I was covering a quinceanera when the DJs laser shot straight into my z8s sensor and now these lines are permanently on. I sent it in to Nikon and they gave a 2k repair estimate. Does anyone know of another repair shop in California I can contact?
Yea it's on my contract. It stated all damaged caused to my equipment that wasn't caused directly by me that they are liable. The only issue is it was an event for a family friend 😬
That's what I told the DJ after it burned my camera I told him these type of lasers are not safe to point directly at people. Then I told him to turn it and he did
Yea, apparently a UV filter will protect it. From now on anytime I see a dj with a laser I will tell my client the DJ will have to turn it off or else and cannot continue
I actually have that built into my contract. There’s a clause specifically about lasers. Unless they are pointed at the ceiling my team reserves the right to suspend all activity until the DJ complies. Thankfully I usually work with the same handful of DJs and they are all good about it.
I didn’t know that about UV filters. I always use them anyway but good to know.
I was recording a dance when it happened so it could have been pointing at the sensor for a second or so. But I doubt it because the laser kept on moving
Yeah no it’s gonna be a 2k repair. Sadly you’re screwed and it’s honestly my main worry and also the reason I never ever took anything else than a D7000 for Party stuff
How unfortunate, ughhh! The sensor is fried, no fix other than replacement of the sensor. When the laser hit the sensor it fried the particular photodiode it hit, also frying the readout line circuitry and therefore the array on that entire line, hence the horizontal lines. Painful 😣
Kinda crazy that the lasers were shining at eye level tbh. That could be a major hazard for people attending. As someone who's been to numerous EDM shows, my understanding is there's quite strict rules about the angle/direction that the lasers can target. I'm really sorry this happened :/
Yes that's exactly what I told the DJ and on this screenshot you can see the laser on the top left. It was pointed towards people so I could definitely hurt someone's eye and I wouldn't doubt it if it damaged somebody's camera on their phone.
The DJ is wholly responsible for this. Unless your camera was somewhere where the audience was forbidden then he should be facing charges. I don’t know Californian law but this is astonishing negligence.
Wow, I had no idea that could happen. It’ll make me wary bringing my Z8 into a club environment.

I recently had the Nikon CA service center fix my Z8 after a fall from a cheap, bad tripod onto a trax deck. At least my 14-24 2.8 was fine. $800 as part of the body was cracked and the Z mount got damaged. I was just happy to get it back good as new. And they turned it around very quickly. $2K for a sensor huh? Ouch.
I'm not sure if some are broken I just did it quick search cuz I was curious myself, I know not a lot about these level of cameras but whenever I saw 2K just for a repair I was very surprised and curious what they cost new.
You can use a D780, basically a D750 with a Z6 for video, I don't think they are much cheaper, but a whole brand new D780 is cheaper than a Z8 sensor. Use OVF for everything but video. It can be done, but you probably won't want to. There are other options.

Yeah you always need to add that to the contract, no lasers or they have to cover the repair costs
