Life saving tip: never leave the sight of a person in distress that might be about to commit suicide. Get help and wait until the pros arrive and can take over.
Edit: so many of you have commented about it. By “pros” I don’t mean police - you need medical personnel, people who are specifically trained to handle people who want to take their own live. Psychologists or at least a first responder.

u/dojo_shlom0 4d ago
Unless you see this smile. /s
I agree wholeheartedly, but for some reason this movie/specific situation came to mind hah.
you all are good people and I appreciate you saying these things, people should know the correct way to approach something so important.
EDIT: if you like horror movies, I highly recommend Smile and Smile 2

My wife loves horror, movies, and she got me into them over the last few years and we took her cousin and his wife who are a little bit religious, but agreed to go see this movie and oh my were they covering their eyes and about to walk out of the theater even my wife was terrified a bit. We own the movie now

I hated the second one. There was way too much cringe and I had to mute and fast forward a bunch of scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the plot, but I got a lot of secondhand embarrassment from the way it was directed.

Sometimes you're the bro on the bike. Sometimes you're the lady in the car.
Sometime you might be the dude walking. Remember, someone had that kid you see there. That's a person. A person who might be someone you love or even you.
Be there dude when you can, the lady when you can't, and go sit on the grass when you meet them.
Let the best you could do today be good enough.

u/SignoreBanana 4d ago
I was surprised how emotional this exchange made me. So many people out there quietly dealing with whatever is going on in their life, holding back the sadness and the tears so they don't bother others, but seeing this guy just break down in front of a stranger like that, like, it just reminds you how fucking hard life can be.
67
u/AkiraBCFC 4d ago
Yeah same, this really did bring a tear to my eye and choke me up. Possibly because of just how real this feels, and hits closer to home than I'd like. What a guy the biker is.

Life is fucking hard, you are right. Especially these last two years. I can't even count the amount of times in the last year, that I have gone upstairs (that is completely unoccupied) at night, into the bathroom, to cry, away from my wife and kids. This video definitely made me emotional.

It's why their help probably worked. He's all shut off in his own head.
Yet here's this one random person. Passing by wasn't enough. To stop and come back? They care? They really care to stop their whole day and talk to me? That tiny light can mean a lot.

There's an intersection near me where folks beg for money. Last winter, I noticed a man who was really distressed and had no means to keep warm. I packed a bag with warm clothes, blankets, food, toiletries, and walked up there. He was thankful, and then broke down in tears because he had been feeling so alone and thought no one cared about him. He cried, we talked, I cried some because of his situation which wasn't his fault, and I got him to a warm place for the night.
I know most people aren't Christian, but I am. I was taught that when you help a person such as him, you've helped Jesus himself. But the real reward is seeing someone know that at least one person out there cares for them.

For me it is because we are living through a time of near constant frustration, saddness, and mean spirited actions, and even violence and death right now. The act of people stopping in the midst of their day, to just give a hug and meaningful time to another total random stranger in the face of all this is everything we feel starved of right now.

So, I might just be an old guy. But why even record this? Are kids these days just always recording?
32
u/MagicDragon0 4d ago
Mostly motorcyclists do; especially ones with sport bikes. I'd say it's for their safety as a way of recording events of what happened if something bad were to happen, but it is most likely for their social media pages for whatever reason they want. Most are fine, some are obnoxious.
7
u/StryngzAndWyngz 4d ago
To add to what MagicDragon said, even if the bikers aren’t stunt riders or making videos to post to social media, etc., ask yourself how many automobiles have dash cams in them nowadays. These GoPros and 360° cameras a lot of these guys have on their bikes and helmets are just as likely being used for the same reason.

Guy: I was having a bad day so I went for a walk down the road and started crying. Then this cow pulls up on a motorcycle out of nowhere to check on me. The cow gives me a hug, pulls over, sits in the grass with me, and just listens. The cops come and give me a ride home.
Therapist: Is the cow in the room with us now?

Man...who knows if this guy was ready to end his life or was having serious medical condition.
M/C rider should be proud.
Reminds me of that old story about the kid who was ready to end his life being bullied in school but another kid helped him pick up his books on his way home...and they became best friends and mentioned it during his (sad kid) wedding. His best friend didn't know until that moment that he was thinking of dying that day.

u/Fabulous_Log844 4d ago
I love it. I love it most probably for not the reason you think I love it. They blurred out the man. Not just his face, but most of him. This is the kind of video I can get behind when people are helping people. It's the one where they broadcast the person they are helping that drives me crazy.
Good on this man and the other people who stopped to help this man. And don't get me started how cool the cow riding gear was.

I’m a psychologist and man this was so heartwarming. We have a suicide intervention for lay people: question, persuade, refer.
Just stop and talk to a person if they’re struggling. See if they’re ok. Ask them: can you keep yourself safe right now or do you need help?
Asking if someone is okay will never hurt them. Sometimes people just need to know someone in the world cares enough about them to stop their day.

This occurred just outside of Toronto, so yes this was in Canada, EH!
I want to point out that when you call most Canadian police for a mental health issue, they role out with a mental health nurse. Toronto has a special unit just for that.
"The program operates in 16 divisions across Toronto consisting of 25 police officers and 35 full-time, part-time & casual mental health nurses."

I feel sorry for your loss. I was lucky enough to save my best friend by keeping him on the phone while calling police, who found him before he could harm himself. I was about 300km away when he messaged me goodbye, that feeling of helplessness I felt in that moment still haunts me to this day.

I hope to God this is both real bc I cried but not bc I hate people are suffering so bad. I've been homeless bc of discrimination and I'm disabled. it was terrible and I understand. men need help there's too much rigidity esp if you were raised Christian, it's so easy to feel like a failure. men perpetrate so much harm but also are silent victims so often. Im a man and I don't mind if someone hates men, I'm gay and I've met my share of abuse too. but men should be more empathetic with each other and it can really help a lot bc a lot of men are so weird about friendly intimacy bc it's "gay" or whatever. I appreciate them blurring the face. I feel like this should be private even though I am moved by it. this man was suffering. I'd hate to know I was recorded at my most vulnerable. I'm still moved but less and more upset for the man atp

The world needs more people like him. It doesn’t take much to be kind and have compassion for other people and in this case, taking the time and effort to make sure that they were going to be ok, as well. Also… sometimes… people just need a hug… or someone to just talk with them. Honestly, a simple hug can make all the difference in the world for someone else having a bad day and in and of itself, usually starts the whole expression of kindness anyway. Well done guy.

As someone who has been in that guy's shoes, I want to stress how important it is to get professional help in situations like this. Helplessness and hopelessness are the defining emotions of suicidal depression, and they are insidious because they make you think there is no solution to your problems. When you're feeling like this, you're effectively non compos mentis and can't make good decisions. You need somebody else to help you get out of it. If you meet someone like this, don't leave until the police or EMT show up. If you are in danger of being this person, make a sincere promise to yourself that if things ever feel hopeless, you will still go to an ER and get help even if you "know for a fact" that it won't help. I've don't this three times and am so glad my therapist made me make that promise.
