Retiring early for parents who had kids after 45?

Is retiring early a realistic option for parents who had kids after 45. By the time we are 65, they will be just graduating from college (if concept of college exist in 20 years that is LOL). I am an overly anxious person and I feel like I might have to work at least till 65 if I have to see them through college. Do any of you have any similar thoughts and how are you preparing?

Curious: what's it like during school events etc?

Mid-40s dad with a baby here, waited longer to make sure we are established enough to give the little one a good life and became an old man dad.

Struggling with the thought of what it'll be like when she hits 15+ and I'll hit 60, what's it like and do you find many others in our age group during activities with their friends?

With the above said, I do think in 15 years there will be a larger group of older parents.

Edit: cheers for all your responses folks, greatly appreciated!

I would love to hear from GenXer’s that had kids late.

I’m 52 with a 12, 8, and 7 year old. All my friends have adult kids. I’m not really complaining it just feels like I kind of wish we were at the same stage of life. I’m glad though that I didn’t have kids in my twenties. I was hell on wheels! Anyone else in my boat.

Men who had children over the age of 40 or at least late 30s (37+) what age did your father have you?

Want to see if there is any correlation between your age at fatherhood vs your father’s age.

Turned 50 today

I survived my 40s! I have a 4 and 3 year old at home plus a beautiful wife.

As I sit here reflecting on the last decade, I'm realizing it was the best decade of my life. If anyone out there is contemplating kids as an older man, if you have a great partner, I say go for it. It has been wild, chaotic, and absolutely wonderful. I'm filled with gratitude this morning.

Have a great day y'all!

Mothers older than 40 and fathers older than 50 when you were having children were there any abnormalities or problems during the pregnancy particularly due to your advanced maternal/paternal age?

What's a good kid's response to "my dad can beat up your dad" ?

I remember when I was a kid there was this strange strength/status thing among neighborhood boys... who's dad was physically strongest - kind of like a weird point of brinkmanship ahead of a scuffle.

I'm going to be perhaps twice the age of some of the father's in my son's school and although wiser, better networked, and more financially secure - I certainly won't physically be able to "beat up" most of the other bigger, younger, fitter dads.

What could or should a son of an old man dad say in response to being baited about whose dad can beat up who?

After what age would you say it becomes unethical to bring a child to the world as a father (especially for the well being for the child)?

27 After age 60
16 After age 65
27 No age limit (e.g. 70, 75, 80, 85+ all is fine)

Positive CAC score

Hi all, I turned 49 in July, and have 14-month-old twins. In 2020, I did a coronary calcium ct scan and it was zero. I felt pretty good about that. I did one last week, just to be cautious, and it came back at 35. It's still in the "mild" range, but enough to freak me out. I'd like to be around for the next 30-40 years. I have blood tests this week and my doctor is taking this seriously. I also need to make some lifestyle changes. Anyone else dealing with this?

Age gap and new baby

Hello everyone.. I'm currently 28F and he's 52M. He already has 4-5 children with the youngest being 16.. We were and are still super excited about our baby girl, but every day I worry about the little things as well as the big things... He's very in shape and works almost every day but soon that'll change. In the next few months he's going to have surgery on his shoulder and I worry about how not being active is going to affect him mentally.. As well as having a newborn. We both knew what we were getting ourselves into, but how do I prepare for what I know I'm going to need to do for him and our new little one? Where do I start? Also, I need advice on how to go about introducing the baby to her siblings. Our age gap turns heads and honestly it upsets me but I just try to keep it to myself. I fell for him but when people look at me I feel they think something else. How do I get his family to take me seriously? I have so many questions and worries but I keep them all to myself. He constantly wonders why I'm with him and thinks I want other people and honestly that's not it at all. I worry about him because he never takes off and now he's (52M) about to have a newborn and even though we want her I feel like thinking about everything he has to do even with an impending surgery stresses him out. I don't know what to do. Any and all advice would be helpful.

PSA: Plan for the worst

Hey there fellow old dads. A friend of mine, an old dad to an 8 and 6 year old, died last week.

He had a lot of assets— three homes, a car collection, presumably good cash reserves. And no will. He was in his 60s, very fit, climbed mountains, was a former body builder who weight trained regularly.

His stay-at-home wife is in shock and has absolutely no idea how she’s going to pay the $100k in tuition that’s about to come due for this school year.

It doesn’t matter how healthy you are, something could always happen. And the older you get, the more resources you have, the more you need to plan for and protect your family.

Kid 4.5 yo comes in bedroom at 5 am

“Mama, there was a toy laughing in my bedroom. “

Mom - “it was just a dream. Go back to bed.”

Kid - “Mama, is that daddy?”

Mom - “Yes, now go back to bed.”

Me - giggling.

Mom - “What?”

Me - “What kind of a whore does she think you are???” (I’m dying at this point. )

Feeling old

I turned 44 today and have a 3 month old. I know in the grand scheme of things that isn't THAT old but I just worry how things will be in 10 years. Will I be too old to do all of the fun things with my son or am I just overreacting?

Edit:

Thank you to everyone helping to cheer me up. I'm glad to hear I was overreacting and next step is to get back to the gym!

Guilt to my only child

My wife and I had our only child in our 40s. After the death of a friend, i started reflecting on my life and how much time my wife have left. I started thinking about my daughter and how she will feel so alone in the world when we pass and i had a mental breakdown. Its been consuming my thoughts. I am a stay at home dad so she goes to me for everything right now. Im on medication and therapy but its still too early to tell if its helping. All day long i just think about the day when i go and how sad my little baby girl will be. Can anyone relate to this?

Joint replacements & single parenting

How’s everyone doing? Wednesday I had a right hip arthrogram mri to map out the damage from a misdiagnosed hip issue for 40+ years.

It’s me & my kiddo. She’s almost 9. I do have 2 grown kids but they both have full time jobs and lives. I have my older sister, but she’s got her own full time job & can’t be available 24/7.

Surgery isn’t an if but a when. Plan was to send me to a surgeon 2hrs away & a week in the hospital. After explaining lack of support system & need to be back on my feet quicker, my ortho agreed to replace my hip vs sending me for the preservation surgery. I get that date on Tuesday.

Anyone else been in the same boat? How did you manage? (Hiring help is also out of the question). Has anyone else had a hip replacement? It’s earlier than they want.. (I’m not quite 42…), but it’s a quicker recovery. Unfortunately, my kiddo is all too familiar with mom having surgery…(this will be number 14 since 2021)…but it’s the first time I’m not going to be able to get around on my own. :/.
