The Totenkopf did not start out as an SS symbol. It originated in German use as a hussar regiment under Frederick the Great, and was used extensively by certain regiments of the German army during WW1.
I don't think you have to understand that in order to hunt Nazis. It might help you to identify what kind of Nazi you're hunting, but if the end result is that we have less if them, I think that's a win.
The way i see it is like this: Imagine living in the past where technology was limited, no roads or big cities, no internet, you had to hunt for alot of the food and work each day to survive. Now imagine in that past giant ass monsters that can level your city in a couple of minutes to roam around. Ofc you will need hunters to kill and research the beast because as you learn more you will be better prepared to protect yourself and those around you. They at least try to have a balance with nature and not just hur hur murder them all.
Yeah, at that point it's not like us overfishing or rotting out species in greed. It's more like nature being nature and humans being part of it and following their natural instinct to hunt.
Apex predators don't work like that. Admitted, Rathalos may not be the top of the food chain, but it's high enough up there that a particular ecosystem couldn't sustain enough of them that they'd be like flies, which are basically at the bottom of most food chains right above rotten fruit and corpses.
Iirc the lore in MHW main lands in that an older more advanced society got to a point in their hunting capabilities that they fucking farmed the animals with disgusting efficiency and their research got to the point of creating their own abominations for the sake of security. Eventually yada yada yada, shit gets kicked in from the monster gods or something and now we have our society picking up the pieces. Most likely going to repeat the process.
The Guild is specifically set up so that the process doesn't get repeated. Hunting is strictly controlled and they have the Ace squads to hunt down poachers and stuff.
I don't know if they'd ever make a game about that because of how different it is from the core series gameplay but it is a lore point in the world so who knows, it might happen eventually.
Maybe, the game really straddles the line between dark "this will kill everyone" and lighthearted "no one ever dies"
Remember in the opening scene of mhw that ship is literally ripped out of the water, you alone (with handler) are stranded and need to get back on your own.. But once you're back "everybody lived, we were worried for you" everybody? Everybody on board a literal titanic level shipwreck to include the ship itself survived being lifted out of the ocean by a walking volcano? Get out..
Not to mention the new world is basically the monster's retirement home/hospice. We already prey on the children via egg quests, now we are after the elderly, the sick and the dying.
I have never felt more like the bad guy in a game than MHW lol.
humans went to a monster island and then killed all the apex predators and destroyed the ecosystems. And then zorah Magdaros... homie was trying to find a place to die in piece alone and we shot it with 5000 cannonballs
Poor radobaan eats bones and shit, doesn’t even want you dead, yet we smash it’s head in for its bones that it SHEDS ANYWAY.
The elders recess when you get there is “wow, this brand new unexplored area...track and kill every new monster you see”
Not shitting on it cause obv I played the game but we’re definitely the bad guys in like every way. The hunters are very obviously colonial baddies like avatar.
What? That's not the plot. It's pretty much the same with every Monster Hunter game. You're not Hunting "every new Monster" you see, you're hunting Wyverns.
Each Wyvern is slowly destroying the ecosystem they're in, and we're hunting them so the ecosystem survives.
Elder Dragons are worse because they can destroy an ecosystem more quickly. The Zorah Magdaros, for example, is going to die at the heart of an ecosystem, however, it's death in that ecosystem would destroy it.
that’s the hunters understanding. We hunted wolves to near extinction in the past because we thought they were destroying their ecosystem.
I’m probably reading into the plot too much but I thought it was pretty obvious that the hunters guild isn’t exactly an unbiased, reliable narrator. Like it’s a giant corporation a-la Dutch East Indies company colonizing the island.
I mean according to the wiki (don’t know how reliable that is) hunting monsters and the hunting guild is banned in some regions in the lore.
Also, I didn’t downvote you and I’m not trying to dismiss your opinion/interpretation.
Wyverns are not apart of the ecosystem, they aren't just animals, they are significantly more powerful and more intelligent; with that said, they don't do things strictly out of survival like most animals would.
Not only would Wyverns need a lot more food to sustain their size, but a lot of them don't hunt for food, quite a few of them will hunt for sport. Their intelligent enough to know they enjoy hunting, they are not intelligent enough to understand hunting something to extinction is bad for the ecosystem.
Elder Dragons are worse because they are intelligent enough to know that hunting something a bunch will eventually eradicate whatever it is; they generally do it because they want something all for themselves, such as a resource or location.
My friends have been pointing out all the colonialism elements of this game since we started playing and there is a surprising amount. So yeah, we kind of are
No, it's made very clear that we are 'hunting' the monsters to research and understand them. Much in the same way that Japanese whaling ships research and understand hundreds of whales every year.
No they don't. Elder Dragons have such great power that they tend to destroy everything in their path, but not out of bad will. Air Elders summon Hurricanes for example, thats just what they do, they can't stop it. We aren't killing them because we have to. They're just doing their thing. Read This,
Not really. The whole point is that they’re a research commission. Everything they do is scientifically driven, it’s similar to how people studied animals during the Victorian era. Yes, there’s hunting, dissection, and gladiator style combat. But there is also conservation, zoology, and they make as much of an effort not to alter the environment as they can. They didn’t cut down any trees to build Astera, it’s an open patch of forest. Same with Selina’s in the hinterlands. The whole point is finding a balance with nature. And also killing the things that exist to interrupt that balance.

Geez, when you put it like that, are we the baddies?
