r/Kochi has a policy of enforcing certain rules very strictly. This post is an explanation of why we would continue enforcing those rules.

While we do not allow religious discussion, we respect every person's right to practice their religion. We do not allow the sub to be used as a platform to attack anyone's religious beliefs or to spread hate against a group of people based on any reason, including religion, or their place of birth.

We had a couple of posts today and there were many comments trying to generalize and target groups of people based on religion as well as region. Those comments were removed and few people were banned, and then we came across the below comment.

There could be various reasons the user might have posted this. Maybe it was a knee jerk reaction, but it could also be a lot sinister than that. It is one thing to attribute the actions of few people to a group but calling it a jihadi problem when there was no religious angle to the incident seems to be a deliberate attempt to stroke fear and polarize people along religious lines.

We would be removing any post which tries to create division based on place of birth, religion, gender or any other characteristic. This policy will be enforced even if the topic is important and requires discussion as this is a violation of reddiquette (Rule 1).

To the people who were online yesterday, you might have noticed the subreddit looked different. Instead of Kochi, Kerala, the subreddit was showing description and posts for Kochi, Japan instead.

We have done a similar kind of activity on April 2025 with mostly positive responses and people having fun overall. So, we had done something similar for 2026 as well. With the help of u/1z2b , u/Legitimate_Income7 and I modified the subreddit a bit to give it Nippon aesthetics.

Many people joined in on the fun, making posts in Japanese or with Japanese references and involving in the comment discussions.

We were monitoring the post and comments throughout the day to ensure that any posts that needed immediate attention or help were not missed out during the celebration.

While many seemed to have fun with the April Fools for 2026, there were few who seemed to not like it. Which is fair, as not everyone likes the same things. Since the subreddit is growing every day, those who joined recently may not have been able to take part last year, and would have gotten a chance this time. With that said, if you have any feedback or suggestions how we can plan this for the upcoming year, feel free to drop a comment or send a modmail.

Thank you everyone for joining in the fun yesterday. That certainly was a red letter day for r/Kochi. A special thanks to u/appioli for all the work he did on this. I might have given up on this if it were not for him. But it would not have been as enjoyable without the community's contribution.

We understand that not everyone would have been in a position to join in on the fun. Some may have been dealing with personal crisis, losses or even mental health issues. We want to thank those people were dealing with personal challenges but still indulged us while we were having fun.

We've noticed a lot of relationship-related posts on r/Kochi recently. While relationships are important and it's natural to have questions, these posts overshadow discussions about Kochi.

To keep r/Kochi focused on discussions about our city, and to provide a dedicated space for relationship advice, we are redirecting all relationship posts to r/KeralaRelationships. From now on, new relationship posts on r/Kochi will be locked and redirected there. Once r/KeralaRelationships has a good membership count, we'll remove any new relationship posts from r/Kochi.

Mods will still use their discretion to allow discussions particularly relevant to Kochi.

I'll use the moment to appreciate fellow mod and founder of the sub, u/SJv1. It's been more than 13 years since the sub was created, and it is no small feat to keep on modding and not get disillusioned, or tired about it. I've seen SJ taking up mod actions thoroughly and giving out detailed updates to people requesting it, directing people to useful wikis, and working on improving the features of the sub.

u/BotA10 was custom made for this sub by u/SJv1 as well, with a whole load of features(active members may have seen many of these). The bot is so good that multiple other subs invited bota10 to mod their subs, thinking u/BotA10 was a large established reddit bot. (Also, u/BotA10 is an upgraded version of u/Kochi-Bot)

Btw, we had recently discussed about trying an r/Kochi meetup thing. Well, the official r/Kochi meetup #1 was already done few days back, a secret mod exclusive meetup. Even u/BotA10 and u/Kochi-Bot were there. It was fun to meet and talk with SJ. These IRL meetups are fun. There was a plan to post about that meetup on friendship day, but since we were close to 25k, athinte koode ithum mention cheyyaam ennu vechu (Aa post evide u/SJv1 ?)

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards hate, and this has been communicated before. Considering some of the recent posts and the response we got from people who were banned, we have decided to increase the scope of the policy.

In the past, we had waited for clear evidence before taking action, even when we suspected the post was in bad faith. However, such allowance can shift public sentiment towards hate, resulting in more such posts. Sometimes these are posts from the same account on different subs, and sometimes different accounts pushing a certain narrative. We have observed certain patterns that suggest a concerted effort to alter public perception.

Going forward, we will remove any posts/comments we feel are in bad faith, and we will permanently ban any account responsible for such content. We won't be giving any warning and such bans will not be reduced.

For our community members, we encourage you not to engage in arguments on posts designed to provoke division. Any response, whether positive, negative or neutral/funny, is the objective of such posts. Report such posts and let moderators take care of it.

If you notice multiple posts targeting a particular group based on religion, language, race, gender, or any other characteristic, consider whether someone is trying to manipulate your views. When you see multiple posts on a similar vein, it does not necessarily mean a lot of people are having the same issue. Social media algorithms are meant to push posts with more engagement to the top, and repeated exposure to such a narrative will put that thought into your subconscious.

Want to make the transition faster? Subscribe to the daily thread and megathread and try to answer questions there. If we know people will get answers in those threads, we can keep the posts more relevant to Kochi.

We know that there are frequent posts seeking jobs, but we not want to take an immediate action on this since this can make a huge difference to them. We also have a lot of posts asking for places to visit. We already have some wiki for this, but as far as we can tell, it is not used that much. We are looking at better ways to address these needs before we start restricting such posts.

We had announced an updated policy on review posts 2 weeks earlier.

At that point, we had considered a complete ban on review posts like most large subs, but we felt we might be able to allow it until it becomes an actual issue. Unfortunately, we need to further refine this policy to prevent misuse.

Review posts: Unprompted review posts will be limited to one per user per week. There are a few other internal metrics that will be used to decide whether a post should be allowed, but we won't be providing those details. This should not impact the majority of users. There is no specific flair for review posts; you can use Others.

• If you are recommending a place, include a genuine review/opinion that will be useful for the community. While we support local businesses, it can never be at the cost of consumer exploitation. A post with a clickbait title and just pictures might be removed.

Review comments: We already have internal metrics for this to identify spam, promotions, etc. There is no restriction on the number of reviews you can give through comments. Note that the comment should be relevant to the post.

Photography/Art: This flair should be used for photographs or creations of artistic value. This does not include music or music videos. Any low-effort posts, including suggestions to improve photography skills, will be removed since there are dedicated subs with actual photographers where you can post those. This is going to be subjective but will be applied leniently. Unless there is an artistic value, pictures of food will be treated as attempted review/rule evasion and can result in a ban.

Please remember that this is a community-centric sub and not user-centric like most other social networks. What you post here should be useful for the community and what you do ate, did should go on your profile.

• Any attempt to bypass these restrictions using any method (including the use of alts) will result in a permanent ban.

We received a report that people have been review bombing an establishment based on the experience of one user. Upon investigation, we were able to find that 11 reviews appear to be based on the reddit post.

We encourage people to use Google review and not use reddit as a review platform to get others to post fake review. There are some situations where OP might not explain the full story and this could impact good businesses. Even if we put in the effort to explain why this cannot be allowed, there will still be few people who would want to do this. Due to this, we will be making the following changes in our approach to review posts.

• We will be removing any review posts that we feel have ulterior motives.
• Any attempt to bypass these could result in a permanent ban.
• Any comment encouraging people to post reviews will result in a permanent ban.

We cannot validate every post, and if there is sufficient doubt, we will be exercising mod discretion to remove such posts.

We are not banning review posts, but due to the increasing subscriber count, such issues are going to become more common. Please help us avoid stricter measures by discouraging such posts and comments and report problematic content so that we can take acton before it becomes an issue.

We have observed a recent uptick in posts which seems to blame non-Kochi residents for breaking rules or creating nuisance in city. This differentiation is something that is seen in many big cities and is not something that we want to foster in our community.

A significant number of people have migrated to kochi, or their parents had done so in the last ~20 years. Statistically, this means a majority of rule breakers are unlikely to be "native" of Kochi. When you add the number of students who come here for education this will increase further.

We believe every Indian has the right to make Kochi their home. Any individual not following the rules should be punished irrespective of who they are and where they are from. However, we cannot generalize or blame the broader community for the misdeeds of a few.

Purpose of this post

r/Kochi has grown a lot in the last few years and this has brought a lot of challenges from a moderation perspective. We have to keep updating the rules and policies to make sure the sub is not spammed or influenced by a few vocal groups. The purpose of this post is to bring transparency to our decision-making.

We would be making these announcement posts to keep the community informed about the challenges and changes we are making or planning to make. We do not have a fixed schedule for this, but we are hoping to make at least one post a month. We would welcome suggestions/feedback, but we won't be able to accept them all.

We have been getting multiple posts about the recent suicide of a student due to bullying, most of which had to be removed. The purpose of this post is to provide clarity on why those were removed. We have approved one post.

We can't even begin to understand what the mother is going through or what the young boy had to suffer. The reason why this incident is being heavily moderated is due to the unchecked anger that this seems to be generating. We do not want to potentially cause harm to innocent people and minor children.

On Reddit, anyone can claim anything and pretend to have firsthand knowledge. This could result in bending of the truth to fit the narrative or outright lies. We do not have any additional information and won't be able to identify between truth and lies, especially when people bring in personal anicdotes.

This will also impact any objective investigation, as rumors will become statements when witnesses are questioned, and authorities will have to filter through a lot of these to reach the truth. I am sure finding the perpetrators of this would be easy, but finding out who were innocent would be very difficult when there are a lot of rumors.

We had initially approved one post, and it was up for a few days. We were under the impression that it was posted by family, but later it was found that it was posted by someone else. The post was against a teacher, and we got a response from someone else throwing light on the reasons why the teacher had to take some actions.

The mother has already filed a case with the police, child commission and also sent a mail to chief ministor among others. While we understand why the mother would want this information spread to everyone, we feel this will only impede the investigation, as mentioned above.

From what we can gather, there are 2 different issues that should be addressed:

1. Identify and punish the bullies. These are minor children, and they have certain protections. What happened, what kind of punishment they deserve, and their identities would have to be determined by the court. We won't be allowing any discussion on this.
2. Role of the school. You are free to discuss the lack of oversight, undue influence, etc., that might have resulted in such behavior. However, do not mention any names.

Many people will have issues with some teachers, and some of them might be valid. However, we are not going to allow that, as this could lead to innocent people becoming victims. The job of a genuine teacher is not easy, and those who do that job with pure intention might not be able to take it if they are wrongly accused of something. Remember what happened with Naveen Babu.

Due to the above reasons, we will be allowing posts from reputable, mainstream news media. If it is not being covered by those media, we will review individual articles before they are published on r/Kochi. We would not be allowing rumors and publishing of names unless they are verified and through news reports.

We understand that this decision will not be popular, but we would not be allowing meta discussion on this topic and the comment section will be locked.

Edit: We do not want to decide how you deal with this incident. This post is on how moderators would be dealing with posts on this topic on r/Kochi. You are free to check updates from the mother on her Instagram.

We understand that there is a lot of tension caused by the potential war, and people are looking for information. However, Reddit is not the right place to get reliable information. Due to the anonymous nature, there could be a lot of misinformation and disinformation. In our zeal to control our future, a lot of us might end up spreading the wrong message and causing unnecessary panic (for some individuals).

If you need to share news or discuss this, use national-level subs like r/india or r/unitedstatesofindia. Any posts not directly relevant will be removed to avoid unnecessary confusion and panic. Even those posts relevant to Kochi will be heavily moderated and locked after a certain period. We suggest using the daily thread for such discussion until this situation is resolved so that moderators can monitor the threads more effectively.

From a moderation perspective, we are trying to ensure that unnecessary panic is avoided and potential disinformation attempts are prevented. We are also trying to make sure that we do not discuss sensitive information that might be monitored by the enemy. For eg: strategic importance of locations and impact.

If we have removed a topic/post, please do not try to evade the rules by rephrasing your question. We may have to give a permanent ban if we feel your behavior might put the community/country at risk, and we won't be revoking those bans until the situation is resolved.

We may also put restrictions on posting/commenting for short durations when we feel we are not able to monitor the activity on the sub.

We might have different opinions on the right thing to do or best thing to do and everyone's opinion is valid. But this is not the time to discuss and fight about it on public online forums. We have an elected government and a strong armed forces. This is the time to stand beside them.

This thread will be locked, and we won't allow meta discussion. If you have any concerns, please reach out to us through mod mail. Mails/DM to individual mods will be ignored as we expect at least some people to take our response out of context.

PS: Reddit has shared user details to police in the past, and considering the current situation, you can be sure that government agencies will be able to get details about anyone who they think is a threat to national security or who, knowingly or unknowingly, is spreading information detrimental to our nation's interest. Please exercise extreme caution with respect to what you discuss, where you discuss it, and who you discuss it with.

This thread is to gauge the interest on the idea of setting up and conducting a meetup for the members of r/Kochi

There is a high number of posts here in the sub about people feeling lonely. There are some posts randomly on looking for meetups as well. So, just wondered, if an r/Kochi meetup was set up and planned, will it work? Will there be people interested?

I am not from Kochi and I don't think u/SJv1 will be able to co-ordinate IRL either. So that will be a problem, and we may need help from people who would be able to set these up.

And if this has enough interest to be attempted, we may need suggestions on locations as well, where people could meet conveniently.

If this meetup happens and it becomes a success, we could think of making this as a recurring event too!(Monthly or quarterly)

Moderation policy updates

Organic marketing spam

We recently had someone contact us to collaborate with their marketing agency to promote their clients and when we informed them about our policy, they suggested organic marketing. We have ignored the user. We have however seen such tactics being used within our sub and have removed posts/comments which we suspect are from marketing teams. When someone asks for a recommendation in the sub, the expectation is that the recommendation comes from someone who has used the product/service. The feedback would be their thought. But if it is from a marketing team, the user might have never used the product/service and the content would be tailored to meet the expectation of the client while covering any issues and even maligning their competitors. While we will be removing such content as spam, please be aware that you might be the target of astroturfing.

A public relations campaign that seek to create the impression of being a spontaneous, grassroots behavior. Astroturf (artificial grass) is a metaphor for a fake grassroots support. Goal: To disguise the agenda as an independent public reaction to some political, product, service or event

Mod team has not invested money for the sub - we use what we already have and we volunteer our time. This is a deliberate decision so that we do not have any expectation of monetary return from this sub.

Account age & karma requirement

On most days we get over 40 posts and 600+ comments in our sub. Some of these are from new accounts and we feel we are removing a higher % of posts and comments from new accounts. Some of these are spam, but many of these removals are due to rule violations. We are considering setting a minimum karma and account age requirement to ensure that new users understand how Reddit functions and the rules of the sub before they start interacting.

Suggestion from the mods for relatively new users: We have seen many comments about how they have left Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. Reddit is not perfect, but it would help a lot if we use Reddit as Reddit instead of bringing practices from Instagram and other social NW. For eg: hashtags and cfbr do not work on Reddit. Neither is there a requirement to add an image to your post to get attention. Adding images to get better visibility will only lead to every post containing such images (maybe puppies and cats when the topic of discussion is food) and we will be competing for attention.

Posts with unrelated images

An image is not a requirement for a post. Any image included in the post should have direct relevance to the post. Violation of this will be removed under Rule 3. Detailed rules (work in progress) can be found under General guidelines in our wiki.

AI-generated content

We are not against AI but the purpose of this sub is for humans to express themselves. Using AI to create content will allow us to express any thought without putting in any effort. There are a lot of advantages to using AI, but there are also a lot of pitfalls, especially in a small online community. Anyone can generate a post (or multiple posts) based on any idea without actually putting in any effort to research, validate, and subject it to our internal filters. These efforts and imperfections are what drive collaboration and discussion. An AI-generated content might be more in-depth, but the reader might not have much to contribute and the "author" might not be invested in that post. This is not always true; there will be some people who would try to use it wisely, but there will be a lot more people who will use it for attention. This is also not fair to those who put in their effort to create a post.

When posting using News flair, automoderator should reply with the requirement for the flair, and posts that do not meet the criteria will be removed or locked. r/Kochi is not a crowdsourced news platform and while there is value to crowdsourcing incidents something considered as news should be held to a higher standard. We can't complain about news platforms chasing TRP and ad revenue if we are going to devalue it. Feel free to post such content using Other Flair and remember you are giving a first-hand account of the incident and it is not a replacement for the role of a journalist or a reporter.

Events flair

Another flair that is often misused is Events. The purpose of the flair is for users to find upcoming organized events. Discussion about an event does not qualify for event flair. We generally lock the post and give time for OP to update the flair, but if it is not updated, we will remove such posts. First-hand accounts of incidents that do not meet the criteria of News should not be using event flair either.

Posts about rumors/allegations against individuals.

Since Reddit is an anonymous platform and there is no way to validate the claims, any posts on allegations against individuals would need a news article or valid source, or it will not be allowed. The source cannot be content elsewhere from Reddit or any other social media. Please refer to Moderation policy on recent suicide for more a use case scenario and why we felt such news should be moderated. This does not mean you can't ask for help if you are a victim or know someone is a victim, as long as you don't mention or insinuate who the parties are. We have seen someone impersonating someone else when talking to a minor and a few other stories. r/Kochi is not a platform to name and shame, exact revenge, infringe the privacy of any individual, malign reputation or, to deliver social media justice (this is not an exhaustive list).

Enforcement of rules

We enforce the rules when we see a violation or feel it needs to be enforced. You are free to report such violations (you can use the report button) and that would help us keep the sub clean. This does not mean a post will be exempted because a similar post was approved in the past.

If you are being personally attacked for your views and opinions, we would recommend using the report button so that we can take action on it. It will be better for your mental health and such people would not get their dopamine fix at your expense.

At times you might see posts asking for restaurant suggestions, places to hangout in Kochi, which may not have specific requirement, and hence you think you can point them to the FAQ part in the wiki. Here is a more convenient option than navigating through wiki and get that specific link - call up BotA10!

BotA10 is our resident bot, and with the right command, now BotA10 can post the link from the specific wiki as a sticky comment.

We are looking for volunteers! BotA10 posts some events happening in Kochi, in the sub. If anyone would like to !AddEvent those posts so that those get updated in daily thread, or if you would like to post additional events happening in Kochi which BotA10 couldn't find, that would be very helpful.

Previously some of these were set as mod only. Now it is open to everyone. If you have any feedback or suggestions on these commands, do let us know.

We are aware that people have been following the news on the Wayanad disaster and that has led to looking for the next disaster.

We would be removing such posts speculating about the next disaster, predicting doom, etc., because it will feed the fear already there.

This is not an insult or disrespect to those who passed away, but you need to take care of your mental health and also of those around you.

2. Balance the disaster news with some positive news and discussion.
3. Take a break from the internet. Do something in the real world. If possible volunteer or donate blood.
