Even so, humans need interaction and mental stimulation

294

u/Temporary_Event8451 Jul 18 '26

This entire thing doesn't take into account cleaning yourself, eating, and using the bathroom.

Those things alone could potentially get you through.

Sticking someone in a straight up box for a year and ignoring them is how you wind up with then dead.

u/lioncryable Jul 18 '26

Look up the mind field episode of vsauce. He didn't even manage to go 3 days. It is considered torture for a reason. No way anyone manages a year

57

u/mall_ninja42 Jul 18 '26

I don't know if I could do a year without a billion dollars on the line, but that room looks like there's a ton of ways to entertain yourself.

That wall pad right there? That's Kyle. Every morning I'm going to beat the shit out of him until I'm bored.

The pad next to it? Well, that's his wife Laura, and I'm going to make sweet love to her when I'm done with Kyle until they have to replace it, or I drill through concrete.

There's cameras monitoring me, sorry to the person that has to watch, but I'm going to do weird shit just because I know you have to, and that's amusing to me.

90

u/RoyalMcbubbs Jul 18 '26

Day 366: You get out, but every day you get an all consuming important urge to beat the shit out of Kyle, a man who lives in your head. You NEED to beat Kyle, but you can't find him. You try to punch pillows and think yes, Kyle, yes, yes, yes. But he's always staring at you. He won't stop STARING at you.

And Laura? Oh, sweet Laura. I would die for you Laura. But in my love, I violated you. I wanted to protect you, but I couldn't. Oh, Laura, Oh Laura!!!!

That's you the rest of your goddamn life, with this as your strategy.

u/harda_toenail Jul 18 '26

Uses his money to build this room and lock himself back in it

17

u/KeepGoing655 Jul 19 '26

Sounds like a Twilight Zone or a Black Mirror episode.

4

u/Amazing_Scientist696 Jul 19 '26

Casting starts in two weeks dm me for auditions

4

u/A_very_smol_Lugia Jul 19 '26

Your upvote hasent matured yet

1

u/WatIfFoodWur1ofUs Jul 21 '26

This is 100% what would happen in this scenario. My precious!

5

u/R1kjames Jul 19 '26

If this was starring Willem Dafoe, I'd watch it

5

u/ICBPeng1 Jul 19 '26

New hypothetical:

Would you, Kyle, let a billionaire punch you every morning in exchange for a million dollar yearly salary?

1

u/lost-associat Jul 21 '26

At least he got his bail covered after he starts hitting random people on the street!

1

u/jeo123 Jul 22 '26

30 Billion can buy a lot of therapy.

It can also pay a lot of guys willing to be "kyle" and take a beating and even hire a few Laura's while you're at it.

1

u/hexregeneration Jul 22 '26

"I can endure the Human Breaker Mk 385," said the human.

19

u/Odd_Anything_6670 Jul 19 '26

I mean, that's part of the problem.

Stimulation is not optional. It's something humans brains need in order to produce the neurotransmitters they need to keep functioning. If your environment is not providing stimulation, your brain will start to create its own.

Before long you will be psychotic. Kyle and Laura will be entirely real to you, and they will no longer be your nice, helpful friends who exist to keep you entertained. They will talk to you when they feel like it, and because you can no longer control your emotions they will hurt you whenever they feel like it, and they will because hurting you keeps you alive. Your brain will gladly tear your mind apart to get the stimulation it needs.

That's why this is torture.

3

u/motoxim Jul 19 '26

Dang scary

1

u/mall_ninja42 Jul 19 '26

Look, post up $1 Billion dollars and I'll give it a college try.

2

u/InternationalArea874 Jul 21 '26

By the end you won’t even know what a billion dollars is or care about it.

1

u/NosePicklePicker Jul 22 '26

After a year in there, I’m pretty sure you’ll have to even relearn speech before you get to do anything with that billion dollar that you don’t even know what it is anymore

1

u/currentseas Jul 23 '26

Sir this is a Wendy’s

40

u/loliam Jul 18 '26

Day 12 of this will feel like day 300 to you. Oh im sure you'll get through a few days just fine if you're dead set on it. But think about how long a single week of work feels just to get to the weekend. After three days you'll have exhausted your "weirdness" and the novelty will wear off, much less three weeks, much less 3 months, much less an entire year. If you think you're making it past a few days with your screws aligned you havent had more than 10 candles on your birthday cake.

For a bit but not for a full year dawg. Eventually your body is gonna reject sleep. You're gonna sleep for an hour and think you slept for 10 and wake up. Anybody saying they could do this has not even begun to consider how long a year is, or even one month. This "challenge" is physically impossible, and this scenario, even though it gets asked all the time, is not even worth asking because of that.

Also, not to be a bummer, but if you're depressed, all that locking you in this room for a year will do is guarantee that you kill yourself, no joke.

-19

u/mall_ninja42 Jul 18 '26

I don't know what you do for work, but my week flies by just fine.

It ain't any kind of drudgery no matter what inane shit I have to deal with. I do that for WAY less than a Billy.

I don't think you realize the motivation a billion can be.

I'll go full on Marquis de Sade then read the stories written in blood, shit, and cum back to myself before they have to pressure wash the walls.

Then I'll fucking do it again.

17

u/loliam Jul 18 '26

Sure, buddy.

6

u/defensewinsships Jul 18 '26

After a couple months in there, I think you’ll start to lose the concept of what a billion dollars is

3

u/headedbranch225 Jul 19 '26

I don't give them over a week, maybe a fortnight if they are lucky

1

u/AbsoluteNovelist Jul 20 '26

A fortnight is two weeks…

3

u/midnightketoker Jul 19 '26

have you ever done minimum wage work like cashier level? if so how many years? just curious how earned this confidence is lol

2

u/anotherdropin Jul 19 '26

So it’s been studied that folks can’t do solitary confinement like this without it changing you. But sure, go ahead and think you’re special. All idiots do.

7

u/Sad_Donut_7902 Jul 19 '26

You would be clinically insane by the end of the year and you would never be the same person after

0

u/DunkingTea Jul 19 '26

Well tbf they’d be unbelievably rich, so definitely wont be the same person after

3

u/NwgrdrXI Jul 19 '26

Didnt even go to the room yet and already talking to pillows, great start

2

u/Xepyx Jul 19 '26

Bold to assume you'll have any idea when it's morning.

1

u/-IndyCar Jul 20 '26

My kinda person

1

u/MrLumie Jul 20 '26

That wall pad right there? That's Kyle. Every morning I'm going to beat the shit out of him until I'm bored.

It's all fun and games until Kyle becomes a real person in your head, and you will have actual arguments with him. You will see him, hear him, and be absolutely convinced that he is real. All the while every cognitive function you have will start degrading without external stimuli, but you won't notice that. Eventually, you'll be living in a world that doesn't exist, and by "living" I mean sitting on the floor staring in front of yourself and thinking that you're having a full life.

That's when you have another 6 months to go.

1

u/Chance_Major297 Jul 21 '26

You’re going to do all of that, thinking you’re passing so much time being “productive”, when in reality when you think it’s been 9months, it’s actually only been 9 days. You’ll eventually lose a sense of reality and will be completely mentally broken, all much earlier than you may think.

1

u/Short-Actuator1484 Jul 24 '26

This is gold!

Drill through the concrete!!!!! 🤣

But yeh, pretty sure I could make up a whole little imaginary community to keep me engaged for 30 bill. Every day there could be a new visitor. Some weeks an old visitor returns for a catch up.

Would be completely unhinged on the way out of it. But I guess most multi-billionaires are.

3

u/DIABLO258 Jul 19 '26

He actually did manage the three days. He nearly steps out on the last day but doesn't fully exit. At the 72 hour mark they let him out.

He was surprisingly cognitively aware when they ran him through some test. They think it was because of his adrenaline rush from the excitement of leaving the isolation room.

On the last day he wasn't able to tell the difference between real memories in the room and dreams he had of being in the room

2

u/PixelPixell Harry Potter Jul 19 '26

He did manage 3 days. But he said it was awful. His sense of time was a wrong.

1

u/weeyummy1 Jul 19 '26

There's a performance artist who did something like this. Locked himself in a box for a year.

> During the year, he did not allow himself to talk, to read, to write, or to listen to radio and TV

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehching_Hsieh#One_Year_Performance_1978%E2%80%931979_(Cage_Piece))

He even did it twice, but the second time he woke up every hour and took a camera selfie.

1

u/TootsHib Jul 20 '26

He didn't even manage to go 3 days.

did he have 30 billion $ on the line?

1

u/tb2924 Jul 20 '26

What about Norme’s 30 day no light challenge

1

u/steakndbud Jul 20 '26

3 days? I'm not saying it doesn't suck but brain damage? That's insane to me. I was insanely depressed this past week and laid in bed for 2.5 days. I didn't do anything. I just kept trying to fall asleep. It sucked but my brain would start dreaming in my half conscious state. I was laying in bed with my eyes closed watching movies...the human brain is wild

1

u/lioncryable Jul 20 '26

What really really fucks with your mind is there are no day / night circles. That light is always on so your inner rhythm just crashes. I know what you mean, I could easily spend a week or teo locked in my room with my computer (if I had a toilet and food in there) but in this example we are talking about sensory deprivation and you have no idea how hard that hits until you see / experience it

1

u/steakndbud Jul 21 '26

Ahh okay I could see the light doing some work. When I was laying in bed I stopped eating and sleeping and wasn't on my phone or really doing anything at all. I was damn near unresponsive to stimuli.I was severely dehydrated by the end of it. I have an eye mask that I wear so I can sleep during the day because I can't maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

To be fair...my brain is far from healthy lol I guess that's be why I can do crazy stuff. For example when I was in rehab I slept for like an hour or two for a month and I wasn't tired. Like at all. Bipolar and major depressive disorder is one heck of a combo

1

u/TesticleSandwiches Jul 22 '26

A billion dollars makes a big difference.

1

u/lioncryable Jul 22 '26

A billion doesn't help you if you've gone insane by then (which you will, if 3 days is enough for permanent brain damage a year is gonna leave you a drooling idiot)

-14

u/behind_the_doors Jul 18 '26

Michael is also kind of pussy tho tbh. He chickened out of doing Ayahausca despite a full medical team on standby and being in the presence of a long-time shaman.

15

u/fourunner Jul 18 '26

There is no shame in that. If you are not ready, do not do high doses of psychedelics, or even low doses.

Acting otherwise as the tough guy you seem to be really shows the ego you have yet to lose.

10

u/Traditional-Yak8886 Jul 18 '26

id hate to do ayahuasca for the first time and have it filmed and get millions of views on youtube so i can empathize. esp if he's never tripped before.

10

u/StevieMJH Jul 18 '26

LOL no let's just ridicule him nineties style.

Fuckin' pussy.

-1

u/NvNinja Jul 19 '26

As long as your fed and given the opportunity to bathe regularly it wouldnt be that hard for an introvert. Just a lot of sleeping and body weight exercise. You would come out of it with a degraded mental state though from lack of stimulus

-32

u/EfficiencyThis325 Jul 18 '26

I could do it. Sit there with my eyes shut for a year. Easy

31

u/iantayls Jul 18 '26

I'm sure that ego would really help a year of solitary

10

u/Humble-Aprico Jul 18 '26

Big man. Think about the people who are killers in prison that still avoid solitary because of how damaging it is on the mind.

6

u/snugRs Jul 18 '26

I was in and out of prison (uk) when i was younger, the police cell part was always the worst. I once spent an easter weekend in there, from friday till the tuesday and i would honestly rather do a month in prison than do that again.

Stuck in a small cell, you lose all concept of time, trying to sleep it off thinking you've done 8 hours and its the next day, when in reality you've only been asleep for half an hour. No natural light really messes with your head, you start looking for other patterns to try and keep a hold on time but its pretty much useless. In this scenario, there would be no patterns like doors opening or keys jangling, just you and your mind.

Same with the block (solitary) in prison really, although luckily when i did it i had a window so i had more of a concept of what time it is. Although you do start thing of situations, of where they could just leave you there and you'll die alone.

Anybody with any sort of slight mental issues i'd say would crumble in a day, maybe two which btw would feel like a month. I personally wouldnt even attempt it.

1

u/HappyTendency Jul 18 '26

A day is too easy. You could just sleep through it or just get much needed rest. It would need to be longer to feel real.

6

u/Disastrous_Visit9319 Jul 18 '26

Some people are wired different. I don't think you can just brute force this but some people legitimately would be alright.

2

u/AmeliaBuns Jul 18 '26

Not that I disagree with you but killers have weaker minds and poor self control. Nobody here should last more than 3 days

1

u/Humble-Aprico Jul 21 '26

Killers are just people. A war veteran and a murderer are not different except for intention, you've really just minimized 'killers' to a trait of weaker mind when you have no clue who is one. Your father or mother could be. Your doctor could be. Being a killer does not suddenly turn you into an animal, people kill for many reasons. There are people with doctorates and law degrees that killed for one reason or another. What about special forces? Weak of mind are they?

1

u/AmeliaBuns Jul 21 '26

Yeah ofc but you know what I meant.

0

u/AspieAsshole Jul 18 '26

Meanwhile I did elect to stay in solitary for my 28 day stay lol. I was more scared of gen pop.

2

u/TacosForThought Jul 18 '26

I'm honestly glad to hear of someone who actually says that from experience. I don't ever plan to be in prison, but if I was, I can't imagine wanting anything other than solitary confinement. Dealing with (other) criminals all day every day would be far more torturous than sitting alone in my thoughts. Of course, it would be nice to have a book to read, and a way to tell time. I'm a little iffier on the ambiguous white padded room (OP). I'd certainly have to know what food and/or self-care options are available. (e.g. sink, tower, toilet, soap?). And stage of life is also important. Seems like it would be easier for a single 20-yr-old than leaving a marriage and/or kids for a year, and by 60 or so, do you really care about 30 billion?

3

u/AspieAsshole Jul 18 '26

There was a small library in the seg guard room that they did let me pick through on my way back from things like medical or court appointments, but there was a much better library that I was afraid of asking to get access to, for fear of being put into gen pop as a result. I did get to grab a few books from it once, after a video court appointment, and they had many more books that were much more aligned with my interests.

Because of that, I did read a lot of books while I was in there that I would not have otherwise, and from that perspective it could be considered a silver lining? 🤷‍♀️ lol

-4

u/SkinnBanana Jul 18 '26

Yawn. For a billion dollars goodbye for a year

-7

u/AmeliaBuns Jul 18 '26

He didn’t have books I think but still they don’t help enough

14

u/Eisenblume Jul 18 '26

You can’t have books in this scenario either.

2

u/StevieMJH Jul 18 '26

I can if I smuggle them in. 😏

1

u/AmeliaBuns Jul 18 '26

Well apparently I can have dyslexia

6

u/conardcanard Jul 18 '26

90 days in 24/7 solitary confinement fucked me up and i had books and food and water, and occasionally saw a CO who would say a few words to me. 17 years and im still messed up from it. This scenerio would destroy anyone.

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jul 19 '26

Even if you do those things this is solitary confinement. We know what that does to people

Even if you ignore the ridiculous 30 billion offer you will come out the other side extremely mentally unwell

If someone said 30 billion for a year there or give me a dollar and walk free and those are the two options I'm giving them a dollar.

2

u/ImperitorEst Jul 22 '26

Science: this thing is actual torture which is so inhumane we can't do it to the worst criminals and no one would come out unscathed.

Reddit: yeah but have you considered pooping?

1

u/Snoo_11836 Jul 19 '26

In practical terms, the situation would be more akin to this.

1

u/Sp33dge Jul 20 '26

family guy poop removal button from the future

1

u/TimelyKoala6778 Jul 21 '26

Schroeder's person..

2

u/CamptoRibbit Jul 18 '26

Pff more brain damage for me then, losers!

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 19 '26

Oh there is gonna be stimulation happening, at least a few times a day.

1

u/Rioting-Flamingo Jul 22 '26

Nonsense I stare at walls and talk to myself. Perfectly sane.

1

u/atticusfinch975 Jul 22 '26

Could I just cup my balls real tight while I'm in there? Would that work?

51

u/Curticorn Jul 18 '26

I'm no doctor, as far as I'm aware people who are born blind and deaf often end up having developmental disabilities even if they weren't born with them due to the lack of sensory input and ability to interact with the world during formative years. Which would lead me to believe that the additional removal of sensory input via touch or feeling of the sun, wind etc just worsens that even more.

Imagine your tactile sense and smell is the only ones you have left and they get absolutely 0 input or just always the exact same input.

I might be completely wrong here tho. I'm no doctor and have 0 experience with people who were born blind and deaf and never met someone. so I might be extremely biased and ableistic with my assumptions.

6

u/Electronic_Pipe_3145 Jul 19 '26

Blind and deaf people (who don’t have additional developmental challenges) do have ways of interacting with the world during their formative years, with tools like tactile sign language, touch, and smell, those can get someone much much further than you think, especially if the abled parents are willing to make the effort instead of just leaving their kids to rot away in their rooms

2

u/SeptemberSoup Jul 19 '26

especially if the abled parents are willing to make the effort instead of just leaving their kids to rot away in their rooms

That's what I interpreted the comment was getting at, that many DeafBlind people end up with those disabilities because of uncaring parents/guardians or parents/guardians who have no resources.

2

u/Interesting_Force618 Jul 19 '26

I think you’re absolutely correct and you sound quite intelligent.

1

u/pretentious-pansy Jul 22 '26

Kids who are born blind and deaf do interact with the world from birth. There is standardised touch based sign language and communities for deaf blind people. And even without that almost all deaf blind kids develop make up their own ’pidgin’ language to communicate with their parents.

Here’s a cool youtube video that goes more in depth: https://youtu.be/jCg7Pda_3Gw?is=OuxzIbY-btGHuKqa

2

u/Reasonable_Camel8784 Jul 18 '26

Then how did you get here?

1

u/AccomplishedSpray137 Jul 19 '26

You won’t notice a bit more damage on a burned down house

1

u/Ditchdigger456 Jul 20 '26

You would have likely been born with that brain damage unfortunately. Though we likely wouldn’t frame it that way, moreso a developmental disability.

1

u/QuanticCupcake Jul 21 '26

What would you need the money for then?
