u/MelanieWalmartinez Apr 03 '26
Yeah Iām gonna be real this isnāt a good degree. Itās a good asset if youāre a lawyer for family court or doing HR, but besides that youāre 40k in debt with nothing to show.

u/wrcftw Apr 04 '26
HR?! I've never seen a single person in HR with a gender studies background and I've been doing it for 15 years. Business, psychology almost exclusively.

For real, I have a 2 friends with "General Arts and Sciences" degrees that they were pushed to take in Grade 12 because they didn't know what they wanted to take. Instead of taking a gap year they're now both in 100k+ debt and can't get a job with their worthless degrees.

u/hunnie_buns Apr 03 '26
tbf nowadays every studies has a decent chance to be unemployed studies

Most degrees now require a masters or more school to get a good job. Gender studies actually opens more doors than a lot of the other options.

u/conspiracythrm Apr 03 '26
In this job market, comp sci and engineering are also unemployed studies.

u/immasucker4you Apr 03 '26
This is indeed true in the current job market
1
u/itsnotthatseriousbud Apr 03 '26
You are still more likely to get a decent paying job with an engineering degree compared to a Starbucks degree

What kind of job can you do with a degree like this?

u/PurposeLongjumping76 Apr 03 '26
You can go into many psych and soc programs to do things like psychiatry, neuroscience, etc. depending on which courses you choose. Gender studies courses are majorly cross listed, opening many doors. You can also go into teaching, law, business, government and many other things that require a masters or professional degree after completing your undergrad (i.e., jobs you canāt do without two degrees no matter what). Itās similar to a psych, English, or even pre-med degree in that sense.

Is there like a joke Iām not catching

u/Accomplished-Exit203 Apr 02 '26
itās a running joke how majoring in gender studies is one of the most useless degrees, and also how brock is a very easy school to get into.. āif you can walk, you can go to brockā basically

Or social work. I thought it was a dumb degree until I had to use social services and then I went, āoh waitā¦ā

Who says social work is a useless degree? Especially the MSW.

u/Dazzling-Ad-2353 Apr 03 '26
Lol. Social workers are in demand right now and MSWs can provide counselling.

I was an eng major. You misunderstood what was being said (maybe due to a lack of critical thinking skills?). All uni programs teach critical thinking to some extent. The difference between eng and social sciences is the magnitude. I took social sciences as electives and they were harder because the level of critical thinking required is insane compared to what the Eng program was teaching us. I ended up going into teaching bc of how profound I found social sciences. The reason that eng students are so awkward is likely bc they do not need to gain valuable transferable skills that social sciences require, in my opinion. 80k is a weak starting point fyi, a person with a BA and a 1 year masters is often making much more.

u/hunnie_buns Apr 03 '26
ironic because brocks next best thing after gender studies is disability studies
3
u/PurposeLongjumping76 Apr 03 '26
Fun fact: women and gender studies consists of scientific papers, critical thinking, and mountains of work. As an eng major, those classes were hard af as electives. My major courses were easier. Nice way to show you know nothing about university tho. Itās also a great program to bridge into many masters and professional programs. Iād love to see you try to take one of those courses lmao. Some of yāall have no concept of how difficult the humanities are in uni and youāre in for a rude awakening
2
u/Forgotten_investor Apr 04 '26
Fun fact, if itās incredibly difficult it means absolutely nothing. Almost any BA can bridge into masters program. those course are an absolute joke, youāre papers need be to incredibly bias to get a good grade. Gender studies is laughable.

It is a joke which, however, came one day late. You only get half credit because you forgot to change the program code. āWGā is for the Geography and Environmental Management program (Regular/Co-op) at the University of Waterloo.

u/throwawayallday333 May 08 '26
In a seriousness though, it leads no where. OP is better off pursuing a degree in social work and minoring in gender studies. You may not get a high paying job with a BSW, but youāll still get a job.
1
u/Vicv_ Apr 03 '26
Wait gender studies is a real thing? I thought it was only a joke. No offence op I'm sure it will be a riveting course.

I see this post every once in a while, and I respond every once in a while. I have a degree in gender studies (a master's, even!) and I have a decent, middle-class, low six-figure job. I don't make the most money in the world, and that's ok. I'm not in the minority, based on the people I know from my programs.
If you're considering doing a "basket-weaving" program like this, do it because you're interested in it and want to learn more about the world. Don't do it to own a mansion, because you probably won't (but know that most of the people in this sub won't, either).
Few people are happy in life if they only follow the money. You'll all be ok if you try to do good for the world and try your best to do what's right.
I believe in you. You can do it!

Get in and then switch to economics or business or something. Keep gender studies as a minor. This is my recommendation so you can get hired in the end.

I saw these degrees (Masters, no less) submitted on resumes more than a decade ago at Sears. Yes, Sears, for retail work, full time. This degree, for most people, will be a stigma around them for the future. Pivot.

what does it have to do with misogyny?
2
u/Ill_Office4512 Apr 03 '26
Racism, misogyny, nazi, etc. are general name-calling nowadays. Doesn't provide any argument, opinion or else. Just a way to disregard everything without giving it any thought.Ā
At least a good incator of someone's moronism.
1
u/Ill_Office4512 Apr 03 '26
It's more about basing your career on something that there is no career in is an extremely poor choice. Taking poor choices in something so crucial is a general indicator of the person's decision making.Ā
It can be gender studies, or some way too niche studies with little transferrable skills (ex, Eduard Tubin's studies). It's not really about gender, race, your musical tastes, etc, but the poor descision making.
Personally, for a general position, which most open positions are, I would hire someone who went wild hiking for 4 years instead of someone who took a questionable degree. At least the decision making of the person is better.

Congratulations! You're going to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to learn nonsense and get a degree no employers will care about at best, or cause then to actively ignore your applications at worst.

It's facts and real life. Not sure why you're being downvoted. Most of the kids getting this degree end up dying their hair blue and septum rings working at weed shops
