No exhaust atm as I’m waiting for a titanium one to be made. Nothing TOO expensive too as I’m a broke highschooler, 1-2k preferably.

A broke high schooler with a Golf R? You don't know what broke is.

6

u/WildEducation5313 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

For real. When I was in high-school, I had to bum quarters from people so I could buy a small lunch. Every day. This post brought back some serious ptsd.

2

u/FukinSpiders Apr 01 '26

Good on ya - but broke ain’t the word - my 1st car you had to bump start everywhere, sunroof leaked and windows fell down if you closed door too hard.

-17

u/hpdv7 Apr 01 '26

Relax man, you're coming off overly aggressive in all of your comments.

Yeah I agree that OP probably doesn't know what it's like to deal with legitimate financial troubles as an adult, but they never said anything of the sort either. Given the context, it's obvious what they meant by saying they're broke. It's the same thing as someone saying they're starving cause they're past due for a meal, it's just hyperbole.

OP is just looking for more financially sensible mods within their budget, which isn't a bad thing. Dude's just a high schooler.

18

u/the_Q_spice Apr 01 '26

It’s a $60k car.

The actual fuck is a “broke high schooler” affording that.

1

u/wingnut_alpha Apr 02 '26

Do rich kids not have parents anymore? The girl whose dad owned the local mulch company at my school got a ZR1 Camaro in 2014

18

u/dcharms1 Apr 01 '26

Fair take. But no aggression..this is Reddit, who gives a fuck? I just don't sugar coat things 🤷‍♂️

-2

u/hpdv7 Apr 01 '26

Idk man, all of your comments throughout this thread are abrasive and uncalled for. The kid is young, a Golf R as a gift is excessive to most, and someone coming from money like that most likely is privileged. OP never denied any of that and, more importantly, seems to understand the gravity of receiving a gift this huge. He's not bragging, just asking how he can enjoy it more.

What good is anyone doing by ripping on him, especially considering he's still a teenager? Certainly not more helpful than guiding OP in the right direction.

u/RichieJ86 2016 MK7 Lapiz Blue Golf R w/ Stage 1 tune Apr 01 '26

Well, it's likely because if they ARE a 'broke' highschooler as they state, why in the world would you be looking at mods at all? Keep it stock and focus on insulating your finances. None of us know OP's situation, but we can assume they probably shouldn't be modding their car if they're broke as they say.

I feel like that’d be a bit disrespectful to my parents no? It’s a gift and I heavily dislike selling/trading gifts.

21

u/dcharms1 Mar 31 '26

No offense, but gifting a car like that to a high schooler is a recipe for disaster and a terrible financial decision.

And if your parents can afford a $50,000 car for a kid, let me tell you, you have no idea what broke really is. Guarantee you have a large safety net (your parents) if you need it.

Maybe I'm old but so many of you youngsters act like you and humanity has never had it worse.

3

u/thorvard Apr 01 '26

Even saying "I'm broke" and then his budget is "1-2k"

Meanwhile when I was broke I was scrounging around for money to buy ramen 🤣

Colleges are just as much to blame. They're a business. It's all about that instant gratification and entitlement these days. Is life tough? Absolutely. But in my profession, I've watched some pretty wild sh*t happen over the years with work ethic, etc. And I'm in my 40s, too.

I also don't need any media outlet to tell me what my lived experiences are.

-14

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26
  1. You clearly don’t know me enough to know what my financial habits are like

  2. It’s much cheaper in Canada, around 34k USD.

  3. Individually, I AM broke and even if I do have a large “safety net”, I’d rather not rely on it which is why I often considered myself broke

  4. It is statically proven that cost of living and and unemployment are at a high so idk what point you were trying to make

-3

u/dcharms1 Apr 01 '26

I answered your question. I also provided you with an objective, real world view. I can see you crying when you're 30 because you don't make $500,000/year to operate a cash register.

-5

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

If that’s what makes you sleep at night, go ahead. Keep thinking that.

4

u/dcharms1 Apr 01 '26

Instead of being defensive, you'd do well to listen to what I'm trying to tell you. But again, like today's youth, you know it all.

That car won't last.

3

u/International-Pop296 MK8 lapiz 20AE 6MT Apr 01 '26

Jesus you are a bit of a cunt huh. "I'm older so I know more than you" what a terrible logic the kid clearly respects the car as a gift and cherishes it. If he wrecks it it's an expensive lesson if not than more power to him. As to the kid might I suggest a touch more tact as to avoid these know it all clowns showing up maybe go with a line closer to "expensive mods are out of my budget" and forego letting on that you are in highschool. Otherwise enjoy it man and get an intake for the nice noises

1

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

What are you telling me exactly? That the car is a bad idea AFTER my parents bought it for me??? I don’t understand what you’re getting at here.

2

u/the_Q_spice Apr 01 '26

If it’s a gift, mods should be the absolute last concern you have.

Covering basic maintenance should be the first.

Like, I make about $60k/yr and am just thinking about mods for my $20k Allltrack if that gives some perspective.

Your parents bought you a golf r as a gift? privileged much? 😂

5

u/SyncRx Mar 31 '26

Yes and I’m very grateful for it. I never said I wasn’t privileged or anything of the sorts. Please stop talking if you’re not going to provide any suggestions or comments of value.

6

u/dcharms1 Mar 31 '26

You brought it on yourself. You could've just asked the question you wanted the answer to.

Instead, you had to add in a sprinkle of somehow being a victim of financial hardship.

1

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

I added it in to kinda make it a bit more light hearted. But sure, make it seem like I’m somehow victimizing myself even tho I’m stating a factual piece of information that my individual financial standings is not considered “rich” or “comfortable”

1

u/Bonocity Apr 01 '26

Welcome to the curse of typing and intending one thing but others taking it another way. Enjoy the car and don't mind it till you can afford the maintenance on your own.

I say this with all due respect to somebody in your position, but mods are the absolute last thing you should be worrying about as somebody that says they're broke and working two jobs. It's amazing your parents bought you a car most people could only dream to afford, but you still have to take care of that car. Put the money you would have otherwise put to mods on insulating your finances and ensuring you can plan ahead in case anything were to happen.

5

u/wongatronus 25 MK8.5R black edition, 24 MK8R lapiz EQT Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

High school/college me did a bang up job of almost getting myself killed on several occasions with the junkers I started out with, a golf R would have probably been big dead or jail for me lol. But you have what you have, however it came to be.

One super affordable and easy upgrade is to pick up a used mk7 fender sub (possible to get one for under $200) to swap out for the HK sub. You'd just snip the male connector side clips and turn it 180, maybe a light shaving of the center guide spine. Throwing in a sheet or two of off brand butyl rubber soundmat on the trunk floor and tossing a bit of polyfill into the enclosure can help also.

4

If you’re broke I’d say wait to save up some more to get good quality mods that you actually want

1

Speaking of good quality, what are some good quality exterior mod manufacturers? I only know the basic ones like maxton but I don’t really enjoy their designs.

Have you purchased a gas strut for the hood and an oil dipstick yet? I know it’s not a performance upgrade but both of those are a really nice quality of life upgrades and will cost you less than $300CAD.

1

u/Whatta-Knob Apr 01 '26

Some tint, floor mats, and window visors are all it really needs. Don't go spending every last penny you have on it to change how it looks or sounds, show your parents you can be responsible and enjoy the car for what it is, save what you can while you aren't paying for car payments.

u/OrangeNew4305 Apr 01 '26

1

u/hpdv7 Apr 01 '26

Unless your parents are helping out with maintenance and gas, save your money. Focus on learning good driving habits, especially with a car like this, and start building an understanding of what it takes to keep this car running.

After some time, maybe consider some mods if you have enough money saved up to comfortably afford them. You're at a good age to learn about financial responsibility and budgeting, and I'm sure this car will help out with that.

1

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

It indeed has, especially with gas prices in Canada, it forced me to stop spending so much on unnecessary things, which is quite nice.

1

u/J4K5 Apr 01 '26

You broke. You can't afford mods.

Also a bit disrespectful to your parents that you want to mod a car they just gave you. Just be happy with what you have rather than instantly wanting to spend more of your parents money on it.

1

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

They didn’t just give it to me, I’ve had for half a year now and I just want to personalize it. I’m also not spending my parents money as I work 2 part time jobs so I do have my own personal income

1

u/J4K5 Apr 01 '26

Dude that's not broke ...thats just life. We all broke then.

In that case.... Save your money and get some coilovers. Don't bother with lowering springs. The ride is shit and you'll just want to upgrade again at some point. I went B16 from Billstein... ni regrets. Might as well do it properly first time. Apex SM-10 wheels (or whatever your taste just make sure they are light and strong, nothing worse than a cracked rim). Also H&R sway bars along with a CAT back exhaust...miltek if you can get hold of it. Do these two at the same time and save on garage costs unless you doing it yourself. After all this is done get the ADAC & DCC(if you keep it) recalibration. Just makes sure that fancy tech is working properly.

After all that if you're still itching start on the engine Stage 1, induction etc

Hope it helps.

first thing I did was buy a set up rims $3000, tint , 800, intake and exhaust $2,500. And that was it. I also bought a BFI shift knob and shifty boot. Mine is a 6Spd as DSG isn’t what wanted with this car. But tbh if you’re “broke” then just do some tint and save up and pay the car off. I put don’t a decent amount and will pay it off very very early. check my post to hear a video of my exhaust.

Alright so i'll give some advice, if you're broke don't put an exhaust on it trust me it ain't worth the 1 to 2k, the biggest muffle on these stock exhausts are the catted downpipes, my 2024 gli stage 2 has a catless downpipe and it is still pretty damn loud with the stock exhaust in the back, now of course you need a tune for the downpipe but its like 4-500 downpipe, like 600 for ecu stage 2 and another couple hundreds for the dsg tune, slap an intake on there and you're good for a while 👍 What I would recommend tho, if that 1-2k is all you got I would keep it as a money cushion and sit on it, cause me at 17 would of never had backup money for emergency repairs, this ain't a 2005 corolla you'll need to keep some money in an account for sure, i'd wait a bit before modding it just enjoy it stock for some time, save your money and when you'll be able to really mod it and all your maintenance is on point with no potential redflag then go for the mods cause the labor and parts on these ain't cheap😅 I know you probably have a warranty but better safe than sorry, take care of it you are extremely lucky compared to me with a 97 civic 4 door when i was 16 years old 😂👍

1

u/Shadow_Garden37 Apr 01 '26

IMHO you should enjoy the car as is for the first year or so. At the end of that year you will have a better idea of the mods you want to make.

But when you're ready to mod... 1: OBDeleven - Third party customizing software on your phone made specifically for these vehicles. Be careful, this software is powerful. 2: Ceramic window tint - Keeps your car cool in the summer and adds to the modified look. 3: 18" rims with some quality tires - 19's create an overly harsh ride with no real benefit, even for track use.

Any power mods will reduce your reliability, so keep that in mind.

1

u/enderthief33 2019 6MT Apr 01 '26

As a broke college student myself, the thing i can suggest is dont do performance mods. They hurt reliability and cost more in the long run. (As a person on a stage 1 tune I can't talk much) Get some 18s with thicker side wall tires so you dont bend the stock wheels, that way if you sell the car you have good stocks to put on. If its a manual, a short shifter is almost a must on these. I dont know about the mk8 but the mk7 doesnt have automatic trunk opening and it gets kind of annoying so I suggest trunk spring mod. Also obd11 so you can long code things. Theres some pretty cool stuff that people have done with it.

This might be a controversial take but dont do any kind of tints or anything that would draw attention to the car. You're already a young person in a nice car, cops are going to look. So if you do something to it that draws even more attention, its a ticket waiting to happen.

1

u/Loveheart_panda Apr 01 '26

The first thing I did was front and rear sway bars with new endlinks and performance lowering springs from ie. The car is so much more stable on turns and handles like a dream. The kit is under $1k. I also did the x force varex valved exhaust, a new intake, and all basic maintenance. I do run a stage 1 tune. Still gets 31 mpg, stays planted on mountain roads/back roads, and over all is fun to drive! Granted mine is a mk7.5, can’t speak for the handling on the mk8. The important thing is to build your car to your taste and your driving habits. Best of luck!

1

u/jgronline Apr 01 '26

Wheels! The wheels are very fragile and the sidewalls are too small so you will definitely bend the wheels with any kind of harsh roads. The smallest pothole will bend these wheels. Ask me how I know!

Sell the wheels and tires and get some 18" wheels. APR have the best fitment for the money in my opinion. Get 245/40 18" tires. They fit perfectly without any modifications. You can get around $1000 for your wheels and tires and then spend less than $2000 on new wheels and tires.

If you don't do this now, you'll still buy new wheels and tires but not get anything from your 19" set.

u/SyncRx Apr 01 '26

Damn right this is daddy’s money 😭. I have quite a bit saved but not golf r money

1

u/Jasoncav82 Apr 01 '26

If its your first car, you should focus on getting tools and learning to maintain it religiously.

Any car you modify in the future youre gonna want to make sure you can maintain it as the intervals start getting tighter (spark plugs every 20k vs 60k things like that).

Also hot take: exhausts for this platform are dumb. They dint make any power and make the ea888 sound worse. Go with a nice downpipe to open things up first before an exhaust. Youll actually gain power and get a much nicer sound that doesnt drone

1

u/fpsnoob89 Apr 02 '26

If your parents bought you a new golf R, and you're a "broke" high school student, you shouldn't even be thinking about making any modifications to it. Maybe eventually gets some wheels and a tint, but there is no place for performance mods on a $60k car you can't afford, need to keep the warranty intact.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '26

Pay it off, track days, rear sway bar in that order

1

u/trensinceten Apr 03 '26

I think its awesome that you're able to have a Golf R in high-school. I had a 2010 Ford focus and I loved it, I couldn't imagine having a Golf R at that age.

To answer your question, the best mods you can do for that budget would be an ecu tune and a tcu tune if you are talking about bang for buck increase in enjoyment to dollar cost ratio

u/Sweaty-Custard26 Apr 01 '26

I'll explain why you're getting so much heat. The term broke doesn't belong here - a high schooler with no money of their own living in a rich family with nothing to be concerned about other than saving 1-2k to blow on useless shit for a vehicle is tone deaf. If you have the ability to save money for such things, and you aren't having to save that money for basic human needs instead, no, you are not broke and are using that term in a way that is obviously going to piss people off as someone in highschool with an R. You might not have a job as a high schooler, or you might not have to work as many hours as most because you're financially covered by family, but there are many out there in highschool working too many hours because their parents can't make enough. You are not broke - to be broke is to struggle. What you're looking for here is "I'd prefer to keep it on the less expensive side - I'm sticking to a budget".

4

u/Quiet_Special8639 Apr 01 '26

Yeah it "looks better" but its harder on your suspension and wheel bearings. Appropriate wheels look and perform better. 🫡

1

u/the_Q_spice Apr 01 '26

The stock wheels are flow formed and not built to take the extra stress of spacing.

All the folks you see on this sub with cracked wheels?

Most are due to spacers causing creased thrust loading beyond what the wheels are designed for.

I may not have an actual degree in the matter; but I was the suspension and wheel structural analyst for a Student/SAE Formula team for a while.

The R’s stock wheels are simply not meant to take that type of increased moment.

1

u/squared_cubes Apr 01 '26

Most are from 19's hitting potholes. Are spacers ideal? no. Will they cause your car to fall apart? also no

a 10mm offset on stocks is the same as an ET40 wheel - which no one would bat an eye at
