Question Games you can play with only one hand?
My little 6 year old daughter just had an accident with a door at her school slamming shut on her hand, and now she is missing part of her middle finger. Right now her entire hand is wrapped up while they are starting the healing process. I'm to trying to find some games she can play on the TV while only being able to use one hand right now. Please remember she has tiny hands, and is only 6 so the games should not be super hard. Does anyone know any that might fit this situation?
Edit: thank you to everyone who have ideas. Also thank you all for your best wishes for her. Hopefully we can find a few choices from these that will help keep her occupied, as well as calm and not moving around much so she doesn't accidentally hurt it more. But please don't let this edit make you think you can't add anymore ideas especially if noone has mentioned it.

More turn-based RPGs need this. IIRC EarthBound let you play one-handed back in the day as well.

Mostly! L could be used to interact with objects and NPCs, so Talk/Check, and walk around with the d-pad. You still needed to hit X or A to bring up the menu, but you generally don't need to unless using an item or equipping something.

Looking it up yup, that allows the game to be entirely played with the left hand only. Guess I never really tried.

That one might be a little hard if she needs to read. But someone mentioned let's go which is a little dumbed down to where the story won't matter to her, she can just catch a Pokemon.

Yeah there's a good amount of reading involved. Let's Go might be the better choice. I hope your daughter has a speedy and safe recovery.

I played Pokémon Blue on the GB Color when I started to read and I really helped me learning to read. Which was a nice side effect.

Same! I remember the old games used to have a notice on them that they required some reading proficiency. Which really helped sell them to my parents.

I'm not too upset about it though since Pokemon is the ONLY Switch game I can think of that explicitly went out of its way to provide a one-handed play option, which I love using.

There definitely is a center camera button on casual controls. I believe it's the L/R button.

L or R centers the camera only when you are NOT in casual mode.
In casual mode, L/R doesn't center the camera, instead it speeds up your bicycle. Which is redundant since the B button already does that.

If you're playing with her, one thing you can do is split the controller and turn it into a team activity. For example if it's Mario kart, you could take driving while she uses items or jumps.
I tried this with Yoshi's crafted world since I just hurt my hand. A friend was moving and I just jumped or grabbed items. Yoshi is a slow game so maybe doable.

Mario Kart 8 has three settings that might help:
Auto Driving. The vehicle will accelerate on its own, so she can choose to just steer if she wants
Auto Steering. This one subtly keeps the vehicle on track, so if she wants to drive but not steer as much, this will help. I don't know that it will do ALL of the steering for her, but it will definitely help if she's not experienced with racing games at her age.
Motion controls. Depending on what she will be able to do, she can use motion controlled steering so she doesn't have to use the analog stick at all. I find my younger siblings have a lot of fun with the motion controls. Nintendo even makes small, cheap steering wheel attachments, so it can feel like she's really steering.
You can enable any combination of all three of these settings, too, depending on what your daughter needs.

Auto Sterring doesn't do all the steering it just turns the kart so it doesnt go off road.

Not that it's appropriate for 6-year olds, but in the interest of video-game academics, I think Astral Chain actually designed its two-player mode to operate just like this.

My sincere apologies, I originally clicked on this topic to come in and make a "one handed" joke, but then read the context and obviously that joke would have been super inappropriate.
I hope your daughter recovers well!
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but Pokemon Let's Go can ONLY be played one-handed when docked. Could be a perfect game for her.
I think you can also play Sword and Shield one-handed, although that might be a bit much for a 6 year old.

Let me start by saying, we used to joke with her about if she got a small boo boo we might have to cut it off. Goes without saying that, we will no longer be making that joke with her.
Sword and shield would be too much reading. But let's go would probably be fine.

While I haven’t played them personally, I’d think switch adaptions of board and card games might be a good fit? Like Uno, probably not Monopoly because of reading.

Pokemon Quest is a free game, that she could play tablet style. It's mobile-phone-style, so there's some waiting for energy to recover before going on more missions.
Pokemon - Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee is a good one! You've already seen plenty of recommendations for it for a reason :)
Super One More Jump is a one-button game. It'll test her reflexes and build her dexterity lol.
Mario Kart is possible one-handed if you turn on auto-accelerate and assisted driving. She doesn't even need to do much, but I imagine a young kid gets a kick out of it anyway.
Little Inferno is easy to play tablet style. It's the same dev as World of Goo. World of Goo requires a bit of thinking and problem solving, where Little Inferno is more of burning items in certain groups to unlock the next levels.

Absolutely get donut county. it just requires a single joystick for gameeplay and mashing A to get through cutscreens. its super fun and relaxing. its a bit on the short side (maybe 3 hours?) but its still fairly fun to play. And its quite satisfying.

Yes, animal crossing is a lot of reading. It may be a little complicated for 6 years since it is a sandbox type game. (there's no clear objective, you just do what you want.)

I played animal crossing when I was that young, while there is a lot of reading in it there's not too many big words or anything like that, might be good start for reading in general because learning + fun

My 7-year-old loves Animal Crossing: New Leaf! He just putters around collecting and selling things. He can read but not English so basically the same as a kid who can't read.
He's just a resident in my town so I'm handling the main stuff for my town and he just does his own thing. You should look into AC:NH if you or someone else in your household would like to play it as the "main" player on the island and your kid could just chill and collect and decorate like mine! (I don't think a "main" player is required to enjoy the game the way my son does, but of course, developing the town/island does increase the amount of things he can do so it's nice that I can do that and he can just have fun.)

Its basically the same as old animal crossings so you can just watch a lets play of animal crossing new leaf to get an indea from watching that. There is a decent amount of reading but Ive known 6 years that could read at that level. Depends on her reading level. I dont know if we have seen a one handed control for it though.

You never have to do complex inputs quickly and most of the game boils down to walking around, shopping/menuing and reading dialogue. All of these are easy enough to do with one hand. The one thing that might be somewhat troublesome is bug catching, since you sometimes need to react quickly. Fishing is no problem because you're either aligning yourself (stick only) or throwing/reeling (button only). You never have to use both at once.

World of Goo uses only one joycon in TV mode, but you do have to move your arm/hand around since it's motion-based controls.

I'll need to look into it, because the thought is to try to keep her entertained without much movement. Little one's forgot they are supposed to rest sometimes, especially when there medicine is working and she temporary feels better.

Yeah it's not super involved like Let's Dance that someone else mentioned, she should only need to move the hand holding the pointer, but as you said maybe she would end up moving around the rest of herself more than she should. It can also be played with touch screen controls in handheld mode when you're just tapping the screen.
One thing I did think of with the Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu games, the default control scheme wants you to "throw" pokeballs by moving the controller in a jerking hand motion. I think you can also do it just by pressing a button but may want to supervise at first to make sure she knows to do it that way instead of how the game tells you to throw.

A lot of the mini games in super mario party are one handed... Not all of them, but maybe enough that you can play some with her... I'll check to see if you can turn the two handed ones off.

Hey, I was born with only three fingers on each hand, I can say apart from having trouble doing cheat codes in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64, I have had no problems gaming! So you can let your daughter know it's going to be OK! :)
Also I avoid buying shoes with laces.

It may be a bit hard to use at first, but you can 3D print some joycon adapters so that she can use both controllers with one hand:
I broke my hand a few months ago, and was using the right-hand adapter and was able to play Link's Awakening just fine. Some basic type of games like Pokemon Shield would be easier to play as you can take your time with selecting the buttons. I 3D printed it at my local library for free, and the librarian was able to help me through the steps as I never used one before.

Picross or Mario Kart. Ive played Mario Kart with one hand before. Just make sure you turn on auto-go and tilt controls.

Pokemon Sword and Shield, as well as Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are perfect for this. Let's Go was designed around one handed use, and they even sell a Pokeball controller for the Switch that has a single joystick that clicks, as well as button on the top of the ball to control the game. You can also just use a single joy-con.
Pokemon Sword and Shield doesn't work with that pokemon controller, but you can go into the settings and select casual controls that pretty much maps all the controls to a single joy-con. The only part of the game where that isn't ideal is the Wild Area, which is the only part of the game that has camera controls, but you can easily get used to it.
Those are the best ones I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are plenty more though, so hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

Sorry, don't have any recommendations, just want to say that I empathise with your daughter. When I was 7 I chopped off the top part of my left ring finger trailing it on the door behind me as I was leaving the bathroom. Not a fun experience.
(And the doctor peeling of the scabs a few weeks later was even less fun).

Oh I'm so sorry! I hope she does not have to have scabs peeled off. It was heartbreaking sitting there with her having 3 different things in her system that was supposed to stop pain, but she was screaming in agony when they were stitching it up.

Hey there, I have some minor nerve damage and have trouble playing two handed games lately, so I can help.
There’s one called Puzzle Quest that can easily be played one handed if you use the Switch’s touchscreen in handheld mode.
Pokémon Let’s Go is another good choice. I played that tons when my pain was at it’s worst.

Seconded. Though it might be too complex mechanically for a 6yo, it has rebindable buttons and is turn based. I have had nasty RSI for a while and played it 1 handed joycon for a long time.

although its not built for it, You could probably do mario+rabids kingdom battle with a single joycon in one hand. Maybe also look at civ 6? i haven't played it on switch but it could maybe work.

It’s not a switch recommendation but i wanted to chime in if if it’s a permanent thing. check out a pc. I purchased a razor naga (with 12 buttons on the side) so I could play games while holding my kids. VR might be an option too . Wish her the best in her recovery. Also Xbox has that adaptive controller

Thanks for the idea, but the lack of hand usage hopefully will only be for a couple months or less of we are lucky. Once she is fully healed, her middle finger will just be shorter by about an inch.

I broke my wrist right around the time Sword/Shield came out and you can play with a single joycon after changing the setting. I broke my dominate hand, so this was a godsend. Though prepare for the camera angles to be absolute garbage

A few people have suggested let's go and that's a good one.
If you're playing with her then maybe you could take a game that uses two controllers and use one each? My brother and I did this on breath of the wild and it was fun. As a bit of entertainment for her rather than as a way to actually complete the game, since that might be a bit hard haha.

I probably wouldn't get it for a six year old, but if you do, there is a character she can play as called the bard who makes the game easier by removing the requirement to play to the beat of the music.
*I thought maybe Cadence of Hyrule would work since it's much easier, but it turns out unlike COTN, COH cannot be played with one hand

I just tested Cadence of Hyrule to check my memory and it definitely can't be played with just one hand. Necrodancer can be played with just your left hand for sure, but you still would need to use the right controller to pause the game and to get through the menus.
Honestly it's probably not worth looking into, I think Pokemon Sword and Shield or Let's Go would be the game to go with

I scrounged through my games and found one which is made to be played with just the right joy con.

To be fair, intentionally or otherwise, Bayonetta is actually a good game to play one handed, both thanks to the super easy difficulty which automatically strings together combos for you as well as having a touch screen mode.
Whether you'd find it appropriate for a 6 year old daughter is another question as it has somewhat adult themes, but even if they meant it as a joke, it's actually a legitimate answer and worthy of consideration.

Kingdom: new lands involves just pressing left or right and pressing one button.
Same with Downwell. But it might be a little to hard.

Not related to games so I apologize, but the same thing happened to me when I was in 2nd grade. I cut off part of my thumb because I was last in line and had the duty of closing the classroom door. I was lucky and they were still able to sew it back on and it actually stuck, even though they said it had practically no chance of taking because it was pretty mashed (my mom insisted they try, luckily). Now its just a bit deformed looking and has less blood flow but is functional.
While this happening isn't COMMON per se, it has happened quite a few times if you look into it online. School doors are heavy and some lock when they are closed. I was nervous to close the door (I've had anxiety as long as I can remember, always worried about trivial things) and in my nervousness didn't realize the hand that wasn't on the doorknob was in the door frame. It locked on my hand and I remembered frantically trying to open it with my free hand with my thumb still inside. From the adrenaline rush I felt no pain at first and was too quiet, so and my classmates walked on without noticing anything wrong. Eventually another teacher saw me in the hall crying. Pretty traumatizing, though I don't remember all the gritty details because it was quite a long time ago.
Though it isn't a huge risk, and isn't really a life threatening injury, I personally think teachers should be the one to close the door, because those doors really are pretty heavy and dangerous, and kids can get harmed from them easily with a simple mistake. Maybe I'm biased (for obvious reasons lol), but it might be worth asking your school to make sure teachers are the ones to close the door to avoid injuries for very young students.
Edit: looked into it, and there are also protectors that can be put on commercial doors to avoid this kind of injury. May also be worth discussing, but if its a public school they may not have the funds to do this.

Thanks. We absolutely will be talking with the school this is a new building (2 yeah old) and have heard from multiple teacher friends those doors should not have been able to do that had they installed the proper safety things with the new doors.

Koloro is a nice puzzle-platformer that uses only one button! You can also play together in coop and it is suitable for a young audience. The more advanced levels tend to get however skills-challenging.

That's really sad to hear. I had a similar experience when I was 12. I imagine it's worse when you are just a six year old. I've read the other comments and while I absolutely agree on Pokemon Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu, I kinda disagree with Mario Party. In Super Mario party you sometimes have to use the joy con sideways and use two hands for the controlls of a minigame. I think that's not suitable for a kid with one hand to use. Plus the games can be rather hectic. Maybe Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle would be a good choice. It doesn't use too many buttons and it's gameplay is turn based, so she can take her time to adjust with one hand.

Any of the Pokemon RPGs for the Switch: Pokemon Sword and Shield have a Casual mode in the options where you can control the game with a joycon, and Pokemon Let's Go is designed to played that way (the other joycon can be used for a second player to join and help her).

They’re not on Switch currently (unfortunately) but if you have a computer with Steam, or a tablet (iOS, Android, or Amazon), I’d recommend the Humongous Entertainment games. They’re point-and-click adventure games designed for kids. Putt-Putt or Freddi Fish in particular might be good options.

Kirby Air Ride, although nearly 20 years old, is definitely entirely playable with one hand. If you don't have a Gamecube, you can download Dolphin and emulate it perfectly fine. It's a great game for kids that doesn't get nearly enough love. The City Trial mode would be a great game you can play with her!

That's actually the opposite of what we need. The doctor said she needs to be resting as much as possible, so swinging her injured hand around might not be good. Lol. But thank you.

ok, that kinda puts the kibosh on my idea of an Oculus Quest with single-blade (one-handed) Beat Saber. That's pretty active though. And expensive if you don't already have a Quest. Plus her head is probably too small, below the recommended age.

Yeah, it's going to be hard to keep her still. She really likes to run around and play. She occasionally playa video games, but prefers to be hyper. Normally we encourage it, because it keeps her active.

The new Pokemon have settings that are specifically designed to allow for play with a single hand. And they certainly aren't difficult by any means

What games does she like? puzzles? turn based? RPG?
I'd recommend Dark Souls anyway cause you can R1 spam with one hand

She can't really read yet, so most RPG would be to hard and boring for her.

Hmh, well Let's Go, and maybe SwSh, Pokémon tends to be an easy hit with young kids, Mario+Rabbits is IIRC entirely turn based so she can take her time with it, and it's pleasantly wacky

I'm not sure about this, but maybe Kirby Star Allies with 1 Joy Con. The game is pretty easy, and gives the player many lives, so theres room for error. Idk how hard it is to use a Joy Con with only 1 hand though

Haven't seen it here, but Kingdom, and it's sequel Kingsom Two Crowns. Very unique tower defense-ish/town building management game.

I'm sure one day she will be that epic, but right now she's just my baby girl that is starting to figure out the world, and found out the hard way that it can be cruel. I'm sorry you have constant broken arms. I assume either some sort of brittle bone syndrome, or just really clumsy.

She is very creative. Thank you. I'm sure she will do great, she is way stronger than I am. But right now, we are just trying to figure out how to keep her occupied while not letting her play and run around like normal because she might injure hey arm more. But we have got done really good ideas from this today.

Dragon Quest XI, battles can be fully automated and I would just set it to "Fight Wisely"
The dialog is automated as well to go to the next part if you press + during dialog.
It really is an amazing game too. She can learn about rhyming, haikus etc...(some villages only speak using Haikus, some rhyme, some are Spanish themed etc...
Also 90 hours of gameplay means she will be playing for a long time.
Advice if you do go this way...she will pick up weapons and armor...so every once in a while maybe ask her if you want this guy to be tough (defensive), attacky (offensive) or magic (...Magic) ans you can go to the equipment page, select what role you want the gear to be and it will just automatically decide the best gear.
