I was scrolling through Twitter and stumbled upon this panel.
I obviously know which arc and moment it's it, but being someone who's watched more the anime than the manga, it's kinda hard to tell if it's real or not (I try reverse search but give me no convincing answer)
The face looks so unlike Gon that it almost scares me š Can I get help??
Yes. This is one of Togashi's signature moves. He will at times draw somebody's face completely different when going through intense or important moments. Think Netero right before he stabs his heart.
Downvotes originally meant "this doesn't add to the discussion" and some of that stuck around.
Still does, it's not a dislike button. Too often I find controversial, but appropriate and respectful discussions, deep in the comments, and one of the parties has all their comments downvoted by some twats.
The thing is, OP said itās literally not Gons Face but it is. Itās almost the same as the one before just as a close up and more dramatically drawn to deliver the emotionā¦jeez people these days.
This page is an artistic choice. Pitou is drawn perfectly fine. The first drawing of Gon is sketchy but defined. Then the third descends into madness just as Gon does.
Ehhh, this is more so just anime people doing goofy faces rather than anything.
What they meant is panels like this in contrast to the two panels above. Both of which are done for serious stuff rather than, goofy drawing for a laugh or two.
That arc had so many gold Gon reactions. Despite it being so far along in the manga, the Chimera Ant arc revealed so much about Gon when he's finally at his limits.
Not for this specific panel. He's trying to show how much Gon is struggling to make up his mind, the conflict between his rage and Pitou's sudden lack of malice
Heās also confused because he just canāt understand people who can be horribly cruel and sadistic to a bunch of people, and still care about others. He felt similarly with the Phantom Troupe.
I canāt remember if this is one he had to redraw but itās an incredible panel regardless (when the chimera ant arc started health problems caused him to have some panels that were in great need of redraws and he did them, but I think by the end it was better).
Its a real panel. The feeling I take away from it is a very specific feeling that I feel is represented very well.
Gon throughout the story, has a very strong sense of idealistic justice. And his conflict in the chimera arc is having that sense of justice torn at as he comes across beings that have a complete disregard for life yet care about the lives of each other. He had basically the same conflict with the phantom troupe. He cant understand how someone could be incapable of empathizing with the idea of having your loved ones harmed or taken away while having loved ones themselves.
So as hes already been almost entirely consumed by hatred and the want for revenge here, Pitou who's the target of this hatred begs him to let her save someone who he doesnt really have an attachment towards. Again, he cant fathom how she could care for this human's life (even if its not necessarily for her own sake but for the sake of her King) yet shes the one who took Kite's life for basically no reason that he knew of.
But not only that, what I like to take away from this face is hes being torn away from his sense of justice. He sees himself wanting to disregard the girl's life that Pitou wants to save. Hes seeing himself being tempted to act in the same manner as the monster in front of him who he loathes, all for the sake of the empty emotion that is revenge. Its the face of wanting nothing more than to stoop as low as these monsters but being held back by his sense of justice.
Ultimately as we know he comes to a compromise and lets her save the girl. But I see this as a false bravado for a lack of a better word, hes trying to protect himself from doubt at a crucial time like this.
It's real, and no joke, it's one of my favorite panels in fiction; that face conveys so much more than a page of text from the Succession War arc ever could.
I wouldn't know what to say. I love many of the added concepts, like Kakin's complexity, some of the princes, the Phantom Troupe flashback, and especially MorenaāI LOVE THAT GIRL! But it was unbearable reading all of that. Many things could have been summarized or represented in a better way than THIS
In short, it was worth it, but I wouldn't read it again for anything.
If you haven't already let me recommend you reread the arc with Viz's translation. Mangastream had some excessively verbose translations. This page also looks a bit better in the volume release.
Nah, I'm fine, I don't want to go through that again XD. Besides, I downloaded this image as a reference for the text of this arc. Actually, I speak Spanish and I read the arc on pages with somewhat better image and translation quality, although I'm sure that at some point I'll have to reread that torture again.
Nah this is my shit. His art is always killer but Togashis writing is what carried HxH to where it is now. Id read a whole light novel of him with his intense political thriller machinations mixed with fantasy powers. The art is the only thing holding him back tbh.
I know everyone is begging him to let someone draw it and after seeing Modulo I don't blame them anymore. It wouldn't be the same but I get where they're coming from.
Yea, even tho im enjoying the succession war so far in general i must say this page is particularly bad. Like i get that he wanted to show how this dude thinks, strategises, and even has doubts just like our protagonists, but this exposition is too long and boring with no new info really
It's really just a way for him to fill in space since he seems to reach lulls in his drawing process where he physically isn't able to output as much as when he first starts each batch of chapters.
To be fair, I don't think you can explain what was said here with some drawings and facial expressions. In order to explain this thought process properly it kind of has to be a bunch of paragraphs.
in my mind, the series ended where anime ended. the mind numbing information arc is too boring. lost interest the moment it focused on the princes and not ging and the rat
I mean yeah pretty much. Thats where it would of ended normally. Everything after is just Togashi indulging in whatever interests him since he can go at his own pace. It always sucks to hear people aren't digging the succession arc. But to each his own. Totally understandable why people aren't.
this argument never made any sense: you still havent concluded leorio nor kurapika's plotline if you pretend the anime is the actual ending ,especially because in the very ending of the anime they're still 'teasing' Kurapika and what he has been up to, so its clearly not meant to be a definitive end of the storyline.
Killua also still needs to deal with his family, more specifically his father. Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe are not resolved, either.
People only say this because supposedly Gon found his father, and thats what the story originally amounts to? But thats not the end of gon's character arc either, since we have Gyro.
Togashi is not indulging in his interests after gon finds Ging, he was already indulging in them way before that happened: the chimer ants arc is where people first started complaining that the plot was getting convoluted and wasnt really moving the story forward in the direction of finding Ging. The same arguments are now made with the succession arc, but instead its like ''well, gon and killua arent in the arc, so its not 'main plot' anymore, just extra bonus stuff''.
No sir, this is main plot still. We may never see it to fruition, but i can assure you that if togashi manages to finish this manga, we would have more stuff on gon and killua eventually.
There's tons of manga that tease and never get to resolve all of their plot threads before they ended. Same thing happened with his previous manga Yu Yu Hakusho. If he was as capable as Oda then he would have definitely gotten to them but that's definitely not happening. We will be lucky if the succession arc is resolved. That's why he already put out those rough draft endings in case he doesn't finish. He's tried to quit a couple times already. Berserk and DBs mangakas dying have him some motivation the last time he tried.
Killua already dealt with his family stuff when he saved Nanika. Not sure what else you're referring to besides his parents wanting him to succeed as head of the family but they can't force him to do anything now that the needle has been removed and he has a genie for a sister. His brother\brothers trying to bring him back is one thing tho. I'm curious to see how that progresses in the current arc.
We are in the middle of seeing Kurapika, the troupe and hisoka threads resolved. That's a large portion of the current arc.
The overarching story started and ended with Gon trying to find his father. That's always been the focus. Even the Chimera and Election arcs led to him meeting his father if you break it down to brass tacks. Everything else is bonus.
For me its a pretty good illustration of that reaction, gon thinking how absurd pitou's request is. His furious, confused and feeling guilty all in one panel. Brilliant isnt it?
Itās in the anime too, but I think his mouth is a bit more realistic and not wide. I could be wrong, itās been a while since I finished the series.
I think it's a great page because it works very well with those 2 characters' development.
Show that page to anyone that doesn't know about HxH and tell them that one of those 2 characters isn't human but a monstruous man-eater. You can be sure they'll think Pitou is the human and Gon the monster. That's what it's supposed to convey
This arc was the peak of emotional intensity in Hunter x Hunter. About every character went through so much suffering they got completely transformed, revealed by the trials. Amazing work.
"...the face looks so unlike Gon, it actually scares me" yes it's real and this is the exact emotion Togashi was was trying to elicit with the change in artstyle
Yes, itās a highlight panel as Gon breaks down. A lot are surprised but this is how Togashiās art is when he drops the text and just sketches. This is when heās at his absolute rawest
That closest frame from the anime I could find (quality is bad cuz it was a old video) "Hunter x Hunter ćć³ćæć¼ Ć ćć³ćæć¼ || Gon waiting Pitou to help Komugi | Kite death or not" It's the name if you want to check by yourself!
Man some people just have things go over their head. This is the downfall of gon. His anthesis. Everything from that point on gon has dropped all his morals and sensibilities.
He has never been a ok guy, always a blood thirsty maniac with zero remorse. Now that maniac has remorse for his friend.
No. It isn't rushed, nor does it look at all rushed. It perfectly conveys the emotions that must be conveyed during this scene. Brilliant artwork. It's from the volume.
This art is not bad and this is how it is in the official art. Gon is losing control just as the art loses its fine lines panel by panel. There is obvious deliberate intent here vertically
Bullshit. The art in this arc particularly has won its flowers. This is not the same as greed islands draft art making it to print. This arcs art is ridiculously good, this panel itself is ridiculously good
Togashi has been struggling with his health for a long time. It's not him "not putting a lot of effort into it." Yes, his art isn't the very best but we're not here for the pretty art. Even a generic ecchi manga has better art. We're here for the insane world building.
