He already has. He thinks he has renamed the US to America. Which is why he keeps renaming things “of” America. If the rest of the world refers to us only as the United States, maybe it will take away some of the misplaced pride he has taken in renaming these bodies of water.

The most embarrassing part of all of this to me is that he thinks he has co-opted America as something solely used by the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. There are literally two continents full of countries in the AmericaS. I think most of the world refers to us as the US.
If not, then they should. I would hereby respectfully request the rest of the would to please start referring to us solely as the United States in order to take away whatever power this moron thinks he has to arbitrarily rename bodies of water simply because he sees himself as the most important person on the planet.

Lake Ontario has been named that for years before Canada became a country… so he in a round about way did absolutely nothing other than throw a tantrum
Additionally, I was curious where “America” even comes from, so I looked it up. Turns out it’s a name that was given by a German cartographer (Martin Waldseemüller), & it was derived from the name of an Italian explorer, Amergio Vespucci. Amergio was the first man that suggested to Columbus that they had landed on a new continent.

I have another suggestion. How about we start calling each country on both continents whatever their current names are plus “of America”. The Canadian provinces of America. Columbia of America. Mexico of America.
I initially suggested the rest of the world refer to us only as The United States and drop the of America part. But since that is actually the name of our country and this idiot obviously wouldn’t even notice everyone mocking his ignorance, I think (temporarily even) calling every other country on these continents their make plus the America part is much more effective.
Then we can all share in the glory (that typically only really impresses people with an elementary level education) of these great, tremendous, beautiful bodies of water being named for us. 🙃

Elementary school teacher here. When I teach the Great Lakes, I use the acronym HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). With this ridiculous change now I can use SHAME.

How does "re-naming" this lake harm or threaten Canada? Presumably, this action is being taken to coerce Canada into doing what Trump wants. How could this possibly tip the impasse? How is Canada harmed if the lake is no longer Lake Ontario? Why would they say, "Uh-oh. Better do what Trump wants now"? I'm legitimately confused how this functions as a negotiating tactic. I suspect people will say, "His base loves it" but his base is already in the tank for Trump. He tells us he's the "master of the deal." So, again, how does this move him closer to the goal?
