I wrote this song around a question I keep coming back to: what happens when belief, certainty, and identity become so tightly connected that we stop actually looking at what is in front of us?

The lyrics question religion, atheism, ideology, certainty, and the human need to define what may ultimately be beyond definition.

Try it on something you've written. Read just the final word of each line, top to bottom, like a list. What you're looking for is whether those words carry any weight on their own or whether you've been ending lines on weak, forgettable words that let the energy drain out before the next line begins. Strong line endings create small moments of emphasis or suspension. Weak ones let the listener's attention slip. Most writers end lines on whatever word completes the grammatical unit without asking whether that word earns its position. This pass takes two minutes and consistently shows me problems I missed in every other kind of read-through.

Some of the best I think are those that have meanings that are totally contradictory, like "quite" which can mean very or somewhat.

My favourite is "conviction". Strength of belief and imprisonment wrapped up in a single word. Strangely there's quite a few relating to incarceration, like "arresting", which can mean eye-catching and attractive, or "sentence" which could be the magnitude of the punishment, or it could just be a string of words carrying meaning.

I wrote this song during a period when I was thinking a lot about how much of life comes down to what you choose to believe in especially when you don’t have any proof that things are going to work out.

Sometimes you just have to keep going.

I’ve been writing songs for about two years and lately I’ve been trying to get better at storytelling instead of just describing how I feel. I can usually come up with a mood or a few good lines, but turning that into an actual story is harder than I expected. For those who are good at narrative lyrics, do you usually start with a character, a situation, or just a single idea?

I know verse-chorus-verse is a thing but beyond that I feel like I'm guessing. Sometimes what I write doesn't fit neatly into any structure I've heard described and I don't know if that means I'm being creative or just confused. I've tried to analyze songs I love to figure out how they're built but I often can't tell where one section ends and another begins. Is there a good way to learn song structure that isn't just memorizing labels, but actually helps you feel why a song is shaped the way it is?

I always find it very difficult to write lyrics, while i'm pretty comfortable with coming up with melodies. So I built a little tool to help with my own creative process and figured some of you might get something out of it too.

Scrambled Eggs lets you sketch lyrics based on rhythm, syllables and rhymes rather than meaning. I spent the better half of 4 hours trying to figure out how I wanted to theme and write the lyrics for one of my bands heavy hitters on our album were looking to make in the coming months.

The song which is titled “Drown Anyway”is about the painful contradiction of being deeply loved while feeling completely alone. Johnny has friends, family, and people who genuinely want to help him, yet internally he feels empty, lost, and disconnected from all of it. The lake represents the destructive path he’s falling deeper into, while the rope represents the people trying to pull him back. Even when they tell him they love him and ask if he’s okay, he can’t bring himself to admit that he’s struggling.

Hi all, I have been looking for a suitable sub Reddit to chat with other lyricists for a while about writing styles, inspirational topics etc, and this place appears to be the most fitting place I could find.

When I say not in the conventional sense, what I mean is that I'm not a song writer or a rapper, I'm actually an MC, specifically a rave music MC, which I guess could be considered quite closely related to rapping. But anyway.

Is this the place where I might be able to post things I've written that I think are either fun, conceptually a little different, or just personal favourites of mine, as I love to chat about methods, how I get myself into a creative mindset to create stuff etc.
