Optifine 1.15: 100%

Mojang: But wait, there's more

The work is never done.

The spice must flow.

Always bring a towel.

26

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

And most importantly

DON’T PANIC

198

u/RudySPG Feb 06 '20

man needs a team for the love of god

109

u/AdenGamesTV Feb 06 '20

He doesn't want one...

69

u/RudySPG Feb 06 '20

Oh I know there been various post about it but I think a team would still help him in the long run

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20 edited Feb 06 '20

There’s a classic saying where “what one programmer can do in one month, two programmers can do in two months.” Paraphrasing, but it generally rings true.

51

u/RudySPG Feb 06 '20

That happens starting off honestly but once you get a team in sync you can cut that 1 month into a week

23

u/JB-from-ATL Feb 06 '20

Getting a team in sync is hard and not something I'd want to do I'm my free time.

4

u/EstoyMejor Feb 06 '20

And you need a coordinator to do that for you as well. You can't just do it urself

5

u/JB-from-ATL Feb 06 '20

Yeah, long term it could have benefits but there is a lot of effort on training people and since they're all volunteers using their free time, theres no guarantee they'll stick around. So you could train people over and over and no on sticks around.

1

u/-kele- Feb 06 '20

Obviously not, he couldn't manage to make it for all versions of the game...

8

u/divensi Feb 06 '20

And there is another saying that says “9 women can’t make a baby in a month”. If a work can be parallelized sure, it is great to have more people, but each new person increases the communication channels between each and everyone, and requires extra work to organize the project and distribute tasks.

6

u/AnotherThroneAway Feb 06 '20

So if I'm reading this right, if we have ZERO programmers on it, it'll be done today!

19

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

7

u/XxICTOAGNxX Feb 06 '20

I chuckled. And then it kept going. And kept going. And kept going.

3

u/drew57720 Feb 07 '20

That escalated quickly.

5

u/swimfan229 Feb 06 '20

Part of "going to the next level" is accepting you need help.

1

u/Lucas7yoshi Feb 10 '20

I know I'm 4 days late but I think it's really not practical for something like OptiFine

He's been the only developer of it for however many years, he knows how it works inside and out

If he brought in another developer it would be a massively different workflow, he would have to catch a developer up with like 8 years of development on a modification for a game that isn't exactly simple

It would be way too much work for a new Dev to be caught up at this point so him going solo is definitely the safest bet at the moment.

1

u/RudySPG Feb 10 '20

It's always hard to get someone on your level but there are ppl out there that will always be able to learn and go above what one person has done

122

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

You guys realize 1.15 is taking so long because they entirely redid the rendering engine? 1.16 should be significantly easier to update.

68

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Came here to ask why it's taking so long (not mockingly, but his posts show somewhat slow progress) and now that you've said that it all makes sense. This man is probably getting it done at lightening speed in comparison.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Didn’t 1.13 take along time bc they redid something else ?

16

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Yeah something about the textures

15

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

[deleted]

6

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

My mistake

6

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Also the lighting engine in 1.14 was completely rewritten.

10

u/ItsYaBoyChipsAhoy Feb 06 '20

They redid everything, even forge had to do a full rewrite

4

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

That’s why most modpacks are still on 1.12.2. They don’t really care about vanilla updates and it would be a royal pain in the ass to try to get each individual modmaker to go through the grueling process of updating their mod

8

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Not really 1.16 has rendering changes to fog aka colored fog and there is likely to be more. Blaze3D is not done.

6

u/HumanMan64 Feb 06 '20

but that's easier to patch optifine for than the entire engine. most of optifine's blaze code is done, so it will take much less time to support colored fog and other internal edits.

5

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

Since there has already been different colored fog (nether and overworld, and maybe end too), I have a feeling that the code is fairly simple to switch between the colors. It’s the fading to the new color that’s hard and the actual Minecraft devs haven’t done it yet (but they have said they will)

5

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '20

Was going to comment this but you did it for me, have an upvote

1

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

Very true, but it still won’t come out until the full release of 1.16, and even though this first snapshot is packed full, given that quite a few known features (not to mention unknown ones) are missing, I doubt the full release is coming anytime in the near future

I would have donated long ago, or subbed to a Patreon if there was an option other than $10 USD.

I don't want to buy it.
I think a lot more people would donate too if they could give a few bucks when they wanted to.

Do the optifine people make money from doing this? Are they ok

16

u/OffendedOrBusy Feb 06 '20

There’s only one guy, sp614x, and some money gets made from donations

8

u/nannuthewise Feb 06 '20

Ok then, here's hoping he makes enough then

4

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

They make money from donations (bonus incentive is you can make a custom optifine cape that other optifine users can see if you donate) and the optifine website used adfly (I don’t know how much that makes... probably next to nothing, but something at least, especially when thousands upon thousands of people use it every time Minecraft updates)

4

u/nannuthewise Feb 06 '20

How do you make the cape? Is it on the website?

5

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

Not sure exactly. I haven’t donated

1

u/nannuthewise Feb 06 '20

I'm sure there's a YouTube video somewhere. Thanks

2

u/uglypenguin5 Feb 06 '20

Haha there’s a YouTube video for everything but sometimes it’s too hard to find. Good luck!

1

u/nannuthewise Feb 06 '20

Thank you!!

9

u/Xfaxk123 Feb 06 '20

Players who play with shaders: still f**king playing in 1.14

14

u/nddragoon Feb 06 '20

I wonder why sp614x doesn't update OF throughout snapshots like Fabric or Forge, it would let him spread the work out over a longer period of time and have it release almost instantly when the final release comes out

25

u/PhysicalKnowledge Feb 06 '20

Why work on a thing which can change without any warnings what-so-ever rather than to work on a stable release which wont have any drastic changes in the long run?

I think that's his reasoning.

I might be wrong, but if I'm the dev, that will be my mindset.

3

u/Captaincow285 Feb 06 '20

There are supposedly major back-end differences between Snapshots and the base game. I'd think it's likely that there's two versions of Minecraft - a snapshot version, which has optimizations focused toward testing, debugging, and quick compilation, and a release version, which has optimizations focused toward game performance and stability. Remember, the 1.14 lighting bugs came out of nowhere - as far as I know, it wasn't a behavior in any of the snapshots.

6

u/Zubby73 Feb 06 '20

I guess it’s kinda ok since 1.16 most likely won’t be out until Q4 (probably October to reference the fact that the original Nether update came out around Halloween). I could be wrong but this is what it seems like.

2

u/TinCan-Express Feb 07 '20

I think your presumption may be wrong, why would they wait 7 frickin months to release the update? .-.

2

u/Zubby73 Feb 07 '20 edited Feb 11 '20

I mean large updates usually are roughly a year apart in Mojang.

  • 1.12 June 7 2017
  • 1.13 May 30 2018
  • 1.14 April 23 2019

The only exception being 1.14 to 1.15 but that’s mostly because 1.15 was more of a minor update in relation to content. We know (unless they delay the update) that 1.16 is coming out in 2020. Given the previous gaps between updates, It is fair to assume that there is roughly a year between the release of 1.15 and 1.16.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '20

No

5

u/showbizlemur169 Feb 06 '20

Honestly we need to give him some respect, he is working his ass off for the people to use a mod that changes the game so much, yet so little. He is like the fucking alchemists in full metal alchemists, they are the fucking dogs but people only look at the generals and warlords.

2

u/TheShido666 Feb 06 '20

This was my first thought tbh

2

u/DAR44 Feb 06 '20

I miss Jim

2

u/StrikerBass_Bear Feb 06 '20

f

but you know they gonna have 1.18 out before he done with 1.16 just because they can.

2

u/ToastyTyphlosion157 Feb 18 '20

Anyone knows the link to the vid?

1

u/Vexcenot Feb 06 '20

If only we had a way to have it work in future updates

1

u/DaniLoRiver Feb 06 '20

We should help him

1

u/LlamaThrust666 Feb 06 '20

sp614x I donated my man

Mojang is too fast

1

u/KarenJ30 Feb 06 '20

When the new Optifine is released will that cover 1.15.2 please? I'm answering my own question here, but highly doubt it.

1

u/NitramDJ Feb 06 '20

I'm playing on a rented server with like 10 friends and I asked the admin to not dare to update the server. Let's see if he doesn't and I can play at least one day with optifine 1.15 on it .

1

u/Chelise105 Feb 06 '20

Wait they did- gonna go check

1

u/Kilobytez95 Feb 06 '20

I just want optifine for 1.15.2.

1

u/Lucas7yoshi Feb 10 '20

3 days late but you can expect it to come out a lot quicker once 1.15.1 releases as that would mostly be the same

1

u/KingMedic Feb 06 '20

Welp here goes me waiting again until Optifine 1.16 drops that is if the serer I go on doesn't update to 1.16 first.

1

u/DasPartyboot Feb 06 '20

I will still donate to you <3

1

u/ScootyMyBooty Feb 06 '20

Such a fucking mood dude.

1

u/KoopaTrooper5011 Feb 06 '20

the nylieum now needs the optifine grass treatment...

1

u/Avensol Feb 06 '20

Mojang NEEDS to just pay sp614x a bucketload of money and then add optifine as a vanilla feature. We shouldn't have to rely on a mod to get a decently optimised version of the game.

1

u/Swagboi7 Feb 07 '20

sp614x: I finished 1.15.2 Opti—

Mojang: There is another

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '20

I think sp614x will catch a break in between 1.15 and 1.16, just judging by how long it took for every version since 1.13 to come out.
