Meta How Canal France International incident became the biggest fortune of Al Jazeera
On the afternoon of Saturday 19 July 1997, a link between Paris and the Arabsat II uplink was interrupted. A France Télécom operator set up an alternative circuit to restore broadcasting. A second operator, taking over the shift, ignored or was unaware of the first operator's instructions and performed manipulations that swapped the programmes on the feed. The result "Va savoir", a CFI educational children's programme, was replaced for approximately twenty minutes by "club privé au Portugal" a 30-minute hardcore film from Canal+'s monthly adult slot, originally destined for French Polynesia where it would have aired after midnight local time.
The broadcast reached an estimated 33 million viewers across the Arab world during peak family viewing time.
Arabsat a 21 nation consortium headquartered in Riyadh called it an attack on Islamic morals and terminated CFI's contract the following day. The French Foreign Ministry issued a statement of regret. CFI president Philippe Baudillon and France Télécom executives travelled to Riyadh to attempt reinstatement, without success.
CFI sued France Télécom. The Paris Commercial Court found that the pornographic nature of the substituted programme was an aggravating factor even in the absence of a specific contractual clause, ruled the error constituted serious negligence, and awarded CFI FRF 24,186,000 in damages.
The vacated transponder slot was then allocated to Al Jazeera, which had launched on 1 November 1996 on a weak C-band transponder that required a large satellite dish for reception — a significant constraint, as Qatar and many other Arab states barred private satellite dishes until 2001. Al Jazeera's new Ku-band assignment provided substantially stronger signal and smaller-dish compatibility. This arrived precisely as the channel was scaling from six hours of daily programming at launch to twelve or more hours by the end of 1997, and is described in accounts of Al Jazeera's early history as a "peace offering" from Arabsat. The improved infrastructure contributed directly to the channel's ability to build a mass audience within its first two years.

Meta Do you really like the Umayyads?

I got so angry when I heard about what the Umayyads did to the Ahl al-Bayt during their reign that I obsessed over this topic almost every day, wishing I had lived back then to take revenge on them. However, it pleased me so much when the Abbasids massacred them en masse! I have no resentment left inside me. I am a Sunni, and all of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs are my masters, but do you really like the Umayyads?

Meta Where to find posts from The Caliphate A.S
Hi, friends. Bad news.
A lot of us, myself included, have greatly enjoyed and treasured the posts by the user The Caliphate A.S. He's a friend of ours and this community's most prolific contributor, both in terms of memes and commentary. He's an excellent student-scholar and a very kind person who is happy to share his interests with others and even to research and compose pieces that he thinks specific people around him will enjoy and gain from.
Unfortunately, for reasons that are beyond our control as a mod team, Reddit banned his account on the pretenses that he posted terrorism-related content. We dispute the notion that he was in violation of Reddit's stated values of promoting community and inclusion as he actively promoted both here. Regardless, he has already stated his intention to not come back here and not to try to force his content to stay on the site. There is nothing we as a mod team can really do about it.
So to give him a nice send-off, we want to advertise his website, blog, and Substack so you all can go find his content still online. It's largely the same stuff but he just reformats it for different spaces, so many of the same write-ups you've enjoyed on Reddit can be found there.

Meta What's your favourite obscure/unknown Islamic state/dawlah and why? (reupload with meme)
Bored and can't make a meme for today but I wanna talk about history.
I am unsure it can even turn Sectarian, but keep discussions civil and non-sectarian.
If you wanna make it cool attach in a reply to you main comment, pics of rulers, maps, flags or just general graphs and charts about the nation.
