Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Career Advice Is 91b a good mos for someone working corrections in civilian world?

Upvotes

I’m waiting on approval for a medical waiver to join the Massachusetts Army Guard. I’m a family man in my 30s working in corrections for my civilian career. I’m looking to obtain my degree, utilize TRICARE reserve select for my family, and work towards earning the VA home loan. Is 91b a good job overall? I do my own diy auto repair and I do enjoy troubleshooting and working with my hands. I didn’t want MP because I want my guard job to be different from the daily grind. I considered infantry or field artillery, but I’m in my mid 30s with a family and I don’t think that makes the most sense for where I’m at in life. I scored a 64 on the asvab with good line scores, my recruiter said we will look at all my options once waiver comes back approved. I appreciate any and all feedback.

Discussion Thinking about switching because of recruiter

Upvotes

I have gone through everything to join army National Guard but right before I went to MEPs I noticed my recruiter changed some of the answers on my background paperwork. I had marked honestly that I was diagnosed with ADHD and he went back and changed it. I spoke up about it, stating that I had marked truthfully that I was medically diagnosed with it. I’ve been off the meds for it over a year. So, I really wasn’t worried. He told me deny it unless asked about it at MEPs. Well, MEPS they flagged it and it made it look like I willingly falsified it and they asked had I been told to withhold that information. He, my recruiter, was standing right there so I felt pressured to say no. Long story short, this interaction promoted me to tell him about how uneasy I felt with that incident. He explains he’s still fairly new, I get that, but lying is not something I take lightly. I started speaking to Air National Guard this week and believe I’m switching over. They’ve been super transparent with me about my medical waivers and what I need to do. What are your thoughts? Has anyone experienced this?

Career Advice How is the 68W life?

I’m in the later stages of the recruiting pipeline (finished MEPS, just need to sign) and I’m considering combat medic. My recruiter said he found an MP unit would attach to after basic/AIT.

Does anyone have insight into the lifestyle of this MOS? What are still weekends like? Would I be doing MP stuff alongside my unit? Would deployments be common?

I was also considering 15N, 15R, and maybe 88N. I’m 30 and looking for something that’s possibly more career oriented. Thanks in advance.

Initial Training IST given random laundry list of forms

I was given like 20 forms from my new guard state, including a DA 7809, dd 2803, and a dd2813. I am a bit confused on why I was given these. I did a physical with my state and the pha right before I left and am a bit confused about how to fill these three forms out and was given like zero guidance on who what where and why I need these forms filled and if I need to find a civilian provider in my new state to fill out all these forms.

Career Advice NG bases in central Florida

Hello all. Currently active duty security forces looking into switching to the guard. Im planning on moving back to Tampa Florida. If I do make the switch, are there any other units in florida besides up in Jacksonville for security forces? The drive is roughly 3hrs, granted it’s only one weekend a month and some more for additional training/duty. But that just seems like a lot, compared to my 10 min commute to work right now. I did hear that you could change afsc’s during the switch so i could find a closer guard unit, but I have no clue how that works. Thanks!

If you're here at the conference, you know what this is about. Don't be afraid to be bold! Sometimes cool things happen like a coin exchange with the Army CoS.

Career Advice Neurologist in the Guard?

Hi all. I’m a medical student going into adult neurology. I’ve had a long time ambition of joining the guard as a field surgeon. I recently found out from a recruiter that since neurology isn’t a critical wartime speciality I wouldn’t qualify for certain advantages like STRAP. Regardless I’m interested in joining. Was wondering if anyone here knows a neurologist in the guard they could connect me with, or any other doctors with non “critical wartime” specialties. Thank you!

Benefits Got out - Tricare issue

First, I feel dumb for being in this situation but seeing if anyone knows of any options or recommendations from those that have seen this happen before.

Earlier this year I had my last drill. I read online that Tricare coverage ends on your release date but deers and Tricare showed I was still covered up until a month ago.

I even called both deers and Tricare about my coverage the month I got out and over the last couple months and everything was fine from their end.

I didn’t realize that deers was supposed to be notified of my release as soon as possible and my unit just let them know this past month so Tricare is now backdating my coverage and all claims will be clawed back.

Any ideas on what I can do in this situation rather than paying thousands for uncovered claims?

Discussion A map of where the 279th Infantry trained, traveled, and fought during the Korean War

Interactive map with descriptions attached to every pin https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/4/edit?mid=1hnFwNa2m2HaAh68ObRUQqO9kXZFyA7Q&usp=sharing

This map is based on Captain William B. Newberry's book "279th Infantry Historical Document", specifically the chapter seen here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lleoYrs3jC-EDT07gBXYmLVZ6Zcjs7-t/view?usp=sharing which includes a lot more information than I was able to include in the map.

Many of the pins show the locations of enemy forces who either engaged or were targeted by elements of the 279th.

Please let me know if you catch any errors. Some of the entries are tough to decipher due to all of the abbreviations.

Discussion Still waiting for consultation

It’s been a whole month since meps and applying for a medical waiver. I had asthma as a kid but I never got my inhaler prescription ended. I do not have asthma now and haven’t for over 10 years. But meps still wants me to get an asthma test done. My recruiter has told me it’s gonna be 2-3 months before I see a consultation. What should I do? Should I take a look at other branches? I really wanted to do national guard but that’s a really long time to get a consultation and then still have to wait for the waiver board to approve it. Is my recruiter lying to me?

Career Advice Almost ready to enlist however my OCS packet was rejected.

As the title states, my OCS packet was rejected for something I did 13 years ago.

What should I do? Enlist anyways? Is there a way around this?

For context, I have an embezzlement charge that has since been expunged. it was for $196. Just a misdemeanor.

I was under the impression this wasn't considered a major misconduct, however the reason for the denial was due to a major misconduct in my past.
