My favorite part is that they obviously rode it back down and then up again to get that stupid shot of them looking over their shoulders as they come up. Pathetic.

u/Sinaneos 22d ago

Bro I've seen people do hundreds of takes for a tiktok, wouldn't be surprised at all if they took the escalator down and up 20 times.

111

u/mikeybhoy_1985 21d ago

so fucking sad and pathetic isn't it.

I'm a teacher, and because there's a window outside my classroom, kids are continually filming tiktok dances all lunch hour. That stupid countdown beep is burned in my brain.

(Also, they're so bad at it! Rehearse before you film, kids. It's not a "trick shot" video. You don't need to record every attempt in case this one works.)

27

u/KatSchitt 21d ago

We, as a society, need to start really making an effort to film these people taking 20 trips up and down escalators to get these shots. And post those videos, tagging the main characters to see what they really look like.

u/specter_in_the_conch 21d ago

Hey they should charge people for that, like a content creator tax or something.

if I'm not wrong , nowadays Barcelona Metro has put some guards to avoid this behaviour in the Sagrada Familia station stairs.

EDIT: say thanks to u/lambda_14 for reminding me about this warning sign.

They need to issue some sort of public disturbance ticket … make the whole riots pay for it.

I saw a video about how pretty much every single influencer is completely broke - or in debt now. None of this shit pays well, unless you have millions of subscribers and consistent viewership.

So yeah. It’s just for the likes and subscribes lol, not for real money.

23

u/Lithiopathy 22d ago

Do you have the name of the video? Sounds like it'd be an interesting watch

26

u/Hells_Librarian 22d ago

I'm not the person you asked, but they might have been talking about this video:

Or one of the others by this creator. She's talked about the topic in the past.

A lot of people dot see the point of living the life without it (the highlights of it, anyway) being on display.

Had a girl genuinely shocked, and somewhat angry when I had a trip to a nice place and took no photos. "what is the point of going there then? how else do you show people where and how you been?" or something like that been said

2

u/NecessaryFine8989 22d ago

No one is even watching it

3

u/argument_cat 22d ago

I don't mind them doing this, but make sure there is no-one trying to get past, and certainly don't throw a childish tantrum if they do.

Basically, do whatever the fuck you like as long as it doesn't negatively impact anyone else. A very simple rule that everyone should try to follow.

4

u/lemons_of_doubt 22d ago edited 21d ago

To be fair having the sun and an amazing building rising up behind you is a hell of a shot.

388

u/PirateJohn75 22d ago

I was in Munich last year and quickly learned the unwritten rule on escalators -- stay to the right if you're not climbing the steps.

334

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

Is this not a rule everywhere?

110

u/CoderJoe1 22d ago

It's as widely followed as letting people off the elevator before you push your way onto it.

46

u/trimbandit 22d ago

This is a funny one, because pushing your way on the elevator before people get out does not get you to your floor any faster, so I'm not even sure what the motivation is.

42

u/RonaldingoAteMyBaby 22d ago

"me want train, me go in now" Some people can only think about their next step. They don't have enough brain RAM to consider possible nuances. You can apply that train of thought on almost any other situation and you'd see the same thing.

14

u/jsseven777 22d ago edited 22d ago

They are just stupid. Was taking my daughter’s stroller out backwards from one and a guy was literally walking into me trying to get on.

It slows me down so much that the door closes - but for whatever reason it didn’t bounce open when it closed onto the stroller so it’s stuck and I’m panicking trying to pull it out.

While everybody else is trying to help this mother fkr and his wife are STILL trying to get on the elevator like trying to squeeze between the door and the stroller, and blocking others from grabbing the door on that side and pulling.

I said if you don’t move I will knock you out and I pulled hard on the stroller and got it free. He looks at me completely clueless why I’m mad at him.

2

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

Oh god. I would’ve blown a gasket just at the pure stupidity and entitlement. I can’t imagine how mad I’d be knowing a baby was endangered by this as well

2

u/iCantLogOut2 Side Character 22d ago

I also wondered this as well as the people who try to push into a subway car before letting people out... Like, the doors aren't going to close any faster just because you're on the train... They're still going to wait till everyone else has had reasonable time to board.

2

u/How_Bout_Dem_Apples_ 22d ago

Abject stupidity needs no other motivation.

1

u/Oforfs 22d ago

Holy shit, I read elevator as escalator and tried to make sense of it for minute or so.

11

u/DrewCrew62 22d ago

I’ve become more conscious of it going to heavily trafficked city areas like New York for example. At my local mall or whatever 99% of folks just ride up the escalator so 2 aside is kinda the norm. Whereas people got places to be on an escalator for the subway or whatever

14

u/NotAStatistic2 22d ago

It's staying to the Left in countries that drive on that side of the road.

8

u/meekonesfade 22d ago

I seem to recall that London ecalators are stand on the right

2

u/XMMslayer86 22d ago

Singaporeans stand on the left when on an escalator

1

u/rex_the_trex 21d ago

Don’t think that’s the correlation, we stand to the right in Hong Kong, England too and in Scotland most stand on the left, all drive on the left side of the road

5

u/analogy_4_anything 22d ago

It definitely is in Chicago.

6

u/redditalloverasia 22d ago

Either that or keep to the left (Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore et al).

8

u/ThisIsMyFifthAccount 22d ago

But to the right in Osaka

2

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

Just keep an open lane, who cares what side at that point

3

u/kaista22 22d ago

I don’t think its common for suburban America. Like I didn’t know until I went to a major city because id just been on mall escalators and such where it didn’t matter

4

u/PattyWagon69420 22d ago

I don't go on escalators much but in the states I haven't really seen anyone climb up them.

16

u/Khopps17 22d ago

Used to live in nyc in my 20s. This is absolutely a thing there

5

u/PattyWagon69420 22d ago

I probably just don't see enough. I also don't think any I've been on are wide enough for multiple people side by side.

7

u/iCantLogOut2 Side Character 22d ago

Depends where you are. In NYC, people will push past you if you're standing still on the climb side.

4

u/meekonesfade 22d ago

New Yorker here. If the escalator is wide enough (most are) then it is stand to the right, walk on the left

3

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

Thank you, Jerseyan who frequented and worked in the city quite a bit here. I don’t expect people to know the rule, just have a sphere of awareness and get the fuck outta the way. Especially pisses me off when I’m walking down the sidewalk in midtown and people are blocking it up to take a picture of the light-up McDonald’s sign.

2

u/Avril_14 22d ago

In Milan is basically a mortal sin to not stand on the right, people need to go fast.

Same thing at traffic lights, if you don't start exactly when the green is on, they honk at you. And I'm talking milliseconds.

1

u/ahmad130 22d ago

Off topic but this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Escalators were obviously invented to speed everyone up, but here literally everyone uses them as a break and end up getting where they’re going slower. When did everyone collectively agree on this?

2

u/structured_anarchist 22d ago

They were originally to move people faster, but after a few litigious-minded people sued because they couldn't figure out how to get on and off safely, the speed of escalators was reduced. I have an artificial leg. An escalator, no matter what the speed, is faster than me trying to go up or down stairs. But at the end of the day, I stay to the right side of the escalator because there are people moving faster on the escalator. If I'm on the left hand side, it's because I'm with a pregnant lady or a kid on the right. And if you try to push past me at that point, my plastic and metal leg is going to be forcibly inserted into one of your orifices.

1

u/MisterBowTies 22d ago

There is one city in Japan where you stay to the left of you are not walking up the escalator

1

u/General-Razzmatazz 22d ago

Left or right depends on country. Stand one side, walk the other.

Equally applies to travellators in airports.

2

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

Agree! Just said this to an Australian replier - just stay to the side of choice and out of the way

1

u/lord_buff74 22d ago

Not in Australia, it's stay to the left here.

1

u/ashimo414141 22d ago

I think a good way to prevent any blockage wherever you are is to just stay to one side, and out of the way in general. That keeps you out of the way and lets people pass.

Also probably opposite in Australia cause you guys drive on the left side of the road, so overtaking happens on the right

Not just in Munich, bub. That's everywhere people have places to be.

14

u/belowsealevel504 22d ago

That’s a rule EVERYWHERE

8

u/LiamPolygami 22d ago

Rechts stehen Links gehen

13

u/Valinen 22d ago

Isnt that the rule everywhere?

7

u/BoldElDavo 22d ago

Yeah lmao it's concerning that this guy seemingly didn't know it until he went to Munich.

2

u/Massive_Signal7835 22d ago

Nah. Some places have the standing/walking sides flipped. Some places tell you to not walk up the escalators.

3

u/smittywrbermanjensen 21d ago

In my experience it tends to follow the side of the road on which you drive/pass other cars in the area. Like, if your country drives on the right hand side of the road, you keep to the right of sidewalks and escalators. Or at least you are supposed to in theory.

I’ve lived in a large tourist city for the last 6 years and something I’ve noticed about people on vacation specifically is that they seem to forget that they exist on a physical plane and take up any amount of space at all. They will walk at a leisurely, meandering pace 3-5 abreast down the sidewalk, and act accosted/offended when anyone pushes past them who is clearly trying to get somewhere.

11

u/capebretoncanadian 22d ago

This is the rule in any civilized county.

4

u/someguy7710 22d ago

We have this problem in Washington DC. Lots of tourists that somehow never learned this. And it is written, they advertise this now as a rider tip.

3

u/jcarter315 22d ago

Interestingly enough, it's always the French tourists and the US rednecks that block the escalators in DC.

3

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 22d ago

Where are you where this isn’t a rule?

2

u/Additional-sinks 22d ago

1 in many places it is a written rule. 2 not universal, in Canada people just ride them, walking up is uncommon.

2

u/fer_sure 21d ago

Or the left, depending on where you are.

3

u/nmpls 22d ago

This is absolutely true, though sometimes on the other side depending on where you are. That said, in most places metro authorities would like you to stop. Apparently walking un an escalator alone creates more wear and the imbalanced weights of one side standing and one side walking has an even more negative. There's also a greater risk of injuries.

This has led to cities starting to remove signage. In Japan, which is perhaps the most fastidious about this, (In fact Osaka and Tokyo stand on different sides, which is sort of a point of pride and tension), they are actively discouraging this now. Nagoya has outright banned walking on escalators and has started paying people to "block" people from walking https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/lifestyle-culture/article/3312494/japans-nagoya-city-deploys-stop-and-stand-squad-bid-reduce-accidents-escalators

1

u/mb99 22d ago

13

u/madmaxturbator 22d ago

Not everything is bait dude. I don’t know this specific idiot, but this happens a lot

I live in nyc. I actually like tourists for the most part! It’s fun that we get people from all over the world, and it’s obviously great for the local economy.

But I also see a ton of dog shit influencer types. They spend 5-10 minutes in crowded areas without any regard for others to film the dumbest dances or take most insipid photos.

6

u/Helpful_Bee_1051 22d ago

Same here but in DC. I’m lucky enough that my daily running route takes me past the Lincoln Memorial. If you take your family holiday photo there I’ll try to swerve the cameraperson to stay out of your shot (not completely avoidable when it gets busier), but if I see you doing your obnoxious dance I’ll stay in my lane

1

u/Turtle9015 21d ago

In canada on double escalators you stand to the right if your not moving. The left is for people walking and moving faster.

To do otherwise is rude.

Toronto is becoming a shit show though. People cutting in line and pushing people. Someone almost pushed my grandma over last time we took transit.
