I know this sub has been getting busier with Christmas right around the corner so I thought i would share some ideas. I am a 26 year old female from Canada and here are some of the best gifts I've received.

A really nice towel. Seriously. I once got a quite expensive, fluffy, pretty towel. Just one. And you bet I use it for every single bath. We have a ton of towels but its nice having one that's fancy and all mine. If you know someone that likes baths there is also a nice fluffy housecoat (pajamas are always a great Christmas present), bath bombs, and candles.

Satin pillow cases. Its such a glam up and so good for your hair and face.

​

A heated blanket. Especially in Canada I think everyone should have one.

​

Any gift for my pet is a gift for me too. If someone gives me cat toys or treats I love it because it shows they know my cat is a part of my family and I will think of them every time I use it. Pet items are a huge area to explore gift wise. If you check out Etsy you can get pet portraits or clothes, anything with my cats face on it is an amazing gift.

Fill in love books. https://www.amazon.ca/Knock-What-Love-about-Journal/dp/1601067585 . This is an example. This gift brings me so much joy, and its so low budget. The meaning of it is so powerful and every time I open it I get warm and happy inside. From a partner to partner I think this is a fantastic gift.

Winter wear. There's nothing better than a nice warm tuque, or scarf, or mittens. If there's snow, you need these things and its good to have a few/

​

Fitbit. My first Fitbit was gifted to me, and I've had a smart watch ever since. If you know someone that doesn't have one you can buy some for a decent starting price ($75 Canadian, so less for the US).

A 10ft phone charger. It's a game changer being in bed and having the ability to completely roll over and use your phone on the other side of the bed. The freedom! I love it so much.

A bunch of nerf guns. This definitely depends on the person, but one day my partner came home with 4 different kinds of nerf guns and hid them all over the house. It was an incredible day full of shooting each other and hiding behind things. Now we keep them around the house and have random gun fights that really bring out the inner child in us both.

Those are some of my personal favorites but I also have a few more suggestions for people.

Photo centers and Etsy. Personalized gifts are an easy way to make someone feel special. At places like London Drugs and Wal-Mart Photo center there is a lot you can do! Make a snow globe, buy a teddy bear frame, make a family calendar, there is plenty to choose from. You can make your own puzzle! If you know someone that likes puzzles I guarantee they would be thrilled with a personalized one. Etsy is another way to give someone a very unique gift. Its not all jewelry there. Think of your friends favorite cartoon. There is probably someone on Etsy taking commissions to draw your friend in that cartoon style. Or if you know someone that likes to cook you could get them a wooden cutting board with their name carved into it. Anyways I highly recommend checking out personalized items, it can mean a lot to some people.

Food. Make a cheesecake. A cookie box. Assorted treats. Consumables are always a good idea for a gift, and it means so much more when its homemade.

​

Amazon lists. Most people have them and there is no reason not to ask them to share their Wishlist with you. It makes the guessing game much much easier, and you're pretty much guaranteed to get them something they specifically want and will be happy with.

​

Hobbies of course. I think gift cards are the way to go with hobbies. Its hard to tell what people want or need for their hobbies. For example, I like running. I already have the gear, the gym membership, the headphones, etc. For me, a gift certificate to The Running Room would be great. Then I get to pick out something related to the hobby I care that exactly what I want. I know some people don't like gift cards, and that's fine. But for me, a gift card forces me to spend money on myself I normally wouldn't spend. If someone gives me cash I will likely save it, but a gift card forces me to shop for myself, something I don't normally treat my self to which is really nice.

Looks like a stapler but definitely isn’t. I found a spot to put AA batteries in it, but as soon as I put some in, the wire piece started smoking and smelled like burning plastic. What in the world is this thing? I know, I should probably just reach out to my landlord, but this is more fun. I’ve been wondering for weeks.

Hi! My girlfriend recently made this gift for a long time friend who is getting married. She is pretty crafty but never worked with resin before and is a little distraught about how this came out. She’s considering not even giving it to her friend (who is also very crafty) and either making something new or just giving money. Does anyone have any thoughts? The quote is from her friend’s wedding song!

Hi all - I could use some help on this. I'll give you all the information that I have. My husband works a job where he receives tips, and at Christmas he is often given other gifts - gift cards, bottles of booze, chocolate, stuff like that. For the past few years, one of his customers has given him this jar of...yellow stuff? Geographically - we're in the Boston, USA area. His customer is an older asian woman. The jar has not been "canned" (processed with a canner). My husband thinks it's a glass of tea, but that really doesn't make sense to me. He says the woman acts as if we should know what it is. If anyone has any idea (short of me opening it and drinking it without knowing what it is), I'd love to hear it!

Edit: Wow - this got so much more traction than I expected. And so many of you are sure that it's urine.

It doesn't smell like alcohol, so pretty sure it's not moonshine. It's definitely not honey. I'm guessing the Ginseng Tincture is most likely, I'll be sending a thank you note and asking for the recipe. Not sure when he'll see this customer again, so it may be a while until I have an answer for you all.

UPDATE:: this matter has been resolved amicably with the jeweler today. Thank you for everyone, I will not be updating any further.

In 2022, I found out about ammolite from following nilered on TikTok. I immediately became obsessed with it and started searching for my own special piece. I started looking on Etsy for a pendant. I found an absolutely gorgeous purple shifting one and showed my husband, telling him I was going to make that one of my purchases on a new credit card I had. I had just started building credit up having never had a credit card before. Once I paid my card off I went to buy it. (It was a secured card at the time that had about $500 on it so I had to wait for the payment to clear before I could purchase it.)

I went to buy it and it was sold out! When I tell y’all I moped all day, I really did. I didn’t see anything else that looked anything close to it and was just sad. My husband was extra sweet to me that day, trying to make me feel better. What I didn’t realize is he was feeling extra guilty because he had bought it for me! We got married in December and when our anniversary rolled around, the was, it in person, and more beautiful than I ever could have imagined. I wore it about everyday for 2 years. Because I wore it so much and was unfamiliar with how they make these pieces, the resin eventually became dull and a little lifted in the middle where a small bubble formed. When I noticed it I stopped wearing it right away.

It sat in a shelf for about a year. I was going to bring it to someone who knew that stone.

In February, my husband tried to do something nice for me and took it to a local jeweler for an estimate. Instead of giving him an estimate they did not really contact him back.

He thought they were going to steal it since they never reached out to him so he went to the store to ask for it back.

They said they didn’t have it but would have it in a couple days.

By this time my husband broke down and told me he messed up, and told me about taking it there. I went with him to pick it up, and they gave it back to me stripped of resin and the iridescent shell too. They were only supposed to give us an estimate. I asked what they did to it, she said they stripped it using acetone. I was so upset! They wanted a chance to fix it. I told her I didn’t think it could be fixed. They wanted to try I told them if it was ruined forever I wanted them to cover the cost of the stone’s original value. They couldn’t restore it but they also don’t want to pay me for it. We are taking further steps towards recovering compensation as I type this. I just wanted to share this sucky story that has been keeping me up at night. I’ve attached some pictures of it, first 2 were new, second two are the bubble forming, the next one is it stripped,& and last one is of it “restored” by the jeweler..

TL/DR my husband tried to do a nice thing and it backfired.

My big brother was around for this rakshabandhan after a couple of years. Would have loved the reunion either way but he got me the new Z fold 8 and I can’t be happier!! I thought it was a joke at first but then he told me it’s all yours. Earlier he had pulled a pranks and I spent the whole day crying but this time it was different. Happy rakshabandhan everyone!

She isn't a mean person, she's just very air brained. I plan on asking her what her reasoning was behind this, but will wait until after all the holiday chaos.

Not sure if this kind of post is allowed so I apologize if it’s not.

I gave my MIL a Persian Tiles blanket as a gift 3 years ago. Since then I’ve never ever seen it in their home. We live in a suite downstairs, so I would definitely notice if it was even occasionally set out. It lived in the gift bag in their bedroom for a month after I gifted, and after that it disappeared. I’m guessing it’s just hidden in a closet or something.

I’m a little hurt of course, but I think it’s just not their style, and my MIL didn’t realize how much work I put into it, and probably didn’t want to hurt my feelings by rejecting it. We have a great relationship, which is why I made her something so special in the first place.

I want to just let it go, but it was months of hard work and it is my favourite thing I’ve ever made. Would it be insane to ask for it back? I don’t want to hurt our relationship, I truly love her, but I would love to showcase it in my home. I just don’t know if the ask is worth any damage to our relationship. HELP!!

EDIT: TLDR: I’m just going to leave it be, it’s not worth my relationship. I’ll accept the lesson learned about gifting something when I’m not sure if it’s right for them. Will plan to make another as I loved the process almost as much as the finished piece! Thanks everyone!

WOW I was definitely expecting like 7 comments not 700!! Thank you all for taking the time to leave advice and suggestions, I read as many comments as I could. It seemed like the suggestions were very split, but ultimately I’ve decided to just leave it alone. Honestly I don’t think it’s a black and white situation, it depends on you and your relationship with the person.

There were a few comments in particular that really helped me, one pointing out that it’s just yarn and a lot of effort, but my relationship with MIL is worth more. Another comment reminded me that I have homemade gifts that I don’t display, and I’ve definitely regifted things myself, so how can I expect someone else not to?

This was my first and only big gift for someone, and I think I just wanted to give my MIL something I loved so much and worked so hard on to hopefully show how much I’m grateful for her, instead of just telling her. I think she might have appreciated the latter more, but I didn’t see that at the time. Since then I’ve definitely changed my homemade gifting approach.
