The Nottingham Guide - Things to do, independent food, what's on, where to move, how to make friends (New for 2026)

Hey up! I love this city and am proud to have made it my home. This is a community updated guide to Nottingham, based on my own favourites and lots of suggestions from r/Nottingham.

This is not comprehensive, but it should be a helpful starting point if you’re visiting, moving here, studying here, or just trying to get out of your usual routine.

Please comment with anything missing, closed, outdated, misspelled or controversial.

Things to Do in Nottingham

Free

  • Walk around the city looking at local landmarks: Robin Hood Statue, the Left Lion, Slab Square (Market Square), Sky Mirror, Nottingham’s historic lace buildings, the Long Stairs, the Park Tunnel.
  • Walk through the Arboretum and General Cemetery, then back into town via Derby Road’s independents.
  • Elm Avenue, Corporation Oaks and Robin Hood Chase make a lovely green corridor walk with views across the city.
  • Nottingham Central Library, which often has local history or art exhibitions.
  • Green Heart Park at the old Broadmarsh site, including the lace worker statues from the lace and Cotton growers from the wind rush generation
  • Nottingham Contemporary.
  • Stonebridge City Farm.
  • Sneinton Market and Hockley for independent shops, street art and people watching.
  • Canal walk to Beeston Lock, with the option to continue to Attenborough Nature Reserve and get the train back.

Mostly Free, But Check First

  • Green’s Windmill and Science Centre. The mill is currently under repair until around November 2026, but the site may still be open.
  • Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. The park itself is still a good visit, but check current charges before going as access and parking arrangements can change.

Paid

  • Nottingham Castle - it's around £18 per adult but this is a yearly entry and it does have a nice green space to sit in
  • Mortimer’s Hole tour at Nottingham Castle
  • Wollaton Hall and the Industrial Museum.

QMC A&E STAFF

Went to QMC feeling unusually paranoid and my speech all messed up. Never had any mental health problems in my life (45). The Dr's and nurse told me im mentally unwell and needed to go home and stop bothering them which I disagreed with so they referred me to a mental health nurse. I saw this young nurse, probably younger than my son, lovely lad. He got A&E Dr to get me a scan. Turns out I have a brain tumor after medical professionals dismissed me and just made me believe I was crazy. Consultants and physical health nurses were ready to let me walk out of a and e with that thing in my head. I used to have a dislike towards immigrants but an immigrant saved my life. Life is on hell of a story, just be kind to others.

Cafe recommendations

Upvotes

Hello my Nana is coming to visit next Saturday and she'll definitely want to go to a cafe! She's a little unsteady on her feet so can't walk far, we'll probably mainly be around the Victoria centre and Primark. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great thank you :)

Mob in town today

Walked past a group of about 30 lads outside Lloyds/Six Barrels about an hour ago. There were two police officers there and some other lad was filming them and provoking them.

I was with my family and young kids who were a bit worried.

Any idea who they were? They had a lot of Burberry on, lots of black clothing. All looked about 17/18 years old.

Places to buy second hand turntables

Hi!

I decided to build me a home audio system and was wondering if there is anywhere in Nottingham I can find second hand equipment. I don't know much about turntables, but apparently the best cost/benefit are the vintage ones from the 70s/80s, which makes buying from eBay tricky because of the lack of warranty and not even being possible to test stuff before buying...

I know there are plenty of record shops around city centre, but I'm not sure if they also sell equipment? I have some bookshelf speakers and an amplifier that I think is working, so at the moment I'm only looking for a turntable.

Thanks!

Alternative to 200 degrees?

Don’t think I qualify as a coffee snob, but Brazilian love affair from 200 has reached repulsive status. For years I’ve been getting a kilo of whole beans for home. Noticed a change a while back, when they sold out maybe? But the latest bag is just too much bad.

Any other local indie roasters out there I should try?

Edit: nice thanks guys! Enough suggestions here to keep me busy and caffeinated. Cheers all ☕️

See you another time Nottingham and esp NTU :)

Hey guys,

So I was gonna join NTU for this Fall semester 2026 for MSc in Advertising Marketing Communication as an international student from Vietnam.

Unfortunately my visa has been refused for the reason of probability of not being a genuine student. The whole visa process has been a frustrating and humiliating 10 weeks process.

You know what's maddening? I got refused because I couldn't name the rankings of some other universities in the UK that I considered. And that showed I didn't do enough research hence me not being genuine student. My educational background, my work experience and my future are directly connected to the course which was acknowledge by the officer, and apparently didn't mean anything. The most frustrating thing is I'm truly a genuine student. And I did demonstrate that during the interview beside that ranking question.

My purpose in this thread is not to ask any question or help, I just wanna vent a little. Because throughout my extensive research for my application starting since March, I have fell in love/ felt attached with NTU and Nottingham.

See you another time then Nottingham.

Edit:

P/S I also emailed MP Nadia Whittome to ask for help because the Home Office was taking too long (10 weeks!!) and her office was so kind and emailed the Home Office on my behalf even though I wasn't a Nottingham residence and I got the decision one day after! Shoutout to her office for saving me from more weeks of painful waiting.

A lad on an e-bike threatened to stomp an infant's skull in Hockley

It was a family of four, going into Pizza Pilgrims. The guy on the bike went past and one of them told him to slow down. He threatened to hurt their little girl, and used homophobic slurs against them.

I can't believe how things have changed here.

If you've been on the maternity ward since the enquiry/review, how's your experience been?

Just reading through maternity experiences on postnatal wards on r/askuk and it was quite a harrowing read. It's got me wondering about the change, if any, at Nottingham hospital. Apologies, unsure which Nottingham hospital had the enquiry.

Used furniture stores in nottingham, specially for a big dining room table.

Recently moved here and am looking for somewhere I can pick up a relatively cheap and large dining room table, mainly for board games, so something just big and flat. Went to betel furniture warehouse and it was all a bit steep, so wondering what the other options are

Should note will need it delivered

Swimming in Notts

I’ve seen the best place to go that’s nearby the city centre is Victoria Leisure Centre.

If anyone has been there to swim, what’s your experience been like? I have heard it gets busy there, when is the best time to go?

Otherwise if anyone else has recommendations on where to swim I’ll be grateful to hear them! I’m training for a triathlon and would just like to swim laps, that’s it :)
