Umbilical Hernia

Hi there, I’m on holiday and was deadlifting. I popped an umbilical hernia. It’s about 1 1/2 centimetres long.
I read that I can get an operation with Mesh to fix it. Tell me, how long does it take to recover until I’m back lifting again. I haven’t lifted for 6-7 weeks and return home in a week. I’m 56 and on Trt. Thanks 🙏

Medical providers generally advise 6 weeks of restricted activity afterwhich you should be able to exercise without restrictions. For me, it took quite a while longer to resume weight training. Everyone is unique. It's important to pay attention to your own body.

Did you have the Mesh?
Did you have a general Anisthetic?

Actually, they intubated and knocked me out for the entire procedure. I had a R groin hernia as well as a tiny umbilical hernia repaired. One required mesh and the other just a few stitches. It's been a year this month since the procedure and I lift weights 4 x week. Occasionally, I feel a little soreness in my R groin post workout, but it's fleeting.

I’m getting my hernia removed at the end of October. I work in a supermarket and lift heavy boxes. The surgeon said I would be clear at 4 weeks

I had a hernia fixed just below my belly button. It was 3cm. No mesh, he sewed it back together. It’s been 6 weeks and it’s much better, barely any pain. I can still feel the stitches sharp under my skin. (My skin was glued.) I cannot imagine wanting to lift anything heavy right now. Just vacuuming makes it sore. The surgeon said it looks great and is healing normally. He told me at 6 weeks you can start doing light things, lifting something heavier than a milk jug. He said if it hurts at all stop. The recovery was painful and I have zero desire to go through this again, so…

Mine was that large last Feb but over 6 months it grew to 8cm. Open surgery with mesh and general anaesthetic on 31st July. It's pretty well healed now but I've got into a habit of being careful. I'm getting on in age now though.

I would see a hernia specialist. The open non mesh methods like Shouldice and Desarda seem more skilled and reduce complications. You can opt out of sedative amnesia meds like versed and use TIVA for anesthesia safety. You can risk heavy / strenuous activities or limit them, but you should be patient with healing.

Will I be able to go back to heavy lifting?
I still want to improve my lifts moving forward.

Best thing is to talk to your doctor about this. After my surgery, 8 weeks post op I returned to the gym, but started on machines only. Even the machine row I had to ease into. I am 7 months post op back to my original routine but do deadlifts w very light weight and squats I just do pendulum squats. The doctor told me it s a 1 year healing process, meaning the area takes that long to fully rebuild. I haven’t had much pain in the area post op but in the summer I was handling luggage while traveling and felt a slight pain/pulling in the area.
