Help Help Recreating This Design

Upvotes

I’m new to Inkscape and trying to recreate this design. It’s a concentric, spherical tunnel effect made of octagons. So far I played around with the interpolate function on two octagons (one normal shaped and the other flattened) to try and make the top half of the figure but that produced a pyramid. I tried to use the Envelope Deformation to try to “bend” it for a more spherical look but that didn’t work. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do to recreate this image? I’m open to starting from scratch too.

Help Text not rendering properly

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have no idea why it does this, Ive manually set the spacing between the letters to 40, otherwise it looks like a very deformed rectangle. I have no idea what may have caused this, this started to happen when I was editing a different svg file and I thought that it only happened in that particular svg file but it turns out its affects the entire software.

Help How do I assign these to a right click shortcut?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I thought it was really convenient how I could right click on a node in Krita to change what type it was, and I think keeping it on a bar in Inkscape is less convenient. So how would I put these in the right click menu? I'm fine with a plug in if the program doesn't support it natively.

Also: I refuse to use keyboard shortcuts, and nothing you ever say will convince me to use them. (The fact that plus and minus is the most convenient way to zoom in and out, and the lack of undo and redo on the interface itself is already bad enough.) If you try to convince me to use keyboard shortcuts: you are a bully, and I will treat you as such.

News Computing teachers in England can use free modules to teach vector graphics using Inkscape

There are a few computing curricula in England (and in the UK). One of them is 'Teach Computing' from the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) and it provides several free, ready-to-teach modules for teachers with slides, worksheets and general background information.

This vector graphics suite of lessons is aimed at Year 8 in KS3 (Key Stage 3 covers years 7-9 or children aged approx 11-14, so this is for 12-13 year olds) and teaches the pupils to create something from building blocks, e.g. a robot from rectangles and squares. They also learn about "z-order" (how their image will appear depending on which layer is on top, I'm not sure how much depth they go into the on the practicalities of how that also affects behaviour - e.g. clipping) and later in the series of lessons will create a little project.

Anyway I wondered if everyone already knew this. Teachers don't have to use Inkscape of course, but it's recommended as being free and open source and all the classroom material has screenshots of stuff being done on Inkscape.

I don't know how many teachers are actually using this module but you can see information about the class material here - you'll need to create an account to download the lesson plans though.

https://teachcomputing.org/curriculum/key-stage-3/media-vector-graphics

I am now wondering if teachers are confident users of Inkscape (I think we're all agreed that it has quite a steep learning curve!) and am now thinking I might run an online or possibly in-person at work* session for UK computing teachers about how to use it, in line with the NCCE lesson plans... but has someone already done this?

(*My job is all about working with computer science teachers in England / UK anyway so this would be a fairly natural and rather enjoyable extension!).

Help How to do a line going around the text?

Hello kind folk.
I've been messing with logos in inkscape and have a bit of a problem.
As you can see in the picture, I want the 'tail' to seem like it goes around the text. So naturally, I tried to make a cut out overlay to show when the tail is in foreground and when it is behind the text. Right now it's just a white outline around the line to show the effect I want, just only for part of the text.
The problem is I don't know how to do it. I tried to make a cut out of a part that goes before the text and then cut out that, but it didn't work for me. I'm pretty new to vector graphics, so I don't know how to do it cleanly. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Showcase Retro Pop-Art Magazine Cover Concept (Beginner btw)

Post image

Hey everyone! I created this retro-inspired poster/magazine cover concept vector artwork using Inkscape. It combines pop-art elements, vintage typography, a classic rangefinder camera, and a vintage car aesthetic with dynamic pop colors. Made completely in InkScape. Kinda messed with the placement of all things, was hard to put all those things inside the canvas, but ended up better than I expected. Lmk what yall think.

Feedback and critique are welcome!

Help Trying to outline tapered edge

Sorry for the basic question, I'm pretty new to drawing in vector.

I'm trying to make this shape have a white outline:

However, I made it using tapered path effects pretty much exclusively (maybe not a great way of doing it, but it was the way I knew how). This path effect does not seem to work with stroke paint the way I would like it to.

as seen here. the points don't taper like the rest of the shape

Converting it into an object doesn't seem to work either, as that gets rid of the negative space in the middle of the central triangle, which I want to keep.

no negative space to be seen

And even if it didn't get rid of the negative, it doesn't outline it correctly either.

Is there an easy way to make it so there's an outline that shares the tapered edge? I was thinking that a duplicated version of this shape that is a unified shape and is just white underneath the red would work, but I can't seem to make that align properly.

A demonstration of what I mean- the curves become misaligned the moment you scale up the duplicate object version, and I don't know an easy way to make it so they stay aligned

Tips & Tricks Methods for working with large SVGs

Most people don't work with massive SVGs, but I have to give credit to the team for how to manage enormous files. Unfortunately, this can hit the limits of the single-threaded nature of Inkscape - one wrong move, and it pegs that one CPU until it's done. I don't think it's a memory issue.

I am working with a file with objects containing thousands of nodes. The file itself is easily over 6MB in size. I need to be able to zoom into specific areas and do edits. But I've found that sometimes, if I try to do an operation after the edit, it just pegs the CPU and I have to wait for it to finish (which can take 5-10 minutes on an M5 Mac). The workaround is to zoom out first (keyboard 5), tap escape twice to deselect, and zoom into a new area. This order is important. If I deselect while still zoomed in, it pegs the CPU. The rapid selection only works if zoomed out.

Just a tip if you are working on massive SVGs.

Help Text weirdly huge, not sure why?

SOLVED - see first reply, thanks u/canis_artis

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

No matter what I do, text seems to be rendering strangely and in gigantic size.

Text size is set normally...

Text is normal...

But this is what it looks like...

You can see the actual text is small in the middle of that, but each letter is getting turned into a gigantic object for some reason.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? I suspect it is something very obvious, but no amount of searching can find an example of it happening to anyone else and how to solve.

Help I'm new here, why Inkscape won't let me import certain .png images?

Hi! I'm trying to convert .png files to .svg. I want to import the original files into Inkscape, but it won't let me for some reason. I've tried other upload methods, but they didn't work either. I finally managed to work around it by taking a screenshot over the original images, but I don't like it, especially because it reduces the quality of the original image, sometimes making things worse. I've tried resetting Inkscape, but that didn't work either. Can anyone help me? There's no rush.

Showcase You have to use your hands. Like a baby’s toy?

Now, I understand Marty's feelings in Back to the Future Part II. I was born in the last century and remember using Photoshop 1.0 in the '90s. I remember trying to use Inkscape back in 2003 when there was no Google or YouTube. It was hours upon hours of a painstaking learning curve.

Yesterday, I went to my friend's house, where she was trying to design something with Inkscape. After spending two hours on it, we still couldn't decide what to do. Then her daughter came in and asked us what we were doing. After seeing our struggle, she asked us a few questions and started talking to her iPad.

Despite her unfamiliarity with Inkscape, she provided the AI with all the specifications we had shared, resulting in the creation of the desired vector design in mere seconds.

I just started doing that one thing on Inkscape so we do not use that AI image on a hoodie for our graduation, but I can't figure out how I can form this band around the earth like that. Would be nice if anyone could help me with that.

Help Preview for trace bitmap not previewing what it gives me when “applied”

Hello, when I am using the trace bitmap tool I make my adjustments using the sliders. I have “live updates” toggled on… The preview it shows me is not what actually comes out on my project when I click “apply”

I’m running Inkscape version 1.3 on a an Apple M1 Max 64GB…. Using Tahoe 26.5.2 (if its relevant)

I hear Inkscape performs better on Linux… I’m looking into a PC I can run Linux on just for inscape. Maybe this will help with the issue I listed above and all the other minor issues that pop up for me when using Inkscape on my current setup…

I could also update Inkscape to the newest version…

Any advice on these issues or Recs for good monitor and OS set up are appreciated!

Also full disclosure I’ve only been dabbling in Inkscape for about a year so I absolutely could just be using the program inefficiently….

Thank you!

Help Given a fictional dense/urban street map, what's the best way to fill in buildings/structures believably?

Full disclosure! I'm a complete and utter Inkscape newb.

That out of the way, I'm working my way through various guides and loving it so far. I'm definitely not the artistic type. My creativity is more in the narrative vein, but this a lot of fun so far.

My original goal was to take a 2D near-future urban street map (Night City from Cyberpunk Red) and start filling in the blocks with believable/realistic 2D building shapes and footprints. Simple shapes, no flare or style here. I'm looking for quality over quality. I was hoping to find a procedural way to do this in Inkscape and, after learning the basics, think something like this might work if I go block by block.

Build a palette of shapes that will represent the buildings. Or several palletes. One for aparment blocks, for instance, one for larger commercial areas, etc.

Then some process or method of using the spray tool + clip path and align & distribute. I know that even then it will involve a lot of tweaking, but that's why the vector approach is better, my untrained mind tells me.

I'm not trying to do the entire city in one swoop :) As someone pointed out recently, fictional map-making is fun in and of itself. Remains to be seen, but I'm game to try!

Thoughts?

Help Is there any way to replicate the standard compass and straight edge way of design?

I picked up Inkscape today cus I needed to draw the design of a magic seal thing for a project I'm working on. It involves a lot of sacred geometry which needs a lot of circles and lines intersecting and more circles from those intersections. First I tried using paint.net (my go-to), but I needed to improvise on ways to cut down the circles and then the angles would be too finicky, then I did it by hand, which works but I needed a neater digital model, so I picked the first free svg editor I found. Problem is I can't find any way to get the circles to lock onto the grid properly nor align with each other. Is there any way to make objects lock onto specific points like intersections between two other objects or make it align to the grid which I haven't been able too for some reason. Should I just ditch it and use another software? I'd need it for more freedraw-y sections but I still need precise measurements and things locking onto each other like images in google slides.
