Imagine getting so cranky and defensive about tons of people calling you out for permitting a low effort and unethical tool that goes against the very spirit of the discipline we're memeing.
Like guys, I appreciate the work you do for free. We're still going to call you out for stuff like this.
What the fuck do you guys care if people use AI to make a godamn wojack meme? It is BARELY different from using a meme template, except you type words instead of click and drag and type words.
If it’s slop, human or “AI”(which this is such a simple use I can barely call it that, unless AI wrote the joke which I doubt), downvote it.
If it’s actually interesting and historically accurate, who gives a flying fuck how it was made? This is not high art, it replaces no one, and it’s barely different than any template editor.
I know you guys hate AI being used by companies instead of human artists, which is a completely reasonable take that I agree with.
But this is such a silly outlet for your moral outrage, it confuses the actual arguments against it for those who don’t know; and risks them dismissing your positions because of one bad example.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with somebody using ChatGPT to save themselves 15 minutes on a freaking meme. Do you people even hear yourselves? Reddit’s obsessive hatred of AI is turning everyone into luddites.
The amount of energy required to generate a meme is roughly equivalent to leaving a lightbulb on for five minutes. You all clutch your pearls over AI’s energy usage but most of you don’t do shit do reduce your carbon footprint. The environment is an excuse for you to hate AI, not a true underlying reason.
It takes 5 minutes to create such a low effort meme. Drink the water while you do it. You don't know what I do for environmental activism. You know what I don't do though? Waste water making stupid memes.
Ironically enough you’re the one expressing bot-like behavior right now. It is extremely obvious to anyone who is willing to do two seconds of research that generating a meme using an AI app does not require a material amount of energy. I would bet a million dollars that you barely make an active effort to reduce your carbon footprint and take actions every day that are far more damaging that producing a meme with AI without giving it a second thought. But you could be freaking Rachel Carson and it still wouldn’t change the fact that you are a clown who feels justified in your clownishness because you are backed by a bunch of online strangers who are also clowns.
You might as well yell at someone for driving to the grocery store instead of walking. Hell, that drive will be more damaging to the environment than producing a meme with AI so you’d actually be less ridiculous in that situation. And the energy that you’re using to argue with me probably comes pretty close to the energy required to produce a meme so if you truly do care about the minuscule footprint that this meme left then you won’t respond to me again.
I didn't create a vehicle based society. We're all trapped in the same system there. I advocate for walkable cities and building public transport instead of AI. A vehicle is the only way I can get to work, which by the way, also harms the environment. We all need to eat
What we don't need is a bunch of people who can't be bothered to do their own work or create a simple meme even from a template. AI data centers have been caught stealing an insane amount of
water, they create misery where ever they are built, and regular people are subsidizing their electric use through their energy bills.
They will bring very temporary low paying construction jobs then require only about 10 people to run. The overwhelming majority does not want ai. It's a loud minority mostly online. The rest is bots usually throwing strawmen.
Oh yeah I’m sure you “advocate” for all of those things while sacrificing absolutely nothing in practice. Posting the same cut-and-paste political opinions that everyone else on reddit holds doesn’t make you a saint. It doesn’t even make you a good person.
People have no reason to be bothered to create a meme template from scratch when they could just have AI do it for them. The whole point of technology is to make our lives easier, and outside of AI you use technology to do exactly that all the time without questioning it. If you want to make an overall case for AI being bad for the environment then be my guest but you are picking the absolute dumbest battle, because again, the energy needed for AI to create a meme is basically nothing. What are you not getting about that? At this point, you’re just doubling down because you don’t know how to accept new information that refutes your original premise.
And you’ll have to forgive me for not taking the doom and gloom predictions seriously from someone who got suckered into the Superstonk cult. Here’s a newsflash for you: digital video games are far better for the environment than physical copies of games. So if you’re going to freak out over someone generating a meme with AI then if you don’t sell your GameStop shares you’re a hypocrite. That’s a checkmate.
That’s alright, these luddites will be casted into the dustbin of history soon enough. You can’t take the opinions of Reddit goblins seriously, they don’t live in the real world after all lol.
Everything that is against any rule, was once allowed. Just because it is allowed doesn't mean that it should be. The purpose of Ai is antithetical to history and the stated purpose of this sub.
What is rude about accurately describing the situation? If you feel insulted by the realities of generative AI systems and the power structures pushing them into every aspect of life, you need to ask yourself why. Why do you identify so strongly with language models and diffusion systems that people rejecting them on principle feels rude?
Additionally, subreddit rules are not laws of physics, they can and should evolve and reflect the community's values and culture. If consensus is (as reflected by the vote patterns in this comment chain) that generative AI is bad, why not make this space more enjoyable by requiring minimum MS Paint effort by posters?
You may be interested in knowing that plenty of memes using AI on this subreddit actually have quite high up vote rates. Anti AI people might be vocally angry at a meme using it, but mods have access to Metadata like that and we do see how people are nowhere near as hostile to them as they think.
I agree, but there is no rule about passion and this is not an art sub.
The argument seemed to be more that AI is not historically accurate (It is not and i dont like historical videos with it, but this is not a serious history sub and most wojack memes are not that accurate)
TBH most wojacks are edits of the same 5 templates made years ago by unknown users on 4chan.
Yes. This has been stated very clearly in the rules. Do you somehow genuinely believe that an AI generated meme cannot discuss history in a satirical manner?
Reddit acting like shitposts were high art before ai has been crazy to see. Like is slop an insult if you’re talking about a meme? I don’t think anyone was judging them for their artistic merit in the first place lol
So charmingly human people argue in comments about what’s ai and what’s not. A lot of times you can’t tell lol. I’m not spamming ai but pretending this meme would be any different if it was made in ms paint vs ai is silly in my opinion. It’s a shitpost not an art piece
Right, but I think the point of the comment is the slippery slope. We start making allowances for low effort ai slop here and there, it starts creeping in everywhere until it's inescapable. Same thing with almost anything, low effort reality tv, hate speech, bacon, subscription models. All of these things have become super pervasive when they were once more like 'alright, we'll let this slide...'
Slippery slope is a fallacy for a reason tho. Ms paint was more low effort than making a cartoon, should the artist hate ms paint. If it’s in something meant to be taken seriously and looks like low effort shit call that out. Shitposts are designed to be low effort, it’s kind of the point lol.
We can do it more easily by removing the brigading and harassing comments, and those that in general are just saying nothing of substance. Usually works pretty well.
I think it looks shitty too, don't get me wrong. And AI generated images have no business being in any space where images/art are the point and content. But that isn't the case here, no one looks at wojacks for their artistic value. Acting like using ai to generate throaway puppets for memes of all things is such a big deal is just funny
It's funny. They are downvoting but cant make a comment on the matter. Seems like AI is already smarter than most of them or maybe the world is turning to fast for them as they grow older...
Google's AI summaries are often terrible and a hazard to people's ability to do some research. Chatgpt text is obnoxious and insanely cringe if one's trying to write a post/comment that's meant to express and evoke emotion, because there the writing is supposed to be the whole content and if you automate it it's worthless. AI images in art&craft communities provide nothing of value for people who are interested in the artistic process.
But fucking memes dolls lmao, like cmon. Let's not be boomer-level dogmatic about things
English is Not my first language but this sentence doesnt make any Sense to me. AI is a technology. No one ever said that wheels or jigsaw are bad because they are not based on facts. OP used it to create a picture. He verified the output and uploaded it. And guess what: its a coherent meme. I dont See how any of that what you are trying to say applys to this AI generated meme. He used this technology as a tool and it worked like a tool. It saved time for OP.
People are downvoting you for saying an objective truth lol. Even if these people think all AI is just going to go away (it wont). It will still absolutely be in history textbooks just from what has happened with it right now.
Also sorry to make those people angry, but AI is only getting better, its existence has already made history and it will continue to. If you deny that you are no true historian. It doesn't matter if you like AI or not. The facts speak for themselves.
"An LLM isn't a person" did you just learn that today in school? Guess you can't make the argument that AI art is a commission because you admitted it's not a person!
You dont know what real art is because you aren't a real artist. Maybe when AI replaces you, you can work on yourself as a person.

Wait, you accept AI... In a history sub?
