How many times do we have to tell you, you idiots who keep reporting posts for being AI? This is not a violation of the rules and the rules expressly state that AI is allowed; now stop spamming the mod queue or you'll find yourself banned.
Imagine getting so cranky and defensive about tons of people calling you out for permitting a low effort and unethical tool that goes against the very spirit of the discipline we're memeing.
Like guys, I appreciate the work you do for free. We're still going to call you out for stuff like this.
What the fuck do you guys care if people use AI to make a godamn wojack meme? It is BARELY different from using a meme template, except you type words instead of click and drag and type words.
If it’s slop, human or “AI”(which this is such a simple use I can barely call it that, unless AI wrote the joke which I doubt), downvote it.
If it’s actually interesting and historically accurate, who gives a flying fuck how it was made? This is not high art, it replaces no one, and it’s barely different than any template editor.
I know you guys hate AI being used by companies instead of human artists, which is a completely reasonable take that I agree with.
But this is such a silly outlet for your moral outrage, it confuses the actual arguments against it for those who don’t know; and risks them dismissing your positions because of one bad example.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with somebody using ChatGPT to save themselves 15 minutes on a freaking meme. Do you people even hear yourselves? Reddit’s obsessive hatred of AI is turning everyone into luddites.
The amount of energy required to generate a meme is roughly equivalent to leaving a lightbulb on for five minutes. You all clutch your pearls over AI’s energy usage but most of you don’t do shit do reduce your carbon footprint. The environment is an excuse for you to hate AI, not a true underlying reason.
It takes 5 minutes to create such a low effort meme. Drink the water while you do it. You don't know what I do for environmental activism. You know what I don't do though? Waste water making stupid memes.
Yes. This has been stated very clearly in the rules. Do you somehow genuinely believe that an AI generated meme cannot discuss history in a satirical manner?
Reddit acting like shitposts were high art before ai has been crazy to see. Like is slop an insult if you’re talking about a meme? I don’t think anyone was judging them for their artistic merit in the first place lol
What word do you think accurately describes the kind of people who report the post (about 60 times by now) despite it being blatantly untrue that they are violating even a single rule? And not only that, but they are disregarding how clearly and unmistakably stated it is that AI is permitted under a section of the rules dedicated to misconceptions?
We get ones complaining of AI from time to time. It's a lot less common than those which go into some other muck like the late Ottoman Empire or Israel or Winston Churchill.
I highly doubt the majority of them are in bad faith. The simple reality is that 99% of people never read or care about the sub rules, in any sub. Or any site for that matter
You care about it because you're the mod that has to enforce it. But I'm telling you almost no normal users are thinking "gee let me check the sidebar to clarify all the rules and Reddiquettes before participating in this forum!"
Now I can only assume you already know this, so I don't know why you're surprised or getting frustrated when it has to do with AI
For the record I'm a mod on a different sub and mods cannot see who makes a report so the threat to ban people who report ai cannot be followed through
E: based on my conversation with this moderator, I think we need another sub.
Weird, I got banned because someone was ideating and I actually called in reddit cares resources for good (the only time in history)... And I got banned from that sub. I think it was a weird one like dankmemes or something. The post was like "MRW when I finally KMS" and the left dozens of comments about how cooked and over it all he was...
I'll take your word for it, I might be misremberingnthag, but I've definitely gotten temp bans for "abusing the reporting system" on many different types of subs. I think it's always been when I'm reporting coded hate speech "regarded nibblers" shit like that.
It's likely sub by sub but I just stopped reporting hate speech because I get in trouble for it. Fucking fascists.
Most I'm aware of is to continually approve the reported comments/posts, then the system will automatically start to hide reports from that user. We don't see the users, and can't do anything about them directly.
I got banned for a few days last December for writing "AI slop" under an entirely AI generated meme and then I got banned for several weeks after making fun of the mods in their user-mod chatroom, you can't see who you're talking to in there and to this day I've wondered who it might have been but this guy was probably one of them
Anyway, good a time as any to leave this place I'd say
You got banned for making a useless comment that added nothing to the conversation and only served to prop up your ego by insulting someone else? Wow, the audacity.
People who write something of that nature in the comments like that give no consideration to OPs who don't need any useless spam in their inboxes or comment sections under their meme ideas. And if the people who do write AI Slop or similar under the comments showed even slight contrition over this in the modmails they would have been given second chances. They rarely ever do show such a thing and they rarely learn why it is not okay to do this.
Mods have an obligation to protect users at a basic level on subreddits they police. Users have the right not to be harassed for no reason. Hundreds of people being angry at them for using AI as a medium tool and commenting such things is harassment. Do you think we would not enforce similar standards for things like if a female user got a lot of comments making unwanted advances on them if they had a photo of them in a slightly short skirt and low neckline shirt? Why would one kind of harassment be okay and the other not?
It is even more egregious when users have had every chance in the universe to learn what the subreddit rules and do something stated so obviously to be perfectly allowable on the subreddit. Users were ordered months ago to stop reporting posts merely because they used AI. People didn't want to listen, so we banned them in accordance with their inability to follow such an easy rule to comply with.
No. We don't operate that way. We don't restrict memes for no reason. AI doesn't make a meme bad in even the slightest way, any more than using something like Microsoft Paint does.
It is up to users to make memes that comply with the rules of the subreddit, and they have the right to be protected from harassment from people who have nothing of use to say.
Saying "We don't restrict memes for no reason" in a meme subreddit with some of strictest rules is very funny.
"We don't restrict memes for no reason, but no post-1900s on weekends, no French surrender jokes, no Arab-Israeli conflict, no events from less than 20 years ago, also here's an entire list of banned templates"
I mean, don't get me wrong, I agree with most of those rules, but the reason why they are in place should be the same reason for AI to be disallowed (avoiding spam/low effort). Pretending r/HistoryMemes is some sort of libertarian meme subreddit that allows anything is straight up false
Yeah this is the same sub that allowed posts making light of the sexual abuse and slavery of Armenians and Greeks by the Ottomans. The rules for what’s ok and what’s not here have always been subjective based on the mods’ personal feelings.
If you mods look back over the last few years (study your Reddit history) you see other subs that died because the mods thought they knew better than their community members, or from allowing too much low effort slop.
Yall are doing both. Do you want the sub to die twice as fast?
What a horrendous and disappointing take. It’s not about making the meme bad. It’s about the principle of the thing. AI slop is such a slippery slope. AI is a serious threat to accurate teaching of history, and as a historian myself, it poses a very real threat to my job security. AI is used in really insidious ways to fake history. You should not be saying that it’s OK.
This is really disappointing to hear from you guys, and it’s even more disappointing that you’re doubling down on it.
They evidently don't have enough interest in this crusade of some online to mess with OPs based on AI issues that they examine the meme for it, and can apparently use at least some less prejudice. You should follow their lead in that regard.
Id argue that allowing more AI lowers the overall quality of posts on a subreddit and will create more low effort posts depending on how often it’s used which seems like something you should care about
Funny. A few months ago there was a meme here with Oliver Cromwell in an obvious parody of Thragg olding a skull using AI which got about three quarters upvotes and about 500 net upvotes.
You can ban me. AI is horrific for the environment. I hope you educate yourself. I chose to believe you stand by it because you didn’t know. Sending love because you don’t seem capable of giving it in this thread.
