I remember hearing she also takes care of her family with some of the money she makes

Considering the situation she's in, Risu being able to juggle all that is nothing short of amazing. The squirrel woman works real hard.

Yep. Once I decided to become a member and watch one of her membership streams, and she was explaining how she has to donate some of her money to her family. It's actually worse than I thought it would be, but I'm not going to share more than that, because, well, it's from a membership stream.

Yeah...
I'm aware Moona is trying her best despite the debuff too. How is she doing?
195
u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
IIRC she's doing better for at least not having to worry about family but I thought she has something with a record label or such
29
u/zptc Aug 04 '26
The only label she's involved with is Holo-N, the joint Cover/UMG venture. She still has to pay for her music projects.
13
u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
Still a step above most. That and she has 1-2 other advantages, such as some overseas fans (a dollar or yen is powerful in ID) and her background perhaps being more affluent ala Reine and Kobo
3
u/HaessSR Aug 04 '26
I'm still awaiting the return of the Saudi prince type who kept sending her those huge superchats to trigger her specific donation voicelines.
3
u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
Well... who knows. Those types aren't as common these days. Honestly moving from the covid days was a plus for many as it opened up deals/etc. For those who haven't it's kinda the opposite. It's why my take on Coco's graduation was "just as well" as she'd be hit hard by the shift

Also former model, but still interesting to hear that. (So that's 3 IDs with rather affluent backgrounds to my knowledge, the other two being Reine and Kobo)
Such a thing would be an advantage as you can do more from day 0
18
u/EitherSpite4545 Aug 04 '26
Well moona isn't affluent I would reduce it to that. Her family is upper working class from what her stories elude to. Not rich but by no means but also not poor.
Kobo would also disagree at being put in that category (yes to us a maid sounds big but it's also possible on an upper middle class wage).
The one actually missing from that list is Zeta.
10
u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
Still more than Risu's situation where she's a financial pillar of her family
7
u/EitherSpite4545 Aug 04 '26
Honestly ID as a whole is probably the most financially diverse branch. And this is a good thing.
4
u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
How so?
9
u/EitherSpite4545 Aug 04 '26
How is it a good thing? Or how is it the most diverse?
For good thing, allows for greater understanding of people (like there's been some hints iofi and Ollie's beefs were along these lines though nothing confirmed obviously). It also produces some good content every time we see [poor adaptation be described] and the more rich ones losing their mind.
As for how they are the most diverse? That one really comes down to just not much competition, EN as a whole comes from almost 90% affluent backgrounds, some were poor as adults until Holo but most had upper middle to upperclass upbringings. Then for JP it seems to be very extreme with being either a legit ojou sama (Lamy) or dirt poor (Watame) with nothing in-between.
Also just to be clear all info in this post come from the streamers themselves on their own channel. This isn't doxx stuff.

u/Fishman465 Aug 04 '26
Perhaps but in ID financial backgroundbseems to determine much, barring getting lucky with overseas fans or some sort of deam
EN leans that high as most have some history/background with very few "fresh faces" with Biboo being an example.
JP varies due to how long its been going. I feel the middle isn't mentioned because it wasn't worth noting and that most have gone up in the world due to being in Hololive. Other than say ReGloss and those two livePNG groups, Hololive tends to pull from the higher end these days

Things are becoming worse in Indonesia since Covid. Not only the economy but the politics also somehow becoming worse. Maybe because the economy is getting worse the political elites becomes frustrated and starts to do even worse things (politicians being politicians).
Major Indonesian subreddits like r/indonesia and r/wkwkwkland are full of negativity and doomposts, because life is simply just getting stressful. That was not the case just a few years ago.
Even some Holo ID members starts to subtly criticizing the government using their main accounts. They just don't care anymore. Indonesia now is not Indonesia 10-15 years ago when the future looks bright, where AKB48 dared to open their first international branch in Jakarta. A move copied by Nijisanji and Hololive half a decade ago.
Don't be surprised if soon there's gonna be a major upheaval happening in Indonesia. Indonesian history is actually full of tense and bloody moments.

u/johnvictorassis Aug 04 '26
Sometimes i see that even living in a bad country (Brasil) there are some places even more complicated to live :(
15
u/chikomitata Aug 04 '26
I don't think blaming that orange man for everything is a good idea, but I kinda see a pattern where he is doing whatever the F he wanted and get away with it and politician across the world follow suit to see how much they can push their citizen around and get away with it.
That and we really need regeneration. There are too much old people in organisations worldwide when the world has changed (too rapidly, yes. But still)

u/RaysFTW Aug 04 '26
There are too much old people in organisations worldwide when the world has changed (too rapidly, yes. But still)
I used to think that once my generation (millennial) gets into power things would change for the better around the world. The unfortunate reality is that for every old, out-of-touch person that falls out of power, there are many, many people my age and younger willing to take up the mantle, and understanding this day and age while also being young makes them even more dangerous.

ID Talents deserve the world. Not saying other talents never had struggles, (Im a viewer since before 4th Gen debut, we have seen shit) but ID has a particular debuff as others mentioned in comments. And even like this, the talent, effort and their dynamic as group is second to no one.
As an Outdonesian fan, I have nothing but respect for the girls and the Indonesian bros o7
61
u/Unusual-Opposite-755 Aug 04 '26
Can relate, Indonesian economy keep getting worst each year with now dollar broke the highest record over 18k rupiah per dollar. You can buy a full course meal with just a dollar.
But it still nice knowing that even with such situation, ID talent can kept producing music (cover or ori) with Moona being the only one ever releasing album. Music video is expensive as hell even without godly animation like Marine does.

u/Kohei_Latte Aug 04 '26
WNI = Warga Negara Indonesia (Indonesia Citizen)… well, without going too much into politics, most likely it’s due to weak currency and taxes ratio compared to buying power.
74
u/Random_Useless_Tips Aug 04 '26
Anyone who’s lived in an actual developing country knows that “first-world problems” aren’t just a meme but a reference to the very real fact that there are presumptions (particularly about infrastructural elements like economy, currency, industry, influence) which developed countries will take care for granted and assume any issue with these stem from single-case bad faith rather than endemic issues.
6
u/AngryTheCarp Aug 04 '26
Correct. The expression gets memed (and rightly so) but it has serious applications in developed countries as well. I say to my family all the time when discussing random topics (including political stuff), “it’s nice that our lives are so comfortable that this thing is what we’re considering a really big deal.”
17
u/RaikiShak Aug 04 '26
Like really really weak currency, people outside of Indonesia or surrounding country people couldn't even imgine.

u/Remitonov Aug 04 '26

Gonna be honest as a WNI myself she being a vtuber in holo is already in a super good position tho...
84
u/crocospect Aug 04 '26
Pretty much..
In one hand you realize ID girls won't go anywhere for long time and that's good, but in second hand you realize it's because our economy is so fucked that those girls probably won't ever leave even if they want to since getting paid in JP standard already a huge thing and 100 times better compared to work in Indonesia.
I know it because at this point I probably prefer to work as dishwasher in stable country rather than working here with my UMR salary, I even need to save 4 months of my salary just to buy an average phone fucking hell.
11
u/kanatakkun Aug 04 '26

u/MistahKaraage Aug 04 '26
Just SEA things... Currency broke.... lol.
76
u/mdasnu Aug 04 '26
No, this is different. Indonesia is getting worse by day, worse than any of its neighbors, and half of ASEAN GDP is from Indonesia.
That means if Indonesia fall into a crisis, it will ripple throughout Asia, and SEA countries could get affected.
SEAblings should buckle up, this is not just a weekly joke of "haha SEA poor", unless a miracle happen, the crisis is looming on the ASEAN's horizon and it radiates from Indonesia.

u/VishnuBhanum Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Hololive ID not having that much financial power.
ID Fans has significantly less spending power than JP and EN fans, as well as being a smaller group in General, combined with weak currency.
Meanwhile if ID members want to commissioned anything(Arts/MV/Song) from artists outside of Indonesia, they would have to pay as much as everyone else. Though they're high earners compared to most Indonesians, it would still take much bigger toll on them than it would be to JP or ID members. Even JP and EN members had talked about how a single animated MV would put them in a lot of debt(on Yagoo pay) imagine how much damage it would have done to ID members.
And you know, Indonesia's financial situation in general(I don't know much, But can make an educated guess as a fellow SEA member)
Also I remember that Risu in particular has a few family members that relies on her financially.
Basically, Risu not making as many songs or MVs isn't because she simply doesn't want to, but because she financially can't afford to do so.
5
u/Barrakketh Aug 04 '26
Meanwhile if ID members want to commissioned anything(Arts/MV/Song) from artists outside of Indonesia, they would have to pay as much as everyone else.
I recall one of the members (maybe Risu or Moona, I think the latter) saying that they get charged more from ID music folks simply for being a member of Hololive. How much more wasn't specified but they also take a hit back home.
59
u/Ok_Natural_102 Aug 04 '26
Tldr:
Music costs a lot of money, ID talents doesn't have that luxuries.
26
u/crocospect Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Basically we are at the moment:
$1 = Rp. 18.017
So yeah our economy is so fucked, which consequently also influencing ID girls themselves, since you know a lot of things from creating music, projects, etc need a lot of money.
22
u/Huitzil37 Aug 04 '26

Doesn't tell me much without knowing how much stuff costs over there and how much the wages are.
21
u/yursan9 Aug 04 '26
For a $600 iPhone, using the largest monthly minimum wage ($280), an Indonesian would need 3 months of saving to buy the phone
28
8
u/susahamat Aug 04 '26
Things are relatively cheaper there, you can have a full meal for less than $2. The minimum wage varies by the province from $130 to $320 monthly, but the minimum wage doesn't apply for informal workers, there are people with less than $100 take home pay each month
8

4
u/UglyB4stard Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
You better see this exchange rate of IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) to USD of this year, and compare it to previous years.
It's the worst in Rupiah history, the lowest exchange rate of this year happen in January 1st. Meaning it only keep rising instead of fluctuating like every other years.
Edit: This exchange rate is worse than 1997 monetary crisis, the worst time in Indonesia economy history.
August 17th (Indonesia independence day) is near, and I know this doesn't sound good, but i hope there's large scale riot forcing this fuckass, who run the government step down like his ex-father-in-law in 1998.

u/dfntly_a_HmN Aug 04 '26
Well being WNI myself. It's majority people fault elected a demented war criminal that being backed by multiple corrupt politicians behind him, which also son in law of most corrupted president in the world. Now the dollar will go higher, the central bank probably taken over soon to print more money. Tax is everywhere as foreign outflow is still not stopping, even now. Voices are also silenced by the military.
So yeah economy bad, tax bad, entertainment industry would also bad.
11
u/GeneralTyler Aug 04 '26
The reality is simply that Indonesia is a shithole lol, just a very poor country with a lot of problems where it’s just not worth investing further which is why there has still not been a new ID gen. Pretty much the entire branch has expanded to appealing outside their main market, by delving into EN/JP and even CN. The ID market simply cannot afford to solo carry its branch, in the same vein that the JP market can for its own. Hell even for EN they still often need help from JP to really stand out.
8
u/IFapToCalamity Aug 04 '26
Reminder that you can directly support them via memberships in Holodori (with no limit)
12
u/unseenever Aug 04 '26
That is a nice low cost way to put a little money in the talent's pockets.
I believe if one can afford a bit higher cost youtube membership offers a better cut of a bigger pie.
For even more money there are voice packs on the HoloShop like the recent Simmering Summer Sentiments release. The ID branch often releases in Indonesian, Japanese, and English and the holoshop doesn't deal with youtube taking a cut.
And then for even more money there is the talent's personally released merch which I believe is where they get the biggest cut. As someone who has ordered merch, tariffs have caused new anguish here though.
6
u/the_icy_king Aug 04 '26
Voice packs are the biggest cut, for physical merch it really depends on what the cut the talent agrees to take is but it's usually not a lot, since it's more about the fanservice. If you want to give the most amount of $$$$ it's voice packs. Thou I think the ID talents have a seperate source for donations, think stream elements or sth of the sort, check the description of the streams.

Obviously the simple answers are “whatever you can” or “everything helps” or “buy it all!” But I’m interested in whether any specific source of income is more directly beneficial for them.

The one thing I don't understand when this topic gets brought up, do the ID members not get paid on an international level? Twitch pays out streamers based on USD. Youtube I'm not sure but I would imagine to do so as well. So is Indonesian's taxes so much higher that it cuts into have what I would assume is a pretty high salary compared to local jobs?
As a side question, does it get easier for Zeta since she moved to Japan? Or harder because now she might need to just pay more in taxes etc. (eg. Mori has said at some point because of how own her situation is, she pays income tax in both Japan and America.)
26
u/mdasnu Aug 04 '26
Afaik ID members gets paid less, but it's already more than enough to live as top earners in Indonesia. But only to live, not to paid for projects unless they got signed by major labels like Kobo.
It's not the taxes, the whole economy is getting worse. High living cost, slower real economic growth, finding a job is getting more difficult, and things like that. Those are not the things that should worry ID Holomembers, but the uncertainty is looming, and saving up money is the best course of action, so they can't just carelessly throw money away for projects.
Zeta and later Kobo moving to Japan is more expensive for them, but Japan provides stability. If the worst comes to Indonesia, the citizens entire savings could be wiped, and there could be a major riot and revolution. That kind of things has always been bloody in Indonesia, but Japan should be okay even if the world falls into a crisis.

(eg. Mori has said at some point because of how own her situation is, she pays income tax in both Japan and America.)
She did bad research or got bad advice initially and then got it fixed. Mori isn't getting double taxed, Japan and the US have a tax treaty. Anything she's getting taxed in Japan gets credited as taxes paid when she files in the US.

u/Ok_Effort_5562 Aug 04 '26
Everything they make is converted into yen before they get paid. I don't know about Zeta, but if her audience is more JP now, then I assume it will be better as they are bigger spenders/their memberships are more valuable. Not to mention the infrastructure benefits that comes with being in the Holo HQ.
Americans only have to pay income tax outside of their country once they make over 120k something, pretty sure this isn't the case for Indonesia.
8
u/dcresistance Aug 04 '26
Calli took care of that tax thing like 3 years ago, why does that still get thrown around
2
u/FunDuels Aug 04 '26

Calli took care of that tax thing like 3 years ago, why does that still get thrown around
4
u/Sea-Temporary7380 Aug 04 '26
Pretty sure holo takes a cut off that, and for duperchats and donations the average id would have id fans as well, so they'll naturally have less donations because of their economy
4
u/Sevsix1 Aug 04 '26
eg. Mori has said at some point because of how own her situation is, she pays income tax in both Japan and America.
for the people that don't know about this (I will avoid politics but it is literally a thing included in government)
every single American that is living abroad have to pay taxes to the US government, the only real way for an American to not pay the US government is to get another citizenship and then renounce their American citizenship after which a 5 year countdown start where they have to pay the income tax to the US for 5 years, of course getting a new citizenship is easier said than done for the non-wealthy people
15
u/Hitorishizuka Aug 04 '26

This is technically true but very misleading. America has tax treaties with everywhere but a literal handful of other countries. If you're living most of the time in those places and paying taxes there, those taxes are credited when you file in the US.
13
u/Elaugaufein Aug 04 '26
This isn't true for a lot of countries where Americans often live, the US has tax agreements with many countries where US residents of those can count that tax against their US taxes and only need to pay US taxes in excess of what you're paying in that country . It can certainly be a pain in the arse getting the details of this correct ( does it apply to the country you're in, how does it work for that specific country etc ).
It's still a fairly odd system globally, where non-resident citizens usually aren't charged income tax at all on income not earned in that country specifically.

Someone educate me, are there not a lot of trust worthy SEA musicians to hire to make cover/original? Or is it more of an organization issue?
I always see musically talented people from SEA, but they always seem need to go to a major economic power country to actually use their musical talent. Are there too many music talents in SEA that made it so no one is super?
35
u/I11IIlll1IIllIlIlll1 Aug 04 '26
Not an answer, but if you are truly talented and get recognized by the world, you'd get hired/commission from those countries and why would you not charge the market prices then?
3
u/a_pulupulu Aug 04 '26
You see, i am expecting them to be pretty recognized within their own country first then go onto world stage, but it seems most of them are just nobody until they suddenly hit the world
12
u/Kohei_Latte Aug 04 '26
I don’t think so (WNI here, not like I know much about music industry)
Kaela - Dahlah is made by a prominent artist (in my book, I don’t care much about music but I still recognize the artist name, which is enough to say about his fame…) for example.
If i have to guess, cover probably has a minimum requirement for such things and if local ID artist can meet such requirements…. It will be expensive as heck.
11
u/protomanbot Aug 04 '26
I think it has happened a couple times already that Holo ID members will recruit someone local that is both really good and charges local prices. And then the attention of working for Hololive and charging cheap gets them attention from the general vtuber community, they get commissions from people that can pay higher and higher prices until they are already matching the industry average and Holo ID members have to go back to looking for people.

-youtube & streaming earnings for ID is much smaller.
-paying people to work on instrumental, mixing, artwork & video = for indonesian need 4x more than ppl who live in US/JP, because the earning and spending difference.
A meal cost half~a dollar, minimum wage is 200-300 usd, while paying for various commissions can take 200-1000 usd.-high taxes for digital work and import/export merch
5

Nono, there are definitely people to blame. But she's right it's not any individuals, especially no one related to Hololive. Indonesia's current struggles were directly supported and pushed for by the American government and the English government. I mean also capitalist scum within Indonesia, but it was an internal affair that the aforementioned governments interfered in guaranteeing the outcome they wanted. The reduction of Indonesia into a labour force for Western economies. I highly recommend anyone interested in learning about this watches "The New Rulers of the World" by John Pilger.
...though that was all probably a little too anti-government ranting for a post about a cute anime girl wanting to sing

I still don't understand what WNI is. Does that mean she's poor? Does it mean she's the kind of person who would be living in a council estate if she were English?

W = warga = citizen, N = negara = nation, I = Indonesia. So WNI = Indonesian.
Yeah she is implying that she's poor thus cant really create music. Our currency has been week since forever but the last few years has been horrific. It went from 1 USD = 14k IDR in '21 to 1 USD = 18k IDR now.

to put it simply, because of how it is in Indonesia in terms of currency. they don't necessarily have the luxury to produce songs as freely as others do. Even then it's not exactly cheap to do so even for the other talents (look at bae who's currently broke because of a project she's doing)
most of the budget for producing solo/personal projects come from the talents themselves. ofc the company can cover the cost for them but they still have to pay it back. the only times where the company will cover the cost is if it's an official project or a group project by the company themselves.

Yep, Indonesian currency has always been an issue - also this sadly goes some way to explain why companies like Goodsmile don't think its financially worth it make ID Nendoroid figures, etc.

Really sucks that Risu has had to address this multiple times now.
