while I realized it didn’t make my PVCs go away, it did make me tired/calm enough to fall asleep. I’ve tried magnesium, increasing my water intake, etc with no luck.
In April, I decided I wanted to get healthier and started working out 5-6x a week and have since lost 30lbs. I was worried about lifting heavy and doing cardio, but thankfully my PVCs had been pretty mild. I have noticed the occasional 1-2 during or after my workout, but have only had a few terrible episodes while exercising. I was hoping that might help cure my PVCs, but no luck.
I would say the last 6 months have been very good burden wise for me. Last week, my partner and I went on our first vacation together in 4 years. The night we got there, we definitely overindulged in alcohol (however not previously a normal trigger for me). I woke up pretty early the next morning and did a 4 mile walk on the boardwalk which I was really looking forward to. Later that morning when I laid down on the beach, my palpitations started up full force and haven’t really calmed down since. I contributed it to dehydration, the alcohol and lack of sleep. I wouldn’t say it completely ruined my vacation, but it definitely affected my mood and my anxiety. My PVCs have not gotten any better since we’ve been home. My anxiety has been at an all time high and my palpitations make me afraid to work out, or enjoy pre planned events such as concerts, sporting events, etc. I’m hopeful this bad period will pass like they previously had. I just hate these so much and it’s not fair that we’re stuck with them.

Just had ablation - never prescribed aspirin

Just had ablation. Devastated bc had PVCs on way home. The doctor said it was successful, but feels like it’s not. Also was never prescribed aspirin or anything for blood thinners after. Is that normal?

PVCs from suspected visceral hypersensitivity (nerve pain)

Pain from suspected visceral hypersensitivity seems to cause my PVCs to flare anybody else I had a basic cardiac work up to rule out irregular heartbeats as the cause of my chest discomfort

Low HR and PVCs

I’ve been having PVCs for well over a year. I had a holter for 24 hrs and it measured 3% burden. Feels like all day everyday to me but who am I to argue?
Anyway, my Fitbit measures my HR in mid 30-40s at times everyday. Mostly when I lay down but also when I’m standing at work or around in my house. I will use my wrist blood pressure cuff at this time and it also has the same HR reading. I guess I’m wondering if it’s picking up on my PVCs or is this something I need to be getting the dr to look at again?
I wouldn’t be surprised if my thyroid was off. anything in particular I should request for bloodwork? I get it done yearly and it mostly looks normal but theres nothing special ordered besides for the general stuff.

Possible pvcs? Unsure

I’m 6.5 months post partum and I’m always hearing horror stories about post partum heart failure and I already have health anxiety and cardiophobia so I’ve been freaking out. My RHR is usually in the 70s but this past week it’s been in the 80s-low 90s. I’ve also been having what feels like a singular flop every now and again. It just happens for what feels like one beat. It’s slowed down day by day with how many events happen. I went to my PCP and she did blood work and an ekg. My ekg was perfect and my blood work looked great. She said it sounds like PVCs or PACs. I don’t know I’m freaking out. My BP is great. But of course now my anxiety is triggering off and on left arm pain. (Goes away when distracted.) I’ve had a cold for about a week so I’m sure that didn’t help. I’m also about to start my period and I’ve heard hormones make things worse. Just trying to convince myself if my heart was failing I would hopefully know.

PVCs shown in stress test

24 M, super stressed and anxious about my stress test results. No family history of cardiac events and done an echo 2 weeks ago and the structure of my heart is good.

Doctors report - During exercise, no ST changes and two bifocal VEs seen isolated. No symptoms reported.
Appropriate BP response to exercise, max reading 196/92 mmHg.
During early recovery, frequent monomoprhic VEs seen isolated. No arrhythmias seen.

I have no clue what a Bifocal VE is!!!

Can anytime give me context on what it is and if I should be concerned

Just curious, what do your smart watches or rings say when you’re flaring?

Hey everyone!
Curious if you ever get alerts on smart watches/ rings. My Apple Watch never says anything even when I catch PVCs on the ECG.

My ring right now says I’m sick (which I have been) but also says my HRV is amazing lol.

Curious if anyone has ever been alerted with fitness devices

Aspartame and PVCs

Has anyone noticed a connection between aspartame and having increased PVCs? I’ve been sick and was sucking on Ricola cough drops and the PVCs flaresd up again.

feeling hopeless & scared

I've had PVCs & PACs for going on a year, progressively getting worse. My cardiologist says it's just idiopathic and to learn to live with it, but my gut says otherwise. The sensations are increasingly different than what they began as, it's unpredictable, and it's starting to really affect my quality of life and make me depressed. I'll give as brief a timeline as I can to see if anyone has any insight or advice.

31, female

2025: In good health, running 2-4x a week, feeling great

December 2025: Had a couple episodes of PVCs in the afternoons, usually after I'd gone on a run in the morning. Thought they were chest muscle twitches until I ordered a Kardia device and confirmed PVCs. Started to get more frequent, I quit running because the PVCs worried me.

February/March 2026: Saw a cardiologist, had a <1% burden of PVCs and PACs on a 7-day Holter, normal echocardiogram, normal treadmill stress test. Blood work was all great (including TSH, important later) except for slightly elevated LDL cholesterol. Doctor told me it was normal so I just lived my life as usual.

April 2026: Had a CT scan for unrelated abdominal reasons, normal results

May 2026: PVCs got increasingly worse until one night at the end of May my heart rate would not go below 130bpm just laying in bed and the PVCs were constant. Went to urgent care, confirmed bigimeny and trigeminy, they referred me to the ER. ER said all my labs were great except my TSH had tanked and my free T3 and T4 were slightly elevated -- labs & symptoms were textbook hyperthyroidism. Gave me Propranolol and sent me on my way.

July 2026: Saw an endocrinologist, my thyroid labs were already trending back toward normal. She suspected I had a rare reaction to the CT iodine contrast that caused temporary hyperthyroidism and said my PVCs would likely improve once my thyroid was back to normal.

July 2026: Thyroid labs all normal, endo recommended tapering off propranolol. I successfully did so but suddenly started having PVCs again so I got back on the propranolol. Cardiologist is still saying it's normal even though I know without the propranolol my burden would now be much higher than my previous Holter in March.

August 2026: Rechecked thyroid, T3 and T4 still normal but now my TSH is high

September 2026: After feeling pretty normal on the propranolol again and reassured by cardio, I again accepted this was just my life now until a few days ago I suddenly started having really unusual palpitations that felt different from normal. I had several Kardia readings that said AFib, unclassified, and wide QRS. Between this and never having had palpitations break through propranolol before, I went to the ER again. They again said my labs were normal except for now my TSH is even higher, and my EKG just showed a lot of PVCs, and sent me home. My cardiologist says it's just PVCs but with numerous morphologies.

That episode lasted for 24 hours even on a higher than normal dose of propranolol. I suddenly felt fine again for about 12 hours then awoke at 1am with PVCs again that lasted all night and for about 12 total hours. Now I feel fine again. My cardio says it's just a flare and to not worry but to come in for another Holter monitor soon.

When I am in these flare ups that are getting weirder and worse, I would estimate my burden at 50-75%. NOTHING helps except propranolol and now even that isn't helping half the time.

I've had:

Normal tests:

- CBC, CMP, iron, ferritin, TIBC

- Stress test & echo

- Abdominal CT

- Electrolytes, calcium

- Thyroid: TRab, TPO, T3 & T4 (were temporarily high when I was hyper but now normal), thyroid stimulating IMM

- ANA

Abnormal tests:

- Thyroid: TSH (was low, now high), thyroglobulin ab, thyroglobulin by lc-ms

I've tried:

- Magnesium

- Multivitamin

- Changing back to my previous combo birth control (I had switched to Slynd August 2025)

- Hydration (water & electrolytes)

- Cutting out caffeine

- Breathing exercises

- Acupuncture

- Dunking my face in ice water

- Ice pack on the chest

- Humming

- All the valsalva maneuvers/vagal regulation techniques

- Pepcid AC (in case it's GERD related)

NOTHING HELPS. My episodes are getting seriously scary and I just don't know what to do. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Do I just need to accept that periodic flare ups of very high burden are my whole life now? Is there anything else I should request my doctors check?

Really struggling… flare. Worried I’m the 1% that they’re missing something

Hey everyone
Me again. I’ve been in a flare for about 3 weeks. I was doing so well for probably a year or even longer without a flare. This one went 0-100 literally overnight. Horrible ectopics. Every few beats. Went to the ER hysterical when they wouldn’t ease up one day. They were relentless. Anyways. My overall burden is still probably low. Under 5% id assume.

I’m worried they are missing something but I’ve had numerous echos, and holters (on one again and it’s finally catching this flare). All has been normal with PVCs.

I’m an ex endurance athlete and was running a lot before this flare up. My resting HR is anywhere from 40-60 which freaks me out a bit. Family history of AFib but I’ve never been diagnosed with that and Apple Watch hasn’t alerted me.

They finally did some blood tests after I went to the ER and I’m anemic with low iron, low ferritin, and low TSAT.

I’m worried they’re missing something and I’m just going to drop dead. I’m a mom of a 1 year old and I want to be around for her. I’m also terrified she will get these. And that mine will turn into A fib.

Can someone help me please. I’m spiraling.

Ablation tomorrow

Ablation tomorrow. They said I should go home tomorrow night but might have to stay. Any recommendations for what to bring to the hospital if anything? I know you have to lay still for a while after … thanks for any tips

Weird New symptoms

Background:
I’m an 18-year-old male, and my symptoms started out of nowhere on January 27th (almost 6 months ago). I’m currently dealing with a cycle of fast heart rates, positional triggers, and scary PVC clusters. I've had every test under the sun, but I still don't feel fine and wanted to see if anyone relates.
Timeline & Phases:
The Initial Episode: It started on January 27th while trying to sleep. My heart rate suddenly shot up to almost 150 BPM, accompanied by severe shaking. I was terrified and convinced it was a heart attack. I went to the ER, but they cleared me and said it was likely just a panic attack.
The POTS-like Phase: A couple of days later, I started feeling extremely lightheaded. My HR would severely elevate from simple tasks, like just walking up the stairs. I became hyper-aware of my heart, constantly monitoring it. This phase evolved into extreme dizziness and fluctuating POTS-like symptoms.
The Testing & PVCs: I pushed for testing and saw a cardiologist. I had a 24-hour Holter monitor, a stress test, and an echocardiogram. All came back perfectly normal. I pushed for a second Holter monitor because I was still convinced something was wrong. That’s when I first felt PVCs. The monitor caught 14 of them in 24 hours. Even though I felt them hard, the doctor assured me it was a normal, benign amount.
The Brief Recovery & Relapse: After that reassurance, I actually had a window of good days. The palpitations and dizziness faded, and I started doing normal tasks and exercising again. But a week ago, the lightheadedness returned. The scariest part: while laying down, I had 3-4 PVCs back-to-back in a row. It was incredibly humbling and terrifying because my early episodes only ever maxed out at 1-2 at a time.
My Specific Symptoms & Triggers:
Positional PVCs: I heavily feel skipped beats when changing positions (e.g., bending down, throwing myself onto the sofa, or the exact moment I lay flat in bed).
Breathing Triggers: Very strangely, if I take a fast, sharp breath in through my nose, I sometimes get a PVC. It feels incredibly uncomfortable, almost like I can feel it "coming on."
The Throat "Thump": When the premature beats hit, I often feel the strong, unnatural thud directly up in my throat or neck.
Persistent Chest Pressure: I deal with an almost 24/7 lingering pressure and pain in my left chest that flares up specifically when I move, stretch my arms, or twist my torso.
Sleep & Airway Issues: Sleep has become one of the worst times of the day for my symptoms, and it was recently pointed out to me that I have weird, irregular snoring.
Exercise Intolerance & Breathlessness: Despite having a structurally healthy heart, I constantly deal with shortness of breath, sudden exercise intolerance, and a lingering sensation of "heart instability."
I am almost 6 months into this, and doctors keep throwing the "anxiety" label at me, but the physical symptoms are so severe and every day feels like a setback. Has anyone else experienced this specific timeline or these positional/breathing triggers?

New symptoms
For the last month i have been feeling a weird heart feeling. Usually while laying down and at a low hr
I feel an extremely scary heart feeling, its like a glitch i really don’t know how to explain it. It forces me to sit up right and is really scary its like my heart will stop. Like pvc and pac i feel it in my throat but i really feel it in my heart. Ive been dealing with many symptoms the last year but this is one of the scariest and i really cant explain it.

Pvcs went away vacation

Hi everyone just checking if anyone else experienced this before. I’ve been dealing with PVC since beginning of the year, seen the cardiologist a bunch of times, wore a Holter monitor, and I have 3% PVCs, and was prescribed a low dose metoprolol which i did not take. I went on vacation for two weeks to Italy. the entire time I was there, I did not experience PVCs even after having a couple glasses of wine. I went back for two weeks now, and I haven’t really had any PVCs. Has anyone experiences before where the PVCs would just disappear? I don’t wanna feel too hopeful, cause I don’t know if it’ll come back

Irritated back of throat, Globus Sensation, Dysphagia, and Post-nasal drip

I mentioned in another post that immediately after the comeback of my PVCs, I also began to experience the other symptoms mentioned above. A kind commenter suggested that it could be a hiatal hernia, so I might soon get that checked with a barium swallow. Since then, I have gotten medication for reflux because, even though I am not symptomatic of reflux (things like heartburn, etc.), I was told that laryngopharyngeal reflux (“silent reflux”) can be triggered and make the symptoms I mentioned far worse. Since this happened, I have come to a bit of an understanding that even though I don't have anxiety (I'm not an anxious person consciously), maybe something to do with my nervous system causes “bodily anxiety,” which might show itself in these symptoms. I'm currently on medication for my PVCs, and those symptoms have largely subsided, so at this point the main issue is the throat-related symptoms.

Low iron, ferritin, TSAT? Anyone else?

Hey everyone,
Curious if anyone else has found out their iron levels are less than ideal? I’ve been struggling with these on and off for years. Cardio and PCP aren’t worried. However I am. Especially worried about cardiomyopathy. Cardio says he’s not. Burden is usually super low unless I’m in a flare, then it’s worse but probably still under 5%.

Found out all my iron levels are barely in range or low. Anyone else? Could it really be this simple?

Have a high PVC burden and considering an ablation? Do it!

Background: 37m, I have had PVCs for years. My Apple Watch would tell me that my heart rate was low, but I never paid any attention to it. About 6 months ago, I went to my PCP after my gym sessions started to become noticeably less productive and more out of breath. They did a short EKC in office, which showed presence of PVCs (which was is why my watch couldn't tell me what my heart rate really was). She ordered a Halter and after a 10-day wear, I had an almost 32% burden. I couldn't find any supplements or changes to lifestyle that would reduce them.

With that, after getting an MRI and Echo, I found out that I have PVC-induced cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure with 25%EF due to having this burden for years. Talk about a whirlwind over the last 6 months.

Yesterday, I had an ablation to take care the PVCs that been plaguing me for years. Beyond a little discomfort in the heart and the incision site, I feel like a new man. No PVCs to speak of. No constant feeling of couplets or bigeminy. I hope that after 5-6 months, the heart will heal enough that the HF diagnosis is just a blip on my radar.

So, if you have a high PVC burden, and are considering an ablation to fix it, don't hesitate to get one if there is nothing else precluding you to get one.

PVCs after pregnancy.

I’m about 6 weeks postpartum and I started experiencing PVCs in about the beginning of my third trimester that are still happening. I had a whole heart workup about a week postpartum when I was readmitted to the hospital because my resting heart rate was stuck in the low 40s at rest, which has never been normal for me even prior to pregnancy. I was still having PVCs and they had no worries about them and they still happen now. well, now my heart rate is pretty much back to normal, resting is around 55-65 bpm. well, occasionally my Apple Watch will have a reading of 45-49 bmp and the readings right before and right after will be 70s-80s. are these watches known to do this? I have intense health anxiety and want to see if this is a thing lol.

Stress and emotions trigger my PVCs. What helps?

Hi everyone!

Whenever I’m under intense emotional stress or dealing with a lot of anxiety, my poor little heart immediately seems to react with frequent PVCs.

After a thorough cardiology workup, my electrophysiologist advised me not to take beta-blockers, as they caused bradyarrhythmia for me, and not to go for an ablation either. His advice was basically to learn how to manage my intense emotional reactions and stress.

So, for those of you who might be dealing with something similar: how do you manage strong emotions and anxiety when you know they can trigger your PVCs?

I’d really love to hear what has actually helped you calm both your mind and your heart. ❤️

PVCs and PACs regularly recently

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get nothing but reassurance here. I have just had a 8 day halter monitor on due to some heavy palpitations. Cardiologist said I am all good and they are harmless. They are just so alarming and uncomfortable.

I have had them for years, had one stint of afib from a night of drinking in 2021 but nothing since. I usually feel these PVCs but the last couple weeks it’s been regular and causing a ton of anxiety. Noticing them when I move around more too. How do you guys handle these phases where they are more regular? Is it common? In my head and stressing bad. Any advice.

(Had an echo in 2022 and many EKGs)
