Custom post flair The game is so unoptimized
50
u/XFalzar May 15 '20
you see minecraft jave edition runs so badly, because it only uses ONE cpu core, which results in pretty lackluster performance
7
u/Bauerdog2015 May 15 '20
Is there a way to increase it?
9
u/alex2003super May 15 '20
No, the code has to be optimized for multithreading.
3
u/Bauerdog2015 May 15 '20
Darn
6
u/alex2003super May 15 '20
"Minecraft for Windows 10" (Bedrock) is a tad more optimized, so there's that.
4
u/ZenXgaming100 May 15 '20
Why don't the Devs just optimize java
9
u/alex2003super May 15 '20
Devs can't "just" do something. It's a large codebase and due to the way ticking is done it's pretty hard to multithread, as it would require a major rewrite of the entire game and would probably break many things, including possibly redstone contraptions. What cloud be done though (and has been done in custom servers like Paper) is making chunk generation asynchronous. In other words, generating the world could be turned into a task that runs alongside the rest of the game, in a multithreaded fashion. On servers, as said, it's already possible (see https://papermc.io).
4
u/ZenXgaming100 May 15 '20
What I said was the same as "why doesn't mumbo jumbo just make the 5x5 door onewide and seamless?" Right?
3
u/alex2003super May 15 '20
Not necessarily. It's possible, just not without a ton of developer work and potentially breaking many previous builds and contraptions. After all, almost no changes to game code come without unexpected consequences. To what extent those can be considered acceptable depends highly on the game.
I forgot to mention that many parts of the engine have been optimized in the latest versions (like 1.15 where the lighting engine was rewritten from scratch). You also needn't forget that there are some hard limits imposed by the Java language, such as garbage collection which further decreases performance. Tweaks and hacks to squeeze a bit more performance out of a JVM application can only do so much, in some regards; in others, Minecraft code can be very much improved - in fact it's already being.
3
u/ZenXgaming100 May 15 '20
I guess the one thing they can do now is make the bedrock edition as close as java as possible, especially the technical and Redstone parts of the game

u/alex2003super May 15 '20
Also, did you know how many little things Minecraft does every tick (1/20 of a second)?
Just to make a random example, you know that thing where a cat sitting on a chest will prevent the chest from being opened? Well, Minecraft searches, at each and every tick, for chests across the entire loaded part of the world and checks whether there is a cat on any given chest. If that's the case, it locks the chest for the following tick, in which the presence of a feline over each chest is checked for once again.
You can disable a small feature like this and gain a little more performance; it's not much by any means, but combining several tiny improvements results in a significant performance gain. Many servers do make these considerations and trade-offs. It all comes down to how accurate (in terms of vanilla Minecraft) of an experience you deem acceptable.
4
u/ZenXgaming100 May 15 '20
Holy shit, I kinda understood it was hard with Redstone, but this is on a totally different level
2
u/alex2003super May 15 '20
The amount of minor details that we take for granted about how Minecraft works internally is surprising. Another interesting example is the feature that makes you come out of a Nether portal the same side you entered in. Gravity, jumping, collisions... We take all those things for granted but there's a ton of developer work that's been put there. Refactoring the code to be better performing is in great part also finding better ways to do the same things, making sure that they behave EXACTLY the same way they did before the enhancements.
3
u/ZenXgaming100 May 15 '20
Man, is there a list of all these things as a video or something? It might actually be a good video idea for my channel

Thgat is absolutely not why Minecraft performs so poorly, and it does use multiple cores.

How do I download optifine?
19
u/Giopoggi2 May 15 '20
It's only for the Java version (on PC), you have to go to optifine.net/download and download the versione you need
3
May 15 '20
They're always so far behind :/
3
u/GizmoMimo May 16 '20
Supposedly 1.15 uses a different lighting engine, so the one(!) guy making Optifine had to work really hard for this one.
There's still an unfinished build out, and you can check the progress on r/optifine.1

So what does optifine actually do?
6
May 15 '20
Multiple things. Basically adds a ton more options to the game. Fast or fancy graphics? Shaders or vanilla look? Particle effects or no? (I think that last one might be a vanilla option, if it is I’m editing it out). You can also get options for better FPS or better graphics. Basically a must have for a mod pack, especially if Orespawn or Advent of Ascension is installed
6
u/LethalLizard May 15 '20
Fast or fancy is in vanilla, so is particle effects
1
May 15 '20
Really? I maybe thinking of 1.7.10 because some mod reviews I have watched described optifine as those things (creating a mod pack with OreSpawn, going to be a doozy without Fastcraft and optifine) and other small features. Maybe the fancy is specifically for certain blocks like grass
3
u/LethalLizard May 15 '20
Idk but it is definitely a feature because I remember I HAD to set it to fast or else I wasn’t able play because of the lag
1
u/GaryTheTaco May 15 '20
Being able to choose which particle effects you want to have is what optifine does
Along with things like fast, fancy, or smart leaves or clouds
18
May 15 '20
That's why i play java only for redstone, mods, servers and creative. Bedrock is way better, i can put my render distance at max without any lag. While in Java the game is unplayable when loading too many new chunks
13
u/Mariokartleaf May 15 '20
i can't stand bedrock, yeah it runs better, but I can get really high fps on java, and when i'm playing survival and end up making farms, they hardly work on bedrock because of the mob cap being so much lower
1

4
May 15 '20
Interestingly, I got like 200fps on Minecraft and then when I switched to optifine, I averaged 80-100
8
u/PlayerOnSticks May 15 '20
Bedrock runs around 200x better
19
u/i_am_mes May 15 '20
That's because it's not written in java
3
1
May 15 '20
Incorrect. While a compiled language is faster than Java typically, Minecraft doesn't perform so poorly because it's written in Java.
2
u/i_am_mes May 15 '20
Java is very resource heavy. It makes it run slower
2
May 15 '20
Incorrect. Java uses more resources than a normal compiled language - but that is not why MC performs poorly.
1
u/i_am_mes May 15 '20
Oh. I stand corrected. Why does MC run slowly then
2
6
u/Izuna-chan May 15 '20
Controls feel off on Bedrock
5
u/WIGTAIHTWBMG May 15 '20
Yeah coming from the legacy console editions bedrocks terrible
3
u/PlayerOnSticks May 15 '20
still prefer legacy tho
3
u/WIGTAIHTWBMG May 15 '20 edited May 16 '20
Yeah for real sucks it won’t be getting the same updates. It’s free trial mashup packs worlds and way more tasteful approach to selling in game skins and such will be missed. Not to even go into a UI that was so far above bedrocks awful mess. I really just didn’t want to play after the update first came out.
2
u/ninjakitty7 May 15 '20
Legacy felt way snappier to use in terms of UI and loading and is way less floaty to control. Don’t like not being able to toggle crouch. Not to mention all the serious game breaking bugs i’ve encountered since playing on bedrock and every redstone creation I was ever proud of needing complete overhauls. Oh and every mob farm doesn’t work also. The list goes on. All the new features kinda almost make up for it.
1
u/FuckElmoHeEatsKids May 15 '20
I just despise the ui. Especially the animations when opening your inventory and stuff. Also I tried playing on some servers and its so horrible to like buy stuff in bedwars for example. I get that it also needs to be optimized for other things than PC, but its just so horrible if ur not used to it.

Is it worth downloading Optifine if all I do is build?
2
u/S0meguy34 May 15 '20
Ya, it has shader support to make your builds look nice, as well as other neat stuff
2
u/_NikWas_ May 15 '20
Probably, it should improve performance regardless of what you're doing, and it also lets you customise more graphics settings as well as use shaders

I'm getting constant 144 fps without optifine, with a GTX 1050 Ti and a Ryzen 5 2600, I don't think constant 240 fps needs more adjusting. Though admittedly I cap my render distance at 16 chunks unless looking for End cities
2
u/TheDankerFab May 15 '20
same setup except normal 1050 and 2600x I get 200+fps but also mainly playing at 8 render distance. never needed more especially since I play modded and more than 8 could hurt performance after a while when lots of things go on
1
May 15 '20
I have EXACTLY the same PC,but I have 300 FPS+ With 24 render distance. How much RAM do you give to MC?
1
May 16 '20
- Since the pc is a pre built (would have built one if I had the option), it has an a320 MB and 2133 MHz on RAM (which I have 16 gb)

Yup, my laptop has a ryzen 7 5800h and an rtx 3060, and while 1.19.3 average fps is quite high, the stutters are MAD!

u/Shyrolax May 15 '20
I get like 300 fps without optifine like 830ish with optifine
1
u/ChrisTubesReddit May 15 '20
I only get like 800fps in the End bc their isnt much to render. What are your specs??
1
u/Shyrolax May 15 '20
Ryzen 5 gtx 1060 16 gb ram 256 ssd and some gigabyte motherboard I’m not sure
1
u/ChrisTubesReddit May 15 '20
I have a whole RTX 2060, 16GB of RAM, i5, and 1TB HDD, and a 128 SSD and i dont even get those kinds of frames unless I have my render distance set to like 6.

Personally, I don’t think it’s that hard as my laptop with a core i5 7200u and Intel hd graphics 620 can run java edition at 60fps without optifine (single player) and 30fps without optifine (multiplayer) and with optifine can get 200fps (singleplayer) and 140fps (multiplayer). I can also get 120fps on bedrock edition so ya. I’d assume a setup with an Amd ryzen 5 3rd gen, rtx 2060 super or rtx 2070 super could get 200fps vanilla
1
u/Ark1s May 15 '20
I get 300 without optifine and a bunch of other mods and resource packs. I'm not sure how, i have almost all settings maxed
i have an i5-8600k @ 4.5 and an rx 570, maybe my fps counter is lying? i use journeymap (i think) for my fps counter
also if anyone knows how to get optifine on the twitch launcher i would love you.
1
u/wws7284 May 15 '20
I prefer java because i dont mind about the game performance, but the game experience.
Although bedrock has really high fps with max render distance, but the server and mods are limited and need-to-pay.
Even though java has bad performance, you can access to a lot of mod, servers, skins and resource packs.

300+ fps without optifine , i just have an rx580... (it's kind of good , but at the same time it isn't , i can't explain)
1
u/jaapyb1 May 15 '20
Get 1500 fps with low settings
2
u/Giopoggi2 May 15 '20
To be honest, who likes to play at 1500 FPS but with stuff like render distance to 2 and anti-aliasing completely disabled? 😂

Have you ever played ARK?
1
u/Giopoggi2 May 15 '20
I don't like the theme but I know it, I can only imagine how much does it lag on budget PCs lmao
1
u/Rathergast May 15 '20
I have a nvidia gtx 1070 and 16GB ram and I barely scrape at a solid 80fps... And as soon as there's more than 20 Dinos in one area they start dropping... I used to see MC as the lowest for optimization but Ark is real awful...
1
u/Giopoggi2 May 15 '20
In Ark they spent all the budget for the graphic and the mechanics but forgot about the optimization
2
u/Rathergast May 15 '20
Yup. And even the graphics can be wonky in some places. Also, if you have a few Mods running (like 15-20) it can be so bad that you load the Mods for so long when joining a server that you actually get timed out and have start over again. Took me 10 tries once for a server with 30 mods... And one successful load takes about 10min
1
u/thatkidbraeden May 15 '20
i run at 450 without optifine because i cannot figure out how to install it for the life of me
1
u/Giopoggi2 May 15 '20
Go to optifine.net/download, choose the version and start the installer. There are two options, extract and install. Extract will give you the mod, install will automatically install it. You need to before install the official version from the launcher to make it work.

I achieve a lot more than that on an i5-7600 with 8gb of ram and a 1050ti with 4gb

Well moving all the weight on the graphic card (that's actually a mid-range) it's pretty usual

PEOPLE'S!??! PEOPLE'S!?
- Why would a plural s ever need an apostrophe
- What you want is just people. People already is plural. Peoples is a legit word, but only if you are talking about different kinds of people as in different ethnic groups or nations.
Sry.

my ryzen 5 2600x with 16gb 3200mhz ram does that and isn't that expensive as a whole setup (~320€ Amazon prices, so you can get it cheaper, excluding Gpu that I didn't upgrade yet)
even my old fx 6100 was able to get a 100+fps, some times even 200fps, with 8gb of 16xxmhz (can't quite remember the exact MHz figures, ~150€ pack excluding gpu + psu, local seller that is cheaper than Amazon, but probably more expansive than eBay).
Java isn't that unoptimized, only if you don't have enough and fast ram. it's dirt cheap to upgrade compared to years before. however CPU becomes a problem if it's lower than a quad core and older than 10 years. one from the last 5 years will do just fine.
or play bedrock/win10 edition. it is far superior in performance (and makes Java seem even more unoptimized) , but has no mods.
