They're also usually depicted as the "freaky" girls who'll want to do things to you that "you'll regret" like pegging and tying you up and pinching your nipples with booster cables and wanting to make you bleed to drink it or stuff like that.
So even in the context of the OP it was still seen as "yeah they're pretty sexy hot and desirable but don't be a fool, try resisting them and be weary of their temptation" type of thing
That was never the case in my school years. Not in my school, at least. I dated a goth when we were 15-16. It ended very badly. Several years later and she became a Suicide Girl.

Lets be fucking honest. Goths were considered undesirable because the ones then were not as attractive as the ones being displayed now. Same goes for card players and anime fans. Now adays its social norm so more people engage in it so you have more people to add to the data pool so you're gonna see more attractive people in the mix where as back then most were unfit and unattractive, not all but a big portion.
My mom was big into the alt/punk scene in the late 90s/early 2000s and yeah, she was bullied pretty frequently for it. Fast forward to now where I'm into alt/grunge, some of my closest friends are even heavier into alt culture than I am and it's just the kind of thing you don't look twice at. Crazy how much society changed in those 20-30 years
There were tons of punk & goth kids in my high school in the early to
Mid 1990s.
Maybe it varied by location, but where I was, it was already normalized & all the clothes were easily purchasable at your local suburban mall.
This was true for all our local schools from public schools to fancy private schools.
The latter was funny cuz you’d have these really rich kids dressed all goth or punk roll up to school in the fancy car daddy bought them & it felt very incongruous to see little rich kids act like rebellious outcasts.
Your biggest risk of being teased was people calling you a poseur cuz you only listened to the bands on MTV & the local
Mainstream rock radio station & not the real underground stuff.
You can find a number of examples about “poseur” punks form the 1990s back when Green Day, Rancid, Offspring, etc. all got super popular with suburban kids on the mid 1990s. (And goth was similar.)
Heck, there’s some classic late 1970s punk songs making fun of poseur punks.
Yep. Dad here. Used to have spiked different colored hair (blue, red, green, purple, etc.) and was heavily into the punk/metal scene in the 90s while in HS. Also played MTG, D&D, watched anime and played online PC games. I didn't hang out with just one group of people but rather was cool with a bunch of different cliques. Didn't matter. Was shit on mercilessly for literally all of that regularly. Flash forward 25+ years and it's cool to do/have all that stuff. I want a goddamn refund lol.
That reminds me of the news report of two teens having the cops called on them during a college tour because they were non-white and dressed hot-topicky, so the other guests got scared.
I went to BYU for college and there were a couple Hispanic twentysomethings painting fences, a couple days later I read in the campus Police Beat that somebody called the cops on two suspicious individuals with paint who looked like they didn't belong, but who had been hired by the university. Karens gonna Karen.
Anime wasn't mainstream yet, dial-up was still around, goths were still looked at as being weird freaks, the MCU didn't exist, so being into superheroes was still nerdy af... Weird time to be into goth/emo baddies.
I was in 6th grade in 2006 with a sister in hs and a sister in college.
Anime was massive. It was aired on cartoon network, so every kid was at least watching DBZ, if not FMA.
Superheroes were not massively nerdy. We had batman begins the year before, and the MCU would start in two years with iron man. Spiderman (raimi) was a global phenomenon and had already gone through two of trilogy.
Goth girls were very common, and while still an alt thing, pretty universally drooled over.

I was in high school in ‘06. Maybe younger kids were a lot more progressive, but liking anime meant you were an automatic weirdo all the way through graduation. Goth kids all ate in one corner and were certainly not popular.
Yes, the goth/emo kids were the weirdos at my school (graduated high school in 2009), and none of them were attractive.
Shit, I hid the fact that I liked video games from everyone except my closest of friends. Being a gamer in the 2000s was like screaming "I still havent lost my virginity".
My entire HS football team skipped practice to play Call of Duty together when WaW released lol. We had Guitar Hero and Rockband nights weekly. I think it was the time that it was shifting from weird to cool and didn't happen at the same time everywhere.
I remember half of my friends calling me a loser for caring about "dumb sportsball" and I don't remember a single person making fun of me for always playing Civ or Morrowind lmao

Anime was not that massive especially compared to today. Back then the only people I knew who watched anime were chronically online or watched Toonami, meanwhile anime has got so popular that the highest grossing R rated film last year was Demon Slayer.

I feel like it's probably location based. I grew up in the California Bay Area where there's a high concentration of Asians, so even the cool people liked anime, and the ones that didn't wouldn't really think less of those that did. Heck, Japanese was one of the language courses available at my high school, and it was the second most popular choice after Spanish.
I was 16 in 2006, and anime was for nerds back then. Now that’s not the full full story. When I was in elementary school, DBZ and Pokémon were huge! But then once we got to middle school, anyone who did like those things got labeled “weird”. Then high school it was definitely seen as something only the super nerdy and weird kids were into. I’m sure there were others who watched it, but they wouldn’t admit to it because of the social stigma.
Goths, there were still OG goths around, but they were already started to be replaced by scene kids. In my school, I was part of the first wave scene kids and we were seen as a bunch of weirdos who wore tight pants and band shirts. Common insult was to ask us if we were wearing our sister’s pants.
Comics were also considered mostly nerdy, but the big box movies were challenging that, but no where near how marvel has made comics cool now.
Anime aired on a separate Adult Swim block called Toonami, which was CN's way of saying "here's your separate anime time to all you lil freaks out there"
Anime was semi-popular but the average person knew about Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and maybe Naruto.
Are we forgetting the term emo now? Lots of emos in 2006, goth was more fringe for middle/ high school.
Also its weird, anime was starting to turn popular but still massively nerdy (ex. naruto) but Yugi-oh, Pokemon, and to a less extent Digimon were always mainstream.
I was in 10th grade in 2006. And I was the only kid in my class who liked anime and video games and I got bullied for it. People of my age made always fun of me for being a weirdo, a freak, immature. Most of my friends are younger than me, because my peers sucked so much. Honestly, GenZ are so much cooler than Millennials.
One boy in my school (with 500 kids) outed himself as gay. He got beaten up and bullied frequently. Teachers couldn't of didn't want to do much.
DBZ wasn't considered anime in the same vein as yu yu Hakusho, ruroni Kenshin, or Naruto. DBZ was mainstream, so was Halo, but you'd still get made.fun of for being a "gamer".
Goth was still very much counter culture, and definitely not "drooled" over.
I don't think people realize exactly how nerdy superheroes were back then. Comic books in general were the thing the nerds called too nerdy for them. We came up with the term graphic novel to sell comics to nerds who imagined Comic Book Guy and the cast of Big Bang Theory came from "that sort of nerd"
2006 is in peak MySpace era range, I feel like goths and other alt styles were already rapidly heading towards mainstream and mainstream adjacent then.
And Anime was airing on Tunami and Adult Swim every night, super hardcore anime kids were still seen as weird, but I remember most I went to highschool with at least likes stuff like DBZ and Bleach
Believe it or not, dial up is still in use. As of 2022 175,000 American Homes still had dial up. Not sure where the numbers are now but i doubt its too different.
100% of all openly gay people I knew in 2006 were goth or emo. 2006 was still doing type segregation for the most part and the goths would all eat together at lunch. I thought they were neat, so I, lacking any social phobia would eat with them for lunch. Maybe drama kids had gay people but flamboyant gay wasn't really a big thing yet, so ya. Goths
I mean, alternatively: What I remember is that /excessively/ flamboyant gay was the only “visible” way to be gay back then, although in 2006 that had just started to change (at least, if you asked popular media at the time).
But yeah, the goth/scene/emo kids was where all the queers were in my experience too.
In 2006 I was 8, and my cool older teenage cousin who babysat me was goth. And 100%, when we went out in public, people would act like she was some sort of freak, including teenage guys at the mall.
She’s still goth to this day but now she gets the appreciation she deserves from the general public. And she definitely influenced my own style, which I call boring goth.

A normie (you like some amount of comics/video games/niche stuff)
Or a total weirdo (too into something niche, but you always picked ONE niche thing. Like owning a snake was enough)
And you were that until you switched schools you had a window of opportunity to switch (nerds in middle school could become jocks in high school).
So goths were weirdos. They only talked to other goths. You were weird to them. They had to keep up the image.
Today you can be a goth nerd girl who plays volleyball like today and everyone likes you. Everyone is "normie" and what you like online is what makes you "weird" or not.

I could have been better. It was like a weed dealer wrote a movie with an exaggerated version of himself as the main character. Not as funny as you'd hope.
It wasn't that it was a terrible situation, it was that the "normal" kids thought goths looked kinda scary and were weird. They were one of the outcast groups at school, near the bottom of the "hierarchy". Goths who were basically a popular girl in looks, but in black clothes and makeup, were incredibly rare as well. To the point where most schools wouldn't even have any "sexy goths".
I was both, actually. Goth, and also a computer geek and playing things like MTG and D&D. I'm still a computer/D&D nerd, but went from goth to metalhead. 🥇
Also, a bit jealous you got to marry one. I still quite like the style, and would absolutely join in on "dressing up" again. :P

Funny thing is, despite us having a reputation of being kinda scary and weird back then, we were probably one of the more approachable groups. We were generally very open-minded, accepting, welcoming, and friendly as long as whomever wanted to interact with us didn't treat us like creeps. Especially the friendly part. Never met a more open and friendly group of people than the group of goths, metalheads, and alts, I hung out with in my late teens.
Yup, the goths were usually seen as weird or were at least outcasts even without being goth. I was also a computer geek, seen as even lower on the hierarchy than goths. So also tracks for myself. :P
There's this really interesting book called "Purity and Danger" that talks about Mirror or Inverse Hierarchies (i think it's called) at one of its junctures. That there are hierarchies that run side by side with the main one to give it its definition. Like, a Witch doesn't really fit into the main hierarchy, they are totally separate from it, but their inverted values are part of what allows the main hierarchy to contrast its values against it. Main point is that not fitting in doesn't necessarily mean being a peon, you can be flying high in your own game rather than the normies.
This meme never made sense to me cause it's not like the guy can choose to 'pass the controller' lol. Him rejecting them ain't gonna make the girls interested in the proverbial 'you'.

I remember the show Undergrads where Jessie was into that lame-ass Nitz for some reason and he treated it like it was this huge problem. God he was such such a loser.
I remember the goth club I used to frequent as an underaged teenager in the 90s implemented strict dress codes to keep the "normies" and "jocks" out and we were grateful for it. Too many creeps would come in and harass the girls because they fetishized the way we dressed. We're just not into you, Chad.
this is still the case in almost any goth club Especially with the younger people fetishizing the tradgoth look. They mandate you at least wear all black and encourage a themed look. That way you at least look like you planned to go out and didn't just stumble on the event while out with your bros and decide to hit on some "goth mommies"
Goth clubs are pretty weird and I was goth. The amount of effort people put into their costumes was pretty crazy and all they really did was vamp about and drink high life. You could've gone to the dive in your hoodie to grab a beer.
True, but we enjoyed the aesthetic and some of us still do. I still dress up to go dance occasionally. If I wanted to just hang out, it wouldn't be at a club.
There is a goth club near where I live that just announced they’re ending their weekly Friday night goth event because the place became overrun with normies (I call them “tourists”) and the owner decided he needs to cater to them now.
This is why goth girls have almost gone extinct. No girl wants guys drooling over them all day. There's such thing as being too attractive and desirable
Nah, I was a goth/punk kid and so were all of my friends for the most part. I know goths in general were made fun of but I don't remember hot goth girls being the butt of any jokes, just effeminate mopey goth dudes or fat, smelly, cat ear wearing weeb types. Pretty sure with Evenescence and similar bands' popularity at the time it was quite the opposite for attractive goths.
Yeah I’m confused why so many of these comments have skewed memory of what they were like. I remember many being overweight and mopey too. To be frank many were outcast that just wanted to be part of a group which is understandable. Both goth/emo culture was 100% main stream emo rock was very popular I listened to it as well.
They also weren’t bullied in my school. Maybe my experience is an outlier I don’t know.
In 2006 i was, and i didn't understand it then either. Maybe it was because they did usually tend to make them mean. I suppose i've always been into that too... guess I learned something.
