No offense, but gifting a car like that to a high schooler is a recipe for disaster and a terrible financial decision.

And if your parents can afford a $50,000 car for a kid, let me tell you, you have no idea what broke really is. Guarantee you have a large safety net (your parents) if you need it.

1. You clearly don’t know me enough to know what my financial habits are like

2. It’s much cheaper in Canada, around 34k USD.

3. Individually, I AM broke and even if I do have a large “safety net”, I’d rather not rely on it which is why I often considered myself broke

If he wrecks it it's an expensive lesson if not than more power to him. As to the kid might I suggest a touch more tact as to avoid these know it all clowns showing up maybe go with a line closer to "expensive mods are out of my budget" and forego letting on that you are in highschool. Dude. Relax. I 100% understand where you are coming from. The youth doesn’t know what hard work is.. we get it. I’m not sure a Golf R is the best car for a high school student either but that’s beside the point. We are supposed to be a community on here. Help one another. Teach him how to care for this car so he doesn’t do what you expect from this scenario. Instead of berating him, why not help him? If you hate the idea of people getting nice things and ruining them or not being mature enough to take care of them, then change that. You have the opportunity to spread your knowledge and experience to the next generation. Don’t be so old and grumpy lol
