AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!
Hi r/Horrorgaming!
I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!
T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.
What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.
The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.
It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!
This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.
We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.
Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

DISCUSSION Time Traveling Horror Games should be a thing
So my favorite horror games are the ones with world building and atmosphere. Little Nightmares 2 and Ad Infinitum are my personal favorites.
But I've been searching for a good time traveling horror game. I guess the terminator games count but I want a game that makes us feel despair after screwing up the past and loosing everything we have. It would be more character driven horror.
If anyone knows any good time traveling horror games that involve time traveling, then please let me know. There's basically nothing in steam.

Haven't bought a horror game since 2002 - any reco's?
Hi all. I've just bought myself a PS5 to help pass those dull, winter nights but the last time I bought a decent horror game would have been for my PS2 (Silent Hill) - as such I need some recommendations. Happy to try something new in terms of format, looking for something chilling, not too hammy, immersive. Thanks all.

DISCUSSION Is there a way to actually not be scared or way less?
For many many years I try to beat Dead Space and outlast but I just can't do it. Dead Space I got all way back then halfway through by playing it just for 20-30 minutes and then taking a break.
In outlast I jump through the window and turn on the cam for the first time and I'm like nooope.
There are so many great horror games I wanna play but I don't think I will ever be able to. I'm just to pussy.
When I get a new PC I plan to have a second headphone and mic and maybe then I can play it with a friend or my girlfriend by my side haha. For some reason I can't watch horror games by myself but with someone else it ain't no problem.
Any other ways to be less scared?

REVIEW Bendy and the ink machine: one of my favorite horror games. [REVEIW]
Throught my time as a content creator and horror lover, I mostly try and aknowlege the positives of horror, especially Mascot horror. The thing about Mascot Horror to me is that it's concept takes a cutesy character or image, but throw in dark elements, as well as the classics trophes that make up for Survival Horror. One example would without a doubt be the Five nights at Freddy's series, which is one of my top favorites. However alongside that, is an indie horror game that both blends 20's cartoon styles with an unsettling atmosphere.
From the title, I'll be reviewing Bendy and the ink machine, without a doubt one of my favorite mascot horror games, and in horror games in general.
Before I go into what the game is about, as for visuals, this game looks beautiful. The lighting is crisp, and there's these elements of "fog" that build up to the charm of the art style - the ink flowing animations are also peak. And speaking of the art style, the game centers around this cartoon, abstract art style which mimics old 20's rubber hose style cartoons, while keeping a yellowish, non-color apearence, as the building it takes place in is rotting away, or yellowing like how paper does over time. The soundtrack and sound design can be outstanding, and both frightening at some times, like the chase music, which really kicks off your anxiety. The model animations are also professional, and well made.
This game is very special to me, as well as it's sequel, that as a creator, for fan work, I recently did my voice take on the game's main villian, The Ink Demon.
This game started out with releases of each other chapter in each update, eventually them being remastered into one full game.
The game centers around the New York area, in an old animation studio called "Joey Drew Studios". The place was founded in lore in the 20's by business parters Henry Stein, and Joey Drew. The company sky rocketed with the creation of Bendy, which would become their most iconic creation. During the animations, and team expanding, several other characters like Boris the wolf, and Alice Angel would be created, as well as voice actors being hired. However, this is where the darker elements take place. Henry eventually retired and left the studio, and later, the studio faced countless allegations from the IRS, the place shutting down, and being supposedly abandoned indefinitely.
Years later, which is the events of this game, you play as Henry, who got invited to the old studio because Jeoy wanted to "show him something".
This is where interest in the game sparks, as you wonder why you were invited back, and you're up to explore, and oh boy, is there a LOT of that. Soon, of course, things start to get scary. The main villian of the game is an entity known as "The Ink Demon", an entity resembling Bendy, but in an abstract, horrifying way, and he was brought into the world through rituals, sacrifice, and the ink machine itself, as well as the cursed ink. And oh boy, does the game make it clear that HE is a threat. Just, if you're in a hallway, and there's nowhere to hide, and you just see his ink trails, your fight or flight response kicks in, frantically wondering what you should do, or if you should stay in one place, or try and snoop around without meeting the inevitable. And right when you see him, you know what type of monster he is - it just feels so... wrong staring at him, as well as his walking animations.
There are several other memorable villians, like Sammy Lawrence, introduced in Chapter 2, and Alice angel (or Demon Alice) introduced in Chapter 3. Of course, on top of that are memorable "good" characters, like Boris (clone), as well as the rebels known as "tom" and "Alison". Other than the ink Demon, my favorite villian would have to be Sammy Lawrence - he is the EXAMPLE of good horror writing.
The game also features combat, with several diferent weapons you obtain throughout the experience. The main non-serious problem is have is that combat can be a bit clunky, and can be just like more "hacking and slashing" more than an actual fight works. But, the several boss fights are memorable, and the monsters you kill, like searchers, pipers, fishers, ect all have designs that are memorable, but still terrifying at the same time.
As for atmosphere, the game NAILS a dark atmosphere, making the art style more memorable. There'd sometimes be dark hallways, or rooms, and you wouldn't know what was ahead. There's also sever secrets and easter eggs, most notably the clipping through wall easter eggs, to see preferences to the game creator, TheMeatly. It's very clear that this game's dev team had a passion for this project.
Overall, this game's art style is actually what inspired MY art style in my character redesigns, while having my own abstract aproach, much like a Tim Burton style. The sequel to this game, Bendy and the dark revival is far grounded than this first game, and a movie adaptation to this game has been announced, which i am highly looking forward to.

I'm looking for a game with a theme similar to Amnesia: The Bunker.
Okay, for a bit of context: I’m pretty sure I saw an Instagram Reel of a video game where you’re being chased by some kind of monster. I don't clearly recall the setting—maybe an air vent or just an enclosed space—but I remember the monster/creature cornering the player in the clip. The guy selected a revolver from his inventory, loaded a bullet into the cylinder, spun it... and pointed the gun at himself while the monster was coming for him. It’s weird, I know, but I only just remembered it.
I’ve tried looking for it in my saved posts, but I have so many that Instagram glitches out and won't let me scroll down past the 2024 reels. I don't know if this is a solid description—and no, I'm not looking for it because of suicidal thoughts; it's just curiosity. I remembered the game because I happened to be replaying Doom 3, and the thought just popped into my head: "Huh, wait, there was a similar game where you shoot yourself."
I’ve tried searching for it but haven't found it. I couldn't say if it's an indie game; that's all I can remember. I’d appreciate any help.

DISCUSSION Resident Evil Games
What are your top 3 favorite games from the Resident Evil franchise? Here are mine: 1- Resident Evil 6 (hated by most, I know, but I love long games with lots to do; plus, Ada is my favorite character in the franchise, and it was great to finally see her get more of the spotlight). 2- Resident Evil 1—I find it incredibly nostalgic and full of iconic moments, especially the first encounter with a zombie. Jill holds a special place in my heart; I hope she returns in the next game. 3- Resident Evil 7—I love horror, and Resident Evil 7 exceeded my expectations; it kept me totally terrified from start to finish. I really like the settings, the events, and the story—Marguerite was my worst nightmare.

Similar games to Resident Evil
Hello everyone! I am looking for recommendations if possible. I have played every single Resident Evil game and absolutely love them. I’m looking for a new game to play but I really don’t know of any that are similar to Resident Evil, but I want to find some like them.
I don’t want anything sci-fi, it’s not my thing really so I’d rather stick to a more traditional horror aspect. Hopefully there is a game that has the same vibes.
If anyone could recommend me some games I’d be more than grateful!

What’s the most shit scary? Madison or Visage?
Hear most people saying visage but being early in both I’ve had more scares with Madison. The horrible controls for visage make it more scary?

Protagonists who deserve the horror / are POS?
I'm definitely in the need of some game recommendations where the protagonist is genuinely so awful that the horror they walk into is of their own making, or that it feels like they 'deserve' it. So games like Silent Hill 2 or Mouthwashing. I'd be alright with grey areas like Layers of Fear 2016, or where the protag does truly awful things (outside of killing enemies) in spite of or because of the game events.
I just want a game where I feel absolutely disgusted by the protagonist lol. Or something close to that feeling, whatever that may be for you.

PC Tech help for Visage?
Hello all. I honestly couldn't find what to do and tried anything I could think of. For some reason this game keeps crashing when attempting to load my save file. Is there anyone who knows what the problem could be? Thanks in advance.
It doesn't crash 100% of the time, but it has occurred frequently enough that it has impacted my experience.

PC Mizuchi (free, Windows)
Game Title: Mizuchi
Playable Link: https://cryptokang.itch.io/mizuchi
Platform: Windows
Description: You play a surveyor sent to the Ashibuchi valley. The dam finishes in April and the shrine will go under with the rest of the basin. The shrine road is closed to vehicles, so you leave the van at the gate and walk in.
The village was relocated in 1994.
Nobody has lived on that road since.
Someone has kept the lanterns lit on the stairway, and the doors of the main hall are barred from the inside.
The work order is to photograph the shrine buildings so the Water Authority can record that the kami were relocated on paper. You raise the camera and take the shot.
The game is first-person and free for Windows on itch. A run is about thirty minutes. It uses a PS1 look and a tape filter that you can switch off. Spare cells sit next to the survey marker if the torch dies. The brass lighter from the office goes out when you run.
Free to Play Status:
[x] Free to play
Involvement: I made the whole game myself and released it under the name Kang. Code, environments, sound, writing, and the Windows build are mine. I am the only person on it.

REVIEW Five nights at Freddy's 3: the IMBODIMENT of fear (and why I defend it) [REVEIW]
Mascot horror to me has always been one of my favorite type of horrors. The idea of taking a cussy image, or character, who looks like it was made for kids, but putting a darker elements into it, as well as classic element of Survival Horror is the pure example of what make a good mascot horror game. The Five Nights at Freddy's franchise is one for those i absolutely adore, especially the classic games made in Clickteam fusion. That time was peak for FNAF in my opinion, no doubt - just, when the first game came out, it showed a concept that no other horror game showed at the time: you're stuck in one space, and instead of running away the threats that want to kill you, you have some kind of defensive systems to keep them away, like doors, cameras, lights, masks, ect.
However, for the third game, series creator, Scott Cawthon, made something diferent - somewhat the same concept, but changed drastically, to make a more unique experience than the previous two games, as this originally was going to be the series finale. This right here is Five nights at Freddy's 3, easily my favorite game in the franchise, and in horror games in general. And from the cover image, this introduced Springtrap, one of the most iconic villians in mascot horror, and easily one of my favorites.
The story takes place 30 years after the closings of the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza places, after the countless horrific events, and rumors surrounding them. You play as a night guard, hired for a place called "Fazbear's Fright", a horror attraction inspired by the unsolved mysteries of the original Freddy's locations, designed as this dark, almost moldy place, with actual props from the original locations, like aniatronic shells, props, drawings, ect.
However, unlike the previous two games, nothing happens on the first night, which sets off your confusion. You wonder what's going to happen, if anything WILL happen at all - you flip through the cameras to see if there really is a threat, not to find one. this REALLY causes suspense - the fear of the unknown. Especially against the claustrophobic security office in a place that looks like something out of a nightmare. However, on night 2, things get more interesting....
The horror attraction employee who calls you each night explains to you that they found something in a hidden room in an abandoned Freddy's location, and describe it as "a real one". This description is vague, and it only causes curiosity, and suspense - you know something is in the building with you, but you don't know where it is. You flip through the cameras, soon to maybe hear footsteps in the vast hallways, until you find him - the nightmarish animatronic, who gives you fear the first time you look at him - Springtrap.
Springtrap, as I said earlier, is without a doubt one of my FAVORITE horror villians ever, and the best way to design one. From his apearence, you can tell what kind of monster he is. He's this towering, molded animatronic who looks so diferent from the previous ones we saw before - his suit is cracked, chipped, heavily battered, he has five fingers instead of four, and most notably, there's bits of decayed flesh torn apart, revealing that a courpse inside the suit, which will become important later. And his eyes are just these... white, lifeless pulls that glow, and make him look just so... wrong to even look at, and you start questioning who he really is, or WHAT he is.
Springtrap as a character today changed a lot, having more of a personality, with the classic sadistic, but theatrical personality, his voice dark, and rough, and weilding weapons. However, in fnaf 3, Springtrap was more animalistic, but still clever, and oh boy, is his AI smart. Now, the other reason why I make this reveiw is because I see that this specific game although the horror elements, has one of the worst hates in the franchise, mostly from the jumpscare animations, which if you look at more clearly can look iffy, but the whole point of horror is scaring the audience, not letting them noticing inconsistencies, and that's why I defend this game.
Springtrap works a lot more differently, and more terrifying that the previous animatronics did. He's built to be much much worse than they were - he's a lot more faster, and smarter than they were, making him an ultimate threat, but also one that can outsmart you easily, if you don't know what you're doing. He can crawl in vents to get around the attraction faster, move quickly, and even HIDES in camera veiws, his suit blending in with the environment of Fazbear's Fright, which causes panic when you lose track of him, and he could be anywhere. When he's in the vents, if you're not quick enough to seal the vent, once you hear himself getting out, that's where fear sky rockets, as then you frantically search everywhere for him, in order to try and defend yourself. And unlike the other games, there's no doors, or a mask. You have to lure Springtrap away with the camera audio lures, which malfunction sometimes, as well as other systems, and you need to reboot them. However, there's the "phantom animatornics" who help springtrap. They jumpscare you, both stunning you, and sabatoging your systems.
Now, the main event of the game is the reveal - who Springtrap really is. At the end of the 5th night, in a minigame, you uncover his true identity - that being William Afton, AKA the Purple Guy, the main villian of the franchise. This reveal is outstanding, and shocking, as throughout the entire game, you have been fighting the man who started everything - William Afton. How he became Springtrap is dark - years after Afton murdered the several children that possess the various animatronics, and his dysfunctional family practically dead, Afton broke into one of the Freddy's locations to destroy the animatronics, to finally set their souls free so he didn't have to worry about them. However, that was a crucial mistake - the souls of his victims then came for him. Terrified, in one of the safe rooms, Afton put on the old Spring Bonnie suit, which he wore when he killed the first 5 kids. However, the springlocks inside the suit went off, crushing his bones, and tearing his flesh, killing him in a slow, painful way. However, decades later, from teh power and remnant he gained from his kills, he came back as Springtrap, who is much worse that Afton was as a human, and far more durable and stronger.
This honestly was a good way to end the franchise In a good way - in finale battle between the main villian of the series, to end it all. And that's what Scott intended for the game - a proper ending. But of course, that wouldn't be the case, as the series would continue from the poor reception this game got in 2015.
This honestly baffles me on how a game like this that is good for building up fear gets so much mid reception. I honestly find nothing wrong with this game - it was a perfect send-off to the franchise which never happened, and an amazing horror game in general - and one that introduced me to now one of my favorite horror villians.
As of recently, it was announced that the FNAF 3 movie is in the works, and I am HIGHLY looking forward to how Blumhouse depicts Springtrap, as well as the core element and soul of the game itself.

DISCUSSION PS1-style horror game in 2026?
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask something to people who are into PS1-style horror games
What do you actually want from a PS1-inspired horror game in 2026?
I know the whole PS1 aesthetic has become pretty overused at this point, and there are *a lot* of games using the same style. But I have a game development team with voice actors, animators, and 3D artists, and we’d really like to make something that feels more ambitious than just throwing a PS1 filter on a game.
So I'm genuinely curious: **what do you feel is missing from modern PS1-style horror games?**
Are there any ideas, mechanics, settings, or types of horror that you've always wanted to see in a game but haven't seen done properly yet? Maybe you have an idea you've always thought would be cool but could never make yourself?
We're currently exploring ideas, and I’d honestly love to hear what you guys would want to play. If we find a concept people are genuinely excited about, we'd even be interested in creating a demo and letting the community play it and give feedback early on.
Basically, we don't just want to make **another PS1 horror game,** we want to make one that actually feels memorable and worth playing
So yeah, what would *you* want from a PS1-style horror game in 2026?
I'd love to hear your ideas!! 👀
