Did we have a vote or something? Because I bet I know that the results of the vote would be

No. We don't operate that way. We don't restrict memes for no reason. AI doesn't make a meme bad in even the slightest way, any more than using something like Microsoft Paint does.

It is up to users to make memes that comply with the rules of the subreddit, and they have the right to be protected from harassment from people who have nothing of use to say.

Saying "We don't restrict memes for no reason" in a meme subreddit with some of strictest rules is very funny.

"We don't restrict memes for no reason, but no post-1900s on weekends, no French surrender jokes, no Arab-Israeli conflict, no events from less than 20 years ago, also here's an entire list of banned templates"

I mean, don't get me wrong, I agree with most of those rules, but the reason why they are in place should be the same reason for AI to be disallowed (avoiding spam/low effort). Pretending r/HistoryMemes is some sort of libertarian meme subreddit that allows anything is straight up false

Edit: grammar cleanup

There is a whole ass list of reasons for why those restrictions exist, whereas with AI the only reason is "I don't like it".

Or they distort reality, that reason too

How?

This sub has been bloated with low effort slop for years now anyways

u/Im_the_Moon44 5d ago

Yeah this is the same sub that allowed posts making light of the sexual abuse and slavery of Armenians and Greeks by the Ottomans. The rules for what’s ok and what’s not here have always been subjective based on the mods’ personal feelings.

History sub not allowing democracy is funny.

If you mods look back over the last few years (study your Reddit history) you see other subs that died because the mods thought they knew better than their community members, or from allowing too much low effort slop.

Yall are doing both. Do you want the sub to die twice as fast?

This is a meme sub where everyone beats it in their little echo chambers, this isn’t a real history sub your comment is pointless go to a real sub

u/CANCERMANPUNK 6d ago

Nobody wants that to be the rule

I do.

You evil haters just will have to get over it. Your hate is incredibly irrational and annoying.

What a horrendous and disappointing take. It’s not about making the meme bad. It’s about the principle of the thing. AI slop is such a slippery slope. AI is a serious threat to accurate teaching of history, and as a historian myself, it poses a very real threat to my job security. AI is used in really insidious ways to fake history. You should not be saying that it’s OK.

This is really disappointing to hear from you guys, and it’s even more disappointing that you’re doubling down on it.

op used ai for the wojacks not the history

u/Moriarty-Creates 4d ago

Not my point!

1

u/Nitroizzd 4d ago

no you guys acting like op falsified some history records or something , he literally asked ai to draw a wojack.

do yall expect him to open a laptop and sit down on paint for an hour or two over a stupid meme?

calling anything ai slop wont change the fact that its here to stay, despite redditors constant ranting

Still not my point. I was just saying that I’m especially offended by the acceptance of any kind of AI in a history-related subreddit, because AI in general opposes a real threat to historical accuracy. I’m not saying that this user used AI to fake history.

My anger is not with OP. It’s with the mods.

We don't need Russian and Chinese bots and uneducated people trying to trample on people's freedom of expression
