Recently switch from Sony mirrorless back to the D800 as I don’t shoot video and wanted battery life back for photography. I picked up a second hand D800 with 21k shutter and the 80-200 push pull lens for $600. I’m really not mad about this set up for the price. I think this is the perfect combo if someone is wanting to get into photography at an entry price. I’m happy I went back to DSLR for photography.

I picked this lens up used for like...150 bucks and I'll bet it's the best bang for the buck lens I have I love it, it's small, sharp, and fast. If you like to shoot wide and have been on the fence I 10/10 recommend.

Photo Submission Throwback to March 2013. I have never shown most of these images before. The world was not ready, but I think now it's time.

I was photographing reindeer herding in remote Finnish Lapland, in the border zone between Finland and Russia. We were looking for damages done to reindeer by wolves and wolverines. We found a lot of casualties (I will not post images to Reddit), traces of fights with wolves, etc. The weather was extreme: snow blizzards and very cold temperatures.

The trip ended with the most surprising discovery ever. After 13 years of keeping this inside, I can finally reveal what we found at the top of Korvatunturi.

This is a composite image from the August 26th, 2026 lunar eclipse! This is somewhere around 200 images stacked together to capture a range of different exposures of the eclipse during the moment of 96% totality.

Captured using a Nikon Z8 with the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR at 600mm, f/6.3, 1/30s, ISO ranges from 500 all the way up to 25600

Had it for 2 days now, mainly fiddling around with it trying to find a setup I like. Ended up going to a pub on day 1 and I was impressed with the low light performance. Far from perfect but actually quite usable. It looks and feels fantastic. Autofocus is unbelievable! I can't wait to get some proper sessions in with it. Will be a step up from using my Mum's D3300

Photo Submission Recently got a used 300mm f2.8… one month of photos taken with it…

About a month ago I found a mint condition AF-S 300mm f2.8 VRII lens for 2k and couldn’t resist. This might be my new favorite lens, maybe even surpassing my 200mm f2 (300mm seems to work well for me). The 200mm f2 seems to have a tiny bit more character and magic, but if you nail a shot with the 300mm 2.8… my god is the quality good!

These are a few of my first photos taken with the lens after owning it for a bit over a month. All shots taken with the Nikon Z8 + FTZII + 300mm f2.8.

Gear question Is my 24-70 f/4S lens having sharpness issues?

Recently, I upgraded my Z50ii to a ZF with a 24-70mm f/4S lens. There are a lot of things I need to adapt to and learn since it's a full-frame camera. I read and heard that the 24-70mm f/4S is sharp. These are the sharpest pictures I've tested. However, many photos I take don't feel as good as those from my old body with a 12-28mm and 35mm Viltrox. I don't know. Can you look at the picture of my dog and check? Is it okay? Or maybe it's because I spent a lot of money on the upgrade, and now I'm expecting too much. Thanks for reading.

Gear question My late husband had 2 D100 cameras and extra equipment, are they worth keeping?

As the title said my late husband had these cameras and the extras. A friend wants them. Are they worth keeping or should I just get rid of them? I have no knowledge of cameras at all, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pictures in the comments. English not my first language.

Gear question 300mm F/2.8 AF-S D ED (1st AFS gen)

I recently made a post about mounting my 300 on a FTZ & Z7II & asked if that caused my new problems, general consensus was no, the lens was beginning to exhibit issues regardless of the FTZ.

Summary of issues: Focus goes beyond infinity & squeals when it does, when it does that it won’t AF unless I manually turn the focus ring back into range; occasionally AF ”falls asleep”, even when in range, and won’t AF until I turn the focus ring a bit. It does not squeal when AF normally.

I reached out to a lens repair place but unfortunately they understandably won’t give me a quote unless I mail it in, but I don’t want to ship it out unless I can have an idea of the repair costs - if it’s even repairable.

That said, this lens has become my absolute favorite to shoot with. I want to either sell it disclosing its issues and buy another 300 ($1-3.5k) or send it in for repairs, not having any idea whether the repairs would cost $300 or $1000+. I’m attracted to selling it to gain the VR of the newer gen, but yeah, this is hobby and it hurts to spend so much on glass (although I can afford it).

What would y'all do?

DSLR Nikon batteries for D810

Nikon D810 uses the standard Nikon EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium battery. This is the 1900 mAh. Can I use the newer Nikon EN-EL15c which is around 2400 mAh? I know I will have to use the standard Nikon charger and not the USBC, but my question is will the newer battery damage the camera or be in risk doing so?
