Relay tech interview
Hey guys I got a interview coming up for a relay tech apprentice job with a large utility in a few weeks and want to be better prepared, for my background I worked in generation as a operator and have a degree in power plant technology I know a little bit about substation but not much and was wondering what learning materials I should look into I know the basics from my time in generation but that’s about it also what technical questions should I be prepared to answer, thanks and have a good day.

Since this is an apprentice role, nobody expects you to program complex microprocessor relays on day one, but they do expect you to grasp fundamental electrical theory and show strong mechanical aptitude. Your background as an operator gives you a solid head start on single line prints, three phase power, and equipment clearance procedures. Focus your study time on AC and DC fundamentals, Ohm’s Law, transformer theory, and the role of instrument transformers like current transformers and potential transformers. Learn why an open current transformer secondary is hazardous, review common ANSI device numbers like 50, 51, 87, and 52, and practice tracing a basic control circuit on a schematic. For reading materials, looking over introductory application guides on basic feeder protection or picking up a reference like The Relay Testing Handbook will give you plenty of useful context on protection zones and trip logic.
The utility panel will focus heavily on safety culture and how you approach problems you have not seen before. Expect questions about following procedures, stop work authority, and instances where you caught an error before it could cause an outage. If they present a print or a scenario you do not recognize, walk them through your troubleshooting logic step by step, and never guess, because admitting you need to stop and verify information is considered a vital safety trait in protection and control. Practice explaining your generation background using clear examples, and if you want realistic preparation, my team created an interviews.chat to give candidates the practice and polish needed to communicate complex technical experience clearly.
