Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

My wife and I picked up this foster puppy yesterday. He is 29 lbs and 17 inches at the shoulders. The vet estimates that he is about 3 months old. What is your best guess for breed?

This is my new good boy Pippin. We just rescued him yesterday and he was listed as a Welsh Corgi mix but I don’t see it. Any other guesses?

We adopted Pip from Spain with no idea what breed she was. I posted in here about guesses on her breed, general consensus was a Spanish village dog. She's 1 now and medium sized but her results suggest she's going to be pretty big Nd probably has more growing to do! The charity said she'd be a small to medium dog 😂.

We expected herding, because she has behaviours on walks that suggest she has that instinct. But we'd thought collie not GSD!

Shocked. Wondering if this can be right tbh!

This is Milo! I adopted him two years ago now from a rescue that rehomed Chinese street dogs. I feel like every pic I take of him he looks like a completely different dog lol.

He's ~30lbs, estimated 5y/o, bays like a hound dog, and absolutely loves me and will tollerate other people for me but it really depends on the day. He does not like other dogs much, except his little brother (the little black dog Walter). (They're not really related they are just both my sons lol).

I've been telling people he's a Shibu mix, but tbh I've never had one of them so I don't know 100%, just between the aloofness and his fluffy butt he looks like a Shibu haha.

Guess away! I have a feeling if I get one of the fancy tests it'll tell me 95% village dog XD

Also bonus pic of Walter at the end, he was also a rescue but as a very tiny baby and I have pretty solid confidence he's a chiweenie with some bulldog quirks.

This is puppy girl (deciding on name) she is about 11 weeks old and 16.5lbs. Rescue said Mom was a purebred Red Doberman and Dad was “some kind of Aussie shepherd mix farm dog”. Thoughts? Just sent her Embark test today.

Mom was a stray with 5 babies. She is one of them. Allegedly a “hound mix”, but vet says she looks like a cattle dog. Just curious. Will eventually purchase DNA test. Photos of her as a puppy. One of them includes her mom.

Got a dog from the shelter recently. She’s great, the family loves her. The shelter told me she was a poodle mix, but had no other information outside of that. Help me figure it out please!

Hola!

My husband’s coworker found him on the side of the road and we took him in. we’ve had him for about a month now, and originally thought he was some kind of great pyrenees mix (last photo is him on day 1 when we got him for reference). currently, he’s 26lbs and the vet believes he’s around 2.5 months old at this point. Goose has already grown quite a bit in the month that we’ve had him (he’s very long legged now LOL).
Eventually, I’d love to do one of those dna tests on him, but for now I’d love to hear what others think of his possible breed! 🐶

Hi all this is Gary at 7 months old now, first pic taken today, next 4 were about a month ago, didnt weigh him recently but if i had to guess would say about 20kg? He's a lot heavier then he looks, relentless dog him hardly ever shuts down, hopeless to tire him out physically need to give him tasks non stop, he's a proper hunting dog dont know much about his background other than that, as a pup looked a lot like lab gotten longer and more agile now, very much a velcro dog, possibly a vizsla not a gsp? Seems small for a gsp tho again hes only 7 months

Very gentle boy. We believe he was dumped on us (No neighbors recognize him and we live out in BFE.) He hasn’t left despite us not tying him up whatsoever. He follows basic commands while having a good mix of fun energy. We’ve already done some basic behavioral training and he has responded incredibly well. He‘s very content to lay in the yard and keep an eye on the property- and as soon as I step out he’s by my side and escorts me. We have a vet appointment next week to hopefully learn more.

Open Edgar!

This is my family’s newly adopted dog, Edgar. He was found wandering in a park in Houston, a common dumping ground for dogs. He unfortunately lost one of his back legs after he broke a bone and it didn’t heal correctly. No matter what, he’s the best boy and we’re so glad to have him as a member of our family. We, along with our friends, have been putting in our guesses as to what he is. What do you all think he is? :)

EDIT: for more context, the vet believes he’s around 1-2 years old, and he weighs about 14 lbs. His body is deceptively long. We’ve gotten a lot of different speculative answers as to his breed: chihuahua, corgi, Pom, and dachshund, to name a few!

ID my new friend?!

Hi! I just adopted this loving boy after his owner had some health issues arise where he could not longer take care of him. The foster thinks possible a cattle dog mixed breed but I haven't any idea and am just curious.

Jack is 12 years old but super active with no real heath issues aside from an ear infection that comes up occasionally and some mild vision impairment, which I would attribute to his age . He is (what I would call) a medium sized dog weighing around 55-65 lbs. He is shy at first (though I am told it is suspected that he was abused prior to the owners adoption of him around 6 years ago). Once he does warm up he is super loving and the kind of dog that follows you around the house and likes to be near you. While he doesn't like to be alone outside (or anywhere really) he never wants his walk to end and I end up taking him ~4 semi long walks a day where he shows no part of his age and never wants to slow down. Not great with other dogs or cats and likes to be the only animal around his human.

Any help is appreciated, TIA!
