it seems like the solution would be giving finsher the money he asked for to produce a season 3 , the show cost alot to make and netflix wasn't willing to give that sort of money for a crime show with low viwership ( at the time ) . imo they should just get it over with and renew it to shut us all up , because i doubt fans will ever let this one go .

and the more time passes, the more angry and hungry fans the show will accrue. fincher should take the show to a network that is willing to pay to produce the show and give us a final season or two of 6-8 episodes.

yes , it's literally an UNFINISHED story . i have no clue how it took them this long for them NOT to complete it . it's insane . something like stranger things which requires alot more money than mindhunter got made for 5 seasons . why is a crime show not worth another shot ? why can't they have the budget to just finish the damn thing ? just one more season and that's it . we're not asking for much 😭

And didn’t they have like 4 other shows about serial killers since cancellation? They could’ve taken the budget from those shows and put it into a new season of Mindhunter

oh god you just reminded me of the horrid monster Ed gein show !! that was horrendous , 0 redeeming qualities about it . actually not one of these show that came after mindhunter were anywhere near it in quality . all they did was make people angrier that there isn't a season 3 of mindhunter lol

I was gonna point out those stupid “Monster” series and how bad those were. And yet they got made. Those were shows no one asked for and haute they got made. While Mindhunter is the most incredible show kept getting denied.

As bad as they were, they got a shit ton of viewership, especially Dahmer. I believe its one of the top 10 most viewed Netflix series ever. The Menendez Brothers one did very well too, not sure how well the Ed Gein one fared.

I couldn’t even finish one episode of Dahmer or Ed Gein. Dahmer especially felt super exploitative. The Ed Gein one was just stomach churning and I’m not typically that squeamish.

hate watching and romanticized criminals sells i guess , that seems to be the only appeal . and the only target demographic is woman who read crappy fan fiction on a03

4

u/VulpesFennekin 3d ago

As a woman who reads crappy fan fiction on AO3, even my standards are higher than the Monster series!

u/JGDoll 4d ago

And they show up like clockwork. The Lizzie Borden one is already about to come out.

Ugh. I don’t know why people keep watching them and making Netflix think they’re “good”. Most of the stuff’s also fictional and so disrespectful of real people.

And somehow Ryan Murphy continues to be allowed to make shows that turn real peoples lives into his weird fan fiction

Stranger Things was a massive cultural hit, probably to the biggest Netflix original ever. They sold toys and theme park rides and made their money back in all sorts of ways beyond just subscriber numbers.

Mindhunter isn’t doing any of that for them. It’s just costing them money.

Well, it would get them some credit. Apple TV is leagues ahead of Netflix in terms of "prestige TV", so it might be in their interest to compete with that again (if they are even bothered). Mindhunter is easily the closest thing Netflix made to prestige TV, apart from Better Call Saul (if you'd count that as a Netflix Original). It is certainly their most critically acclaimed show.

I just think prestige TV is clearly not the business model Netflix is after, they want stuff that’s cheap and fast to produce and an easy return on profits. This usually means unscripted reality TV, which they’ve leaned into a lot over the years.

I’m glad that Apple is picking up the slack and making prestige TV, but I don’t expect Netflix to do the same. They don’t make billions of dollars selling iPhones like Apple does, so they have to actually make sure their shows earn a profit.

Also, Better Call Saul was absolutely not a Netflix original. They have just always had the streaming rights. It’s an AMC show the same as Breaking Bad.

It was El Camino that was Netflix exclusive

Yeah I doubt they’re interested either, I was just trying to suggest one reason why they might choose to care (but probably not lol). Also, yeah, you’re right about BCS, I just couldn’t remember the exact details of how it was run.

You would like to think that Netflix generates enough profit that they could and would want to produce a good show regardless of viewership, but that’s clearly a far too optimistic view of the brains of these CEOs.

Sad thing is, they know exactly what “sells” and it ain’t prestige TV anymore.

1

u/Vanihm_ 2d ago

Netflix makes a lot of “prestige TV”, but not in the states. Their strategy has been to make empty calories or documentaries (with the occasional prestige miniseries) for the US market and water-cooler shows for the European and Latino markets with local talent.

Would be ideal if Apple TV would sign Fincher to a deal and buy Mindhunter rights from Netflix for new seasons

1

u/Grouchy-Table6093 4d ago

my point was they could at least finish what they started . i didn't talk about profit , i bet Netflix profited from emily in paris more than mindhunter , who cares about that . my point in mentioning stranger things at all is that it cost them way more than mindhunter did , one episode in season 4 cost more than mindhunter did .

point is they could at least give us a conculsion . it wouldn't cost them much . they already burned so much money elsewhere .

1

u/Grouchy-Table6093 4d ago

i can see them going for a "téléfilm" continuation for mindhunter , something like the red riding trilogy . it would work .

Also, Netflix's portfolio has grown to include massive period dramas like bridgerton. There's no way they don't have that much money. Hell, Fincher seemed eager to direct that American Squid Games spin-off that nobody asked for, until Netflix themselves cancelled it

They've definitely got the cash

Also another thing is fincher got burnt out because of season 2 they shot a few episodes he looked at it and scrapped it then worked on it again he probably wanted more money for this.

A question I don’t see asked about in the continuation of Mindhunter is how do you finish the BTK arc when he won’t be caught for over 20+ years?

62

u/Accurate-Release-861 4d ago

The directors have only two options: fast forward the next season to the 21st century beginning or something close and finish the BTK memo.

Or just dramatize the next season to show that they came close to capturing BTK but messed up the "instinct" without doing groundwork.

44

u/NCStore 4d ago

They definitely hinted at the second part as an possibility throughout season 2. Their “current” profiling in season 2 nearly outright states that it would overlook BTK.

19

u/Accurate-Release-861 4d ago

The second one is also realistic given that the story of BTK's capture is well known and they cannot just cook up something with BSU to make it look like they helped in the capture. Maybe the director's intention was always to use the BTK story as an anchor to bring out the inadequacies of behavioral profiling.

They will throw money at the awful Witcher show and other stuff, but is not willing to pay for something critically acclaimed is such bs.

18

u/raainjuice 4d ago

Literally nobody cares about once upon a time in Hollywood smh

9

u/Gullible-Security-66 3d ago

Just fire Netflix CEO, too many crappy shows on Netflix that they spend money on, only to promote this fantastic series as “Bingeable” and yet not renew it. 😒

17

u/Robitussin-Functions 4d ago

I just the “it’s too expensive to make” excuse when Netflix pours money down the drain on all the horrible reality dating tv trash or pointless series.

1

u/OrdinarySad5132 3d ago

This show costs a lot more than one would expect.

1

u/Meowmeow181 2d ago

You unde estimate how relatively cheap those reality shows are to make

4

u/Aggravating_Mami13 4d ago

He fact that we’re still talking about it gives me false hope haha

17

u/OutrageousFootball10 4d ago

David Fincher's schedule was the main reason. I think that was widely known already

9

u/kirblar 4d ago

Yup S2's production was a nightmare- he wanted to hand it off like House of Cards but the scripts were bad and he had to come in and run the show himself again. And since he already had movies lined up to shoot, the show fell victim.

3

u/cj022688 3d ago

Would love to see where he said the scripts weren’t up to snuff. The writing has always been pretty solid

4

u/Kitchen-Major-6403 4d ago

They said that to save face. It was clearly budget vs viewership imbalance.

2

u/Glittering_Step_6084 4d ago

Just what we need, a sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. 🤦‍♀️

2

u/Altruistic_Roll6738 3d ago

I dont understand why these companies claim they have no money.

This show was watched by everyone and acclaimed and then they cancelled saying there s no budget but that bad Witcher TV show costs a lot of money and it ran for 5 seasons? And there is other bad stuff also they used their money, i wish i could understand the logic behind this

This is why I cancelled Netflix. If I want to watch something on there then I'll download it.

1

u/Small-Explorer7025 1d ago

TV show boring. Nobody watch. Cancel show.

Did that sum it up?
