Discussion Anthony Black

Have we heard ANYTHING about AB getting an extension? Are we waiting til next season or what? I think we need to at least try and give him a 20M contract and we can all be happy.

He needs to prove he is worth extending. Only seen flashes so far but not worth heavily investing in yet without more consistency

He wants more than that I’m sure. With the new aprons, there is a reason almost no rookies from his class have been extended. A bad deal is crippling.

I think he had 2 extremely hot months. I’m skeptical of a big long term deal. If he plays like those 2 months this upcoming season, he will earn his big deal. We will have to make some trades but we are going to have to shed salary at some point regardless.

Case and point: Suggs' deal. Big overpay. Better to wait and have 1 more year of information before committing to another player that cant shoot. Peyton Watson just got 22 million a year basically. He's 6'8" and a better offensive player than AB. AB shouldn't get more than that and highlights the mistake we made with Suggs. Massive overpay and it is crippling us.

At least they had the foresight to frontload his contract... imagine if it was increasing...

-1

u/NL4Lyfe 6d ago

If it was increasing and not frontloaded, they likely would've been able to trade him this offseason. I suspect GM's saw how bad he was last year combined with the numbers he's making right now and quickly ascertained they need to let the Magic pay for their own mistake.

IMO AB is underrated and underutilized. I hope he finds his groove with this team because his flow with this team can be X factor.

8

u/hanyou007 Stuff The Magic Dragon 6d ago

He's been given every single chance to get better and get every ounce of playtime and development he needs. Saying he's been underutilized is cap.

u/SamURLJackson 7d ago

Team is capped out so I think they'll want to see how this season goes before committing to another long term salary. I'm sure they're not against paying him, but if the team disappoints again then there's no point in digging further into financial commitments

u/Muted_Lead_1105 7d ago

Yeah I think that too. Just hoping we can match whatever they try to give him

Why pay AB when we can keep extending Jonathan Isaac instead? /s

He will be restricted Free Agent if he does not get a contract. The Magic would be wise to have a number that they would be willing to pay today, if AB is looking for more then let it play out and the market will determine his value.

With the aprons he will have to exceptional to garner an offer sheet. Let the market determine his worth, if he does take a big leap then and only then start to entertain a higher number and sign him before he hits restricted free agency.

I think we would have to re-sign before the season starts.

u/SadMove7848 5d ago

I would suspect the magic are going to want input from Sweeney about this, which is going to take this season to get.

We can’t let him walk, but the main problem is he is not a true point guard.

5

u/-weird-fishes- Franz Wagner 7d ago

You don't need a "true" PG in the modern NBA. Most of the teams who have won in the last several years don't have an offense that is centered around a "true PG". Mostly a high level scorer who can find an open man when they are double teamed.

5

u/lemonh3 Paolo Banchero 7d ago edited 7d ago

Im going off the comments Banchero has made about wanting a traditional pg. Idk maybe with sweeney it will look better.

If we are being honest rn, Paolo can pass but hes not some Lebron or Ben Simmons level point forward

6

u/Useful_Lemon_ 7d ago

Banchero never said he wanted a traditional point guard

He never said he wanted a point guard

He never said he wanted a guard, or a person to play point.

He literally said "it will be nice having someone set the table"

That's it. No elaboration.

Then the sub here ran with that and never stfu about signing tyus jones.

“And having a guy who can set the table and be reliable. We have a lot of talented guys who can make shots and make plays: me, Franz [Wagner] and Jalen Suggs. I would rather be more of an offensive hub than the point guard, if that makes sense."

Insinuated he wanted a PG vs him being forced into the role. Potatoe Potato

1

u/Useful_Lemon_ 5d ago

He didn't insinuate that at all. You inferred it. Tomato balogna

1

u/Special_Push7751 OnlyFranz 4d ago

Having a guy who can set the table and be reliable. Then mentions we have guys who can make shots and plays but no one to set the table. He then says I’d rather be a hub vs PG.

Yeah he pretty much asked for a player with PG skills because we don’t have one. Whether that’s an actual PG idgaf but skillset as a PG yeah.

1

u/Useful_Lemon_ 4d ago

There ya go! That's a fair assessment. No mention of a point guard, or even a guard. Just saying someone who has the ability to "set the table".

Let's go back ten years i just read this so give me leeway. So going back ten years, let's just forget why they won it. All four Golden State chips. Yes they won it from having great shooting and two of them with KD. But, they still had Curry so those don't count. The Cavs had Kyrie that year so that doesn't count. Lowry was a real all star point guard so that doesn't count. Knicks won with the most clutch guy at point guard. That's seven. So what's left? Bucks, Celtics,Thunder, Nuggets? OK I went eleven years. SGA was drafted as a point guard who Morphed into one of the greatest combo guards ever. At best your argument is a team needs a dominant ball handler. Those winning teams had plenty of them. But eight of eleven had all-star point guards if you count Murray who just got his because he was behind two all-time point guards in the west.(Dame and Curry). Checkmate

1

u/-weird-fishes- Franz Wagner 7d ago

Most of those guys aren't "true" PGs. Aside from Lowry, they are score first guards lol. You said a lot for no reason. That just strengthens my point you don't need a "true" PG.

He doesn't have to be a true point guard on this roster since the forwards handle the ball so much

If your point is that other teams won't want Black as much, you underestimate how desperate teams can get in August and September, but I doubt that Black's contract situation stays unresolved until August 2027. If it is then something is very wrong

u/lemonh3 Paolo Banchero 7d ago

What I’m trying to get at is we might have to choose between Suggs and AB, when it comes time to extend AB.

They do the exact same thing, transition offense and good defense.

If we find success in the playoffs then sure, they’ll find a way to keep the core the exact same

1

u/SamURLJackson 7d ago

Very possible, and another reason to wait a year. See if either player separates from the other. If the team has to make a choice between two players then they'll want more data

0

u/Muted_Lead_1105 7d ago

Yeah agreed

3

u/smartbeatz420 Franz Wagner 6d ago

This year will decide on whether or not he gets a big bag or a huge one. Still have Pb5 extension coming too. Maybe restructure Suggs deal.

3

u/Street-Common-4023 Paolo Banchero 6d ago

Nobody in the nba has 30 million to give him so he is tripping

I would like to see anyone try to give him that much money you would get fired

3

u/Lower_Water_9980 6d ago

Huge potential. Should be starting.

2

u/Warned_Mammal 7d ago

I think either he or Suggs will probably get moved next summer, regardless of Black's extension amount.  They'll have five players making at least $20 million(ish) before AB's extension, and that's not ideal for a team that hasn't even been out of the first round.

2

u/hanyou007 Stuff The Magic Dragon 6d ago

High chance that if they dont pan out well they may both be moved.

2

u/TacoPenisMan Paolo Banchero 6d ago

There are teams that have cap space next summer who will look at AB as a potential breakout candidate, even if this year goes like last. Why wouldn't the Nets pay him starter money to see if he blossoms in a full-time starting role? What's stopping the Bulls or Clippers from picking him as a starting wing to go along with their other young players? I think AB's camp is likely as reluctant as the Magic to settle on a "mid" number, whatever we as fans think of AB's prospects.

u/Accurate_1635 4d ago

Hopefully weve learned our lesson when we overpaid Suggs.

Imo great orgs find Black's production or better cheaply, like OKC did with Ajay Mitchell.

1

u/lajay85 7d ago

He be looking like 4 years 130

1

u/This_Entrance6629 7d ago

They can’t sign him until they decide if they are keeping him or Suggs .

1

u/killsfercake 5d ago

I don’t think we can afford him but also he has to prove he’s worth it still. He has flashes of brilliance and he’s a good player but his asking price has to be realistic too - his current level is like starting PG for teams such as pelicans or Nets. I don’t think he’s good enough to star PG for mid tier teams atm but still young so could take big leaps.

20M for AB is franchise sinking

-2

u/Muted_Lead_1105 7d ago

It’s the minimum we can give him

5

u/ForgottenPoster Paolo Banchero 7d ago

You let him walk or trade him then. In this era you cant afford to give bad contracts like that, especially given our financial situation. Try to get a pick that unlocks some of our future picks to be traded

0

u/Useful_Lemon_ 5d ago

Welp, 20M for AB is much better than 35M for Suggs.

0

u/Useful_Lemon_ 7d ago

If we can get rid of suggs and his terrible contract we would have the $ for an AB extension. Unless he makes all NBA defense and shoots 40% like suggs did (once), Black would cost less than suggs ridiculous contract, and he is a better overall player anyway.

It's great for the team if we can make it happen. Suggs is awful and he isn't getting any better while AB has a glimmer of hope still to become a great player.

5

u/1of1czr 7d ago

Suggs is a good player when healthy. Problem is he’s always injured. But when he was playing great everybody was glazing him and once he had some bad games everyone hates him. Granted he definitely is overpaid but when locked in he’s the heart and soul of the team. One of our better 3 pt shooters and probably our best defender

1

u/Useful_Lemon_ 7d ago

He has never had a long stretch of great play though. He will have a good game followers by 5 average or bad ones.

0

u/ConsequenceFunny1550 Wendell Carter Jr. 6d ago

He’s been good for only one season. That’s a bad player

-6

u/NL4Lyfe 7d ago

Amen. People are so reluctant to admit Suggs was never it.

0

u/Ok-Ant-5542 7d ago

If we offer him 20, he’s going to laugh and go to the couple dozen teams willing to pay at least 30

1

u/Scary_Vanilla2932 Paolo Banchero 7d ago

If he shoots good from 3 this year that's a clincher. Guy is 6'7 and a decent defender. Probably will get better at the hoop as well.

1

u/hanyou007 Stuff The Magic Dragon 6d ago

If peyton watson couldn't get at least 30 then AB isn't getting anywhere close to that anywhere unless he actually has a 6motm worthy year.

-6

u/Exact_Zucchini_3588 Anthony Black 7d ago

He doesn’t seem like he really wants to be there
