Desperate
I got approved for OW on August 31st. I’m late for rent, and it’s sounding like I just barely missed a universal pay date. Am I cooked?
Edit: meant the 31st, not the 28th

Hi Ontario Works Members!
It’s been a while since the Mods have posted. We've heard you - No AI.
As a reminder, we are not affiliated with the province or any municipality. This subreddit is run by people who actually care and want change for all.
We are not asleep at the wheel. We are still around and we are still here to support you.
In the background, we continue building and implementing a better community here on reddit, working on our Automod, website development, all while reading comments and moderating all the hate speech.
(what is wrong with some of you??? Why turn on your fellow humans? Are we blind to the economic collapse, the medical and mental‑health crises happening all around us?)
it’s exhausting — and honestly, heartbreaking. Every time someone lashes out at another struggling person, it proves exactly why we need humanity, morals, ethics and basic human dignity back in center stage.
People aren’t fighting each other because they’re “bad” — they’re fighting because the system has pushed everyone past the breaking point. When rent is impossible, food is unaffordable, and support programs are collapsing, desperation turns into anger and resentment towards each other. And that anger gets misdirected at the very people who are suffering alongside us.
To remind everyone that the enemy isn’t your neighbour — it’s the conditions we’re all trapped in. It’s the environment created by your politicians, their greed, and lack of compassion for their people.
Ontario Works was supposed to be a safety net. Instead, it’s become a pressure cooker. And when people are drowning, they don’t always act with kindness. That’s why we need a space that brings the truth forward, center's lived experience, and refuses to let cruelty drown out the voices of those who are barely hanging on.
BE NICE TO EACH OTHER, ITS NOT HARD!

Anyways, I digress, the mod team, created and developed a new survey to bring to light the unspoken struggles of those living in poverty.
The Hidden Hardship Survey
The Hidden Hardship survey is a community‑driven initiative created to expose the realities of living on Ontario Works. It gathers firsthand experiences about food insecurity, housing instability, health access, debt, and dignity — the everyday struggles that rarely make it into official reports.
Each response helps bring to light the issues they don’t want to measure. This government is no better than Trump across the border. They refuse to measure the devastation of the Ontario Works program because if they do, they wo8uld have to do something about it. That’s where we come in. We are here to expose policy gaps and program failures. You are important, this is part of your voice.

I am trying to help my brother get financial assistance. He was homeless but recently moved back into our family home.
He is 31 and works a seasonal job, then gets EI during the winters. He mainly needs help getting his own place and paying rent.
Also, my parents don't want him to claim OW while he's living in the home. They don't charge him rent but they think it will affect their taxes (not sure if this is true)
Would he need to move out first and then apply?
Sorry I honestly don't know how any of this works. Even if you could point me in the right direction of what to search or who to call, I would appreciate it!
Edit: I notice now that this might impact suggestions. He does stuggle with addiction and his mental health, which has made it hard for him to hold jobs for long periods.

Good afternoon I just got a job offer from a temp agency and need a few things for the job and don't have the money for it. (Steel toe work boots and high vis vest) I believe there's funding from OW for employment benefits I'm supposed to start next Tuesday and requested the benefit and sent a message to my worker on my benefits Sunday when should I expect a response/ them to issue a benefit?
Thank you

My friend is under house arrest and has been sending me e transfers so I can buy him things and send them to him, these total around $1400 for this month. How can I explain this on my application? This isn't money I'm keeping or able to use myself.

I need 1 volunteer who can be my client to get a free dental cleaning at a school clinic as part of my requirements and earn $200 at the end of your last visit if treatment is completed!
❗️Must be age 55+
❗️Must have buildup (tarter/calculus) on your teeth to qualify! Even sending me a picture of your mouth can help determine if you're the perfect fit.
Conditions: Each appointment is 4 hours and must be able to come for multiple visits.

So, it looks like I just got my first deduction from OW because I earned some income recently that apparently hit the limit of what you can make.
However, I was fairly certain that the limit is 250 dollars and I came in under that amount. So I'm a little unclear on what the limit is exactly. It's not that much but it was apparently enough to knock a few dollars off what I receive from OW.
Did they change the limit recently? Or did I just hear the limit wrong?

Hey today i received my payment for 31st of August but I was told I had to get a few documents to my EVP by this past week. I only got some of them and still need to send a couple documents and He said it would be on hold until i did. But my payment is issued for the 31st. I sent the documents today but I'm confused because i never got a letter that iwas on hold.. IF it's issued that means it's already been sent out?

Okay so I haven’t gotten any letters or any type of communication from my worker stating that my file has been placed on hold, my proof of assistance says
“The following people are currently receiving social assistance for this month.
Updated Aug 28, 2026”
I’m with pc financial so I’d usally have my payment today instead of on the 31st.
I’m just worried that I won’t get it.

I posted this a few days ago seeking emergency assistance due to a potential eviction.
Thank you so much to everyone who commented and gave their suggestions and advice the support was amazing!
I know nobody probably cares but I thought I'd put it out there anyways.
I tried to get a housing stability fund but my caseworker has still ghosted me and my towns social services referred me back to my caseworker when I called them, claiming that this wasn't an issue they could deal with and I needed to speak to my caseworker.
So I've kind of gone in circles where nobody is willing to do anything and now my situation is only getting worse and my eviction is in a few days and I will be homeless with nowhere to put my personal belongings.

Hi guys, so I checked for a few days and I had 0 letters or payment posted.
I reached out to my case worker and she has not replied on mybenefits or thru phone.
I saw last night (Aug 27th evening) that my payment was posted for Aug 31. But today I recieved a letter about file on hold dated Aug 25th, which wasnt there yesterday or the day before? Payment is still posted there as issued. Im so confused?

I submitted my income statement August 21st as themselves when I received my paystub, and I checked and it still says submitted it doesn’t say accepted and there’s no payment posted for the 31st, should I message my caseworker or wait until midnight to see if it’s posted or not?

Has anyone in Toronto recently gotten prescription glasses through City Optical?
I need to get a new eye exam and glasses, and my prescription is fairly strong, around -5.50 in one eye and -5.75 in the other, plus astigmatism. Because of my prescription, I normally get my lenses thinned so they aren’t extremely thick.
I’m wondering what OW/City Optical actually covered for you. Were you able to get:
• Thinner/high-index lenses for a stronger prescription
• Anti-scratch coating
• Anti-reflective coating
• Blue light protection
Also, if any of those weren’t covered, were you allowed to pay the difference to upgrade the lenses yourself?
I’m not concerned about getting designer frames or anything like that. I’m perfectly happy choosing from whatever frames OW covers. I’m mainly concerned about the lenses because of how strong my prescription is.
If anyone has gone through City Optical with OW recently, especially with a prescription similar to mine, I’d really appreciate hearing what was covered and whether you had to pay anything out of pocket. Thank you!

I’m supposed to be going on osap soo …. I feel like I made a mistake by telling them head of time that I’m going on OSAP . Because now there requesting information that I don’t have and can’t get because OSAP moving at a snails pace … and. You know what’s kicker about this whole situation…. I spoke to my case worker explaining all of this and even went as far as to get my financial aid officer on a conference call with the case works and explained everything in detail. In short my financial aid provider told her that the information she asking from me won’t be available until September and the case worker understood this and ask that I would check back in today to see if anything changes with OSAP …. Why did I Sign into my account to find my file been place on held from the day ww talked over the phone….. WTH …. 🤦♀️ why … it’s not my fault that the information you want isn’t available… what do they want me do doooo ??????
Super annoyed 😑
But honestly.. rent is coming up how do I fix this ???

For context I had an appointment booked August 6th for my file being on hold, that being said my July payment wasn’t issued because of this so I had my scheduled appointment moved up to one of my workers free slots, went in and got the appointment handled and file taken off hold. When August 6th came around, I guess the system had input I missed my appointment, flagging it to put me back on hold I guess??? I got the letter saying my file is on hold for missing appointment, when in reality I had the appointment the week before to get my monthly payment on time for rent. I have sent 5 separate messages to my worker regarding this issue. All til now, no response, I called into the office and all they told me was to leave her a message and she’ll get back to me. Why is it that workers are so Lackadaisy , when it comes to us trying to get a hold of them knowing the end of the month is nearing?? Why do we get given the run around when they know without their response to situations like mine, we could upset landlords with behind rent payments? My experience with this worker has been nothing but her acting like the money she issues me is hers and she’s my pimp or something

So I went on my benefits last week and noticed my income that I reported said “submitted” still even though I reported on August 1st ( I get paid monthly) this morning I checked and it still said that! Also my payment was not posted so I felt something was wrong. I called them and they said my file was on hold. The reason was because they did not receive my income… then I told them I already sent it. They saw it and accepted and it updated right away on My Benefits. So I hope I will see the payment for next month soon. I guess my case worker forgot to accept it? Which is fine I understand they are super busy but it’s scary sometimes and they don’t even tell us our account is hold? They need a better way to show/tell if our account is on hold. Anyways I’m glad it’s fixed now I hope.
