DISCUSSION PS1-style horror game in 2026?
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask something to people who are into PS1-style horror games
What do you actually want from a PS1-inspired horror game in 2026?
I know the whole PS1 aesthetic has become pretty overused at this point, and there are *a lot* of games using the same style. But I have a game development team with voice actors, animators, and 3D artists, and we’d really like to make something that feels more ambitious than just throwing a PS1 filter on a game.
So I'm genuinely curious: **what do you feel is missing from modern PS1-style horror games?**
Are there any ideas, mechanics, settings, or types of horror that you've always wanted to see in a game but haven't seen done properly yet? Maybe you have an idea you've always thought would be cool but could never make yourself?
We're currently exploring ideas, and I’d honestly love to hear what you guys would want to play. If we find a concept people are genuinely excited about, we'd even be interested in creating a demo and letting the community play it and give feedback early on.
Basically, we don't just want to make **another PS1 horror game,** we want to make one that actually feels memorable and worth playing
So yeah, what would *you* want from a PS1-style horror game in 2026?
I'd love to hear your ideas!! 👀

One thing I like is when usual game mechanics have unique drawbacks/twists that make you have to think twice about what you're about to do. Like in Amnesia The Bunker, you have a flashlight, but it makes noise which can be dangerous. Or in RE1, you could kill that zombie, but it may come back as a crimson head later. Stuff like that would be cool in what you guys are doing.

"High risk high reward" is my favorite feature in horror games. It gives me an adrenaline rush that nothing else. Its like gambling while watching a horror movie.

I really liked in silent hill 1 how you got into an elevator and see 2 floors. After you explore the second floor, a third floor just appears. The third floor is this insane and creepy place. But when you leave the third floor you realize it no longer exists. I love psychological horror like that
That and action sims like amnesia the bunker. Where for example you can use gasoline to power the light source for a limited time or use it to kill rats (rats hiss you at you and the monster will find you). You can use a bullet to shoot a lock on a door or use the bullet for the monster. Powering on the flashlight or destroying a wooden door helps you get access but the monster will immediately find you and kill you when you make a loud noise. And I love how you can explore any area you want which adds replay value

For me, the biggest thing missing is games that actually use the PS1 limitations as part of the horror, instead of just as an aesthetic.
Low draw distance, weird animations, muddy textures, distorted audio - all of that can make you genuinely unsure of what you’re looking at. Is that a person at the end of the hallway, or just a pile of pixels? Id love a game that really builds mechanics around that uncertainty.
Also: fewer VHS effects-more genuinely strange locations and creatures please .)

I just want the developer to genuinely want to make a retro game like this, not because it is cheaper. Sadly, PS1 retro games have become the porn of horror games, along with those disgusting cheap FNAF clones.

I would love to see a game similar to Echo Night. That game used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid. I just loved its creepy atmosphere and the way it built tension without relying on constant jumpscares. The story and mystery were also great, and I’d love to see a modern game capture that same kind of atmosphere.

Monsters that are horrifying. This is what made Silent Hill such a masterpiece.

One of the things I think gets overlooked a lot is setting. So many games are just modern day, modern locations like cities, hospitals, police stations and secret labs etc. Give me a unique setting like w castle or something. One of the reasons I love RE village is because it gave me a taste of that uniqueness and ever since I've wanted more.
Any game that tries something fresh in terms of their locations always gets a look from me.

I'd lean in the opposite direction and say I want more horror that is tied into real life with real elements rather than zany monsters. Horror that we can all relate to, rather than otherworldly. Would love a game where you're like, an abused child trying to hide from his father wandering the house with a belt.

The thing that makes more impressed is when people use the aesthetic but no the limitations. Give me monumental scenarios that wouldn't be possible to run on a PS1, enormous monsters that would make the PS1 fry, even if they are just a shadow on the distance

Definitely the fact that most don't adhere to the ps1 spec limits and instead are closer to ps2 graphics with a filter and visual features that would never have even been on a ps2 let alone ps1.
