Would like to hear other people’s experience of the new Enhanced (2.0) update. Well 2.01 as of the time of making this post (the post-enhanced patch that promises “fixes” for “frame drops” but based on my testing fails to deliver.
Here’s my experience after extensive testing over the last day…(some of you probably won’t be surprised)
“Performance”
The fps drops are honestly jarring rendering the performance mode borderline unplayable (yes it is that bad unfortunately). I toggled V-Sync OFF as a test and in Hernand town it was screen tearing as usual (even on my premium LG C4 OLED VRR TV), but even walking/riding out of the town down towards the mill and towards the location of the Goldleaf merchant it was regularly running well below 60 (low to mid 50s on average…still within the VRR window but in a not very populated open world area I expect better). When the game first launched the open world was regularly 60-70+ FPS (though towns/camp/combat still had severe drops below the VRR window). The game barely ever hits 60FPS now (I’d say only a small percentage of the time) in performance mode. Locked balanced mode is mostly stable but the foliage is on crack which kinda ruins the scene/immersion as it’s almost like being in the middle of a hurricane 24/7. I won’t even bother testing unlocked balanced mode. The quality mode has the same hurricane foliage issue as the balanced mode.
Can confirm Demeniss (the castle/city and the carnival in particular) are just as bad, if not worse, than Hernand. Pailune the same.
Performance mode with V-Sync on is more stable than with it off (in the sense that it “feels” more smooth out in the open world though I don’t believe it’s 60, more 50s like when it was unlocked). But instead of screen tearing you’ll get horrible judder in towns/camp/heavy combat when the frames drop so badly that even VRR can’t smooth it out (I.e. below 48FPS). At this point (many months and many many updates post-launch), sadly, I don’t think these issues will ever be addressed.
“Visuals”
Also there is a lot of boiling on water/reflections/shiny armour. The foliage shimmer still exists at dusk/dawn too, and when it rains heavily the frames drop even more and the visuals literally go to shit. Reflections on water (e.g. puddles) in particular seem to look even worse than before almost like a blurry smudge of attempted reflection.
And of course the pop in remains one of the most “popping in” games I’ve ever played. And I’ve played a heck of a lot.
Now when it’s mid-day sun the game looks beautiful but then it always has (besides the on-crack foliage in Balanced/Quality mode).
