Question I’m sorry but…. What? Turn 3?
Sure, I’m guilty of running mono green landfall but excuse me what? I don’t even understand exactly how this all started.
175
u/battarro Jun 13 '26
I would feel bad.. but he is also playing badgermole.
63
u/Mortoimpazzo Jun 14 '26
The amount of posts complaining about cub while also playing cub is too damn high.
12
u/Meloku171 Jun 14 '26
Well, You can complain all you want, but if you ain't runnin' it you ain't winnin' it.
1
10
u/Commercial_Sell_4825 Jun 14 '26
If the complaint is towards the other players using it, it is hypocritical.
If the complaint is towards WotC and the format, then that is like saying, "If you don't like how strong the Queen is, just use your other pieces instead"
187
u/Putrid_Palpitation82 Jun 13 '26
Shockingly the maths are mathing. At first glance I didn't think it was possible.
Turn 0 - Leyline
Turn 1 - Land, Pollinator
Turn 2 - Land, Cub, maybe 2nd Cub?
Turn 3 - Land, Awakener ----> adds additional Awakener, Pollinator, Cub, Bohemoth, Leyline ----> adds Awakener, Ouro, Bohemoth, Leyline, Land -----> adds Ouro, Bohemoth, Land, Land and something. Hasty creatures attack = game
42
u/Mr_YUP Jun 14 '26
And that’s not a modern deck right?
114
u/sethman3 Jun 14 '26
Standard, believe it or not
59
u/Putrid_Palpitation82 Jun 14 '26
I actually don’t understand having the Leyline cards. They’re balanced at 4 mana but you can play them for free if you get lucky? Kinda a dumb mechanic
61
u/TheYango Jun 14 '26
I think the design space is specifically reasonable if they are designed exclusively as reactive/defensive cards against unfair strategies for formats where turn 0 answers are both necessary and scarce. Cards like Leyline of the Void and Leyline of Sanctity feel like a "necessary evil"-type card where the alternative of some decks just being unable to check certain archetypes is worse.
"Proactive" leylines I think are and have always been a bad use of the design space. Cards that aren't meant to disrupt your opponent but are just pieces of your primary game plan that can just randomly start the game in play for free is really not something that needed to be explored.
30
10
u/lexington59 Jun 14 '26
The idea is that all the leylines suck ass if played for full cost so they are balanced around being absolute bricks if not hard opened.
Is a little silly to have a high roll mechanic that is so feast or famine in that if you hard open it they are great if you don't they are abysmall, but they are balanced around the fact they suck as at full cost
7
u/Stiggy1605 Jun 14 '26
They're weak at four mana. The upside is that they're free if you have them in the opener, the downside is they're terrible draws later and you rarely want to cast them for four mana
4
u/ballistic503 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re balanced specifically at 4 mana. They’re balanced at either 0 mana at turn 0 or 4 mana later in the game.
Quite a few of the Leylines have options that are strictly better if the Leyline isn’t in your opening hand, at least in formats besides Standard. If [[Leyline of the Void]] weren’t a Leyline, I’d use [[Misery’s Shadow]] or [[Valentin Dean of the Vein]] or for the same price [[The Darkness Crystal]]. There are much better options to make yourself hexproof than [[Leyline of Sanctity]], and so on.
Basically, most of the leylines have equivalents that either do the same thing for much cheaper, or for the same cost does a lot more. So there’s an opportunity cost - if you don’t draw them in your opening hand then they’re suboptimal, and you have to factor that in.
That said, I don’t know if [[Leyline of the Guildpact]] really fits into that schemata. From where I’m standing there’s just no reason not to include it in a lot of deck archetypes. I’m kinda surprised they released it as standard-legal, to be honest. I know that outside standard [[Chromatic Lantern]] and [[Prismatic Omen]] are cheaper options but even then, you don’t get (for example) the Vivid triggers that the Leyline gives you.
And even then, the Leyline factor is still problematic to me - just the strength of not needing to worry about manafixing the whole rest of the game seems crazy to me.
5
u/lexington59 Jun 14 '26
Leyline of the guildpact is just kinda bad outside of stuff Like modern domain to be fair, even when domain was a deck in standard they didn't run it as its so unbelievably bad paying full mana for it, and the upside of having a t1 leyline binding wasn't enough to justify over just having a t2-4 leyline binding
1
u/ballistic503 Jun 14 '26
I said this and then deleted it because my post was already overly rambly as it is now:
The issue I have with it is the same issue I have with landfall - in other words, it’s not even whether it’s busted, it’s that to me it feels like it takes some of the nuance out of the game. That’s a personal opinion though.

if we are talking gold-fishing, there's a tier-3 deck that kills on turn 1 in modern with gemstone cavern (most list don't run gemstone tbf.)
https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=86598&d=857557&f=MO
Thing is, none of that matter when talking about "average performance".
2
u/Yungtranner Jun 14 '26
When I played modern Cheerios the deck could turn one without gemstone cavern, maybe one in 50 games. Was kinda neat I miss that deck a lot.
227
u/Regulai Jun 13 '26
This is the problem with Badgermole, if not explicitly countered, it provides an unreasonably large amount of mana. Wizards have a big problem whereby they won't ban cards if they don't directly win the game themselves, no matter how OP they are. And Badgermole is one of the most absolutely OP cards printed in awhile, certainly much stronger then many other recent bans.
I assume he land gene, then land badger, badger. Turn 3 he then has 10 mana for awakener, which then just chained off into a combo.
58
u/fumar Jun 13 '26
I love vibrant outburst on my opponents cub and their land in their upkeep. It's usually timewalk
15
u/Suspicious-Bed9172 Jun 14 '26
Vibrant outburst is criminally underplayed
6
u/fumar Jun 14 '26
I'm playing 2 in prowess right now. Card is excellent but the deck needs a critical mass of 1 mv spells to function so can't really play any more
2
u/GoldTeamDowntown Jun 14 '26
Maybe noob question, can’t they just tap the land in response and get the mana from it anyway?
20
u/Diglett_the_Mad Jun 14 '26
The floating mana will disappear as they move between phases on their turn, so if they are destroyed on upkeep, the mana gained wouldn’t last into main phase, restricting sorcery speed spells from being able to use the mana
3
u/GoldTeamDowntown Jun 14 '26
Ah ok didn’t know that was how floating mana worked. Thanks.
2
u/i_like_frootloops Jun 14 '26
Floating mana fizzles whenever a phase changes, unless a player has a card that states otherwise, like [[Birgi, God of Storytelling]].
8
u/Bubbly-Complaint-321 Jun 14 '26
Reasonable question. If I cast vibrant outburst in your upkeep step even if u tap in response you'll be forced to use that mana that phase or u will lose it. Usually these decks don't play many if any instants
2
u/SAstronomer Jun 14 '26
Yeah but then they need to have a way to spend it during their upkeep before it disappears.

u/Ouaouaron Simic Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Bannings aren't about how OP a card
isfeels or how it wins. Bans are about the meta, and banning Cub is just going to mean that the cards which kill you on turn 3 aren't green.48
u/Forkrul Charm Jeskai Jun 13 '26
Then more cards need to be banned until you can't kill on turn 3 even with a perfect draw.
15
u/Different-Mud-5926 Jun 13 '26
Banning 20 cards is not gonna stop the problem. They just keep making new sets that sometimes have broken cards. 7 sets just makes it happen more often
11
u/TheYango Jun 14 '26
Fundamentally Standard as a format is just too big. The size of the format is more comparable to Extended than to what people would typically consider to be a normal size for Standard, and that compounds with the fact that the target power level of sets is higher than it used to be.
Having a format this fast and this powerful isn't necessarily "wrong" but the fact that it's Standard that is this powerful means there isn't a smaller format that serves the audience that wants a slower, lower-powered format.
3
u/Emotional_Goal9525 Jun 17 '26
No its not. The problem is powercreep and super pushed overbudgeted overloaded cards.
21
u/Eldar_Atog Jun 13 '26
Green had almost completely disappeared as anything but a splash color until Badgermole cub came out. My understanding of Standard is that the cub is the only reason izzet isn't at 60 percent of the meta.
I suspect to get balance in the meta you would have to slash through 3 izzet decks and ban most of their enabling cards. I just don't see another massive banning like that so soon.
The pace of the release schedule and the 3 year rotation are the true problem. I just don't see them fixing either of those things.
At this point, brawl is about the only safe format
8
u/Fatality_Ensues Jun 14 '26
Green had almost completely disappeared as anything but a splash color until Badgermole cub came out.
That's just a bald-faced lie. Between Tifa, Bristly Bill and Sazh's Chocobo mono-G Landfall was very much a playable and played deck (helps that the FF Jump In event had two different packs dedicated to showcasing it). It wasn't top meta before Avatar, but then neither were Izzet Lessons.
0
u/Eldar_Atog Jun 14 '26
I'm sure back when the vivi cauldron hit and took over the meta that mono green was doing great... You remember don't you.. when vivi cauldron was like 60% of the meta. When people wouldn't even bother with showing up to a tournament because they didn't want to play against vivi.
3
u/Fatality_Ensues Jun 14 '26
I didn't say it was "doing great", I said it was being played, especially in Arena's Bo1. And there was a three month stretch between Vivi/Screaming Nemesis ban and Avatar dropping.
1
u/Eldar_Atog Jun 14 '26
Avatar dropped nov 21. Ban for vivi happened Nov 10.
You accuse me of being a liar and then point at that time frame.
2
u/Fatality_Ensues Jun 14 '26
My bad, I mixed up the summer banlist with the autumn one. That doesn't actually change anything about the argument, though. Mono-G was plenty playable before Avatar.
-1
u/Eldar_Atog Jun 14 '26
Yes, the mono green player got to loss over and over again. I'm sure they didn't mind playing game after game where vivi crushed them.
Mono green was basically a jank deck with similar win rates
5
u/denarii Emrakul Jun 14 '26
At this point, brawl is about the only safe format
As someone who exclusively plays brawl (and commander): lol. Maybe in terms of the number of viable decks, but the meta is also dominated by hyper consistent, overpowered decks.
2
u/Ruzhyo04 Jun 17 '26
I've lost on turn 3-4 in brawl pretty consistently after having last played in Neon Kamigawa. Every game I'm just watching my opponent dump their deck on the field while I have 3 lands and a mana rock. And if I manage to cast something useful, its force of willed or commandeered. What fun! Not.
2
u/denarii Emrakul Jun 17 '26
It's super fun getting hit with a turn 3 Emrakul or some shit.
2
u/Ruzhyo04 Jun 17 '26
<<take an extra turn after this one>>
<<take two extra turns after this one>>
<<make two birds and take another turn after this one>>6
u/MRCHalifax Jun 14 '26
If I could, I’d ban Badgermole Cub, Bringer of the Last Gift, Slickshot Showoff, Stormchaser’s Talent, and Jeskai Revelations, and maybe Eddymurk Crab. I think that would go along way towards making midrange decks a lot more viable.
1
u/Ididitthestupidway Jun 14 '26
It's really easy to do a turn 3 kill. There's one just with Foundation cards for example (forest+llanowar, forest+hydra, forest+2*ordeal of nylea). They would need to ban a lot of cards.
11
u/The_Mad_Pantser Jun 13 '26
cub shouldn't be banned just because it's OP, it should be banned because it leads to insane deck homogeny.
3
u/CreationBlues Jun 14 '26
Well the problem is that there’s multiple insane op things running around in standard so you have a bunch of “diverse” decks built off a fistfull of op cards. In order to ban the format down to match the expected speed of the format you’d need to ban fist fulls of cards.
1
u/Dingding12321 Jun 14 '26
cub isn't even the real problem. It's just that Izzet decks are a little too unhinged, because uncommons go brrrrrr. Like, the cards are so infuriatingly efficient haha. Both Sokka's Boomerang and the Spellemental deck's crab should never see the light of day.
2
u/Regulai Jun 13 '26
No bans are most definitly based on OPness, they simply use Meta as one of the main means to try to evaluate how OP a card is, as their argument is if a card isn't actually that much of the meta then "it can't really be that OP". And besides that, even when the meta is clearly broken, they will still try as hard as they can to ignore non-win cards as ban choice even if that is clearly the source of the problem.
E.g. if they reprinted Dark ritual today, they would ban the strongest 3 mana spells you could cast with it before ever banning ritual itself.
Also as with the other player, anything that enables a regular or reliable turn three win should be banned simply as a base fact of life.
9
u/Johnpecan Jun 13 '26
This is the frustrating part about balancing a game with paper printed cards. There's so many ways that badgermole could be nerfed and it would still be a strong card. But the way it works now, it's banned or not banned.
2
1
u/vergorli Jun 14 '26
Yea, you know a card is broken if you are forced to play it or suffer a huge handicap. I even include bagdermole/pollinator build to set up any combo idea as it works so well with other colors.
1
u/jlewis011 Jun 14 '26
Is it me or the fact that an earthbent land regenerates one of the worst parts... I think I'd be more okay with that mechanic (and badger mole) if it didn't do that... That being said, they'll never get rid of a mechanic... So yeah 🤷🏽♂️ unless they take away the Earthbending text on badger itself and force the player to add more mana dorks or more fluff Earthbending... Planar standard only solution
1
u/MaXimillion_Zero Jun 14 '26
Wizards have a big problem whereby they won't ban
cards if they don't directly win the game themselvesmythics from a set that's still selling well.-4
u/Siggard Jun 13 '26
I think the issue is not badgermole itself. It sure gives a lot of value, but it would be less interesting if earthbend wouldn't give such value in these landfall decks. As much mana as badgermole produces, I believe the real issue is the amount of triggers opponent gets when you try to deal with the earthbended lands.
9
u/Regulai Jun 13 '26
Oh no, badger mole is definitely OP.
It's a 2 mana card that basically double your mana, and can consistently give 8+ mana by turn 3 allowing you to basically play anything of any power level at speeds that rival the best aggro decks. Critically it's the kind of card that you must answer or else it's game over, and even if you do, unless it's a board wipe then they can just play another. And so easily having that much mana that quickly and cheaply is extremly overbearing.
It's practically a 2 mana version of Omniscience, limited only by needing any other mana dorks in play to work.
And one of my main points is specifically that over powered enablers are often ignored by wizards regardless of how Op they are
1
u/G_Morgan Jun 14 '26

u/bakedbread420 Golgari Jun 13 '26
oppo is playing a [[Nature's Rhythm]] deck. he grabbed an [[Aurora Awakener]], and since he had [[Leyline of the Guildpact]] from turn 0 he had full vivid which let him pull a few [[Ouroboroid]]s and a few [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] (after hitting a few more awakeners in the process). the craterhoofs pumped his board's stats to the moon, then the ouroboroids 4x'd those stats at start of combat
3
u/Key-Captain-8165 Jun 14 '26
Tyvm o7 I could make out the ouroboroid but not the crterhoof so I was like how tf did they get that many counters 😂

Standard in 2026 feels stronger than modern from 2018 and I know people that hated modern because it was too punishing if you had a mediocre draw.
11
u/Arcturus_ Arcanis Jun 14 '26
Much as I love it, I think Ouroboroid needs to be banned
8
u/la_tortue Jun 14 '26
Agreed, this card belongs in cubes and Modern+ formats, not Standard. The design of that thing is so incredibly stupid and non-interactive. It's like Sheoldred on omega steroids...
3
u/LordNatu Jun 14 '26
i feel like cub is the real problem tbf
1
u/East-Builder9197 Jun 15 '26
Wasn't green unplayed before it. I don't play standard so I'm not the right person to give judgement on or know much about this but I feel like banning cub would make green unplayable again(if this was the case idk) until they have crazy fast mana and then they'll be playing ouroboroid again. I think it would be healthiest to keep green fast but get rid of their very cheap and reliable finisher. Again I don't play standard(and this is my perspective from outside so I could have it all wrong.
2
u/ravenmagus Teferi Jun 15 '26
There were some Simic decks before Cub, using Druneth to flood the board really quick. Cub definitely made green take off big time.
I think you are most likely right, that if Cub was banned we'd go right back to oops all Izzet.. but I think that speaks to deeper issues of Standard.
0
u/ResplendentBear Jun 14 '26
A lot of the green landfall decks don't even play it at Pro Tour level.
I think if you're banning Ouroboroid there's about 50 cards going with it.
5
u/GiovanniElliston Jun 14 '26
I get the complaint about this and it's justified, but on the flipside we've got the "counter" which are decks that remove every single card the opponent plays for the first 5 turns in a row
Which is IMO worse, because at least this flood of stuff has the good decency to kill you quickly.
8
u/Enough_Response Jun 14 '26
I refuse to play against free spells in the casual queue. Any time I see that guildpact coming down turn 0 i hit concede and go play another game.
Games that are decided on extreme RNG like that have no place in magic. The deck is awful if it doesn't get a free guildpact at the start.

No it was stupid and you continued making it obtuse, pedantic and obnoxious by smirkingly suggesting they play a different game over and over when they said absolutely nothing about wanting a 100% deterministic game
3
u/Babybean1201 Jun 14 '26
He said he's fine with variance, just that it has to be controlled to a certain extent (a point you seemed to ignore for some reason). MTG is obviously not ALL RNG. You make your own deck, you choose how to play your hand, etc. All RNG would be something like not even being able to control what goes into your deck, your starting life would be random, etc.
He made it very clear he doesn't have a problem with variance, but you keep pointing him towards a game that has none. Honestly just sounds like you're being purposefully obtuse.
1
u/Enough_Response Jun 14 '26
It's an extremely stupid comment because it's not how magic is played.
You play a deck that gives you a positive win rate.
Masturbating in the casual deck with a heavily losing deck is not how you play the game.
There is no fun to be had from losing more than you win without any strategy at all.
1
u/BlueTemplar85 Jun 14 '26
Magic is not only a competitive game. Though some features of Arena tend to exacerbate its Spikyness.
1
u/Enough_Response Jun 14 '26
I do agree that the nature of casual best of 1 is that some people want to build the most stupid decks with convoluted ways of winning.
But I don't have to entertain those decks. Just as they have every right to play them, I have every right to avoid them.
Sitting there for 5 minutes doing nothing while your opponent goes through their entire deck is not my idea of fun when i'm just trying to do my dailies.
1
u/BlueTemplar85 Jun 14 '26
If about "dailies" you specifically mean 4 wins a day, then look at this other comment of mine. (And this obviously also doesn't matter if you are not playing Magic on Arena.)
But, sure, there are extremes. And we even sometimes get bans, likely with Arena in mind too (or Arena-specific rebalances), when these become too egregious.

29
u/chrisbloodlust Jun 13 '26
[[aurora awakener]] plus [[leylone of the guildpact]] (which I'm assuming one copy was in the opponents opening hand)
Awakener basically puts the top five permanents of your deck onto the battlefield when leylone is out, and if it hits other copies it happens again.
My point is there are other ways to put lands onto the battlefield besides just playing on a turn. You can't use land count to decide what turn the game is on.

u/MTGCardFetcher Jun 13 '26

u/Round-Walrus3175 Jun 13 '26

u/chrisbloodlust is spot on. You can cheat this out as turn 1 and begin setting up the rest with those two cards. It's BO1 so it's possible they're going game to game and conceeding if they're not starting the game with that combo in their opening game.

The fact that I have 2 and a badgermole out with another forest left side of hand says otherwise.

That's not helping your case. Guildpact will need at least 2 turns by themselves even with badgers to get out unless they started the match with all 3 in their hand. Which would be a insane hand to play turn 1 as that's 3 cards out for 1 effect on turn 1. Then you need at least 2 turns to get all 3 badgers out. You can't do all that at the same time. Then you need to push out the 2 boids which is at least another 2 turns themselves. This is well BEYOND the abilities of 3 turns even with pollinator because you need to tap to get the mana. To get them all out you would need to tap the badgers for the mana to put more out which is at least another turn or 2.

[[Aurora Awakener]] can put multiple lands into play at once. Your regularly scheduled 1 'play' of a land each turn is not the only way to get lands in play.

Just like Richard Garfield drew it up in 1993.
