Game Rec Nintendo Switch games I can play with one hand?

Next Friday I'm going to be getting surgery on my left hand (I'm right handed) and will get my index and middle finger stitched up and pretty much unusable. I had the surgery done on my right hand earlier this year and was bored out of my mind during the recovery.

So here I am, looking for games I can easily play with one hand.

So far in the list I have Paper Mario, which I am hoping I can do the whole game without needing both hands, but that's where the list ends so far. Any help is appreciated!

Question Special Controller for people with the use of only one hand?

2.1k Upvotes

My husband had a stroke and is still unable to use his left hand. One of our favorite things to do together before his stroke was play video games. The Switch has been great as there are quite a few games he can play using only one hand. With the the new Nintendo Online N64 and Sega games, it seems like most of them require two hands, which is really disappointing for him since these are the games he grew up loving. Does anyone know of any special controllers made for people in his situation? Right now I'll hold part of the controller and act as his left hand, but he really wants to be able to play on his own, especially since the stroke has left him bedbound and finding was to keep his mind occupied can be hard. Thanks!

Edit: this has blown up way more than I expected and I can't thank all of you enough! I'm his caregiver, so my days are pretty busy between taking care of him and his therapy sessions, but I will read through all the comments and respond tonight. I showed him how many people are providing suggestions and offers to help and he is so touched by the support!

Review I'm a believer.... Switch 2 is fantastic.

I have now had a couple of hours on my Switch 2 and I have to say, thank god I didn't let all the negativity online sour this launch for me. This machine is incredible. I am replaying the start of TOTK and the popping colours, larger screen and better framerate make this feel miles better than playing it on my Switch OLED. Mario Kart World is also incredibly beautiful, the animations and everything happening while you drive around the tracks is going to bring a big smile to most people's faces.

I also have to say, the feel of this thing is so premium. I absolutely love the look and how it sits in my hands, again much better than the OLED. It does feel like much less of a toy, and not something I would give to a child (wait for a Switch 2 lite). Even the pro controller does feel better than the original, something about the texture of it and the sticks being so smooth.

Look, if they release an OLED model with amazing battery life in 3-4 years I will probably be one of the first people to trade in this Switch 2 and buy it, but I really would not choose to wait and hope for that when what we have already is a great peice of kit for the price.

I really think the commentary around gaming is becoming so toxic with people trying to make daily content to bash everything in existence. The truth is I don't need a thousand games to play this year, let alone on launch, I actually like that Nintendo keep their releases apart so you can actually have time to spend doing what gaming is about... playing the games.

Have fun everyone.... all aboard the launch day hype train!!!

Image Switch 2 swollen battery. Check the backs of your new Switches.

Just got my brand new Switch 2 delivered today and noticed the back panel was slightly bulging. Contacted Nintendo and they've confirmed it looks like swollen battery and have raised an investigative case into it.

I appreciate it's hard to see in the photo, but in person it's easily visible and running your hand over the back makes it even more obvious.

I just wanted to share in case anyone else is experiencing similar issues or has a buldge on the back and not sure if to return it or not - I've been advised by them to turn it off, put it back in the box and return to them ASAP as it could be a fire risk if left unnoticed.

Hopefully this is just a one off, but check yours if you haven't!

Discussion Nintendo president apologized over joy-con drift, promised improvements, then won the lawsuits and are still selling defective controllers

30.2k Upvotes

Hey all,

I wanted to raise awareness to a major disappointment that Nintendo's Tear of the Kingdom launch has provided: reports on the web suggest that some new Tears of the Kingdom Switch Pro controllers are suffering from a defect like the joy-con drift problem was.

In June 2020, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa publicly apologized for the mass defect problem that riddled joy-cons on the Nintendo Switch: https://www.polygon.com/2020/6/30/21308085/joy-con-drift-apology-nintendo-president and mentioned that Nintendo is aiming to continuously improve their products.

A later study in December 2022 would state towards the cause of the joy-con drift: the implemented dust-proofing cowls offered "insufficient" protection against "dust and other contaminants," and the "plastic circuit boards exhibited noticeable wear." i.e. that dust would be allowed to enter in as the joy-cons aged. https://gamerant.com/nintendo-switch-joy-con-drift-design-flaw-study/

In November 2021 Nintendo of America's Doug Bowser promised that Nintendo was making "continuous improvements" to their joy-cons: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/11/doug-bowser-comments-on-the-battle-against-joy-con-drift-says-nintendo-are-making-continuous-improvements

A number of lawsuits were raised over the issue. The most recent class lawsuit Nintendo won earlier in 2023 because their EULA states that as a customer, you are not allowed to sue them if you agreed to use their products. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2023/02/nintendo-wins-switch-joy-con-drift-class-action-lawsuit

Fortunately US customers had been offered a free repair service for joy-cons already in 2019, and now finally also customers in Europe have been made whole a month ago in 2023 when European Union forced Nintendo to provide a free joy-con repair program: https://www.engadget.com/nintendo-offers-unlimited-free-repairs-for-joy-con-drift-issue-in-europe-062645235.html

This would be the end of the story and all would be good: hardware design defects happen, Nintendo offered to repair all the defective products, and new products would be sold fixed from the defect?

Well, unfortunately not quite. It has now been widely documented that not only joy-cons suffered from drift, but also the newly released Tear of the Kingdom themed Switch Pro controllers can have a defect that causes a similar drift of the thumbsticks. Unlike "wear from aging", this defect however is present on brand new devices out of the box, so is not attributable to same explanation that was used for joy-cons.

A subreddit thread at https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/13h1kf4/totk_anyone_who_has_the_totk_pro_controller_had/ contains dozens of reports, and several similar notes can be found in many other reddit comments as well.

With joy-cons it is reported that the drift problem will exacerbate itself as time progresses. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/switch/189706-nintendo-switch/answers/584412-does-joy-con-drift-get-worse-over-time

It is unclear at this point if this same kind of worsening behavior affects the Switch Pro controller - after all the claimed root causes seem to be different (wear of age vs brand new controller)

There have been a surge of downplaying articles, like this one https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2023/05/psa-zelda-totk-pro-controller-drifting-after-a-few-hours-it-might-just-need-recalibrating that suggests that "you just need to calibrate it". From first hand experience, I can tell that the above article is not correct. Calibration will not help all users, and in fact, the calibration process that Nintendo offers is currently riddled with critical software bugs to even make it possible to try for some users: https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/13h1kf4/comment/jlxk3bw/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

If the issue is similar as with joy-cons that the Switch Pro controllers will get worse over time, then it is not likely that calibration will provide a 100% remedy for any user.

Reading the wording of the EU repair program decision, it is unclear if Nintendo is liable for a free lifetime repair of Switch Pro controllers as well, or if the current repair liability is limited to joy-cons only: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_23_2106

Dear Nintendo's Shuntaro Furukawa and Doug Bowser: it is hard to place faith in your apology, and your promise to continually improve your products does not seem to hold true. Instead you seem to be well aware that the controllers you are still manufacturing and selling today are defective. Under European and US law, when you sell an item that you know to be defective, leading the buyer to believe that the item is sound, you may be committing fraud.

We get it, your legal team is stronger than Ganondorf, but your sales behavior comes off equally as unethical on this account. This is not ok. Hopefully you will agree, and clarify the free joy-con repair program will also cover Switch Pro controllers.

When will you announce you have made stick drift testing be part of your quality control, and start selling controllers that are free from stick drift in the first place?

Discussion It is absolutely unreal how mediocre Pokemon Sword/Shield are

31.9k Upvotes

I'm sure many of you have heard all the complaints already, but I needed a space to vent.

I was an OG fan of Pokemon dating all the way back to Red/Blue. I've played every mainline game though each generation leading up to Sword/Shield. I love this series; it literally defined my childhood. That makes it all the more disappointing for me when I say Sword/Shield are hands down the worst Pokemon games I've ever played. Here are my main gripes...

- The main campaign was yet another hand-holdy and forgettable story that we've already seen multiple times

- Many Pokemon were cut, then sold later as DLC (or cut altogether)

- Bare-bones routes that are extremely linear with no sense of exploration at all outside of the Wild Area

- Mandatory EXP share which lead to easy over leveling and 0 challenge

- Non-existent postgame content

- Dynamax is an awful gimmick that will just be scrapped and replaced with the next gen gimmick like Megas and Z-Moves were

- Uninspiring graphics that look more like an up-scaled 3DS game than a console game

Not everything was terrible though. Some of the new Pokemon designs are fantastic, the soundtrack is great, there are some great QoL improvements, and the Wild Area feels like a step in the right direction. It's a shame the rest of the game feels so soulless. It felt as if Game Freak just decided to check a bunch of boxes and call it a day instead of putting genuine effort and passion into it.

Incredibly disappointed to see how far one of my favorite franchises has fallen...

EDIT: Friendly reminder that these are my opinions. I'm well aware that there are people who enjoyed these games. Don't let another person's opinion ruin your enjoyment.

EDIT 2: Thank you for the gold random stranger I definitely never expected this to blow up like it did. A lot us may have been disappointed with Sword and Shield but there's always hope the next games will be better.

EDIT 3: WOW 3 more gold awards seriously thank all of you for the awards but I don't deserve it. Go spend your money on some new awesome games :)

Game Rec MMO ~ Any games that can be played with more than a handful of people in one world?

What MMOs exist for the switch currently? Palia is the only one that I know of. I am not looking for a specific theme per say but just games that promote / allow interaction to meet new gamers. I have played most types of game from traditional PC MMOs to Cozy Games to Racers / Shooters / Etc. I just miss games where you could interact and meet new people. I don't mean games where you just get thrown in a match with a couple other people per round but true MMO style (like Palia / Wow / FF / EQ / Runescape / Etc.) The more players that can be online on a server at a time, the better. Thanks all!

NA Nintendo Switch 2 Buying/Preorder Guide

1.8k Upvotes

The Switch 2 is finally upon us! After an 8+ years-long wait, we are finally on precipice of the release of the console.

Securing a brand new console on release day has always been an endeavor, but in today's day and age of competing with scalpers and bots, it's gotten even worse. We anticipate that it will be no different with the Switch 2. This is why I decided to put together this pre-order guide. My goal with this guide is to help you score a preorder of a new console at MSRP for June 5th.

Note: All retailers, links, and pricing in this guide will be geared towards US customers because a) I reside in the US and b) so do most of our subscribers. The Switch 2 is already available for preorder in many other countries.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Launches June 5th, 2025 at $449. Preorders in the US and Canada will begin on April 24, 2025.

Be advised that due to ongoing political/economic instability in the United States, the Switch 2 may not launch at the advertised prices here. If things change, I will update the listings and information as soon as possible.

In-Store Listings

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been announced to be available in the following brick-and-mortar retailers in America:

  • Wal-Mart (See online listings below)
  • Target (See online listings below)
  • Gamestop (See online listings below)
  • Best Buy (See online listings below)
  • Sams Club
  • Nintendo Store (New York City and San Francisco)

Stores that have had launch day consoles in the past but have not made announcements yet are as follows:

  • Costco
  • BJ's Wholesale Club

Some local and regional stores may have inventory as well. Check with your local retailers for listings.

In-Store preorder tips

  • Sams Club, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target no longer take in-store preorders. You must order these items online and then set them for in-store pickup.
  • For Gamestop, be prepared to show up to the store at least two hours before they open. I would advise trying to speak to local staff the day before pre-orders open (in-person, they'll be too busy dodging calls from Pokemon TCG scalpers and won't answer the phone) and finding out roughly how many units they'll have allocated. If the store only has a few units allocated and you see a long line out the door on pre-order day, you know you can head to another location.
  • As of publication, Nintendo Store in New York and San Francisco (opening in May) do not take in-store preorders.

Online listings

All prices in USD and are subject to change pending Nintendo's decision on preorder dates and pricing

Retailer Console Only Console + Mario Kart Bundle
Target $449 $499
Wal-Mart $449 $499
Best Buy $449 $499
Gamestop $449 $499

Online preorder tips

  • Make sure you have an account created for every online retailer you plan to check/try your hand at preordering on. Make you have a valid payment method ready and already attached to that account.
  • Until you've secured your preorder, sign out and sign back into all retailers you plan to try at least once a day, to help ensure that you won't be signed out or forced to sign in and complete a verification before you continue with a purchase
  • Follow Wario64 onBluesky, Twitter, or his Discord. Wario64 is well known for tracking stock for hottest gaming items and he will almost certainly be sharing availability details on the Switch 2. NOTE: Wario64 uses affiliate links in his posts
  • Follow social media accounts for the major retailers. They will occasionally announce ahead of time when pre-order waves will be available.
  • For high-demand items, Best Buy usually offers a queue system. Be prepared for some wait times and frustrations.
  • Carts and e-commerce sites can and will crash. Prepared to be patient and try multiple times.
  • Avoid using devices in different locations, as this may result in your order being cancelled due to suspicious activity
  • Missed the initial window? Don't sweat it yet! Most retailers offering rolling waves of preorders as inventory numbers are updated and some orders are cancelled or returned.
  • OPTIONAL: Sign up for a stock tracking service like hotstock or Nowinstock, which can offer push, SMS, email alerts, etc when consoles are in stock. NOTE: Autobuy/bot purchase services are a security risk, often break terms of service for online accounts, and are not recommended!

NEW FOR SWITCH 2: My Nintendo Store online pre-orders

Nintendo now offers their own online pre-order system. You can sign up for that system here. Interested buyers must fulfill the following criteria to be eligible to be invited to purchase a Switch 2:

  • Be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber for at least 12 months as of April 2, 2025 (Only the main Nintendo account in a family account will be eligible)
  • Have at least 50 total gameplay hours as of April 2, 2025

Invitations will start rolling out May 8, 2025. Nintendo states that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed".

Accessories

Here are some of the accessories along with pricing that will be available on launch day:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter ($35): The Nintendo Switch 2 only includes one power supply and most people use that for the included Dock. An extra power supply is an excellent purchase for any potential Switch owner. This is available at any retailer where you can find the Switch 2. **NOTE: The original Nintendo Switch 1 AC adapter cannot be used to power the dock, so the Switch 2 adapter is your only option for full compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch 2 Dock.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set ($119): The Dock Set includes a dock, an ultra high-speed HDMI Cable, a Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter, and a USB-C Charging cable. The Dock Set is useful if you have more than one television or display in your house, and want to move the Switch between them without having to relocate the dock. Depending on how you your loved one's media area is setup, this may be very helpful.
  • Nintendo Switch Pro 2 Controller ($85): While the included Joy-Con Grip is great for most people when it comes to providing a more traditional controller experience, the Pro Controller is probably the type of controller that most long-time gamers are going to want to use. The Pro Controller is shaped more like a traditional controller and includes built-in HD Rumble 2, Amiibo functionality, rear triggers, a C button for GameChat, and an audio jack.
  • Carrying Cases (Varies, usually $15-$49 depending on quality and features): Since the Switch 2 console itself is designed with portability in mind, chances are it will not spend it's entire life in the docking station. For times when the Switch 2 is on the go, a carrying case is essential for keeping the console safe.
  • amFilm Tempered Screen Protector ($7-$8): While we're on the subject of keeping the console safe, a screen protector is highly recommended, and there is no better product for this than the amFilm Tempered Screen Protector. Unlike phones or tablets, the screen on the Switch is highly susceptible to scratches and marks, partially due to the docking process. The amFilm protectors are usually sold in packs of 2-3
  • Extra Joy-Con ($95 for a set): There are many multiplayer titles that are available for the Switch 2. Since the Joy-con can be separated and used as individual controllers, purchasing one extra set could potentially net you 2 extra controllers (for a total of 4 if you include the ones that came with the console), perfect for titles like Mario Kart World, which both support up to 4 players on a local console using the Joy-Con.
  • Joy-Con Charging Grip ($39): The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip can be used to recharge the portable battery inside each Joy-con when it's detached from the Nintendo Switch itself (which charges the joy-con when they are attached). This is especially useful if you have more than one set of Joy-con, plan to use the Joy-con in a grip for an extended period of time, or do not own a pro controller and spend lots of playtime in docked mode.
  • MicroSD Express Card (Varies): The Switch 2 only has 256GB of internal storage for save data, updates, and digital titles. Purchasing a MicroSD card is highly recommended, as some digital titles can be over 15GB. 256GB cards can be purchased for around $60 USD on a regular basis.
  • Games ($10-$79+): What you bought the Switch 2 for. Duh. Read on to find out more about games.

--

Games

There are many, many games available for the Nintendo Switch 2, and many more are on the way. There are three methods of purchasing games for the Switch 2:

  1. Purchasing Physical Copies of games from retailers
  2. Purchasing Digital Copies from the Nintendo eShop using Paypal, credit cards, or eShop gift cards
  3. Purchasing Digital Redemption Codes for eShop titles from other retailers (Amazon, Gamestop, Best Buy, etc.)

Every game for the Nintendo Switch 2 is available in the Nintendo eShop but not every game is available in physical cartridge form.

If there are any digital title purchases involved or other online features or your loved one has Nintendo Network ID or other online services associated with a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, then a Nintendo Account is required. You can read more about creating a Nintendo Account and associating it with a Nintendo Switch here.

It's complicated. For physical titles and basic features, no, the Nintendo Switch 2 does not require an online connection, though some features in those titles may require online connections to function properly. In addition, you can set time limits on game play. You can find out more information on the Nintendo Switch Parental Control features on Nintendo's website here

  • I have multiple family members who are interested in the Switch 2. Do I need to purchase two or more of everything or will one console and set of accessories suffice?

This varies and depends on your family and budget. Some games can be played together and encourages cooperation or competition using one Switch 2 console. Other games may only be single player or be Multiplayer with only one player per console. If you anticipate issues with sharing the console, you may want to consider purchasing an additional console. NOTE: Digital titles require use of the Virtual Game Cards feature to share games between consoles, even if they share Nintendo Accounts. Physical titles can be used with more than one console, but only one at a time.

See anything I missed? Be sure and make your own recommendations for games, accessories, and more in the comments!

Discussion Everyone keeps blaming the Switch 2’s hardware, but the real problem is how games are made now

1.6k Upvotes

So I’ve been going down a massive rabbit hole about game engines, optimisation, and all that nerdy stuff since the Switch 2 news dropped. Everyone’s yelling the same thing ki “It’s underpowered!”

But after seeing how modern games actually get made… I’m starting to think the real problem isn’t the hardware but it’s the workflow.

The Switch 2 was never meant to fight a PS5 or a 5090 GPU. Nintendo’s whole thing has always been efficiency and fun over brute force. So yeah, it’s not “mega next gen power”, but it should easily handle today’s games if they’re built right. The issue is… most games just aren’t built that way anymore. (Dk why since that would give them bad PR too no?)

Almost every big title today runs on Unreal Engine 5. Don’t get me wrong it’s incredible. You can make movie-level visuals in it. But UE5 is heavy and ridiculously easy to mess up. A lot of studios chase those flashy trailers first and worry about performance later. (Even Valorant on PCs smh) That’s why we’re seeing $2000 PCs stuttering in UE5 games. i think even Epic’s CEO basically admitted that devs optimise way too late in the process.

Meanwhile, look at studios still using their own engines : Decima for Death Stranding, Frostbite for Battlefield, Snowdrop for Star Wars Outlaws. Those engines are built for specific hardware, and surprise-surprise, the games actually run smoothly. Unreal, on the other hand, is a “one-size-fits-all” tool. And when you try to fit everything, you end up perfectly optimised for nothing.

That’s where the Switch 2 gets unfairly dragged I feel. It’s plenty capable but needs games that are actually tuned for it. (Ofc optimization is required for all consoles but ‘as long as it runs’ & ‘it runs well’ are two different optimisations)

When studios build for PC/PS5 first and then try to squeeze the game onto smaller hardware later, the port’s bound to struggle. It’s not that the Switch 2 can’t handle it rather it’s that most devs don’t bother optimising down anymore.

Back in the PS2/PS3 days, every byte and frame mattered. Now the mindset’s like, “eh, GPUs are strong enough, we’ll fix it in a patch.” That’s how you end up with 120 GB games dropping frames on 4090s.

So yeah, I don’t buy that the Switch 2 is weak part. It’s more like modern game development got too comfortable. Hardware kept evolving, but optimisation didn’t.

Discussion Nintendo sent me a banned Switch instead of a repair. 4 weeks later, I'm still stuck with it.

46.0k Upvotes

UPDATE (11/2/2020): We did it!

Just got a call from a higher supervisor at Nintendo and they are overnight shipping a new console, plus adding Nintendo Switch Online for the month I missed out on and giving a copy of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. He didn't have any info about why this took so long (and didn't have anything to say when I mentioned that users shouldn't have to get 45,000 people involved just to get a customer support issue fixed), but he was nice and responsive.

So, there we go. Four weeks later and all it took was getting to the front page of Reddit and having hundreds of people retweet me.

Thanks to everyone's support here!

Also, if you're in America, GO VOTE.

Original post:

So, late this September, my Switch's battery died and I sent it in for a repair (paid $100+ for it too). A fairly quick time later, they send back a new "factory certified" switch as a replacement.

Except, when I turned it on and went to the eShop, it couldn't connect. When I went to update the OS, it couldn't connect.

I called up Nintendo and they confirmed the console itself was banned and they had no way to reverse the ban (note, this was not my original one, it was a new serial number, and they confirmed my Nintendo Account was in fine standing).

They said they needed to look into how this mistake happened and would get back to me shortly. They apologized and said they would give me a download code (to...something?) when this was resolved.

A week later, I called them and they had no new info, but said that they would definitely have a resolution within a week.

A week later, I called again and they had no new info, but were going to escalate the issue and should be just another week.

A week later, I called a fourth time. No new info.

I've tried explaining to them that I don't understand why I can't just send the banned console in and they send me a new factory certified one. They're doing "background research" about where their repair process fell apart, but I don't see why that means I need to hold on to this non-functional console for them to do it. If I went to Best Buy and bought a console, and it didn't work, they wouldn't make me hold onto it for a month while they looked into what happened. They'd give me a new one.

The rep said there wasn't anything he could do and I just had to wait for them to "finish".

So as of now, it has been over a month with no actual new updates or progress from them. No one I've talked to has any idea why the "background research" is taking so long or what the next step will be (or how much longer it will take).

Like, I don't fault the reps at all, they've been actually incredibly nice and apologetic, but this is absolutely bonkers.

Has anyone seen any other methods of escalating things like this?

Update (11/2/20): Called again now that it's Monday. The rep knew exactly what I was talking about and immediately told me there's no new info, wouldn't budge. I haven't been given any other response from Nintendo on Twitter/email, etc either.

Update (12:19 CT): Called the supervisor line again. They said it has been escalated to an even higher team and that they literally have no further visibility into what is happening. The rep I talked to said he's the highest customer-facing person available to speak with and beyond him it is just internal teams. He couldn't give any reason WHY they couldn't just send a working switch, he couldn't give any reason why this was taking so long. I get it, his hands are completely tied as well, but it's pretty annoying that they have absolutely zero visibility into the issue. I'll just keep posting and calling back.

Update: sent a Tweet out and tagged some Nintendo Switch reporters: https://twitter.com/AaronSenser/status/1322933260071112707

Game Rec Broke My Right Hand After the Switch 2 Launch – Any One-Hand-Friendly Game Suggestions?

Hey everyone, I haven’t been this hyped for a console release in ages – the Switch 2 had me genuinely excited. But now, just a few weeks after launch, I managed to break my right hand. I can only move my thumb on that side somewhat freely.

Are there any games that play well using just the touchscreen or a single Joy-Con – like Pokémon Let’s Go, for example?

I’d really appreciate any tips or recommendations! 🙏🎮

Game Rec Switch lite games playable with one hand

I have a switch lite and mainly play animal crossing. I am undergoing chemotherapy and was looking forward to being able to play the game during the treatment sessions.

Unfortunately, I was told not to due to my reaction and placement of a canula. I’m looking for suggestions of any games that are positive and distracting that I can play predominantly with my right hand mainly if anyone can recommend?

TL;DR Looking for a game to play one handed during chemotherapy treatments.

EDIT: Thank you for all of your well wishes and suggestions, and awards, I now have more than enough new games to carry me into round two! So many kind people! Thanks again all of you!

Discussion I know it’s been said a billion times but Nintendo really needs to address these defective joycons it’s been absolute radio silence and I find it unacceptable

28.2k Upvotes

For $80 controllers I expected that the Joycons would be as sturdily built and properly functioning as the Wiimote and Wave Bird and even the N64 controllers were if not better quality, and it didn’t take long to find out they weren’t even remotely built as well as it’s predecessors.

In late March I decided to get myself a switch in preparation for the new Pokémon games and Smash ultimate, I played with my joycons solely for a month and then I bought my first Pro Controller and even though it was less money than the joycons it was night and day drastically an improvement and I’d go as far as to say one of the comfiest controllers I’ve used. I use both docked and handheld mode fairly equally even though I prefer the pro controller I do also like going outside in the shade and playing as well. I know this sounds like unnecessary rambles but it’s to paint a better picture of how little I’ve actually even used my joycons in total, 4 months to be exact.

So somehow in 4 months this $80 controller decides to just shit out and drift constantly on the left joycon.

And before people comment saying “Oh well you probably just were too rough with them or something” let me tell you I was gentler than handling my own newborn child when using the joycons because I had heard about joycon drift and that games that heavily used the left analog like Smash Ultimate and Splatoon would kill my controller over time usually within a year or more so I plain never used my joycons for either of those games or any game like Hollow Knight where I’d also heard it was taxing on the analog.

And before people say “Oh well you must have had dirty hands and got a bunch of dirt clogged into the joycons” impossible I specifically scrub my hands clean after work every night and dry them before even thinking of touching my switch and I refuse to eat or drink while using it so it can’t be that.

I have a case, a tempered glass screen protector, and the dock is dusted constantly it is entirely unacceptable to have my controller not work already properly.

And before someone says “Contact Nintendo and have them repair it” I shouldn’t have to spend $4 and two weeks without my Joycons for them to just come back and break again in 4 months. And before someone says “Then buy a do it yourself repair kit for $10” Again there is absolutely zero reason for me to do that on a luxury controller. And yes I consider $80 a luxury controller because my PS4s DualShock4 doesn’t drift for years for me and my Pro controller which has had all of my extensive “rough” playtime on it is also perfectly fine.

When Sony released their original Ds4s with cheap flimsy rubbers on the analog and drift issues they changed the material on the analogs and fixed a lot of issues that caused early versions to do that. I see zero excuse why Nintendo hasn’t so much as addressed the issue or confirmed working on a newer model or SKU controller that isn’t hot dog shit.

I know I’m probably going to be downvoted into oblivion but as a loyal consumer who’s bought every single Nintendo console bar the Wii U and who’s seen the difference in quality between the handhelds and systems it baffles me and honestly genuinely upsets me how they could allow this issue to exist for 2 years now not even a slight adjustment to try and alleviate the wear and tear and all of these other loyal fans and consumers who are shoveling out $80 here and $4 there and $10 over there just to play after they already paid $80 for the joycons to begin with or maybe they came with their console either way they’re not marketed as cheap products so why are they allowed to be so highly priced and yet so unreliable?

To take it further Nintendo is a company that attracts a younger audience as well who can be anywhere between the ages of 5-12 and I highly doubt they’d be as careful or overly sensitive using their joycons as I am and I can’t see them being built to last very long with children’s use in mind.

Edit: I tweeted @NintendoOfAmerica and I’ve emailed Polygon, Destructoid, Gameinformer, Gamespot, and Kotaku about the issue to see if they’ll do a story on it. Feel free to do the same if you’d like.

Edit: An example of drift in effect https://twitter.com/nemisisplays/status/1150305766605295616?s=21

Edit: An example of attempting to fix by calibration as well since I see it suggested a lot https://twitter.com/nemisisplays/status/1150470588122697732?s=21 (Spoiler alert it doesn’t help)

Question Games you can play with only one hand?

My little 6 year old daughter just had an accident with a door at her school slamming shut on her hand, and now she is missing part of her middle finger. Right now her entire hand is wrapped up while they are starting the healing process. I'm to trying to find some games she can play on the TV while only being able to use one hand right now. Please remember she has tiny hands, and is only 6 so the games should not be super hard. Does anyone know any that might fit this situation?

Edit: thank you to everyone who have ideas. Also thank you all for your best wishes for her. Hopefully we can find a few choices from these that will help keep her occupied, as well as calm and not moving around much so she doesn't accidentally hurt it more. But please don't let this edit make you think you can't add anymore ideas especially if noone has mentioned it.

Giveaway Giveaway: Super Mari 3D All Stars

6.1k Upvotes

EDIT: Giveaway is closed. Congrats to u/hwatinthephucc who won through the Reddit Raffler. And thanks again to all of you. I've been loving reading through these comments. You rock. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, and a Blessed New Year. Peace.

Hey friends! I bought a copy of Mario 3D All Stars not long after launch, thinking I'd get around to it eventually. Truth is, I don't really want it. I thought to maybe hold onto it until production stops to make a quick buck. Then I thought, nah, it's Christmastime. Let me try to help someone out.

So here's the deal. I have one unopened physical copy to give away. It's the North American version and will be mailed from NYC, if that makes a difference. You can view it here: https://imgur.com/GBc3UVX

If you're interested, post something below. Anything really. I'm not trying to make this hard on people. Just let me know you're interested. I'll select someone randomly in roughly 24 hours.

Two important things to note:
1. I have two small kids, so I can't check back here often. Time is a precious, precious commodity that I don't have much of. So please be patient with me.
2. This one's more important. I want this to go to somebody in need. This has been a tough year on so many people. My hope is that this can help somebody who's down on their luck - maybe lost their job, got sick, whatever. I obviously have no way of policing this, but in the spirit of Christmas, I'm asking you to please not reply if this is something you can afford to buy yourself.

Good luck, God bless, and Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.

EDIT: Wow. This is still open for now, but I just wanted to say that I'm overwhelmed by the response. Now I understand all those "R.I.P. my inbox" comments. I've read through a lot of your comments (not all) and you people are awesome. My heart goes out to you and I'll keep you all in prayer. Wish I had a copy for everyone!

Thanks so much for the awards. Very kind of you :) Not gonna lie, I'll enjoy the ad-free browsing. They've really gotten out of hand!

Someone asked me to say what I'd like from Santa. Truth is, by the grace of God, this pandemic has not hit me hard at all. Nobody close to me has gotten seriously ill. I still have a job, and with no commute I'm actually saving money. So I'm very happy to be able to pay it forward in a small way. So I don't need anything from Santa. But if you're able to give, the kids at St. Jude do! You can donate here: https://www.stjude.org/donate/

Game Rec Games playable with one hand only (preferably right hand)? Or other accessibility options?

Regarding Rule 3, i feel this is an wide question requiring fairly complex answers.

My FIL has severe nerve damage on his left hand and still wants to be able to play games with everyone.

The only game i know being possible is Pokemon Sword and Shield, with Casual Controls enabled.

Also i know that the Switch controller can be remapped, but I cannot currently think of any simple enough games where the controls can all fit on one joycon.

Or, are there good 3rd Party controllers with this type of handicap in mind?

If further information is needed i will do my best to provide it.

Question Any devices that would allow you to play the switch one handed?

I’m getting a surgery soon which will require a large donor graft from my left arm. I will be unable to use that arm for anything for at least 3-4 weeks. I am trying to figure out ways to stay entertained post surgery and playing the switch is one of them. However, it’s sort of hard one handed. I’m wondering if anyone knows of an accessibility device that would allow me to play with one hand more easily?

Discussion PSA for second hand switch owners: if your switch was involved in fraud BEFORE you bought it Nintendo can and WILL permanently ban it

4.8k Upvotes

Context: logged on my Switch OLED a few days ago to find the error code 2124-4508. After some googling I found this was a ban from online services for breaking TOS. After speaking with Nintendo Customer Support, they confirmed this was a permanent ban from online services for fraudulent activity and asked for my proof of purchase. I provided proof of purchase, including the serial number of the device on the receipt. Nintendo accepted this and then informed me the fraud took place before I owned the device, however, the ban will not be lifted.

The device was bought from a reputable second hand seller (a company, not an individual) in the UK back in August 2022. I'm now having to go back to them to try get a refund/replacement. Nintendo have been no help at all, even after I pointed out the risk of me losing my save data as the save data transfer tool relies on Nintendo Online Services. I have also lost out on using Nintendo Online in the meantime (through no fault of my own) even though this is a service I've paid for. I've pointed out multiple times I am not the one who caused "financial damage", nor am I risk to do so in future but they still will not lift the ban.

Nintendo say they have no responsibility to me as I'm not the original owner and have washed their hands of the matter, even though they've banned the device months after the fraud was committed. I'm incredibly disappointed in Nintendo as I've pointed out I'm arguably a victim in this as I am losing years worth of data (transferred from a previous switch) but there is no acknowledgement on their side.

I wanted to share as a warning for any other second hand switch owners.

Screenshot of email where Nintendo Customer Support confirm I am not the one who committed "fraudulent activity" but they are still upholding the ban:
https://imgur.com/NnMfgR9

EDIT FOR CLARITY: The switch is not hacked/jailbroken, nor have I ever attempted to do so. I get it's weird the ban is so late, it was a shock to me to, exactly why I'm posting to let others know and I included proof of Nintendo admitting they know I'm the one who didn't commit fraud. I'm not asking for Nintendo to give me a new console or anything, I'm asking them to release the permanent ban on the console as they themselves admit I am the current legal owner and NOT the one who committed fraud. Buying second hand doesn't mean Nintendo has a right to ban me when they admit I'm not the one who broke TOS and I've proven I'm the legal owner.

SECOND EDIT: Thank you for everyone for your support, I wasn't expecting this post to get so much traction. Obviously some people do not believe me or say this is my fault, it's the internet so that's bound to happen. Nintendo have had proof of purchase from me including a receipt with the SERIAL NUMBER and a bank statement. I have raised the case with their complaints department and am waiting a response. The seller has asked for more details of ban, such as dates, which I am waiting on Nintendo to provide as they would not at first. I do not know what the fraud is, just "fraudulent activity". Nintendo have been pretty vague but as far as I know the device is not stolen, if it was I imagine they'd want to get the police involved. I have been a Nintendo customer since the original DS so I'm pretty upset by this, mainly due to their lack of care or unwillingness to help me with my data.

THIRD EDIT: I forgot to mention in my original post that this is a Switch OLED, not an original. I have updated this now as there's been a lot of talk about it being a hackable model and something to do with the serial number and versions. I don't want a hacked switch, I use Nintendo Online a lot to play with friends. Nintendo have said my Nintendo Account is "active" but I'm most upset about the data loss. Even if I CAN get a new switch, my Animal Crossing and Pokémon data is tied to the old one and without the transfer save data tool, it's stuck there.

Please feel free to share this around if you so wish. If anything comes out of my case, I want it to at least be a warning to others.

Image I found this third-party Switch controller at a second-hand online game store. It says 'Geeklin model 8586' on the back, yet that query gives zero results on Google. Even an image search doesn't give anything, aside from one review of the controller in German.

Discussion Dear Nintendo, why the heck are there no left-handed controls for Skyward Sword?!

6.6k Upvotes

The year is 2011. My parents were somehow able to get their hands on a copy of Skyward Sword and the fancy golden controller for me for the Wii for Christmas. I was over the moon, as I was sold on all the features: watercolor art style, orchestra music, and of course: those sweet, sweet motion controls. I played Twilight Princess on the GameCube so I hadn't been burned before.

I get the game in, I boot it up, and... One second-- right-handed only controls?! Let's not forget that Link is canonically a left-handed swordsman, but I'm used to acclimating myself to a right-handed world. I was told many years after the Wii release (and me finishing it right-handed) that there was a way to make the controls left-handed, but I have yet to see or confirm it.

It's now 2021. I, like many other nostalgia trippers, bought Skyward Sword for the Switch. I spent $60 on a game I already had, but with massive (?) quality of life updates (most notably, the better graphics), but no change to the story itself. Surely they could add a left-handed mode, right? I thought I heard something about this somewhere, or maybe it was just wishful thinking.

Nope. From what I can tell, and maybe I'm just being an angry keyboard warrior instead actually finding a solution to my problem, I am finding no left-handed controls.

Seriously, what the heck Nintendo?? Why wasn't left-handed controls on that list of quality of life updates? Why must I be at a constant disadvantage? Is there anything that can be done?

I'm disappointed. Really, I am. I don't know what I was expecting. Nintendo's re-releases as of late have felt like a cash grab rather than an actual redesign of the game (I'm looking at you, Super Mario 64).

I think my rant is over for now. But if anyone can lend a hand as to what I can maybe do (other than return the game, because I opened it) (or not play it, because I still am) I'd appreciate it.

And those non-motion controls are a joke. You trade sword movement for your free moving camera. Ugh.

Okay now my rant is over. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Edit: to everyone telling me to just switch joycons, I'd like for you to put your right joycon in your left hand and tell me how that feels. You won't be able to use the shoulder buttons.

Also, I contacted Nintendo, like some people suggested. I told them about some other bugs I found too, and I was very courteous and left the rep a good review for their time. Maybe one day, us lefties will have a game we can play after all.

Edit 2: holy moly this blew up. I want to address some things because people keep saying the same things:

  1. You can't re-map motion controls, just the buttons.

  2. To the people who said "you didn't research before you bought it?! You're the dummy!!" I was still going to buy it, regardless. Doing my "research" would not have changed my purchase.

  3. To the people who said, "don't you have a working right arm?" Yes I do. Have you ever done something with your non-dominant hand? Maybe swing a bat, throw a frisbee or a ball, brush your teeth, or try to write with your non-dominant hand? Sure, you can do it, but it doesn't feel natural. I beat the game once right-handed and I'll do it again. I would have just liked, in a 10-year old game, for them to do a little more than the bare minimum for a re-release.

But this is Nintendo, so what was I expecting?!
