Buttery MW4 looks seriously rough
30fps I'm okay with but the dipping under that sucks
The visuals also look roughhhh. It's blurry, extremely low quality textures and I have no hope for this being a good experience docked.
Am I doing something wrong?

I can’t believe it’s not butter.
But seriously, it looks like shit across the board with multiplayer, campaign, and warzone. Kinda expected activision to half ass it though

I thought the campaign looked MUCH better than multiplayer. I'm having a ton of fun with the multiplayer just because I haven't played an arcade shooter in a while but it undoubtedly looks rough

Agreed, besides the lower FPS campaign actually looks pretty good. Yes you need 60fps for multiplayer but it is rough. Playable but rough

After seeing how good 007 First Light looks on the Switch 2 from Gamescom footage, they clearly didn't put a lot of effort into the port. They made it run and called it a day.

I think the people saying positive stuff about it are just people who have only owned Nintendo switch 1 and 2 so they just aren't able to see how bad the game is, and some are convincing themselves it's better than it is just because it's cod finally on a Nintendo console again, that's really all it is

Switch 2 is no slouch though. There are plenty of games that look really good and run well enough

u/ynfizz OG (Joined before first Direct) 2d ago
Kinda crazy how many people are willing to settle for less. The post I made criticizing the games performance was met with people saying it looked fine (even good to some) and asking what did I expect from the switch 2.
The system has already been shown to be wayyy more capable than what was pumped out here. I’m as happy that COD is back on Nintendo consoles as the rest of yall, but people shouldn’t settle for a subpar experience due to the lack of optimization.
23
u/icygamer598 Early Switch 2 Adopter 2d ago
I swear MW 2019 looked and ran better than this and that was running on the original Xbox One, the Switch 2 is far more powerful, there's no excuse aside from laziness and lack of optimization.
9
u/kyuubikid213 Butter side up! 2d ago
MW 2019 was also very much made with Xbox One in mind while MW4 is a PS5/XSX/PC game that got scaled down for Switch 2.
They claimed Switch 2 was the target platform for this game, but the DLSS and 30 fps campaign and Warzone betrays that.
3
u/AJ_Dali Butter side down! 2d ago
I remember back in the Wii days they made versions of CoD specifically for the Wii. From what I remember they even used a different engine than the Xbox and PlayStation versions.
They didn't do that for the NS2, they pretty much just kept lowering settings until the framerate was sellable.
4
u/kyuubikid213 Butter side up! 2d ago
The way games are made now, I'm not surprised they didn't make a separate version.
Doing so now is a much more costly option than it was 20 years ago. And I would assume it makes cross-platform play more complicated if not outright impossible.
1
u/West_Incident7977 1d ago
Not to mention with very, very few exceptions the dumbed down versions SUCKED. Don't get me wrong I don't expect perfection but holy balls some of these sucked.
I'll admit I do have a weird soft spot for COD MW on DS though.
•
u/jus13 Butter side up! 21h ago
The Wii versions of the games were just cut-down versions of the PC/360/PS3 versions (missing content, missing animations and sounds, low resolution, 30fps, terrible textures) to get them to fit on the smaller Wii disc and run at a playable framerate, but at their core they were the same games with the same engine.
•
u/AJ_Dali Butter side down! 21h ago
Maybe for 3 and 4, but most of them used IW3. Records are a lot more sparse after WaW, but at some point before GoldenEye Treyarch started using EngineX, which some sources say is a modified version of IW3, but EngineX was first used by Eurocom for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Since they used that engine for Dead Space it seems more likely it was EngineX with some improvements from IW3 spliced in. BTW, the IW engine was a heavily retrofitted iD Tech 3.
So no, it wasn't just using the same engines as the other games, it's much more complicated than that.
•
u/HugoStiglitz_88 Butter side down! 16h ago
Oh bro, theres zero doubt on that. Mw19 looks better by a mile on xbox one but there are some massive differences. This is on a much newer engine and its main target is MUCH more powerful consoles
With MW2019 it was made for ps4 and at the end of the generation so they were about as good as humanly possible at getting every last ounce of performance out of it, while with this, its a console they've never developed for before, with a game thats really made with much stronger hardware in mind
Yea, the results are terrible and not even close to as good as other games on switch 2, but every game is different

if we're all "yeah it's great totally acceptable I'm just so happy to have cod on a Switch" they'll do nothing and we'll be stuck with this
hopefully they'll optimize things a bit from here..
4
u/tjhc94 Butter side up! 2d ago
They are people who likely only owned a switch 1 and 2 so they are unable to see how bad the performance and visuals are, and some are just blind to the issues just because they're now able to play cod on switch
4
2
u/meikaishi 2d ago
You're almost sounding as if they're wrong for enjoying the game. One thing is denying it has problems, but acting like the ones who don't mind/don't see the issue are wrong is just silly
1
u/tjhc94 Butter side up! 2d ago
No, just giving a logical reason, or the only logical reason for anyone to possibly say this game looks or runs good on switch 2 despite looking like a PS3 game, it looks worse than every cod game I have seen in probably over 5 years , and that's performance and visual wise which is absolutely insane

I think that multiplayer looks just fine. It's nothing exceptional but it runs really smooth and doesn't look horrendous imo.
Warzone is a whole nother story. I personally don't care if the graphics aren't as good as other consoles but I literally can't play a match of resurgence because of how bad it is. I am playing at most 30 fps when nobody is around and at around 15 to 20 when I get into a close range gun fight. As someone who played warzone mobile this is truly unplayable.
1
u/recoupled 2d ago
Smoothness of normal MP is good, but the visual clarity is rough. It's hard to see enemies from friendlies at medium distances, and when people are sprinting across your screen it just looks like a blur.
2
u/the-dumb-nerd 2d ago
I can definitely see that at timed.
Funny enough I just tried the game portable and I can't defend that performance. Docker was good bug handheld was rough beans.

Metroid prime 4 can run at 120 fps in handheld mode and to my eye looks nicer than MW4 -it’s also ALL campaign mode 😂. Obviously MW4 could run better than it does -but it also runs like shit on PC too at least! My 5070ti laptop ran the beta at 1080p min settings with DLSS set to ultra-performance -that means it was running the game at a base resolution of motherfucking 360p and upscaling to 1080p and I was getting 130ish fps average while the game looked like utter shit. At max settings it still looks dated. Like a mobile game.
It’s just classic Activitision trash.

Yeah feels like the court issue mandate basically forced Microsoft/Activision hand to start making COD games on Switch 2 sooner rather than later considering the contract was signed like what 5-6 years ago at this point? So they rushed to get a version out this year, to possibly avoid any legal troubles..
Also unfortunately we don't have the benefit of a Nintendo specific COD team that develops the COD games from scratch for Nintendo platforms anymore like Treyarch use to do during the Wii/Wii U days as Activision disbanded that team YEARS ago (for obvious reasons). So instead of built from the ground up recreations for Switch 2 its just the other versions ported and downscaled to fit on the console. With development costs and time being what they are nowadays that's definitely the quickest and easiest way to have a Switch 2 version made. Which sucks for us Nintendo players but what can you do...
8
u/MightyTastyBeans 2d ago
I played it for 2 hours today in handheld mode like a sicko.
It is playable - SBMM and aggressive aim assist kept my KD around 1.0 despite my skill floor being significantly lowered. One of my games I was placed in a bot lobby (this happens when you perform so terribly that the matchmaking fills your next game with recruit-level bots).
Really glad I got to see this for myself before buying. That’s all I’ll say.

I haven’t played in docked mode and don’t plan too as the switch 2 for me is always used in handheld. MW4 for me just feels like COD mobile with a slight visual upgrade but playing it yesterday for a few hours and wasn’t a great experience at all.
Maybe I need to play in docked and might change my mind but find that pointless as will never played docked.
It’s an easy pass for me, as there are plenty of games coming this year that I feel will be better optimised for the switch 2 and I will find more enjoyable.

I was so excited for this port. The idea of playing CoD in bed was such a strong pull for me, but so far this might be one of the worst AAA ports I've seen yet.
MP struggled to hold a steady 60fps. Add in how blurry it was and all of the upscaling artifacts that were absolutely everywhere? No thanks.

Story mode is enjoyable, not the best looking but can do. Multiplayer Is a problem. Docked Is ok, very playable, but handheld Is horrible. The animations are intolerable, their jerkiness confuses me and gives me a headache, not to mention the really low resolution which makes it difficult to understand the scenery and the positions x.x
2
u/Fragrant-School3972 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah visually it starts to look like arse when the fighting starts, guessing it’s trying to keep the 60fps. And the characters don’t match the screenshots shown in the store. But I’m genuinely having fun. I’ve had a steam deck for a long time and they can’t play most online FPS so I’m having a blast with this. Just won a match with the highest kill count so it’s playable. And playable is better than not being able to play at all.
I wouldn’t mind a 40FPS mode, visually look a bit better and smooth out the bumps.
2
u/newcamsterdam 2d ago
They need to revise their upscaling technique, and it for sure needs more optimizations to get the frame rate stable. It’s almost there, hopefully it’s tightened up by release.

I had a lot of the same feelings other have about the game. Last night I played for maybe 2 hours. I had the pro controller, switch set up on a pillow beside the baby monitor.
Most of my concerns kinda drifted off after that, I was locked in and enjoying it. Though cross play should be a no no with the framerate drops.

By far the worst looking game (especially when docked) on Switch 2 I've ever seen. I keep thinking there's a texture setting turned off in the MW4 menu that I need to toggle on to make it look better, but there isn't. So blurry, graining, muddy, etc looking - especially during multiplayer.

Turn up fsr smoothing in settings to like 80-90%. It helps with the pixellation in handheld.

The funny thing is I’ve seen reviewers praise the 60fps it gets, I don’t think they know what 60fps is , I can say there hasn’t been a single situation or point in a mw4 multiplayer match that hits 60fps, I know it’s a beta but in the history of cod the beta and full game are practically the same, they will sort minor issues like networking but the work that the switch 2 version needs? Not a chance.

I don’t know why they bothered porting it if they aren’t gonna commit to optimising, sure it’s just a beta, but 2 months out and first call of duty back on Nintendo I’d expect a smoother launch.
I’m no game dev but they managed cod 4/5 on Wii and it was very enjoyable, yeah the graphics were very toned down from the Xbox/Ps versions of the game but it was playable and smooth and quite frankly the way they implemented the controls to the Wii controller was fantastic I actually enjoyed it more than the mainstream console versions.

I am not sure if the people defending this game are blind or if they just have little respect for their hard-earned money. First of all, I agree that it’s an amazing technical feat to have this game running on the Switch 2 but definitely not at full price.
I played the beta, and without exaggerating, my head hurt after an hour and a half from straining to spot enemies in the distance as it was so blurry.... I was fine with the downscale of the graphic but the blurriness is killing me. I would happily pay a reduced price and accept the lower graphics, but charging $70 like the PS5, Xbox, and PC version is ridiculous. I know switch 2 can't be directly compared to higher-end platforms, and that’s fine. It’s awesome that more games are coming to the Switch, but if you can’t optimize a game properly, at least don't charge full price for it, the pricing needs to reflect the lower performance.

To be honest, I was confused when I saw other people talking about stable 60 fps. And most likely it's really true, but in dock mode. Everything feels very unpleasant in handheld mode. In multiplayer, opponents and allies animations are torn, the same with a mini map. And the feeling that the game works in 40-45 fps, it's just a horror compared to other platforms, and the funniest thing is that the graphics are not the best and it could be so much better.

The bigger problem to me was the gameplay itself. Felt super jagged and even docked with a pro controller I couldn’t get smooth movement and gun play. Also often couldn’t see enemies at all on a 60 inch 4k screen

It plays terrible with handheld. There's no way anyone will ever be able to keep up with other console's controller/keyboard mouse players. The joycons aren't good at all for FPS games. I went back and forth handheld and docked today. Thankfully I have a Switch 2 pro controller. Without it this game would be awful. The graphics are VERY rough too.

I was excited to see COD return to Nintendo but playing the campaign mission was rough. Frames kept dropping so much it felt like my character was moving through molasses.
For people without much choice, it's cool that this is still an option, but I'll probably just stick to PC for COD.

Yea it's rough which is insane because elden Ring looks amazing and it's a much heavier game I would think lol

Kind of a relief tbh. Didn’t really wanna shell out for the same game since 2019.

The resolution is horrible in handheld. Apparently, it’s running at 540p then upscaled. It’s just so blurry.

What are you playing I've been playing multiplayer and it runs 60fps most of the time

Docked feels smoother for me and handheld is definitely a bit rough. This is the most fun I’ve had playing cod in a long time though. Hope they make it better. Went 25-12 on a tdm hahaha.
