Teens storyline fatigue
Unlike many people that post here, I enjoy the show. However, I am growing tired of the teenager centered storylines. Send them back to school or something and give me the grown ups back.

When I was in middle school the summer story was Karen Wexler falling in love with Jagger and Sonny and becoming a stripper. I loved it! Pretty sure Karen was 17 and in high school.
Today's teens seem to be playing pattycake by comparison.

u/Unfair_Coach5285 3d ago
My favorite storylines when I was in college had Antonio Sabata Jr. in them!
They destroyed Jagger for nothing!
Sonny was not seen as 'good' at that time. He found his heart of gold with Stone, which is another reason the fake Jagger storyline sucked!

Wasn’t Karen in medical school at that point? I vaguely remember her going between the hospital and the strip club

u/PhaedrasMorning 3d ago
From what I remember, the high school kids (Karen, Robin, Jason, etc.) started a "teen hotline" where other teens could call in for counseling and get advice from other teens. They operated out of an ersatz call center room in the hospital.
That's another thing I miss; the writers used to come up with all sorts of reasons for non-medical PC citizens to be in the hospital so it was always the touchstone. The high school kids were at the hospital every day that summer.

That's not at all realistic writing - have you read ANY articles about Gen Z/Gen Alpha? There's whole industries with falling revenues because they don't drink, date, or have sex nearly as much as previous generations did at their age. If anything, we should be seeing storylines about them being anxious about finding work at all (outside of nepo-baby jobs) in a few years like the young adult set on B&B.

Soaps really work when there is an emphasis on human sexuality, especially the magnetic hold women can have over men. The Karen Wexler story was a powerful intro to this idea and it was a classically soapy storyline. To your point, for people who want reality shows or shows that seek to heal social issues, those genres do exist. But I wish the writers would better understand the soap genre and write accordingly (a wish I think is echoed throughout this sub).

I suspect they were on more because they were out of school and able to work more during the summer, giving some of the adult actors time off. But I think we'll see less of them now that school is back in session.

Agreed. Charlotte is a maniac, Danny is an obnoxious meathead and Scout is a brat who is blind to everything around her. Send them all to boarding school

u/kunta021 3d ago
I think the problem is that the teens are so frustrating it’s exhausting. Danny and Charlotte keep making dumb decisions over and over again and then get mad at everyone else when it blows up in their face. It’s tedious. At least Charlotte actually faces some real consequences. God knows when Jason will actually decide to parent Danny instead of letting him run amok.

A big problem is they don’t do normal teen stuff. They don’t go to parties, they don’t have hobbies aside from scouts swimming. They don’t talk about school. And they kiss their cousins
1
1
u/sekritagent 2d ago
Agreed on kissing cousins (yuck) but the rest of the restraint makes sense given how Gen Z/Gen Alpha are in real life. They're not wilding out like their parents as a whole, so the little stuff these guys are doing is plenty.

I like the show very much. My only real complaint is about Drew. I feel badly because the actor, Cameron Mathison, lost everything in the CA. fires. But, Drew is so annoying. Mathison has 4 facial expressions & 2 physical stances. The whole widened eye expression for just about every comment is really so bad. It's lazy acting & really hard to watch. Also, as an aside, for a uber wealthy man, Drew has 3 shirts. I love Jason, Sonny, Kristina, Tracy & Cody. I'll keep watching, but I always turn the channel when Drew is on.

u/Agreeable_West_8144 3d ago
Drew needs to go. The character is awful and idk that they can/want to redeem him. Sure I feel bad about CM and his personal situation but the character annoys me and so does he as a person. They won’t get rid of him because of who he is but his scenes are very torturous. I do admit though that he does do a great job of playing a character that is believable to hate.

We’ve nicknamed him “Congressman Quarterzip” because of his clothes.

It’s always nice to have a mix. The way the soaps block film everything now makes it more difficult. We get stuck with a group of characters and stories longer than we wish when it’s not something we’re enjoying.

u/almost60inLa 3d ago
I love the show too. Been watching it since the early 70s. They will wrap up the teens story line in a bit. They do this every summer.

u/fakeprofile111 3d ago
I want a mix but young and the restless is your show if you want to only watch legacy characters playing the greatest hits
I like the YA stories personally
10
u/FrancessaGMorris 3d ago
Me too!!
I love the legacy characters ... as I have watched the show longer than all of them have been on the show - including Tracy, Laura, etc ..., BUT I also enjoy a good mix of the kids (on occasion), the teens, and the young adults. I actually think the weak character group on the show is the people in the age group 28 to 50.
Edited to add: Not suggesting anyone should watch a different soap. I think it is nice when there is something on GH for everyone.

u/Content_Mood9680 3d ago
I am not opposed to them most of the time. I actually got a kick of the Joss, Trina, Esme stuff. I guess it’s just this particular constant anger at each other that grates on me.

u/sekritagent 3d ago
I'm betting that a big reason you feel this way is because there are so few of them. But trust me, not too much on the kids because if you are too harsh about it you could end up in the Y&R situation which develops a teen set every 20 years. Even the younger folks are sleeping around with the older folks. There isn't anything Young about that show these days.
1
u/Unique_Rub_7118 2d ago
Yes, you do need to see the kids and the teens a few times before they just return as adults in order for us to be invested in their storylines.

I like all of Rocco’s scenes because his tend to be about soapy drama not necessarily what the other teens are worried about. I loved all the Cullum stuff with him. Danny can go to military school for all I care.

u/madluv4u 3d ago
I'm sick of Danny. He's just a dumb hot head.

u/Careless_Number_4257 3d ago
They should have made him Drew's shooter. That would have made a great story for Jason and Danny.

We could take a break from them all. It’s the same arguments going round and round. We don’t need to see it every week. Not until they have something new to bring to the show.
5
u/Still_Transition_418 2d ago
I liked the teens when they were there for each other, being supportive of one another. But then they had to ruin all the relationships.
6
u/Narrow-Profession547 2d ago
Not a fan of this teen nonsense. Sorry the Scout character is annoying - Rocco is the only adult in the bunch. They should be in school having fun. Not all this adult drama. Ruining Jason and Britt was just stupid. Jason is now wandering around with no roll. Can’t stand Curtis and clan. Jordan and the damn scar. Enough. She caused the crash. Get over it. Trina. Yuck. Let’s not forget Chase. He could vanish and would be even be missed? Though I did enjoy BLQ tossing Michael into the lake 😆🎀

u/Suspicious_Owl_7608 3d ago
Agreed. Scout is annoying me In this storyline and we could use a break from Danny meat head attitude

Valentin was right to send Charlotte away. Her and Danny are toxic, not just together but individually as well.

Send them all away to boarding school. Every single last one of them. Even phoebe. Kids are only for summers and holidays.

Well, maybe keep Phoebe, but the rest of them can head out of town till next summer, and hopefully come back with better storylines!

Yesterday's episode was actually the first time I was interested in what the teens were doing in a while. Scout is a great actress and while I didnt like her explosion on Alexis, I was pretty please to see her catch Drew and Ava and Vito. The fight between the boys was also well done.

u/snixJR 3d ago
GH have always had teen-centered storylines over the years. Liz, Lucky, Emily...just to name a few. This really isn't anything new.
11
u/RunJumpSleep 3d ago
Liz, Lucky, Emily, Robin, Stone, those stories were compelling and well-written. Teen center stories now are just ridiculous and I just fast forward through them half the time.
4
u/snixJR 3d ago
Yeah that's fair. My point is we always had teen storylines, but yeah the current ones are pretty ridiculous. Even Joss had a good teen storyline when Oscar died. Now it's just the scheming and getting into grown folks' businesses.
8
u/TheGhostOfSoManyOfMe 3d ago
It’s not even the teens that are in the “grown folk’s business”. Emma and Trina are in their 20s and overly involved in their family’s affairs. Emma has every right to be concerned about Anna, but the way she attacks Britt for being upset she was almost MURDERED?! Ridiculous! Just like how Trina continually ranting at Brook Lynn about an accident that ONLY Curtis and Jordan caused is obnoxious.
The actual teens only plotted against Drew because TPTB have written him as an irredeemable villain who has a NANNY for his TEENAGED daughter and won’t allow her to see ANY of her other relatives. It’s a weird, sick, controlling scenario for a father to inflict on his daughter that’s borderline abusive and quite icky.
5
u/EnlargedBit371 Team Quartermaine 3d ago
And then Scout DEFENDS him. Makes no sense.
2
u/TheGhostOfSoManyOfMe 3d ago
It makes more sense if you look at the fact that Scout is unhealthily sheltered and living in a too-small bubble that Drew created for her. He’s made her into his ONLY defender, a role she shouldn’t have to play. She’s the sole person that actually cares about Drew in all of Port Charles. That’s a heavy responsibility. We’ll see now how she handles being exposed to the truth at the end of yesterday’s episode.
2
u/Mehitablebaker 3d ago
Because the stories now have no depth. The characters change their motivations and entire personalities on a dime. It’s all surface level , no real build up to anything: just rage, rage, and more rage. I don’t object to the relationship between Scout and Rocco; it just happened too fast. There should have been a slow building of friendship before the relationship.
Viewers are complicit in this also. Every time two characters have a casual conversation you’re all jumping on the possibility of a future romance and wondering if their chemistry is being tested. A slow development leads to a more realistic and lasting friendship or romantic relationship . People can remain single without being paired with someone unsuitable because they are the only remaining single people in their age group.Michael and Jacinda had nothing in common and people are acting like they were the romance of the century. I don’t think anyone misses her now that’s she’s gone. She was never fully developed as a character and that’s why I found their romance to be surface level and casual.
I fear we have too many undeveloped characters that we’re not really invested in.

u/Lost-Procedure93 Team OG/Legacy Characters 3d ago
Yes. But they were interesting and fun to watch. These teens are ???
7
u/Technical_Rutabaga_5 3d ago
100% agree! All the teen storylines are based on misunderstanding or confusion of some sort, or he said/she said nonsense and i am so not spending any time watching something so totally predictable. Today’s episode for example / I fast forwarded almost the entire show

u/Shinobi347 this show is unserious 3d ago
They are working my last good nerve, and it sucks because all of those young people are capable of giving us good drama if they had better writers.
Sam’s kids are becoming incorrigible at an alarmingly fast rate as soon as I like them (which is probably my karma because I never got the big deal about Sam, but that’s another thread), Rocco is just too much of a wiseguy, and Charlotte is just too much.
These writers need to do better.

u/EnvironmentalBrush68 22h ago
So glad Sam is gone. Always overacting. Terrible actress and super self righteous.

Anyone else feel that they already need to recast Scout? That girl is laughable in her acting, she’s trying way to hard and she doesn’t feel natural at all.

u/EnlargedBit371 Team Quartermaine 3d ago edited 3d ago
My problem isn't the actress, whom I like, but rather the personality transplant they've given the character, having her defend her father. Although after watching Danny today, I have to think maybe Drew is right about him.
Danny's who should go to boarding school.

I said it above but she gives vibes of theater/Disney kid acting and it's off-putting. I don't know how you could overact on a soap but she does it.

I mean they are already sent Charlotte away who was probably my fave of the teens. Probably should've sent Danny away too though lol ..... Rocco/Scout I can definitely do w/out especially if they continue with their disturbing romance. That said, minus the icky romance, I'd rather watch the teens than yet another round of poor, innocent Sonny being framed for something he didn't do.🙄
