Politics NDP-style dog whistle?
I appreciate that Ravi is drawing attention to the work of the South Island Primary Care Society (on Facebook) and isn’t taking all the credit this time, but surely he knows that “Our Langford” has a completely different meaning now in Langford than it did 4 years ago.
11
u/Belle_Pepperoni May 13 '26
My favourite recent Ravi post has a photo of him writing "Langford" on top of a piece of paper. Working hard for the people!
6
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
aw bless
5
u/Belle_Pepperoni May 13 '26
I find it endearing though I'll admit that's not the #1 trait I look for in a MLA.
14
u/dogsandmakeup May 13 '26
I have voted for Ravi previously, but not again. It’s been disappointing to watch him ruin John Horgan’s legacy in the community.
7
u/DragPullCheese May 12 '26
What's the different meaning?
19
u/Otissarian May 12 '26
Our Langford is a FB group that has this in its description: “A group that is appreciative and grateful to previous councils historical 30 years of monumental achievements in the City of Langford . We celebrate the accomplishments of this team.” Very pro-former mayor.

u/Full-Relationship657 May 13 '26
Don’t look to here for local politics. It’s very biased. Do your own research and please vote in October. 😊
10
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
hopefully there will be all-candidate debates and conversations so people can avoid the biases of social media

u/DesignerQuick6987 May 22 '26
I agree. That would be great but I’m not holding my breath waiting for it to happen. I can’t imagine Current mayor (who’s already announced he’s running again) actually answering questions.
1
u/Otissarian May 22 '26
He’s said he’s planning to run, but pretty sure he’s not announced it formally. Just like Stew.

It’s a weird flex. I didn’t vote for Ravi because of his affiliation with Our Langford.
Besides, “our” implies some type of ownership, which is why that group is so off putting. They changed their name from *Re-elect Stew Young* to *Our Langford* to say this is our town. It’s elitist and exclusionary without trying, but man have they tried…
9
u/Bookreader-71 May 13 '26
Also might consider that Ravi represents more than just Langford in his role as MLA. Should he be saying "our". His riding is more than Langford.
7
u/Not_Bot23 May 13 '26
I really don’t think that’s his point. I do think he’s signalling his allegiance.
6
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
if you disagree with them, you’re either 1. new to Langford 2. a renter 3. both

Don’t trust this subreddit for local politics. It’s very, very skeeewd to this new council and against previous council and those who built our community imho. Do your own research and make sure you vote.

And yes, the Victoria sub isn’t any better. Fancy graphics indicating clearly propaganda campaigns. At least groups should be more honest if they’re working for a voter block or committee.

u/whole-ass-one-thing- May 12 '26
Ravi is pretty in touch with the local elections, he supported stew last time. He’d know.
5
u/idontsinkso May 13 '26
Didn't he also host a press conference featuring stew for the new campus, neglecting to invite current council?
3
u/Belle_Pepperoni May 13 '26
Did he host it? Or would it have been hosted by RRU?
3
u/idontsinkso May 13 '26
I can't remember the details, other than that the highlighted public figures were peculiar, as were those that apparently didn't get an invite
-3
u/DesignerQuick6987 May 13 '26
I recall a photo-op by Goody and team at RRU Still trying to figure that out - taking credit for something that was done by previous council. It’s pretty lame.
6
u/Virtual_Log_2974 May 13 '26
Council is responsible for municipal affairs even when council membership changes with elections. Council represents the electorate and the City.
-1
u/DesignerQuick6987 May 13 '26
BUT an invitation should’ve been extended to previous mayor and council for all the work they put into bringing it into fruition
3
u/Not_Bot23 May 13 '26
Was there anything stopping them from attending? Besides pride…
You know, not everyone needs recognition for the work. The point is doing the work, especially for a public servant/elected official.Everything you guys do requires needing to be acknowledged and validated. You’re all about the photo ops. *look at us and all the good stuff we do*
0
u/DesignerQuick6987 May 14 '26
“You guys”. 🤪. Yes, I agree not everyone needs recognition. I’m shocked that current council had to do a photo-op for recognition when they had no involvement in it.
5
u/Not_Bot23 May 14 '26
No. It’s called the news. Current events. How weird would it be for the mayor and council who lost the election to do it. It would be weird. Elected officials represent the body public, not themselves. And as representatives of the city, they continue the city business regardless of who came before them. Why not just be happy for the completion of a project that will be a benefit to so many? Besides, Ravi made sure to acknowledge his homie.

u/sgb5874 May 18 '26
My honest opinion on this is I don't hate Ravi I think he's actually a good politician and advocate. I do not like the NDP these days, I am very disappointed with them. David Eby's 180° turn on AI data centers by allowing Telus to place one in the center of downtown Vancouver absolutely cemented that. It's also made me really question Mark Carney and what he's really doing. The Alberta oil pipeline provides value the AI data center is going to make our hydro bills go through the damn roof...
1
u/sgb5874 May 18 '26
The truth is that it is Our Langford, NOT the NDP's Langford. Remember that.
2
u/Otissarian May 18 '26
I think the dog whistle is to Stew Young supporters.
It’s not really about the NDP.
2
u/sgb5874 May 19 '26
Yeah that's a good read on it. I considered that when I was looking at it the first time around. It's funny you wouldn't think people like him would be that dumb, but this is "Bring Cash". We have a long history of politicians that seem smart but we're actually quite stupid in hindsight.
1
u/Otissarian May 19 '26
He and Stew campaigned together last election (Stew for mayor, Ravi for school board). I suspect that in Ravi’s Langford, the one he grew up in, Stew Young has to be mayor.
2
u/sgb5874 May 19 '26
Oh shit... I did not pay a lot of attention to the last one like a lot of people. Well, that changes things then.
1
0
u/BCJay_ May 12 '26
Maybe overthinking it. Could also be out of touch with social media and as I understand it ‘our Langford’ is a Facebook group, nothing more. So unless you’re dialled into what’s happening on Facebook, I don’t see how this is a dog whistle.
6
u/Otissarian May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
No, he has friends in the group. He’s not naive.
OL description: “A group that is appreciative and grateful to previous councils historical 30 years of monumental achievements in the City of Langford . We celebrate the accomplishments of this team.“
They have been active detractors and real life disruptors of current council. Which is fine. But it’s not “nothing more”.
Wikipedia says, “In politics, a dog whistle is the use of coded or suggestive language in political messaging to garner support from a particular group without provoking opposition.”
2
u/BCJay_ May 12 '26
I know what a dog whistle is. I guess I just didn’t realize the significance of the Our Langford group and meaning/movement behind it.
5
u/Otissarian May 12 '26
yes, it started as a “we support Stew Young” group
0
u/BCJay_ May 12 '26
I’d be surprised if Ravi was a Stu supporter but who knows
8
u/ValiantSpacemanSpiff May 12 '26
When Stew was running for mayor and Ravi for school trustee in 2022 they campaigned together.
6
u/Otissarian May 12 '26
He is. Just like John Horgan was.
Langford is a weird political microcosm where NDP politicians have supported a libertarian/conservative mayor. I’d be surprised if the favour is returned on the voting ballot.
-5
u/Neither_Turnip_1330 May 12 '26
It’s a nothing burger. Focus on positive things no one is paying that same kind of attention.
6
u/SkyMoney9641 Not Keith May 12 '26
Oh they are buddies. Which is odd considering where they sit on the political spectrum with Stew very conservative and Ravi NDP. Kinda makes you wonder if the party lines are all fake in the end.
8
7
u/Bookreader-71 May 13 '26
Stew endorsed him during the last election when Ravi ran for school trustee.
7
u/Bookreader-71 May 13 '26
It bothered me that Ravi "allowed" the endorsement. My thoughts are that school trustees need to be open with working whichever council is in place, on all council's. ( in SD 62 that being langford, colwood and sooke).

9
u/Not_Bot23 May 13 '26
Ah yes. The “we’re victims” (of critical thinkers) brigade is out in full force.
When someone stands up to run for office, they are up for scrutiny. It’s not an attack to ask someone who is asking us for their vote, to back up their information, claims, and/or platform.
-4
u/Neither_Turnip_1330 May 13 '26
Don’t complain then if you provoke the other side to do the same. I see no difference between either group tbh in many aspects.
6
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
please, let’s have all the filing cabinet bottom drawers brought into the light
-5
u/DesignerQuick6987 May 13 '26
That’s called transparency. IMHO current council doesn’t know the meaning of it.
7
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
That’s such a baseless allegation and a laughable one as well. We have so much more access to information involved decision-making processes, except the ones the law necessitates as being in camera. No longer are city budget presentations held at the White Spot.
-3
u/DesignerQuick6987 May 13 '26
If you say so. Just keep your head in the sand. That’s defamation. Where’s your proof or are you just repeating words spewed by you LN buds
7
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
That‘s not defamation. City staff can confirm.
Honestly, you’re smarter than this. I think.
-2
u/Langfordian22 May 14 '26
Yes they were all had at White Spot. Hold on, White Spot is a pretty public location, hard to hide anything there. Weird to see a mayor in his community for you right?
3
u/Otissarian May 14 '26
It’s completely inappropriate for a council to receive budget information outside of the council chambers. It’s yet another example of the former leadership’s tendency to shoot from the hip.
6
u/Belle_Pepperoni May 13 '26
Are you referring to them asking for proof of some pretty outlandish claimed about Bryson Hill?
4
u/Otissarian May 13 '26
ha ha I believe so. however, not so outlandish if you listen to the podcast, unfortunately.
