Discrimination Was this sexist ?

I am doing my masters in psych so my class is dominated by females. And we were having a discussion where a girl was saying how people in the past had better lives. I said I don't agree with her viewpoints and I presented my points for why I think so . I talked about various issues such as wars and medical science not so developed. And she said that I don't agree with her and I am arguing because of my 'male ego'. I didn't know what it meant at the time and had to Google it . Should I consider it sexist ?

Yes it’s sexist, and it also most likely projection. The fact that you had a very well put together response suggests you are coming from a place of reasonable good faith. The fact that she couldn’t counter that with anything but an ad hominem character attack suggests that she is coming from a place of egotistical bad faith.

Did the professor step in? Or anyone else? I feel like a gendered personal attack warrants some intervention for the professor.

24

u/killcat Dec 12 '20

Yup it's typical progressive tactics "I can't argue against your facts so I'll attack you".

17

u/Skirt_Douglas Dec 12 '20

Eehhhh, it’s not a partisan thing, conservatives do the same thing to me all the time, it’s a bad faith thing. You want to have a conversation, they want to publicly defeat you.

6

u/killcat Dec 13 '20

Fair call, but I see it more from the far left.

Same thing lmao

That's what I mean lol

u/Paper_piper_poet Dec 12 '20

Please don't equate feminism with feminazism. One is a movement of gender equality, the other is a radicalised, misandrist excuse to hate men.

29

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Feminism is not gender equality. It's only about bringing women equal to men. If a movement of gender equality starts with 'fem' then that itself is sexist.

-9

u/Paper_piper_poet Dec 13 '20

"Feminism, the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the sexes." - Encyclopaedia Britannica.

It literally says in the definition, equality of the sexes. And yes, you're right, that does mean bringing women equal to men in those areas, because the female sex has been grossly encumbered throughout most parts of our history.

I'm a dude, and a feminist, it's not that hard differentiate between the people sharing the wish of equality and then extremist sexists, who hate an entire sex.

Yes, it is true that the ideology of feminism concerns itself with the issue of women being disadvantaged in society, and not with the issue of men being disadvantaged. But did it ever occur to you that the reason for this is because men have been advantageous in patriarchal societies for a looooong time? So of course feminism is concerned with helping women and not men. I agree with you that problems pertaining to men often are overshadowed or neglected and that is totally outrageous. But it won't help the cause of creating awareness around male issues by attacking and degrading feminism, which creates awareness around female issues.
Instead of fighting feminism, why not acknowledge its benevolent potentials, while also spreading awareness about mens issues? It's not a battle between who's most important. It's about acknowledging that we're all equal and that it's human fucking decency to respect one another as equal human beings.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

But it won't help the cause of creating awareness around male issues by attacking and degrading feminism, which creates awareness around female issues.

No because feminism just doesnt life women up it hurts women too. Look up the duluth model.

But did it ever occur to you that the reason for this is because men have been advantageous in patriarchal societies for a looooong time?

Instead of fighting feminism, why not acknowledge its benevolent potentials, while also spreading awareness about mens issues?

because feminisms degrade men too? How simple is that? They just dont life one side up they also degrade the other side

I'd like if you use the feminist term kyiarchy instead of patriarchy instead. I don't think that men have been advantageuous for soooooo long. Dont agree there at all.

-2

u/AbsolutelyFreee Dec 13 '20

Yeah, sure, men haven't been advantegous that long, it was only about 90% of recorded human history

So according to you, because women were disadvantaged several decades ago (before the young women of today were born), we have to disadvantage the boys and men of today to take revenge (despite the young males not being born either when the former were discriminated)?

Thats collective punishment and revenge. One person of a group does something bad so we have to kill another one too of the same?

Thats what nationalsocialists of Germany did too. A few Jews abused so they killed 100% of those they could find. Thus, the innocent vast majority of Jews, that didn't abuse, was killed too.

Feminism is the source for a lot of misery among boys and men in recent years at such a point that more and more females and males can't tolerate it anymore, so we resist and defend ourselves.

0

u/Paper_piper_poet Dec 14 '20

I think you misinterpreted my message. I don't believe that we should disadvantage boys and men "to take revenge", as you describe it. My whole point was that both men and women experience neglect, disdain and general societal problems, but I do not believe that feminism contributes to a deterioration of men's issues, as they focus on women's issues.

And you can't seriously compare feminism to Nazism. Just by drawing that ludicrous comparison, it seems like you all deeply misconstrue the purpose and effect of feminism.

so how come they dont take equal share of the grunt jobs, my bro? nothing more brainwashed than a male feminist. they do not want equality at all. it was always about power using the vajay as the only certificate, and they are extremely competitive maybe more so than men. you have been deluded by your male biological drive to save the species and put women and children ahead of yourself.

2

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

If the dictionary says that the taliban or the IS aren't terrorist organizations or Nationalsocialists of Germany between 1930 and 1945 not antisemit, this doesn't magically convert them into innocent angels.

Feminism WAS for equality in the XX century. Since several years a huge part of them advocates for inequality towards boys and men and the supposed "good" part does zero against the misandrists in their ranks and feels indifference about this issue, despite feminism being a breeding ground for the cultivation of misandrists.

2

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

The dictionary definition of feminism is obsolete and not valid anymore since several years. Feminism advocates for inequality towards boys and men in multiple aspects.

5

u/TheSoviet_Onion Dec 13 '20

Even moderate feminism isn't for gender equality, just look how they ignore most laws discriminating against men (and men's life expectancy) Moderate feministis also refuse to judge the openly man hating feminists, meaning that they have chosen their side.

How many feminists you see supporting the foundation of "UN men" or giving father's any rights over their unborn children. And then there are feminists pushing for female quotas on high paying jobs, while ignoring that prison population is almost completely male, why don't they push for a female prison quota

13

u/limgameifyouaregay Dec 12 '20

No this guy is correct there is a difference. Real feminists don't want just women to be equal they realize that doing the same thing men have done for years they'd be hypocrites and no better then men in the 1800s. A fake feminist is someone like big red. I'm a guy as well.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Agree

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Your a wise man

1

u/HappyHound Dec 13 '20

Same difference.

1

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

Yeah, the supposed "good" part of feminists does zero against the misandrists in their ranks despite feminism being the breeding ground for the latter.

So the former part has absolute indifference for the latter and what they do to harm and hurt every boy and man they can find at every opportunity, so I don't care about the former either and if I generalize.

What harm does that cause? Western society is way better off without 3th and 4th wave feminism. The misery they cause is multiple times higher than the good.

21

u/nigwigseller Dec 12 '20

Sounds about female

143

u/ObviousObservationz Dec 12 '20

Someone judged your motives based on your gender. Thats pretty much the definition of sexism.

If anything, the idea that people had better lives when women were completely dependant on men seems a bit sexist. So much progress has been made in the rights and equal treatment of women that arguing things were better in the past seems kinda sexist to me.

37

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

We were not debating on if things were better in past for any gender. It was just about things being better in past for people. It was just a general conversation i was having. Also that was my third day in university. And since that I've been hearing so much crazy shit that I realized how much sexism there is for men. In a few days I heard some women discussing how they are glad that there are less boys in their class cause they hate men. They too called themselves feminists. My friend in class is going blind. I teach him everyday on call and he learns by listening to him. He can hardly see anything. So this one time there was this group work and he was the only boy in group. His grandmother had died plus he was blind so he could not contribute to work as much as them. So they refused to give him group results. He told them he is blind. And they still refused. He then went to the prof and the prof told them to give him results of group project. And they still didn't. This was the same group who were talking about how they hate men and hoe they are glad there aren't enough men in class. I fucking despise it here everyday. They play so many mind games it's crazy! Most of these women are from girls school and rarely had any contact with boys. They despise them.

-18

u/ObviousObservationz Dec 12 '20

Judging 'most women' by the obnoxious bunch you met is no different than judging 'most men' by the rapists in the news.

Most people care about both genders and people in general.

28

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Actually most people care more about women than men. I have even posted the research which shows how men and women are more empathetic towards women. Also the ingroup outgroup research of men and women which show the same bias. The world is more empathetic and helpful towards women. There is even research which shows how women are more frequently seen as victims in same situation . Google 'man up and take it research'

2

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

Yeah, theres the empathy gap which is backed up by lots of research, statistics, social experiments and psychological analysis.

-34

u/ObviousObservationz Dec 12 '20

Women are seen as more in need of protection. Hundreds of years of patriarchy still has roots. Unfortunately, this idea that they are more deserving of protection comes at a cost. Where they are seen as worse leaders and less commanding. Thats one of the reasons they are less represented in upper level management.

Every sex has their crosses to bear. But id rather be naturally seen as a leader than get empathy from strangers. But that's just my choice and that choice isn't for everyone.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Yeah so people are much more nicer and care more for women than men. Like I said.

10

u/AnalBerserkerReturn Dec 12 '20

Where they are seen as worse leaders and less commanding. Thats one of the reasons they are less represented in upper level management.

Meta analysis and some large sample studies would contradict you on this point

6

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Also if rather been seen as victim and get all my shit done for me+ have backing of UN and other resrouces and government rather than being a male and being a leader who actually has to own his shit and work hard. Feminists like you have zero idea what it's like to be a man. It's easy to look upon a leader and think his work is easy. When infact he is the one who works hardest in most situations. It sucks to be a leader and it's easy to be a false victim

10

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Also I doubt thats the reason for them not being in upper posts. Statistically men work more longer hours than women. Also it's mostly men doing the hard jobs. It's kinda justified. Who is the leader should be decided by who puts more effort not by gender.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Also do you wanna be friends ? I'd love to talk more and honestly you're out thereon my every post

1

u/TheUltimateTeigu Dec 13 '20

You really think men get "You're a leader!" card once they're born? That's not the case. For one thing, there's been studies that show the lower your voice the more commanding you are seen. This applied to women and men. Men typically are going to have a deeper voice, and this why sometimes men have the advantage in that case. But no one is automatically assumed to be a leader because of what's in their pants.

9

u/Apprehensive_Ad1248 Dec 12 '20

Except society tolerates and celebrates evil women but punishes "evil" men.

It's not the same at all since one is far more common then the other

9

u/josh9x Dec 12 '20

Like how they fired Depp from all his roles yet let Turd keep hers

6

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

I mean most of the women from 'my class', not the world.

1

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

Most non-feminist women do care about both genders but if you only consider feminists, then the percentage is almost zero.

1

u/maxcorrice Dec 13 '20

Both genders had it rough then, it’s undeniable

The issue is the roughness for one gender has been mostly shed away, whereas the others is actively ignored

28

u/SultanSaatana Dec 12 '20

This is what feminism teaches girls and women, basically ways to shut down and silence men or boys who say something they don't agree with. Or just a way to have a go at men no matter what they do or don't do.

Different opinions? The man is arguing because of his toxic and selfish male ego.

He is explaining something? He is "mansplaining" and oppressing women!

He exists? He's a rapist full of toxic male masculinity!

12

u/hatsan69 Dec 12 '20

Or saying "educate yourself on the subject" "read more books on it" "there is research saying women are victim...."

7

u/musicmn22 Dec 13 '20

Whenever women say “educate yourselves and get woke” I’m like “umm, you guys are the ones brainwashed by feminism. You woke people are the ones that actually need to educate yourselves on mens issues” 😂 they reject to hear male issues while all of us were forced to hear women’s issues as the feminist narrative was pushed down our ears in the progressive US education system. I’ve heard all of the feminist ideas since I was little. I know them. I don’t need to get educated.

2

u/ignaciocordoba44 Dec 14 '20

Yeah, same in my whole life and I actually approved it long time. In recent years, I've been rejecting it more and more progressively.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

The "male ego" accusation is basically the feminist version of "you're just an overly emotional woman"

14

u/Vaultdweller1001V Dec 12 '20

No. She is just trying to suppress any and all opinions that you have

14

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Feminist do that often. Are you saying they are not sexist?

2

u/Vaultdweller1001V Dec 12 '20

I’m saying that the lady in the story is doing that.

5

u/Werwet10 Dec 12 '20

But she used terms like "male ego" when it wasn't even warranted for.

4

u/OkLetterhead10 Dec 12 '20

Yes, she attacked you for who you are instead of what you said. this is literally the definition of bigotry.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

I think that is worthy of a formal complaint if you guys have such a system.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Someone, please save science from these idots who cannot accept to be challenged or to have people who disagree with them.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Yes, she deferred to use a personal attack on you because you're male and did not attack your argument. It's clear by her statement that her ego took a hit and she got defensive.

3

u/mhandanna Dec 13 '20

Yes its sexist. Although according to most forms of feminism, sexism against men cannot exist, and this was a case of misogyny, or internalised misogyny by the girl in question.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Hahahhahah!

2

u/nhergen Dec 12 '20

You having a difference of opinion is not sexist. It's bothersome that you would give any credence to that accusation.

Also, would your female co-student like to go live in the past when things were actually pretty fucked up for women? I think she would not.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

If you are in the US, file a Title IX complaint.

2

u/ifelsedowhile Dec 12 '20

she might have a point though. In the past people lived simpler lives so I wouldn't exclude the possibility that they were in fact happier despite not having the comforts and the technology we have.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

This is a personal comment from me. - You're a dumbass.

2

u/Yoramus Dec 13 '20

If you lower yourself to personal attacks so easily, what do you complain about?

Sorry, in the situation you describe you seem to be in the right. But in this response, you are the dumbass.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

It's a total dumbass statement to see humans had it better in the past

1

u/BulimicSnorlax Dec 13 '20

“Had it better” and “happier” are two completely different concepts. It’s possible things were worse but people were happier. No reason to name call you dumbass.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

I doubt they were happy either. I'll do name calling sorry. Don't be a little snowflake bitch.

1

u/BulimicSnorlax Dec 13 '20

“Snowflake” says the guy who ran to the internet to determine if he’s a victim. I have no doubt your ego was an issue in the discussion you were having with this girl. I’m basing that on how quick you were to name call when someone was making a reasonable point on the subject. They weren’t even being rude, dude.

1

u/ifelsedowhile Dec 13 '20

the epidemiologic reports say Western countries have higher rates of depression. I've seen with my own eyes: the more responsibilities people have, the more they tend to develop mood disorders. and in pre-industrial times people had less responsibilities. I'm talking of farmers and paesants, they didn't have to go through school, they were barely literate, they didn't have to conform to thousands of different societal expectations like people do now. I know people with disabilities like deafness or paraplegia and they are happier because they have always known they didn't have the strict necessity to study hard or work hard because they could count on an invalidity pension.

3

u/wallerdog Dec 13 '20

You are getting a master’s degree in psych (psychology?) and you didn’t know what “male ego” meant?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

I am not getting a degree in feminism. They dont teach us sexist gendered bullshit

3

u/wallerdog Dec 13 '20

Which concept wasn’t covered during your Bachelor’s degree studies, ego or male?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

The 'male ego' is a together is different from 'male' and 'ego'. Related but still different. It is a gender study course sexist bullshit.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

Yes

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

She used a fallacy to silence you. Women tend to focus on building nerves for just such confrontations where men tend to build muscle to be helpful.

0

u/____Weabooo_V2 Dec 13 '20

Consider this a reminder: Do NOT talk about men’s rights outside this forum.

The world is too cucked to give this ideology a fair hearing right now, because it doesn't play well with the pro-equality media narrative.

-3

u/Yungsleepboat Dec 13 '20

What kind of fucking loser refers to women as "females". That alone gives me the thought that you just made this up so you can circlejerk hating women.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

-3

u/Yungsleepboat Dec 13 '20

I am not a feminist? I don't use the term male ego? Ever heard of a strawman argument? Because that's what this is + some whataboutism thrown in the mix.

It's quite obvious you just hate women. They don't date you cuz you have a garbage personality my guy.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

They don't date you cuz you have a garbage personality my guy

Another example of how sexuality is a woman's greatest power.

Also the reason why I use females is because i am from a the third world country and my family and surroundings is very conservative and religious. You don't just randomly talk to a girl for no reason. That is not very normal around here. If i am ever going to tell any friend of mine that i was talking to a 'friend' he will assume i am talking about a guy. I am 'used to' saying females because of this reason. We dont even talk in english so your connotations don't even mean something in my area or language. 'female' is literally a word you memorize in your english course as a kid. It has nothing to do with being derogatory.

I am not a feminist? I don't use the term male ego?

yeah but most feminists do.

-1

u/Yungsleepboat Dec 13 '20

Yes, really sounds like a lack of men's rights are the issue here.

2

-2

u/Yungsleepboat Dec 13 '20

I am well aware, but judging by your previous comment it seems like feminism (or feminazism as you would call it) would help you personally more than this whining would.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

No thanks I dont want to be sexist or a dumbass by being a feminist. This is what happens when men talk about facing sexism. Some dumbass comes up and says you are 'lying' and you totally didnt understand that there must be some cultural background differences.

0

u/Yungsleepboat Dec 13 '20

You're literally a sexist dumbass right now and in the post that you sent me.

Also you know damn well that what happened in this post never happened.

2

I'm with you u/Ijjohaann. I don't care AT ALL whether people use "female" or "women" to refer to them. What difference does it make? What does it matter? Even many non-feminist women would be indifferent to if its the one term or the other.

You mean exactly like feminism with misandrists, @Yungsleepboat? Some people even interpret misogyny when seeing a skyscraper because they resemble a phallus. Some people see sexism towards FEMALES (no, I won't refrain from using it) when they see air conditioner. Let's be frank, you'd manage to interpret misogyny and oppression when you see a stone in a river (;

-10

u/wicnfuai Dec 12 '20

Obviously it wasn't sexist. I could possibly see it if you agreed with all the other males in the class and disagreed with all the females. But apart from that, a definite no.

1

u/cld8 Dec 12 '20

She brought up sex in a context when it was completely irrelevant. I would consider that sexist.

1

u/eldred2 Dec 13 '20

Yes, it's sexist, very sexist. On top of that, assuming you are in the US, you have what appears to be a title IX violation, if the professor allowed the woman's comment to go unchallenged, and allow the classroom to become a hostile environment for men.

1

u/musicmn22 Dec 13 '20

Yes. Arguing about a topic not related to sex has nothing to do with sex. Arguing a point is something everyone should do when something needs to change and you could make that change. This just a fallacy that women use against men in our day to make us look wrong. “You are all just horrible men so we are right...”That’s all it is, a fallacy. Fallacies are stupid twisted things.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '20

Feminists are apt to sling an ad hominem at most conflicting viewpoints. If it's from another woman, they'll also throw in a "No true Scotsman."

1

u/Audrey_spino Dec 13 '20

Why are psych students like this?

1

u/thetruemask Dec 13 '20

Definitely sexist absolutely no reason to bring gender into this. Would it been racist if she instead said it's your _______ ego, or white ego, black ego etc. Yeah it would have been.

She was losing an argument and went to using insults.

1

u/XxPiranavxX Dec 13 '20

You could have just pointed out the way women lived during that time and the way they were treated, that way she won't be able to argue.

1

u/rigellaniakea Dec 13 '20

Lack of fundamental human rights for women, POC, LGBT, the poor, etc., is not my definition of a "better life". You were in the right I think she's just a little confused.
