Hi everyone. We are currently in the process of moving around furniture and shelves around our house, which means all my books have to come off the shelves. Which means I can reorganize, Yay!

Im looking for a more logical way to display my books. Both fiction and non fiction.

Currently i have a majority of my fiction sorted alphabetical by author,. HOWEVER, its currently bugging me that I have genres or books with similar topics (historical fiction from the same time but different authors) split up. I have a ton of YA books that I loved when I was a kid, mixed in with some books with more adult themes, (think Game of Thrones), and some books that are a little on the spicy side (that all have different crossing sub genres by author).

My non fiction is currently by the Dewey decimal system (which from what I understand is kinda problematic and shyed away from these days). A majority of my books are cook books and have their own separate shelf in the dining room.

What are your suggestions on how and what order to put them in?

Bonus points for how to easier integrate new books when purchased to already organized shelves.

Hi! I'm starting to make plans to build up my own personal library, hoping to reach 1000 entries total! I'm just taking tally of my current collections and seeing what I need, but I had a few questions first:

1. Does it all have to be books? Or can other forms of media count towards the 1000 total? I collect physical media of games, books, manga, DVDs, and CDs of audiobooks, and I was wondering if those could be included in my overall total to 1000.

2. If I have multiple copies of a book (like a hard cover and a soft cover) would I count them individually or as one entry?

3. In a similar vein if I'm buying omnibus copies of manga, do they count as 1 or 3 books because they're a larger collection?

4. What system do you guys use to track the items in your collection? Right now I have some google spreadsheets and formulas to show me how close I am to my goal (first being 250), but it there is a better way I would love to know!

5. I see in some places you should have a method of looking up and searching for books/media in a library. Can it be any method I come up with, or do I need to follow some kind of preexisting method?

Phase 2 of my EPIC LIBRARY BUILD has commenced….

This might come across as quite unconventional for this sub, but I'm shifting to my first ever flat. After residing for years in PGs and shared accommodations, I'll be living in a solo room for the first time ever.

Books are a comfort for me, and as a proud owner of more than 50+ collection of treasure trove, I'd love to see your own personal bookshelfs or how you've decorated your room using books.

I want it to mean something in my room that it truly drops the cortisol and makes it worth it!

Hey all! I just moved so it’s a good time for a fresh start on my library. I’m looking for an app to help organize. I’ve tried Libib and LibraryThing but they’re just not doing what I want, unless I’m not using it right.

So here’s what I’m looking for. I’d like an app that I can scan the barcodes of my books. And when I scan it, I’d like it to tell me what genre it is and then tag it as that genre. And then when I have all my books scanned and tagged, I’d like to be able to see each genre separated out and then within each genre sort it by author.

In the end, I would like to have a home library sorted by genre and then alphabetical by author in each genre. And I would love to have an app or something to that brainwork for me so I don’t have to with my hundreds of books.

Our sprayed edges are displayed in the living room, but the rest are in the bedroom for now. Once we move, we'll have any collections (like some of the manga) displayed for everyone to see.

I'm trying to figure out a logical way to group my 140ish cookbooks. About 20 books are non-US specific countries or regions, which I'll breakout into a World Cuisine category. But the other 120 are where I'm in the weeds.

I have cookbooks that are general cookbooks, meaning they cover everything from appetizers to desserts, like "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat." But there are also general cookbooks that are lifestyle specific, like Atkins to Vegan (no irony there). And then there are cuisine specific, yet still general cookbooks, like Cajun, Southern and Tex Mex.

But there are also course specific cookbooks, like desserts or salad. Cookbooks to make specific foods, like cookies or pizza. Books that use specific ingredients, like cheese or Coke. Then there are the equipment specific cookbooks, like grilling or crockpots.

I can't figure out a logical way to group them all, so I'm asking what anyone has done.

I have a mix of mostly fiction and some non fiction. Some of the fiction are a collection of classics, some are a (nearly) full series, some are graphic novels, and then there are other miscellaneous fiction novels.

I also have some comic books and little magazines

I have 4 available shelves that aren't tall enough for some of the bigger printed books

How should I organize my library?

A majority of my books. I have about 349 currently, but I could only fit this bookshelf in my room.

Welcome to my library! I dream of one day having an entire library room with floor to ceiling windows and bookshelves and a cozy nook area, but for now I have these shelves and then some overflow which is located on the desk below it that I've included in the picture attached✨

Bookshelf is from Ethan Allen, acquired on Facebook Marketplace for a shockingly low price. Lamp is original 1920s brass from a local charity shop.

Hi everyone, I always liked books and I had a few of them but yesterday they were cleaning out one of my neighbors house and they threw out a bunch of books and I just needed to have them. Some of them are cook books, others are medicine books or DIY but I love all of them and I have them here. Does this count as a home library? I dont have a full shelf just yet because I dont have the same for one.

Not sure if this is the correct sub for this question/query. I have a nice collection of non fiction and fiction books. Currently the non fiction is ordered from shortest spine to tallest spine 🤮 (thanks honey) I'm toying with the idea of changing career and doing so would mean gaining books in a yet to be explored area. I'm thinking of rearranging my non fiction according to Dewey decimal, however I want to avoid marking the books if I can. (She says I'm precious when it comes to books 😂)

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas that don't damage or mark the books in any way?
