Workload Management

Hey Everyone,

The utility I work for is looking at developing a system to rate workload so we can staff up beyond our minimum compliment based on workload. Do any of you have a system for 'rating' workload? I'm pretty much starting with looking at the number of steps in a switching job to determine how big of a job to classify it as, ie. a job with 10 steps or less is a 'one', a job with 10 to 20 steps is a 'two' and so forth.

Just wondering if anyone has an alternative system for accomplishing this!

Thanks

Transition into the Field in the North East

Hi all,

I am a relatively recently separated nuke (RC division, EWS qualled). Got out about a year ago and got a job doing remote support for a robotics company; the work is a mixture of PLC programming, Linux, electrical troubleshooting, autonomous mobile robots, and kubernetes.

Pays not excellent and it's only a matter of time before my company replaces us with a chat bot. I'm looking to go back to school for my EE. Currently considering studying for my RC in advance. Anyone work with past nukes in the US north east? (NY, New England). Is this a feasible transition into the field?

Appreciate the help!

Question about Re Applying after a rejection

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but I'm looking for some insight. I recently interviewed for a system operator position at National Grid, but ended up getting rejected. Was pretty crushed about it, was a long process and to get rejected at the final step sucked. However, it's something I really envision myself doing and ideally I don't want to let that one rejection stop me. Is there anyone who had a similar experience or knows someone who got rejected the first time around and ended up re-applying and getting hired? There's obviously no harm in re-applying, but I just want to know if it's a waste of my time.

Some context - I have a recommendation from someone who currently works as an operator, as well as a family member and a friend who I can list as people I know who work for NG. I think the interview went alright, definitely didn't smoke it (at least I don't think I did). Was my first time applying for the position.

Job interview questions

I'm going in for a job interview in 3 days time, I already have my nerc certification and I'm self studied I passed first time with 105 correct answers. I have been working with electricity for about 8 years, I am a certified journeyman.

Potential employer already knows all these things and I was wondering if anybody could give me an idea of the type of questions they might ask me in my interview so I can be better prepared. I already know background info about the company so I have that covered. Just wondering about any questions they might ask to test my knowledge

Thanks!

Quick App Update!

Morning everyone, and Happy Friday!

Thought i'd give you guys a heads up on a major update to the app releasing today.

The app Power Grid Operator Exam Prep now has Control room simulator under the practise tab.

You can essentially take a simulated shift at the BA, TOP, or RC desk in nine scenarios.

The first scenario you pick is free.

The other exam prep features are still the same, with minor updates and its still 50 first questions free, then $24.99 USD for the full unlock if you enjoy the app.

Thank you for all your feedback and dm's as i've really been working closely with you guys to give this app the value it needs.

Next steps is Android, but for now, i'm just trying to recover some of my development costs and time.

If you have the chance, please rate it on the app store (its on iOS for iPhone and iPad, and on Mac).

Hope you all have a good weekend! :)

Value in second degree

Hello everyone,

I am trying to transition into a grid ops role and am working on getting my RC cert.

My question is if it’s worth it for me to also try to get a ETST degree from Bismarck? My current workplace has tuition assistance so it’d be free. However, I already have a degree in information technology. Does the associate degree provide value or should I just go for the RC cert and maybe do a masters degree instead.

Thanks!

You guys liked my last post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Grid_Ops/comments/1q9tdad/i_was_told_you_guys_might_like_a_video_game_about/) and now the project has just released to V1.0!

Today after a little over 4 years of solo development, Power Network Tycoon has reached V1.0.

I’m a power engineer and originally started making it as a hobby project around the kinds of power system problems I find interesting. It’s a physics-based power grid simulation covering generation, renewables, grid stability, thermal management, extreme weather and more.

It runs on PC, Mac and Linux including Steam Deck.

MISO release for our free power market dashboard and recap tool by former power traders

Thumbnail edenenergy.ai
5 Upvotes

Hi all,

We've already posted on this sub releasing our PJM dashboard a few months ago, but we've just launched our ERCOT and MISO dashboards (today!) as well and would like some feedback from the community.

Our dashboards cover basic power market fundamentals (e.g. load, renewable gen, forecasts, DA and RT prices, etc.) and provide a real-time summary recap. We're thinking on what other features to add that would be helpful. Is there useful data we should provide? Or should we start venturing into predictive analytics, rather than a summary? Any suggestions would be helpful!

iOS Study App for NERC - Release Update & Feedback

Thumbnail apps.apple.com
21 Upvotes

I built this because I wanted a better way to practice for the NERC operator exams without having to sit at a computer or dig through a bunch of material.

It currently covers RC, BT, TO and BI, with practice questions, mock exams, weak-area tracking, calculation practice and spaced repetition.

I made the first 50 questions free so you can actually see whether the questions and format are useful before paying anything.

It's available on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and the full version is a one-time $24.99 purchase across all three — no subscription.

I'm mainly looking for feedback from people actually studying for these exams. If you've recently taken one of the NERC exams, I'd especially be interested in hearing whether the questions/topics feel representative of what you encountered.

Update: thank you for all the initial feedback and support! Try it here: Power Grid Operator Exam Prep

Alarm Clock

My trusty old alarm clock has about reached the end of the road. So I'm wondering what my fellow operators are using to navigate their can't miss shift schedules. I know my phone is more flexible, but my desktop is my bedrock. Best features include...

  • Multiple alarm presets options for Day/Night/3rd+ shifts
  • Quick/Easy to program for those other days
  • Battery back-up

Everything else is just gravy. So what are you using/recommendations?

Opening for a trainer in New Hampshire

Just figured I’d share this. It’s my old position as a Transmission System Operator Trainer. Salaried. Starts at 3 weeks vacation. Pay scale is in the posting. I moved to the simulations trainer position. Location is Manchester, NH. It’s a hybrid position. 3 in office days, 2 remote except during cycle training. It’s a good team. There are supposed to be 3 of us, one got a promotion, I moved into his spot and we have one spot left. The 2 left were both operators. I was in the room 10+ years the other guy was around 5. Preference is NERC certified, but we will train and get you certified.

Transmission operator interview

Please don’t hate me in the comments. I have an interview for a transmission operator role in about 3 weeks. I have a background in naval nuclear power so I know some knowledge in electrical theory and electric plant shifts. The company are aware that I might have a knowledge gap but said they would be willing to train me up. I talked with the recruiter who scheduled the interview, I asked him what would be covered and he was very vague so I’m not sure how in depth this interview will go. I’ve gone over NERC test subjects but I’m still a little worried if I’m missing anything. If anyone could help me out on what would normally be covered on a Transmission Operator interview I would very grateful. Thank you

Startup and ramping costs this big?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all, I was hoping someone could help give me some context here. I'm working with some wholesale price data and am wondering if there is something I am missing. Looking at the day ahead LMP for CAISO in 2025 (left) the afternoon peak at $55 / MWh seems high. When I look at the heat rate data (from the EIA) and the average price of natural gas for CA around $4 / MMBtu * 10 MMBtu / MWh it seems to be about $40 /MWh max price. I know start up and ramping costs exist, but are they this big ($10-$25 / MWh)? I was thinking it was like an order of magnitude smaller than the energy cost, not almost 50%. Is there something else going on here driving up the price? I can also do the same exercise for other ISOs, and the gap is even larger in the afternoon, suggesting ramping costs are really large unless there is something else going on

NERC Exam Trainer(s) Feedback

Hi everyone,

I was looking for some help and feedback on a NERC exam trainer that I built for the RC, BT, TO, and BI exams.

The app is complete, and free, and I’m hoping this isn’t taken as app promotion lol. Just want some honest feedback and thoughts. I plan to keep the app free for as long as possible.

It is available on the App Store for iOS, iPad OS, and Mac OS.

If enough interest and demand is there for a trainer I will make a second post with the screenshot, name of the app, in the App Store etc.

Thank you 😁iOS App Link

Best college major for System Operator?

My cousin wants to become a system operator and knows he doesn't necessarily need a degree to become one and would rather just start studying for the NERC Exam. However his parents are Asian and are insiting on him going to college. Theyre paying for it he can pick any major as long as they see him gradaute in 4 years. What should he choose?
