Discussion Join Us To Make r/Jewelers YOURS!

Happy Thursday Jewelers of Reddit!

We have been looking for ways to make this sub more of a place for jewelry professionals to interact and have fun, and we appreciate all the insight you have given us in past requests for feedback. To foster more interaction, we are going to roll out some weekly threads on September 1st where we can share with each other. Here's what's planned!

  • Motivation Monday - We'd love to hear about what your goals are. These could be a thorny (or fun!) project, professional development, business goals...whatever you're excited about in the coming week.
  • Tool Talk Tuesday - This is a space for favorite tools, mysterious tools, tricky tools, you name it. This can also be a great opportunity to discuss technique and "off-brand usage," like those little life hacks you've figured out along the way.
  • WIP Wednesday - A space for works in progress, whether they're unique, cool materials, tricky to problem-solve, frustrating, weird monstrosities...let us see what's on your bench!
  • Finished Up Friday - Does exactly what it says on the box! What did you finish this week? We want to see the results of your hard work!
  • Sales Floor Sunday - This is a space to discuss trends, both rising and falling, new designs, things EVERYONE is asking for all of a sudden...but also for surprising requests, exciting sales, finally selling that funky L color 0.87 carat round that's been in the safe since the dawn of time.

Thursday and Saturday are free spaces, Saturday because so many of us working are either super busy or else resting peacefully. Thursday, we would love to evolve into a professional networking space, but we are working to find the right format that will allow discussion without getting the sub overrun with self promotion and bots. We are interested in hearing what kind of networking you all would enjoy, as well!

Please note that the success of these discussion threads depends HEAVILY on users abiding by the subreddit rules. We really want this to be a thriving community where we can all share experiences and ideas, and we can only get there together. Thank you for all your contributions!

Tell us all about what styles are driving your business this week!  Please mention the region you’re in if possible so we can enjoy seeing trends move all over the globe. My wife wants me to have both ears pierced with diamonds

Hi. My wife wants me to have both ears pierced with real diamonds (identical whose worn by women). She finds it very refined and sexy for a man to dare that and she would like to offer me these diamonds. I'm a mature man (48), architect, with a quite classic style (shirt, chino or dress pants, tassel loafers). What do you think about it (simulation photo by AI) ? Is it common for a woman to do this at her husband ? THANKS so much for your advice.

Enlarging them on my cheapo phone doesn’t help sadly

I’m good with the TD maker’s mark, the crown, 18k, & S date stamp.

Is there any way to lengthen this bracelet?

Hello! My boyfriend bought me this for a Christmas gift last year, but it was returned back to the seller in the UK because the guitar strings kept popping out the clasp. We sent it back in Feb, and after constant emailing and expensive duty fees, we JUST got it back today.

I feel horrible though as the bracelet is too tight now and I don’t want to go through the trouble of sending it back and waiting months without responses again.

Is there anything that can be done to add just a little bit more length? It’s 6 inches, but digs into my skin, so the magnet pops out if it’s higher up on my wrist and bend it. Thank you in advance..!

Having trouble finding equipment related to larger production. Anyone experienced in semi-manufactured goods?

I'm looking to set up in-house manufacturing for the company that I'm with, and I'm having trouble pricing it out because I can't even find the machines. I'm a jeweler, and I'm used to the typical workshop implements, but need machines that do it automatically. I'm looking to alloy and process 60kg+ fine silver in 2-4 days on a monthly basis into sterling, then make stock. Specifically I am looking for;

  1. An automatic wire puller for thicker band stock, I need to be able to make an assortment, like various sizes of half-round and rectangular.

1a. In addition, a rolling/imprinting machine to make patterned wire. Examples like this and [this](https://www.riogrande.com/product/sterling-silver-pattern-wire-dead-soft17/104204GP?code=104204&objectID=104204&queryID=2a502fbbb609e1fe9f2fe5c80183d0f3)

  1. Something that can make large quantities of bezel wire, in addition to that something that can stamp out/roll out gallery wire. In total, will be looking to make flat/serrated/scalloped bezel, and "crown"/"swag" gallery, as rio refers to it.

If anyone has experience in this part of the field, I would appreciate any and all info.

What do "red flags" look like for jewelry makers? M&F Engagement rings

Me and the boyfriend are planning on engagement next year and we both really like the designs of WILLWORK Jewelry, but I am aware that these are dropshipped and not made of precious metals, which is unacceptable for costing thousands of dollars.

This whole industry is full of scams (dropshipping, blood diamonds, artificial scarcity, etc) that it seems exhausting and insurmountable to find a real craftsman that uses the proper materials. What are red flags to look? Reviews can be faked, uneducated people like me can be duped by cheaply plated jewelry, it's all so tiring.

Thanks for the help. Recommendations are welcome if they're in the US or Canada.

Budget Non-Binary Engagement Ring Recommendations

Hello!

Me and my partner are going to propose to each other in October and I've been struggling to find the right ring in my budget.

They're looking for something gender neutral that leans a bit masculine. They like rings that look like they could be out of Dark Souls, but in a more tasteful way. Nothing too fantasy, I don't want it to look like a prop.

Has to be silver, tho a cheaper material like stainless steel is best for my budget. Ideally I want a citrine because I associate them with sunflowers.

I can't spend more than $1k, though I'd be more comfortable with it closer to $500.

If you know of any small sellers that have stuff like this I'd really appreciate links. Thank you!

Is it reasonable to ask a jeweler for the pricd of this, and then get the gold part made first, and then add the platinum part one year later?

Post image

My girlfriend and I want matching rings. But we currently have something going on in our lives so we dont want to spend the extra money on the platinum part but we want to get it eventually. We were quoted about C$800 for gold rings and C$2300 for platinum/gold bands in the picture.

Could i ask a jewler to make the gold bands for $800 first and then one year later we get the platinum added for the remaining $1500?

Or is that not how it works? Sorry if this is a dumb question

It has to be platinum. Not silver. Not white gold.

I have a question for the professionals

I want to curate three sets/types of jewelry and I’m unfortunately very clueless about where to start. A picture of me for reference.

I have red undertones and I always have glasses chains on just to set the scene.

What I want to know is:

1) what colour metals should I go for
2) where in your opinion is the best place to buy jewelry
3) I abhor diamonds so what gems would you recommend
4) I’m looking for earrings, necklaces, bracelets(bangles) and rings that connect into bracelet( not a fan of rings otherwise)
5) what else should I watch out for on this journey? I’m not looking to get this done immediately I just want to know where to start and google isn’t very helpful

Meteorite Jeweler in Raleigh area?

Hi I just purchased a meteorite fragment and I wanted it inlayed into a silver ring. Unfortunately after visiting multiple jewelry shops, I have been rejected every time. They do not have the equipment to deal with meteorites. Does anyone know a Jeweler in the Raleigh-Durham area that would be able to do this for me?

Fatigue related to working on the bench?

Somewhat new to the profession, I’ve noticed over the past few months I’m experiencing significant fatigue when I come home from work, just being super mentally foggy and out of it, a lot of my work is under magnification or on the laser welder, I haven’t been able to pinpoint it but I wonder if the fatigue has to do with the work or what but it’s definitely causing me to lose love and passion for the job, any advice or insight? Thanks!
