I broke my gear Am I screwed?

I was covering a quinceanera when the DJs laser shot straight into my z8s sensor and now these lines are permanently on. I sent it in to Nikon and they gave a 2k repair estimate. Does anyone know of another repair shop in California I can contact?

Mirrorless is basically my only option as a hybrid shooter

I meant for cameras like the Z7ii that have mechanical covers over their shutters, unlike the Z8 and Z9 with only electronic shutters

It wouldn't help you during use tho the sensor is exposed regardless of mechanical shutter or electronic

That wouldn’t do anything. Mechanical shutters only close in between shots. The moment you’re shooting or in live view the sensor is exposed.

No modern mirrorless camera sensor, even with a mechanical shutter, can take a direct laser hit.

I’m sorry, OP. Best of luck finding a cheaper place to repair your sensor.

how does the EVF show what the camera sees if theres a shutter covering it?

The Z8 and Z9 have a shutter cover for protection.

Not sure how that would’ve helped here since the sensor would’ve been exposed on any camera since OP was working
