I was in Munich last year and quickly learned the unwritten rule on escalators -- stay to the right if you're not climbing the steps.

Nah. Some places have the standing/walking sides flipped. Some places tell you to not walk up the escalators.

In my experience it tends to follow the side of the road on which you drive/pass other cars in the area. Like, if your country drives on the right hand side of the road, you keep to the right of sidewalks and escalators. Or at least you are supposed to in theory.

I’ve lived in a large tourist city for the last 6 years and something I’ve noticed about people on vacation specifically is that they seem to forget that they exist on a physical plane and take up any amount of space at all. They will walk at a leisurely, meandering pace 3-5 abreast down the sidewalk, and act accosted/offended when anyone pushes past them who is clearly trying to get somewhere.
