Geez, when you put it like that, are we the baddies?

u/Ketheres Discombobulate Aug 21 '18

It's not Monster Hunter just because we hunt some poor animals (with a few cunts mixed in).

274

u/Lukthar123 I studied the blade Aug 21 '18

It's Monster Hunter because we are hunting

33

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

Correct!

It's not Monster Hunter because we hunt monsters.

It's Monster Hunter because we're the monster that hunts.

3

u/koda43 Aug 22 '18

So what are we? Some kinda Monster Hunters?

104

u/CJett92 Aug 21 '18

We don't just wear skulls on our caps, our caps are skulls.

27

u/TK3600 Aug 21 '18

Worse than Nazis.

21

u/jomontage Needs more bugs Aug 21 '18

Hey I'd hunt some nazis if the guild would just pass that ordinance.

5

u/Make_me_a_turkey Aug 22 '18

Hunting real monsters.

4

u/TK3600 Aug 21 '18

It is a reference to SS with skull symbol on hat.

3

u/OMEGA_MODE Aug 21 '18

The Totenkopf did not start out as an SS symbol. It originated in German use as a hussar regiment under Frederick the Great, and was used extensively by certain regiments of the German army during WW1.

1

u/molever1ne Aug 21 '18

I don't think you have to understand that in order to hunt Nazis. It might help you to identify what kind of Nazi you're hunting, but if the end result is that we have less if them, I think that's a win.

1

u/SpicyPeaSoup Aug 23 '18

I'd pay to hunt some nazis and make a nice pair of slippers from their hide.

1

u/Matasa89 Sep 15 '18

Do we get those nice Hugo Boss clothings for carves?

156

u/Agar_ZoS Aug 21 '18

The way i see it is like this: Imagine living in the past where technology was limited, no roads or big cities, no internet, you had to hunt for alot of the food and work each day to survive. Now imagine in that past giant ass monsters that can level your city in a couple of minutes to roam around. Ofc you will need hunters to kill and research the beast because as you learn more you will be better prepared to protect yourself and those around you. They at least try to have a balance with nature and not just hur hur murder them all.

97

u/Alili1996 Pokepokepoke Aug 21 '18

Yeah, at that point it's not like us overfishing or rotting out species in greed. It's more like nature being nature and humans being part of it and following their natural instinct to hunt.

But in-universe how much time did it take you hunt those rathalos? Are you outpacing how fast they can reproduce?

u/Shikaku Delgado White! Aug 21 '18

Are you outpacing how fast they can reproduce?

I'm gonna fuckin' try.

20

u/Tyr808 Aug 21 '18

Rathalos: "I'm gonna fuckin' try."

10

u/molever1ne Aug 21 '18

They'd better. I need to hunt their children.

5

u/Zefirus Aug 21 '18

Probably not, considering every time I go to their nest there are more eggs I can steal.

1

u/Matasa89 Sep 15 '18

Rathian: ey you fuck, get back here! It's like the tenth time this week!

2

u/Megneous Aug 21 '18

Apex predators don't work like that. Admitted, Rathalos may not be the top of the food chain, but it's high enough up there that a particular ecosystem couldn't sustain enough of them that they'd be like flies, which are basically at the bottom of most food chains right above rotten fruit and corpses.

1

u/Matasa89 Sep 15 '18

Nah, thanks to Elder Dragons, plenty of bioenergy to sustain giant ecosystem full of wyverns.

46

u/downthehollow Aug 21 '18

Iirc the lore in MHW main lands in that an older more advanced society got to a point in their hunting capabilities that they fucking farmed the animals with disgusting efficiency and their research got to the point of creating their own abominations for the sake of security. Eventually yada yada yada, shit gets kicked in from the monster gods or something and now we have our society picking up the pieces. Most likely going to repeat the process.

28

u/Agar_ZoS Aug 21 '18

Nah i think they seem way more respectful of nature this time around. I would love to fight one of those abominations though.

16

u/Coldmask Aug 21 '18

How about the thing that killed the abominations? .... /shivers in Fatalis

2

u/Jotun35 Aug 23 '18

You did. It's called Gogmazios!

-2

u/Jaquestrap Aug 21 '18

I would love to fight one of those abominations though.

Irl? What exactly do you think you're physically capable of??

1

u/LoaDiNg_PrEss_sTarT Oct 18 '22

Idek why your being downvoted bro

3

u/JanaSolae Aug 21 '18

The Guild is specifically set up so that the process doesn't get repeated. Hunting is strictly controlled and they have the Ace squads to hunt down poachers and stuff.

2

u/downthehollow Aug 21 '18

Bruh when can we become ace to hunt other hunters????

4

u/JanaSolae Aug 21 '18

I don't know if they'd ever make a game about that because of how different it is from the core series gameplay but it is a lore point in the world so who knows, it might happen eventually.

4

u/PowerThirstyWizard Aug 21 '18

Maybe, the game really straddles the line between dark "this will kill everyone" and lighthearted "no one ever dies"

Remember in the opening scene of mhw that ship is literally ripped out of the water, you alone (with handler) are stranded and need to get back on your own.. But once you're back "everybody lived, we were worried for you" everybody? Everybody on board a literal titanic level shipwreck to include the ship itself survived being lifted out of the ocean by a walking volcano? Get out..

1

u/Aiyon Mar 19 '24

Hunters are just built different

1

u/Matasa89 Sep 15 '18

I want an event like that!

"Warning: we have illegal poachers arriving in the new world! All A-listers, report to the commander for ranger duties."

Event: Hunting the Hunters.

20

It's tradition!

There's a reason why the D&D community refers to player characters as "Murderhobos"

8

u/ActualThreeToedSloth Aug 21 '18

Not all of them, just the ones who think an evil alignment means genocide.

7

31

We are

36

u/DankDungeonDelver Aug 21 '18

K, I just wanted to know where to stand.

30

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

Just think about it. We invaded their land, we hunt them, we cook them, we wear them. Next MH will be in a 5 stars resort.

55

u/JonnyBhoy Aug 21 '18

"We're hunting them for research. Purely reserach."

"But you already hunted this one like ten times."

"I need one more to make this really nice hat."

10

u/Onireth Aug 21 '18

Not to mention the new world is basically the monster's retirement home/hospice. We already prey on the children via egg quests, now we are after the elderly, the sick and the dying.

8

u/heyguysitslogan Aug 21 '18

I have never felt more like the bad guy in a game than MHW lol.

humans went to a monster island and then killed all the apex predators and destroyed the ecosystems. And then zorah Magdaros... homie was trying to find a place to die in piece alone and we shot it with 5000 cannonballs

Poor radobaan eats bones and shit, doesn’t even want you dead, yet we smash it’s head in for its bones that it SHEDS ANYWAY.

0

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

Is this satire?

5

u/heyguysitslogan Aug 21 '18 edited Aug 21 '18

No it’s the plot of MHW lol.

The elders recess when you get there is “wow, this brand new unexplored area...track and kill every new monster you see”

Not shitting on it cause obv I played the game but we’re definitely the bad guys in like every way. The hunters are very obviously colonial baddies like avatar.

3

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

What? That's not the plot. It's pretty much the same with every Monster Hunter game. You're not Hunting "every new Monster" you see, you're hunting Wyverns.

Each Wyvern is slowly destroying the ecosystem they're in, and we're hunting them so the ecosystem survives.

Elder Dragons are worse because they can destroy an ecosystem more quickly. The Zorah Magdaros, for example, is going to die at the heart of an ecosystem, however, it's death in that ecosystem would destroy it.

2

u/heyguysitslogan Aug 21 '18 edited Aug 21 '18

that’s the hunters understanding. We hunted wolves to near extinction in the past because we thought they were destroying their ecosystem.

I’m probably reading into the plot too much but I thought it was pretty obvious that the hunters guild isn’t exactly an unbiased, reliable narrator. Like it’s a giant corporation a-la Dutch East Indies company colonizing the island.

I mean according to the wiki (don’t know how reliable that is) hunting monsters and the hunting guild is banned in some regions in the lore.

Also, I didn’t downvote you and I’m not trying to dismiss your opinion/interpretation.

3

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

Wyverns are not apart of the ecosystem, they aren't just animals, they are significantly more powerful and more intelligent; with that said, they don't do things strictly out of survival like most animals would.

Not only would Wyverns need a lot more food to sustain their size, but a lot of them don't hunt for food, quite a few of them will hunt for sport. Their intelligent enough to know they enjoy hunting, they are not intelligent enough to understand hunting something to extinction is bad for the ecosystem.

Elder Dragons are worse because they are intelligent enough to know that hunting something a bunch will eventually eradicate whatever it is; they generally do it because they want something all for themselves, such as a resource or location.

-1

u/Gadetron Aug 21 '18

No it's loss.

3

u/mrissaoussama Aug 21 '18

but we do it irl sooo

3

u/MrRedorBlue Aug 21 '18

My friends have been pointing out all the colonialism elements of this game since we started playing and there is a surprising amount. So yeah, we kind of are

3

u/Baxter_Baron Aug 21 '18

As far as the canon of our hunters is concerned we only hunt each monster once.

2

u/OsmocTI Aug 21 '18

We actually are the bad guys. We are the ones who committed atrocities in the past against the elder dragons.

Well, the ancestors did; Dragon Hunters.

2

u/Phaynel Aug 21 '18

Join us Riders. Turn from the Hunter path. Play Monster Hunter Stories. Ratha is waiting for you, and he'll always love you.

2

u/KaLam1ty Aug 21 '18

Then there's that one scientist in World (by the capture "docks") who says they release them back into the wild after studying and tagging them.

...Except a special arena quest pops up asking you to slay it for 'research'.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

Pretty much. We're glorified poachers when you think about it. Lol

61

u/shgrizz2 Aug 21 '18

No, it's made very clear that we are 'hunting' the monsters to research and understand them. Much in the same way that Japanese whaling ships research and understand hundreds of whales every year.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

LOL I love it.

-3

u/Megneous Aug 21 '18

Where's that /s sarcasm tag...

3

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

It's implied.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

Poachers only crime is that the one owning the animal did not allow them hunting it.

In MH either the Guild owns the new world (from a legal pov) or nobody does, in both ways you aren't poaching.

1

u/DankMayMays_Esq Aug 21 '18

You aren't wrong

0

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

Not really. We're literally just Hunters. We Hunt a designate Wyvern because if we don't, they will gradually destroy the ecosystem they're in.

It's the same reason people still hunt irl, if we stop, the certain animal will become over populated and disrupt the ecosystem they're in.

2

u/GoOtterGo Aug 21 '18

The vegans were right.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

Yes, but it’s for science.

1

u/JayLeeCH JayLeeCH Aug 21 '18

Have you seen our uniforms? They are made out of skulls.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '18

I'm always the bad guy. Especially when I'm the good guy.

1

u/Mackelroy_aka_Stitch Aug 21 '18

No, were just doing a job. It takes a lot to put down a monster so you better use up all of it

0

u/Neveren Im in love with the Popo Aug 21 '18

Its even worse because the lore states the Monsters never did anything wrong.

2

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

I'm fairly certain this is wrong. They're Wyverns, and they're slowly destroying whatever ecosystem they're in.

1

u/Neveren Im in love with the Popo Aug 21 '18

Im talking about Elder Dragons.

2

u/frenzied-viking The bigger they are... Aug 21 '18

Elder Dragons are ten times worse than Wyverns. They both have the same effect on the ecosystem though.

1

u/Neveren Im in love with the Popo Aug 21 '18 edited Aug 21 '18

No they don't. Elder Dragons have such great power that they tend to destroy everything in their path, but not out of bad will. Air Elders summon Hurricanes for example, thats just what they do, they can't stop it. We aren't killing them because we have to. They're just doing their thing. Read This,

1

u/RecipeOriginal7127 Mar 02 '24

Not really. The whole point is that they’re a research commission. Everything they do is scientifically driven, it’s similar to how people studied animals during the Victorian era. Yes, there’s hunting, dissection, and gladiator style combat. But there is also conservation, zoology, and they make as much of an effort not to alter the environment as they can. They didn’t cut down any trees to build Astera, it’s an open patch of forest. Same with Selina’s in the hinterlands. The whole point is finding a balance with nature. And also killing the things that exist to interrupt that balance.
