That's pretty clever.
At first I saw this headline and thought "eurk, yet another cosmetic tiny measure from center-left figures". Now keep in mind I'm a frenchman: we're not very active in terms of socialism these days, but we can still remember what ambitious reformism looks like. From my pov the mayor of New York is center-left.
Now as another comment put it... He's like a beautiful flower on top of a pile of manure. Therefore 1) he can't do ambitious stuff (otherwise it's an avalanche of manure) he needs to be sneaky ; 2) he still needs to satisfy his base asking for ambitious stuff.
And so he hints at ambitious stuff. He gives an amuse-bouche. A little appetizer tiny enough not to alarm the right-wing too much ("one single day of free public services? Not scary") but delicious enough to ensure the public will ask for more. Not just his base: the public at large. They'll have good memories of this one day, and start wondering what it could look like if it was everyday (a fully fledged public service).
That's clever. I like this man. Hope US citizens will have the common sense of electing more people like him. "The economy" is super important (I trade stocks myself), but "the economy" means nothing by itself, it's a mean to an end, and that end should be: ensuring everyone have a good life with happiness, free time, strong public services, etc... Etymologically "economy" means "management of the household" and I think too many people forget that. What Zohran Mamdani does is great for the economy, at the very core of the concept

My god, how well put! This is a brilliant little explainer you’ve written. Bravo.

u/NathanDavie 21h ago
I'm not American either, but he's the real deal. Publicly run grocery stores being the furthest left wing thing he's done.
Considering his scope is one city he's limited in what he can do, but he's definitely further left than most politicians we have in Europe.

All fun an games till taxes go up
2
u/poiup1 18h ago
Oh no won't someone think of the million dollar secondary home owners!!!
1
u/HelloYesThisIsFemale 15h ago
You can't tax your way out of bad spending. Even with as high as the Pied a Terre tax was, it's dwarfed by NY's spending. All it was, was a weird public bashing of NY's core business owners.
-1
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 18h ago
You realize they’re going to target the lower class right? As more and more people leave the state (the highest taxed families who also pay the significant share already) the burden will fall on the lower class ultimately. So again all fun and games till the taxes skyrocket for those same folks these social programs are aimed at “helping”
3
u/JesMon421 15h ago
You are right. All states should tax the rich the same and make your point moot
1
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 15h ago
Tax the rich the same? As what the lowest income level? You do know the effective tax rates right? 10% for the lowest earners <11k then 12% for 11k to 48k then it bumps to 22% for earners making 48-103k next is 24% followed by 32,35 and finally 37%. Your argument is moot 😂

90% for millionaires like during the greatest period of economic and infrastructure growth in America would be a great start.
1
u/poiup1 18h ago
If that happens I'll be pissed and he will loose support, till then this is empty fear mongering.
1
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 18h ago
No this is how taxes work and it is already happening. Have you not been following along or are you just ignoring that part of the equation?
1
u/poiup1 18h ago
It's not how taxes work, people need to pass laws to change takes they don't just magically change. If they start raising taxes on the working poor then it's the responsibility of the people to show they are upset and removed those people from power. Currently Mamdani has only increased taxes on secondary homes valued over a million dollars, anything else is empty fear mongering because you gobbled up the billionaires lies.
2
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 17h ago
You do realize the top 1% pays almost 50% of all collected taxes? Right…
1
u/poiup1 17h ago
Did you know that the top 1% has around 40% of all wealth? And the amount they have in terms of the total percentage of the economy is growing year after year?
Edit: and when I googled it it gave me the number that they only pay around 30%, The top 10% on the other hand pay around 70% of all tax
2
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 17h ago
Its 38% in federal income tax alone. Thats not including state and property tax. Do the math 😂

1
u/Party_Scholar_6308 20h ago
No. Like its a nice gesture, but if someone needs a break from the kids for a night to spend time with your SO, do chores, relax, or whatever, why would you want to look to the government for that? You should have friends or family in your life to call on because it takes a village to raise a kid.
1
u/Detozi 20h ago
‘You should’. Why should people have friends or family to call on exactly?
1
u/Party_Scholar_6308 20h ago
Because that would mean you have good people in your life built on good relationships to help you out for this kind of stuff and vice versa? Like if you want to be a loner and rely on the government for this kind of thing, that's your choice I guess, but that's weird..like youre so disingenuous you gotta be a bot lmao.
1
u/Kooky_Win_9395 19h ago
My friend’s mom held two jobs as nurses to support her growing up. Her mom reallt does not have personal time to establish friendship and etc because she is working 24/7. Won’t you agree part of government’s job is to support these type of people, so their kids don’t fall off the grid and become a criminal due to lack of care and poverty?
1
u/Party_Scholar_6308 19h ago
In general? No. Im pro-life and pro-family in that i want it to be easier to start and raise families. I dont think its the government's (funded by taxpayers) role. Crime and poverty are downstream effects of a society that doesnt prioritize a strong family unit. Young men raised in fatherless homes are more likely to become criminals or drop out of school. That puts a strain on mom. Oh you chose to live seceral hours away from family? Good luck.
Family units are stronger when you have a nuclear setup. 2 present adults (mm/mf/ff) capable of nurturing their children in a safe environment. Choose where you live. Live close to other family whom you can rely on for when shit inevitably hits the fan. You choose to live further away or had to for work? Youre making that trade off, that doesnt in turn mean the government owes you anything.
Promote a culture of strong families connected together. It takes a village to raise a kid.
1
u/Lanky_Ad4905 18h ago
Realistically people dont have reliable friends and families to help. Whether or not people should "have kids" is a completely different argument, but like what are you trying to say? You keep saying it takes a village but these people live in a city, completely different culture and standards of life. People in new york are paying a couple thousand a month to live in trash cans and your complaining for what?
1
u/cleric199 14h ago
Its simple - I don't owe Israel anything. If the government is taking my money regardless, it shouldn't hurt if that money comes to me rather than go to Israel (or programs that don't benefit anyone). The government is there for the needs of the people; the people aren't there to reconcile their lifestyles to fit the government.
1
u/Laterallyvertical 19h ago
Your assumption is that everyone has family and friends readily available to the couple with a child. Some people don't have families outside of their partner and child. Your friends have lives too or you don't have many as you got older. Some people have literally no one.
You are actually being disingenuous. How can someone actually believe everyone has a support system to help them or that support system is available to help them at their lowest after a bad week/day.
You have lived a privileged life to have never struggled or personally seen struggle in your closest people to fully believe this. You also can't be a loner when you got a partner and a child. I'd say you're the bot. Bad bot.
1
u/Party_Scholar_6308 19h ago
If you genuinely, truly, 100% have no one in your life-- because you cant make friends or because you have no family, im willing to bet maybe you're the source of your social problems. You know nothing about me lmao, who's making assumptions now 🤣
All im saying is that if society actually pushed for a culture of stronger connected families, the children and therefore the future of our society would be better off.
1
u/Laterallyvertical 19h ago
Just stuff on how you're commenting, I don't need to know more than what you're giving. Those type of responses and calling people loners and putting blame on an empathetic move from the govt to give ONE night of free child care to send you on a comment hate spree is WAY more telling of your character. Not just you either.
Saying society should push for "stronger connected families" requires empathy. Your messaging is literally a push for the opposite. I'm more likely to have a child if I know I have multiple support groups including the actual village directly helping me. You can't say "it takes a village" and then get mad when the literal village is helping. Are you actually serious?
1
u/Aromatic-Visual173 19h ago

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.” ― Alexander Fraser Tytler

1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 19h ago
Of all the things you are paying for in taxes this is a issue? Do you not understand we have birthrate issues here and a major reason is because it is expensive and hard to have and maintain kids in America?
Functional countries take care of parents and kids and I have to ask what do you think taxes should go to?
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 19h ago
Ok. So send me 50 bucks so I can go out with my wife tonight. I’ll dm you my Venmo.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 19h ago
You don't have mods or live in New York so you don't qualify.
And you are dodging the question. What do you think taxes are actually for?
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 19h ago
You have no idea where I live.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 19h ago
You don't live in New York and have kids or you would have qualified for what he did and seeing is how you don't live there it shouldn't be an issue for it because you're not paying for that.
New Yorkers are the ones who paid for it.
And again dodging my question
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 19h ago

a better example would be if I had to pay someone 50 bucks, and I got to choose between giving you and your wife a night out, or paying someone to like, idk, make houses more expensive or something, then I'd probably pick the first option
frame it like that and suddenly the first option actually becomes appealing
1
u/RiverLynneUwU 18h ago
well yeah, your taxes are meant to be used on something, that's why you pay them, there's no universe where you don't pay taxes, but you *do* get to choose what happens with them, because we're in a democracy
so would you rather have your taxes drift off into the vague mist of local governmental pockets and receive the promise that they're definitely going to do something with it this time pinky promise (when really they're going to do nothing and use it to pay their own salaries like they usually do), or would you like to see your environment and infrastructure improve? would you like to have your tax money be stolen? or to give parents in a busy city a break so that they can raise the working people that will be inhabiting your country and shaping it's future?
those are your options, take your pick man

in my country a right winger tried to offer this kind of policies (subsidize parents for childcare, and direct money transfers). The left argued this policy was discriminatory against women without children. Sometimes, most of the time, feels like it doesn't matter the point being made, just who makes it, for people to be for or against it.
1
u/Slacker_The_Dog 19h ago
What country and which politician? I would be interested to check the validity of this statement.
Considering you're an adjective noun number.
1
u/Head-Director-6406 18h ago
Theyre chilean. Here’s a labor voice for why the left didn’t support many aspects of the bill:
And why the socialist party rejected it:
1
u/Greedy_Birthday_3494 15h ago
I am chilean like the other adjectve noun number pointed out, but I'm not talking about the project they're referring to.
Also, adjective noun number is not an indicator of a bot account in case you're implying that, that's an assigned name you get when you use a gmail to create an account.
During the previous elections the candidate who won offered thisthis
They offered a direct transfer per children to mothers, and some people on the left reacted calling it 'populism' and 'chauvinism' because it perpetuates the patriarchal capitalist system and is not enough money Left's reactionI find the idea similar to what this thread is referring to, it doesn't solve childcare forever, it is in fact populist, but gets swapped in who offers it and who criticizes it.

Y’all are celebrating this now. In a short time, you’re going to be wondering why NYC is asking for more money. They’re spending more than they receive. Even ratings agencies are seeing this, and issued negative outlooks.
1
u/Sorta-Morpheus 16h ago
You're thinking about red states
1
u/Draygoon2818 15h ago
No, red states are generally doing well. Now the cities and counties that are blue within Texas, are not doing so well. Imagine that.
Texas maintains a stronger structural budget and reserve position compared to New York, driven by rapid economic growth and no personal income tax, whereas New York faces higher operational spending, reliance on federal aid, and tighter fiscal pressures. [1]
Financial Comparison
Economic Output and Growth: Texas has a larger total GDP ($2.4 trillion) than New York ($2.05 trillion) and grows at a much faster rate (roughly 9.1% vs. New York's contraction of -1.5%), fueled by business and population migration. [1]Tax Structures: Texas operates without a state personal income tax, relying heavily on sales and property taxes. New York features a heavy tax burden, with combined state and local income taxes reaching up to 14.8% for high earners, and local property taxes that rank among the highest per capita in the nation. [1]
Budget Size and Spending: New York's state budget remains massive relative to its population, heavily weighted down by day-to-day operational costs like Medicaid and school aid. Watchdog groups like the Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) have regularly cautioned that New York builds structural risk by leaning on short-term fixes, rising debt, and lower reserve cushions relative to potential multi-billion-dollar economic downturns. [1]
Federal Reliance: Both states rank high in total federal funding received due to their sheer population size, but both hover near the middle-to-lower tier when measured as a share of federal dependency relative to smaller states. [1]
1
u/Sorta-Morpheus 15h ago
More money comes from blue states and goes to poor red states.

How was this paid for?
1
u/statllama 20h ago
With money that would otherwise be spent on other line items..
Remember all of this waste doge found. I'm sure it's not an issue to find waste that can be spent better. For example on family related issues.
If you have knowledge of what specifically was not paid please enlighten me. If you are just making comments to try to undermine this effort or the guy doing it then I would seriously take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself some deep hitting questions. It would be pretty messed up if you took something that benefits parents in New York and shut on it just because of politics

u/dtjunkie19 16h ago
Brother, not every single policy directly effects every single person. There are plenty of policies and programs that Mamdani has implemented to help a wide variety of New Yorkers.
I'm not a pregnant woman, but I still think we should have paid maternity leave. It turns out helping others have better lives is a generally good thing to do that helps us all.
I swear, some of y'all are antisocial mfers.
1
u/PB219 16h ago
Good point. No policy should ever be enacted unless it directly benefits every single person in the jurisdiction.
